Alec Baldwin: WikiLeaks Assange Should be Tried Only if Cheney is for Plame Leak

By Noel Sheppard | December 04, 2010 | 16:36

Noel Sheppard's picture

I really love when I see a blog published at the Huffington Post by Alec Baldwin for I know it's going to be some truly delicious left-wing insanity guaranteed to put a huge smile on my face.

On Saturday, the idiot actor from Long Island, New York, didn't disappoint:

I hope they catch that WikiLeaks guy. I hope they catch him and prosecute him for all its worth. I hope they, legally speaking, throttle this guy within an inch of his life. [...]

Only one condition. You hold formal hearings on the Valerie Plame scandal. And you put that Low-Down-Gutless-Excuse-For-A-Vice-President Dick Cheney and that crypto-facist maniac Richard Armitage on trial. Same as Julian Assange.

Cheney and Armitage. Assange goes on trial, they go on trial.

It's astonishing that anyone with even a room temperature intelligence quotient can make a comparison between all the top secret information released by Julian Assange and the Valerie Plame affair.

Or is this an indication there's a severe winter storm hitting Hollywood and the thermostat in the Baldwin residence is broken?

Correct

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 12/04/2010 - 10:37pm.

The Special Prosecutor had the sworn admission by Armitage, and the confirmation by Novak that Armitage was the one who confirmed Plame's CIA employment.

The only thing that remained was proving that a crime had actually been committed.

If Fitzgerald couldn't charge let alone convict Armitage, then there was no evidence that a crime had been committed.

HuffPo, Newsbubba? Don't think so.

Submitted by Jer on Sat, 12/04/2010 - 11:16pm.

Maybe you should check which website you signed on to, Newsbubba, because it obviously wasn't The Huffington Post.  The Baldwin piece already has over 500 comments posted--nowhere near the several thousand the site routinely receives for published articles, but still far more than the "so few" you joke about and more than enough to keep you from getting "lonesome".

While clearly a lib/progressive site, HuffPo permits vigorous dissent, and there are numerous contrarian views--many from conservative regulars who have been posting for years--appearing on virtually every comment thread.  Guest Republican/conservative pundits and politicians also submit articles from time to time, and pro and con positions are occasionally presented by opposing essayists regarding topical issues of interest.

Comments are completely moderated, so there is no flaming.  Frankly, it's everything a political website should be--except for its liberal orientation ;-) --which probably accounts for the fact it's the #1 site on the internet in that category.

Submitted by Jer on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 12:38am.

Admittedly, I defend Morning Joe and HuffPo quite a bit, Matthew, because I believe both are subjected to excessive and often unfair criticism here.  Slamming MSNBC's leftward tilt in general and its weeknight programming in particular is OK with me, as is most of the negative assessment of lib/progressive sites such as dKos and DU.  But HuffPo gets a bad rap from many commenters whose opinions appear to be based more on hearsay and group think than actual evidence.

The last time I attempted to post one was on the occasion of Tony Snow's death and there were many tasteless remarks made of which I disapproved.  The comment section was closed before my objection was posted and it was not long after that all comments were subjected to comprehensive monitoring and moderation.  The site has been cleaned up, redesigned, topics expanded, dissenting views more plentiful, and the overall product much improved.

Huffington Post

Submitted by goodspkr on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 2:04pm.

I go to the Huffington post and use it on occasion.  It's a pretty good site, but I would hardly classify it with "Comments are completely moderated, so there is no flaming.  Frankly, it's everything a political website should be--except for its liberal orientation ;-)"

From what I've seen there is plenty of flaming, name calling etc.  But it does go beyond politics which I think is what makes it work.

But like right leaning sites, what makes it biased is the stories it choses to run and not run.  Between Fox Nation and Huffington Post you should have a good idea of what's happening and what both sides of the aisle are thinking.

I like Newbusters for the video they supply with all their stories.  And the fact that you are here indicates that NB allows vigorous debate as well.

goodspkr...

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 12/06/2010 - 2:29am.

I agree with most of your assessment of HuffPo with the exception of our obvious difference of opinion with respect to flaming and name-calling.  I've already challenged a couple of members here to provide an example of the verbal abuse which they had contended was rampant at HuffPo and thus far they have submitted exactly zilch.  You are certainly encouraged to present evidence proving their silence was not an admission of error.

And just to be clear, I am by no means claiming there is absolutely no snarkiness, sarcasm, needling, moderate derision and ridicule, sniping, etc. [I've noticed an occasional " you moron" emanating from both liberal and conservative posters], but that excessive, over-the-top personal abuse directed toward other commenters, and vile, tasteless remarks about public figures in general appear to be no longer tolerated and either never make it past the initial monitoring stage or are quickly removed if they do.

Anyway, that's my sense of the current posting climate at HuffPo.  However, I only spend a tiny fraction of my time there (since I am for the most part hanging out here)--and only read a tiny fraction of the comments--so I am prepared to eat my words if you or someone else can show me that my take is clearly off the mark.

Finally, I wholeheartedly concur with your closing observation and am very grateful to NewsBusters for the opportunity to engage in that "vigorous debate".  [I do wish there were clearer posting guidelines.  I have no better understanding now regarding what is and is not permitted than I did three and a half years ago.]

The facts don't matter, Dave

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 12/05/2010 - 12:51pm.

Whenever the Left and the MSM invoke the name of Valerie Plame, they never mention that Armitage was the admitted culprit, and apparently the film glosses over this, too.   They prefer to keep the conspiracy ghost alive to convince the sheep that Cheney and Rove escaped prosecution, thus preserving their arch enemies as a force lurking in the shadows waiting to seize power.

People create myths for a variety of reasons -- to anchor values, offer hope, offer warning, etc.  When facts appear to undermine the myth, they are ignored or attacked.

Baldwin is a rather intelligent individual.  He's a longtime Democratic operative and contributor who I'm sure still has political aspirations.  Not unlike the industry he works in, Baldwin perpetuates myths and intentionally ignores facts because useful to him.  On the other hand, I believe that most of his leftwing Hollywood colleagues regurgitate talking points and are unaware of facts.

Now, however, it appears the federal government has moved beyond staunching the flow of leaked information, to suppressing even the very mention of WikiLeaks online by prospective employees.

It's the federal government that is doing the suppressing. Not one word about the Obama Administration doing the suppressing! Can you imagine if the Bush Administration had been in power? George W. Sorry Alex but your liberal friend in the State Department, Richard Armitage was the LEAKER!

Maybe you should read a paper or two to learn the real facts before you make unsubstantiated claims.

There is no evidence that Cheney leaked anything to the media about Plame, and Novak, the reporter and Fitzgerald the liberal republican prosecutor never made such claims.

Last, there is no evidence that the revelation of Plame's actions and those of her vile husband Wilson, by Armitage and Novak, ever harmed our national security. But the evidence is clear that Assange's assaults on the USA are harming it greatly.
