NPR: Obama's Fat Lip Could Improve Image With Jong Il, Ahmadinejad and Putin

By Noel Sheppard | November 27, 2010 | 18:14

Noel Sheppard's picture

It appears that at NPR, even a fat lip for the President is to be heralded as a crowning achievement furthering his prestige and street cred when dealing with despots like Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

According to Scott Simon, a president with a "gnarly, vivid scar" might even be able to intimidate China's rulers into halting their currency manipulation (audio follows with partial transcript and commentary):

SCOTT SIMON, NPR: Just three weeks after getting a shellacking in the midterm elections, yesterday President Obama got a fat lip. The president played basketball yesterday with some friends in the gym of the Fort McNair Army Base, and reportedly took an elbow in the mouth from an opposing player who went up for a shot.

It took twelve stitches to close The First Fat Lip, if you please. I'm not sure that Joe Frazier needed twelve stitches after the Thrilla in Manila, though the White House stressed that a smaller filament was used, which increases the number of stitches, but leaves a smaller scar. I wonder if having a larger scar wouldn't actually fortify President Obama's profile, as he contends with Kim Jong Il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Vladimir Putin. Imagine a president with a gnarly, vivid scar telling the rulers of China, "Nice country ya' got here. I'd hate to see something happen to it if you didn't stop foolin' around with the value of your currency. Know what I mean?"

As recent presidential injuries go, President Obama's is almost valiant. His immediate predecessor, President George W. Bush, famously choked on a pretzel. President Bill Clinton tore a tendon stumbling on the steps of Greg Norman's house after a round of golf. But an elbow in the chops is a battle ribbon in basketball.

This was obviously a tongue-in-cheek commentary, but one gets the feeling Simon quite believes it.

I'm surprised he didn't compare The First Fat Lip to Ronald Reagan being shot in 1981.

Maybe that's next.

(H/T Weasel Zippers)

*****Update: I received the following from Simon via e-mail Sunday morning (with permission):

Dear Mr. Sheppard

You were right--it was a tongue-in-cheek commentary. I thought that was pretty obvious. As to your feeling that I really meant it, too, I'd say that's only in your mind, and certainly nothing that I said. I can only be responsible for what I say, not your feelings.

I'd hate to think that I can't do a funny essay every now and then because people "feel" things about it that aren't there.

with [sic] best wishes of the season

Scott Simon

I responded:

Mr. Simon,

Thank you for your response. As you observed, I made my readers aware that I believed your piece was "obviously a tongue-in-cheek commentary."

However, given the media's unprecedented sycophancy and unprofessionalism with regard to their treatment of Barack Obama from the moment he threw his hat into the presidential candidacy ring in February 2007, as well as NPR's well-known liberal leanings, you surely can't be surprised folks on the right would either miss altogether or cast aside your comedic intent. In fact, I mentioned what appeared obvious to plant that seed for those so fed up with Obama-worship that they likely wouldn't have considered it.

As for my feelings, given the shoddy behavior of journalists the past four years specifically with respect to Obama, is it really farfetched for me or anyone else to glean sincerity in your sarcasm? That would seem to be an occupational hazard after the way this man has be fawned over thereby making it difficult to do a "funny essay" without a goodly number of people missing the joke.

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" comes to mind.

Best wishes back,

ns

To put it another way...

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sat, 11/27/2010 - 6:19pm.

NPR and the rest of the limp-wristed liberals are looking for something -- anything -- that would bolster obama's currently pathetic image as a "get-tough, be-tough" type of regular Joe. Just as long as there is no violence involved, or any moral stand taken, of course.

I was riding along in my automobile (remember Chuck Berry) when the news of the brave Obama taking a shot to the mouth and having to have stitches came over Fox.  I said out loud to the traffic around me, "I hope they sewed the mother frocker's lips together! Maybe THAT will shut his a$$ up!"

At least if he has a fat lip, it will match Michelle's fat a$$!

I'm glad YOU correlated Boy Blunder's fat lip with Moooooochelle's fat okole - I'm getting a little paranoid around here lately!!!!

Ah........Chuck Berry, James Burton, Scottie Moore, Link Wray, Buddy Holly.......as well as Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf.........and all of the early rock'n'roll and r'n'b guys MADE me learn guitar!!! I remember  - in my little pre-pubiscent addled mind - thinking 'WHAT IS THAT SOUND?????'

Really, bubba??? I though

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 3:10pm.

Really, bubba??? I though Jimmy Reed was well known!! After all, he DID play Carnegie Hall once - drunk!!! hahahahahaha!!!! His wife used to sit behind him to cue him on the words - his own words!!!!

Jimmy Reed's guitar 'iicks' are just as identifiable as Chuck Berry's - in their originality and the way that they are played. He also played a pretty mean harp, and had great delivery of his vocals........and his songs always seemed to have some sort of 'comfortable' roll to them - not too slow, like some blues, and not to abrasive or aggresive. I love Jimmy Reed!!!!!

Oh...........yeah.........I don't drink white wine.............and the only place I'm paranoid is if I say something 'wrong' here on NB!!!! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Jimmy's "teleprompter."

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 5:40pm.

The way I heard it was that Jimmy was illiterate so he couldn't write down his words or read them.  He was also a little (lot?) loaded so his wife would sit right beside him singing softly into his ear so he could remember the words.  You can hear her in the background on many of his tunes.

"Comfortable roll" is an understatement, Killa!  I think that's what I loved most about his music.  My favorite was "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (yeah, yeah, yeah). Serious roadhouse music. I went into some very shady places when I was a kid to listen and watch. Anything else I might have tried could have gotten me killed or at least seriously messed up.

I never met a girl who loved his music until you actually got them to listen to it, and then they were hooked, but still wouldn't admit it. "Nice girls" didn't listen to "that type of music" when I was younger. RIGHT!! They were just coy enough to not admit it.

This could go on forever, Big Boss Man, so I'll just sign off. Roll on, Killa. I won't even start on how his harmonica could send a "thrill up my leg."

Good post,

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 12:23am.

Good post, bubba............even if only 7 people here have the slightest idea of what we're talking about!!! Yeah..........I think he couldn's write or read too much - I could go look on some of my album notes, and, yeah, you CAN hear his wife in the background on some tracks!!!

I love the 'slurring' effect of his phrasology.......might have had something to do with his condition - hahahahahaha!!!! But, hey......it's 'da blues', doncha know???  Like I said - my response, as a hormone-ridden, pre-pubescent, horny gradeschooler was- 'WHAT'S THAT SOUND???' And I bugged my father so badly that he HAD to buy me an electric guitar when I was a freshman - I washed his car and mowed the lawn and did whatever I could to pay him back!!! And I put a damn hole in the speaker so that it would sound gritty and thick and heavy - kind of like Link Wray in 'Rumble'..............my friends wanted to know why the hell I did it!!!!

Yeah, bubba, I'm sure you played ol' Jimmy's music for those girls - at the right time - like out in the car under the stars, or in the basement when you were alone!!! Don't lie to me!!! And I know WHY you played it to them, too!!! Hahahahahaha!!! The blues goes straight to the .........well, I think you know what I'm talking about!!!! You sure as hell couldn't get a girl excited by playing Frankie Avalon!!!

That's one reason I'm glad the 'English Invasion' happened - because they WEREN'T ashamed of the American 'roots'!!! I'd say, with some exceptions, that after Elvis got drafted, and Little Richard went 'religious', and Chuck Berry got rung up on the Mann Act (hey, Chucks ALWAYS been a piece of work, but you can't deny his influence on rock and roll!!!), Eddie Cochran got killed, the plane crash killed Buddy (and spared Waylon Jennings!!!), Richie, and the Bopper (is there a more LASCIVIOUS song than 'Chantilly Lace'???), and the black and white doo-wop groups were sort of out of favor, and the blues was still relegated to 'race music' stations.................then we were stuck with a few years of some pretty crappy music, disguised as pop, or rock and roll!!!

And when the English laid it back in our faces - a lot of the kids thought it was something new.............but it was good ol' American rock'n'roll, done up English style!!! Of course, they had some pretty good players and writers - hahahahaha!!!

I'm kind of partial to 'Bright Lights, Big City'......................and also 'Ya Better Take Out Some Inshoyance'................but they're all classic Jimmy Reed!!!!  He also played some godawful off-beat brand of guitar - a Kay or something - that sounded INCREDIBLE!!! In fact, if you really want to see an off-beat guitar, you should try and find an early photo of Hubert Sumlin, who was Wolf's guitar player for years - that thing is another story!!!

Ahhhhhhhhh............we could go on and on. I also forgot to mention Sam Lightnin' Hopkins, who I also loved from the first time I heard him. What a COOOOOOOOOL guy!!!!!

I agree. Now, if obama had turned around, unholstered his Smith & Weston and pistol-whipped the SOB to within an inch of his life Chicago-style -- yeah, that would be intimidation. Or, instead of grabbing his mouth and stopping the game, if he had simply continued to play and bled all down his shirt as if nothing happened -- that would also be intimidation.

But calling in the WH medical staff, then getting this overblown sympathy card from NPR? Give me a break.

Renunciation of citizenship

Renunciation of citizenship is detailed under titel 18 of the US Code.  You have to do more than just travel to a forbidden country to renounce your citizenship.  Fortunately for us, Obama DID do more.   He is reported to have used an Indonesian Passport to gain entry to Pakistan.

Read the laws.  Indonesian law requires does not recognize dual citizenship.  Anyone who holds a valid Indonesian passport has sworn allegiance to Indonesia and Indonesia alone, as per Indonesian law.   US Code states that anyone who accepts foreign citizenship which demands an allegiance be sworn to that foreign power has in swearing that allegiance renounced any claim to US citizenship.  The same for those who enlist in the armed forces of a foreign power, which covers all those Americans who have joined Al Qaeda.

The mere possession by Obama of a valid Indonesian Passport as an adult calls into question his US citizenship, if indeed he was ever a US citizen.

Don't think he was ever....

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 11:26am.

I had forgotten that bit about the Indonesian passport, which solidifies the idea that he wasn't/isn't a US citizen.  Based on everything I've read and researched(including reading the code you mentioned), it really looks like he was never a US citizen, not even naturalized(which would also disqualify someone from being potus).  For all intents and purposes, we have an illegal alien in the white house.

While it's hard to prove any of that, it's getting harder and harder to disprove it(a la efforts on the left) because more information keeps being discovered to support the idea.  Not only that, some people who have once not touched the subject about his citizenship are now doing so, such as Rush who called him an imposter.  Which means more and more people are starting to ask questions.

Wasn't there a statement that he made to Alan Keyes a long time ago saying he wasn't qualified to run one time?

At any rate, should it be publicly acknowledged that he is indeed a non-US Citizen, it would be the biggest screwup in the history of the country that he got that far.  I can only imagine the reaction.

I don't think it could be called a 'screw-up' if it was done intentionally...................the guys on the 'inside' know what is going on.............hence the smokescreen and black-out. (Oh, sh*t, was THAT a racist statment??? If it was.................GOOD!!!). Remember, Boy Blunder's 'typical white person' grandmother was basically put under lock and key over here in Hawaii once he became the nominee............and they kept her like that until she died.

According to the media

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sat, 11/27/2010 - 11:32pm.

I thought, from listening to the media, pre-election, pre-inauguration, all Obama needed (or any liberal president needed, for that matter) to solve any foreign policy problem was his intelligence, charm, sophistication, worldliness, persuasiveness, and diplomacy (at all costs). Since obviously none of that has worked, finally they discover he needs intimidation - and they seek to find it in a freakin' scar? Like he got it from dueling or something? These people are truly developmentally arrested.

I mean seriously,  find the footage of BO tossing the ball out for the Washington ball game.  Need I say more?

I can think of absolutely nothing good to say---

Submitted by matthewdean on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 2:07am.

about either of the Obamas.

Not only do I believe them both to be stone cold racists, I see both as exceedingly ungrateful for the opportunities they have been offered in this country; opportunities that exist no where else in the world.

Yes, there is still racism in the United States.  As there is world-wide.

While racism is an evil, insidious thing to witness; racism, in this country today, is currently aimed primarily at those with pale skin.

Affirmative Action,  Political Correctness, the existence of the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP,and the plethora of race based organizations for Black citizens, underline that fact every single day, and woe to any caucasian individual desirous of forming any entity that has the word "white" in it.

Fairness and/or equity aside, it is not only foolish, but dangerous, given the state of the world today, to divide our citizens along racial lines, and yet we have a Department in the Federal government doing just that; the DOJ.  Specific statements were issued saying crimes committed by black perpetrators reference voting location sites were not to be followed up on.

The right to vote.  The very bedrock underpinnings of this country.

This is insanity, and the culpability rests at Obama's doorstep.

This is neither a figment of my imagination, nor a conundrum.

Why would I stand and applaud someone who disrespects me, my family members, and my country, that much?

Granted, Obama is a politician.

The problem is, he represents nothing in the way of interest, either in, or for, this country.  He lies.  All politicians lie.  He is looking out for himself.  All politicians are looking out for themselves.

NO politician, however, especially a prior president, ever painted shame on the United Sates of America through word and deed as this worthless pos has.  NEVER.

I do not know which is more shameful; that Barack Hussein Obama has acted this way, or that there are people in this country today who not only are not bothered by his villainy, but seem to approve of it.

There are no words to describe the full range of my dislike, disgust, disdain, and disrespect for this poseur.

As for those who call him names, or call him out; I understand the anger.

I can at least remember

I can at least remember recent history.  You said it will never happen.  i just showed you how dead wrong you are.

How do you know what skeletons are in the Obama closet?  Nobody does.  Or at least nobody who is willing to speak does.  This guy has no past.  Think about that.  He explodes on the national political scene as a keynote speaker in the 2004 Democratic Convention from the post of Illinois State Senator.  He is elected to the US Senate in 2006 as the product of a smear campaign aimed at Jack Ryan.  I have heard he used the same tactics to secure his state Senate seat as well.  Prior to that the man was a community organizer and a second rate lecturer in a law school.  Beyond these public facts, this man's murky past is carefully sealed up, cloaked in shadow.

who agree with you.

There are some, as well, who believe that the capitol is already being punished because Obama is there.   :oD

That there might be those here who believe capital punishment should be in Obama's future is, I think, a bit of a stretch, as I have only seen one post that mentioned it.

It would be exponentially insane to wish a death sentence on anyone because of political disagreement, and while I believe it would be unwise to do so, I also know that it is a crime, as it should be, to make threats to that effect.

While ugly comments and violent rhetoric are not crimes, Chris, I do respect any and all who call for moderation, whether in verbiage, discourse, or actions.

Blessed are the peace keepers.

I mean no disrespect, and intend no offense, but:

Blessed, too, are those who will speak their minds in this stupid society infected with the paralyzing venom of political correctness.
