Mark Shields: I've Never Heard a Democratic Leader Accuse Bush of Lying Us Into War

Syndicated columnist and PBS regular Mark Shields on Friday actually said on national television that he has never heard a Democratic leader or presidential candidate accuse former President George W. Bush of lying America into the Iraq War.

This was said in response to Charles Krauthammer telling his fellow "Inside Washington" panelists that this all too common media assertion is the "essential untruth of this decade" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GORDON PETERSON, HOST: What’s happened to honest objective reporting?

EVAN THOMAS, NEWSWEEK: Well, I’m not sure there ever was honest objective reporting, but there is an interesting thing going on. You would think with the internet and cable and all these new outlets, more information should mean more truth. The more information, the freer, the more open it is should mean more truth. But I worry that the opposite has happened. That, there, it’s now more possible for untruth to adhere, to take hold. In the example that people were talking about this week was this thing that got out from first the Indian press, then to Drudge, then to the right wing radio guys and then Congress that Obama was spending $200 million a day on his foreign trip which was just nonsense. It was finally knocked down. But, you start to wonder, you hear, people get their information by the internet, by e-mails from their Uncle Joe. You know, if that’s where they are getting their information, is it possible that real untruth will take hold in a way that we didn’t think was possible in our system?

NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: I think that this a, this is worrisome, and it’s left and right. It’s the people who think the Bush administration somehow was responsible for 9/11, or that a trip that clearly costs in total something like five or six million at the most, and it’s really 200 million. It’s not the same, I mean a day. They’re, they’re not the same in importance obviously, but, but, this really, the fact that there is no -- there doesn’t seem to be any factual agreement about anything allows us to sort of entertain the most odd and conspiratorial fantasies.

PETERSON: Well, when Walter Cronkite was doing the news, we had ABC, we had NBC, we had CBS, we had the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago papers and so forth. We didn’t have all these myriad sources of information which, there was sort of a standard belief about things, Charles.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Right, and it, the gatekeepers were largely bicoastal liberals, and there was, and people would take their news from the front page of the New York Times. Now you have competition. People are all upset. I must say speaking about weird conspiracy theories which develop into untruth, people are all worried about, you know, a detail about Obama’s trip. The essential untruth of this decade was that George Bush, a president, lied us into war, an act of treason, he deliberately distorted the facts knowing that there were no weapons of mass destruction. Lied us into war. It wasn’t that he made a mistake. Lied us into war, which is not only widely held, it was, it’s, it’s, it’s repeated by columnists in the New York Times, by Democratic leaders. It’s not just internet weird stuff, and I don’t remember my liberal colleagues being upset about the death of truth at that point.

PETERSON: But we never did find weapons of mass destruction as I recall.

KRAUTHAMMER: That doesn’t mean he lied us into war. There’s a big difference.

TOTENBERG: The truth was there were no weapons of mass destruction.

MARK SHIELDS, PBS: It was a question of reckless and negligent taking the nation to war on a totally flawed and false premise.

KRAUTHAMMER: Are you denying that Democratic leaders have accused Bush of lying us into war?

MARK SHIELDS: I have never heard a Democratic leader, we have to define who Democratic leaders, I never heard a Democratic candidate for president say this, or anybody who was in question for that. But I think we are in a different time and a different era. We can talk about the new outlets and everything else. Nobody ever questioned that John Kennedy was a Catholic or Ronald Reagan was a Presbyterian or Harry Truman was a Baptist or Richard Nixon was a Quaker. But when you get a large segment questioning whether Barack Obama is a Christian, whether in fact he’s an American, and that number is growing, then I’ll tell you, that’s the byproduct of what you are describing, of irresponsible unedited and unaccountable information being circulated both in broadcast, internet, and in print.

Was Shields out of the country during the 2004 presidential campaign? Did he somehow miss many of the Democratic presidential candidates at that time making the "Bush lied" assertion including Howard Dean and the eventual nominee John Kerry?

What's fascinating is Shields would make this claim in a segment that began with the host asking, "What’s happened to honest objective reporting" to be followed by Thomas's "Is it possible that real untruth will take hold in a way that we didn’t think was possible in our system?"

Yeah, I'd say that's possible, Evan, given the number of people on the left that have regularly espoused the untruth that Bush lied to get the nation into the Iraq War.

Also curious was Shields equating Obama's religion issue with the press mimicking the "Bush Lied" Democrat talking point.

It seems quite clear Shields finds the former far worse than the latter.

Color me very unsurprised.

d1carter is with most Americans who "never watch or listen to these guys anymore."

If the lamestream dinosaur legacy media were actually powerful today, Obama would have a 75% or higher approval rating, and the conservative tsunami of 2010 would have never happened. With years of non-stop cheerleading from the media for Obama and the Dems, the Reps swept into power, and after the state houses clean the voter roles, the 2012 elections are likely to be another clean sweep.

It is precisely because they are so irrelevant that the libtard media scream so loudly their falsehoods of which they wish to convince themselves and others.

What seen in that discussion is the fraying at the edges and coming apart of liberals and the Dems.  They are like a fighter who has taken too many head shots early in the fight and have become so punch drunk that they whale away at anything moving in front of them.  They are losing their grip on the national government, the national conversation, and any meaningful influence.  BarryO is embarassing them with his continued failures.  Now when anyone impunes a weakness about them, the liberals and the Dems start thrashing away with meaningless and sometimes absurd comments which are veiled attempts to show that they still have relevance.  It's fun to watch and even funner when you see BarryO, Nancy, or Barney act that way.  Pure entertainment.

At least the TSA is now going to refrain from subjecting the airline pilots from the invasive pat downs. I think that was most farcical aspect of the farce which is the present system;  treating everyone as a suspect. Isn't the pilot already trusted to fly the damn PLANE? And what greater weapon could there be than the aircraft the pilot will be in control of? How ludicrous! Make sure he doesn't have any explosive devices on him before he takes off with a load of jet fuel! I'm surprised the pilots put up with that crap for as long as they did.

"It was a question of reckless and negligent taking the nation to war on a totally flawed and false premise."

Your bias is showing again, Mark.  Who are YOU to claim that Bush's actions were "reckless" and "negligent" and that the numerous reasons (WMD's were only one reason, there were several others, you liberal hack!) were "totally flawed" or "false?"

Here's a suggestion, Mark:  When discussing bias in the news, it's a good idea to keep your own bias in check.  But you can't do that, can you? And we know why, don't we?  Yes, we know that your completely biased and NOTHING you do will elevate that bias as you're incapable of unbiased thought. You don't even understand the term, which is causing the problem.

Saddam was the liar and the MSM took his side.

Submitted by Ashrak on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 2:39pm.

Roughly 500 binary chemical munitions, which Saddam's Iraq had claimed to have been destroyed, were recovered. This is aside from the mobile production units that Colin Powell talked about at the U.N., whiv Saddam's Iraw denied existed (but when found were explained away as for maybe weather baloons) and how about the centrifuge and nuclear bomb schematics buried since 1991 in a rose garden. Then we see gobs and gobs of 55 gallon drums, in ammo dumps, labeled "pesticide".

The scud missile launchers and the fuel for them and oh there was also those missile engines and bodies, which constituted proscribed items, found in other nation's scrapyards. And then there is that issue about the convoy that went to Syria on the ground and a great deal of flight that went there as well. Gee, why wouldn't Syria allow the world to see what went there? Maybeit had to do with all that oil that Saddam was pumping into that country outside of the sanction parameters of that corrupt Oil for Food program.

When it comes down to it, I always found Ghadaffi's emense nuclear program and infratructure a wee it convenient as well.

School after school, not to mention Mosques (see Falluja or even Sadr's presence at the ALI Mosque in Najaf) were filled with all kinds of guns, ammunition, grenades, RPGs and mines as well. Let us not forget, something as simple as that is a weapons of mass destruction per the U.N itself.  Saddam had those things stored there baiting their destruction in attempt to create propaganda.

At the top of my list is that 687 nailed Saddam for internation terrorism. Sadam admitted to, as did Palestinians, that Saddam's Iraq was funding terrorism outside it's borders. Amazing isn;t it that Saddam's downfall saw the end of the daily bombings in Israel that had been steady for years?  It is prudent to remember that Saddam also made an attempt to assasinate a formr President of this country.

Let us remember that on the eve of Hans Blix declaring Iraq WMD free in the mid 1990's, a hidden nuclear program was exposed via defection and honesty. Uncovered at a turkey farm was a nuclear program far more advanced than we had contemplated, nuch less new about.

Saddam was the liar. Saddam was the dictator. Saddam was the war criminal. Saddam was the cause and reason for resumption for war in Iraq. We accepted Resolution 687 as his "punishment" for his actions regarding Kuwait. Our soldiers shed their blood to gain that Resolution and even though we stood down an entire two term presidency, affording Saddam the ability to fund terrorism abroad from hamas to al qaeda, it was right and proper to exact Saddam's removal for failure to comply on that note alone.

W isn't guilty of telling lies to start a war, he exposed the liars and resumed a war that began long before he was even President. When he left office, he left behind an agreed to framework with the elected government of a newly born, a newly freed nation. Nothing proves this more than watching the darling of the left, the "One" who stomped around this country for years slamming Bush, honoring that agreement and carrying it out as agreed to.

Thise guilty of the spreading of misinformation are the very ones decrying the ending of their stranglehold of the position of arbiter of information. The "filter" that is the MSM is clogged with leftist ideology and it will now have to watch history laugh at it for falling hard from the perch it created for itself.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Two things to be sure

Submitted by exLib on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 3:01pm.

When the media goes after your Christianity, you are doing something right.  Their hatred for anyone who is a strong Christian, how they go after them and try to knock them down, find a flaw.

Bush's Christianity was constantly being challenged by the left as a vote-getting tool and saying what fool would pray about going to war or saying they depended on God's guidance  during tough circumstances.  Things that define a Christian.

That guy we are suppose to question his Christianity, because he took us to war.

On the other hand, there's a guy who has gone to church ONCE since becoming POTUS, and that once strangely enough happened the week before the election - no cynicism there, I guess.   This guy balks at expressing his faith publicly, in fact a few select recording of him speaking has him dissing those who "Cling to Religion" when tough times come.

THIS guy the media is CoNSTANTLY telling us, he's a Christian.  You've got to be suspicious when the the media is telling you as fact, that this guy is a Christian.  The same people who say you can't tell what is in a person's heart.  The same people who say actions speak louder than words.  these same people want to TELL us, he's a Christian because they say so.

So, The Media thinks Evangelicals are idiots for their beliefs and acting on those beliefs.  YET, thinks Obama should be lauded and respected for having the same beliefs but not acting on them.

MSM lies every day .. MSM (Shields) don't care

Here's one:

CNN. Transcript Jan 18, 2009

FAREED ZAKARIA, HOST: This is GPS, the GLOBAL PUBLIC SQUARE. Welcome to all of you in the United States and around the world. I'm Fareed Zakaria.
We have a great show for you today, but first a few thoughts.

This is the last program that we will do while George W. Bush is president of the United States. And whatever history's judgment will be, he leaves office the most unpopular president in modern history. Different people have been angry or disappointed by Bush for different reasons -- Iraq, Guantanamo, Katrina, torture, all of the above.

But I think the single most significant bad decision George Bush made came early in his presidency. It was a decision widely applauded at the time, and with much bipartisan support.

Remember the Bush tax cuts? Well, think about their effect on America

In 2000, the Clinton administration had almost balanced the federal budget, and the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office was projecting that over the next 10 years the United States would have surpluses that would add up to $5.6 trillion -- yes, trillion.

By the spring of 2002, two thirds of that projected surplus had evaporated, and the rest disappeared soon thereafter.

There were many reasons for this, out-of-control spending being one. But by far the lion's share of the surpluses went into the tax cuts.

By the spring of 2002, Mr. Fareed Zakaria, some $40 billion in tax rebates had been sent out to Americans to help fend off the effects of the recession that President Bush had inherited. The tax rebates were put into the larger stimuls package at the request of leading Democrats - Daschle, Kucinich, and Lieberman, to be percise.

$40 Billion vs $Trillions. See, the problem really is with education. Zakaria must have skipped his math classes.

By the way, Mr. Zakaria, how do you feel about Obama's $trillions in spending?

Want more, don't ya?

Note: "The truth is," projections were purely fictional. Once the dot.com bubble economic collapsed - all of the projected surpluses would quickly turn into deficits. Even the progressive economist Dean Baker, understood that.

LOL !!!!!!!! . However...   "One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."
--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."
--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."
--Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
--Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

One of my favorites from the liberal "war hero"

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."

I love seeing week after week these left wing bomb throwing douchebags, sitting around a table on National TV, five of them to one conservative opining about the " good old days " before telling the truth to the American people was in vogue.

They still turn to one another after every false statement looking for verbal collusion or at the very least a juvenile high five in the form of a snicker or backhanded remark aimed at either the subject at hand or the lone conservative on the panel.

I think a new rule ought to be put forward, then adhered to whereby  these lopsided & patently unfair  panels of four or five progressives to one conservatives can no longer take place.

The lone conservative must either allow the others to gather six or seven more of their pathetic ilk or he/she will on every third topic, pretend to be as clueless as his/her opponents. Otherwise it's like taking " Happy Meals " away from a really big bunch of whiny, pee pee pants babies.

It is becoming tiring hearing

Submitted by BD on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 6:08pm.

It is becoming tiring hearing of "The good old days" when only accredited liberals like Cronkite had a mechanism to spread the "truth" to the American People.  Liberals love to wax on about those good old days - simply because now they are losing the battle for message.

Remember, in the good old days Walter C told us that the North Vietnamese Army's Tet offensive was an unmitigated disaster for the US troops when in fact it was exactly what they had been praying for for years?  Yeah, please don't take me back there again.

He is best who is trained in the severest school." -Thucydides, "History of the Peloponnesian War" (431-404 B.C.)

Has Schields ever said a word that makes any sense? he himself has said Bush lied. He is so arrogant and wants so much to be one of the elite in DC  and the more he talks the dumber he sounds. He is a prime example of radical libs on PBS

The Gloves are Off.

Lincoln divided the people into three groups

All of the people whom you can fool some of the time.

Some of the People whom you can fool all of the time

And all of the people whom you can not fool all of the time.

The Democrats have decided that only the constituency worth perusing is the people who can be fooled all of the time.  In most cases they work very hard to fool themselves.

In 2012 can the people who are fooled all of the time be a voting plurality?

Does he listen to himself

Does he listen to himself when he talks. This is so absurd to make a claim like that.

It wouldn't be politics if someone wasn't lying.

Submitted by Crash on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 9:21am.

What may be a closer statement of fact is that the Democrat's are (were) the  benefactors when the  MSM print numerous news stories and books using DNC talking points. Plus, most Democrat leaders were already on record giving the same argument that President Bush gave on why President Clinton should forcefully remove Saddam Hussein from power.

The Late Tim Russert confronted Harry Reid with this: When the president talked about Yucca Mountain and moving the nation's nuclear waste there, you were very, very, very strong in your words. You said, "President Bush is a liar. He betrayed Nevada and he betrayed the country."

Sure, Reid wasn't talking about Iraq, but, this goes against Shield's assertion that Obama is a victim of being called meanie names by blogger's & demagogue(r's).

Nazi Pelosi said this, "The president led us into the Iraq war on the basis of unproven assertions without evidence ..."

What's an unproven assertion in botoxese?

Howard Dean Presidential at debate; Q: Under what circumstances is it OK for a president or someone speaking on his or her behalf to lie to the American public?

A: I can't think of any circumstances, with the possible exception of some sort of national-security matter - if some piece of information were put out that would endanger American lives or some circumstance under which peoples' lives would be in danger or something of that sort.

What and whom would the moderator and Howard have been referring to in December 2003?

"About all I can say for the United States Senate is that it opens with a prayer and closes with an investigation."

Yo, Marky Mark. As sad as it

Submitted by TCinAZ on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 6:51pm.

Yo, Marky Mark. As sad as it is for me to Say that you're sorrily Mistaken, it must be nice to Know that your Funky Bunch of Truthers are good For Something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnV_pNe_BB0

NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: I think that this a, this is worrisome, and it’s left and right. It’s the people who think the Bush administration somehow was responsible for 9/11, or that a trip that clearly costs in total something like five or six million at the most, and it’s really 200 million.

Yeah Right. And it was President Reagan who Created Al-Qaeda, because we sold them a few Stingers, and Charlie Wilson's Movie dropped the blame for their exisiting Today in His Lap Too, even though The Gipper NEVER Promised them that he was gonna rebuild that Pashtunhole into some sort of Paradise on Earth for them! Right Nina?

So it wasn't Carter and Zbig who built Al-Qaeda and it Wasn't Their CIA who funded and Trained them, and it Wasn't Carter and Zbig who promised them that we were gonna build them their 72 Treats "Happy Place" after they'd defeated the Soviets! No. It was President Reagan.

Ergo, Democrat Leaders HAVE Lied to Republicans and HAVE been Lying about Republican Presidents Lying Us Into Wars (And Proxy Wars Too) since I was KID, Mr. Shields!

e.g, The end of what soon became commonly known as "Nixon's War".

EXCUSE Me!? Richard Nixon was President of the United States from 69-74. However, History and Math class have taught me that we had our Military advisors in Vietnam from 55' and that they'd grown in number to 16,000 by 1963! So that's Six Years Short of his Being POTUS (by My math) to call Vietnam, His War. Unless of course, Your side was trying to Smear him with that, because He was actually trying to WIN The War and Not Forsake the Almost 60,000 Mens lives Lost in it!?

Not To Mention His trying to Also Win it for those who'd Fought in it, Survived it, and who were then treated so Righteously by today's Obama Commie Left upon their Return Home, Mr Shields!

Here is a good reason for why I want my money back from PBS.

Submitted by needle on Mon, 11/22/2010 - 8:09am.

“I have never heard a Democratic leader, we have to define who Democratic leaders, I never heard a Democratic candidate for president say this, or anybody who was in question for that….” says Mark Shields.

So Mark Shields double down in lying about the “essential untruth of this decade” and then manipulates the discussion away from that essential point.

- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.
