Christie Again Defends Limbaugh on 'Ed Show': You Weren't Outraged When Belafonte Called Powell and Rice Slaves

Ed Schultz on Tuesday ratcheted up his anger over Rush Limbaugh's "Driving Miss Nancy" comments basically calling for the conservative talk radio host to be fired.

For the second time in the last three "Ed Shows," Republican strategist Ron Christie was there to add some sanity to the discussion pointing out the "double standard about applying racial outrage when it deals with black Democrats as it deals with black Republicans."

"I don't remember any outrage on the air waves, on your show or on Joe's show, when Harry Belafonte referred to Colin Powell and Dr. Condoleezza Rice as house slaves" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ED SCHULTZ, HOST: Now, let`s get some rapid fire response from our panel on these stories. I want the reaction to Rush`s racist tirade about the leadership fight in the Democratic Party. And it has been war between the incoming oversight Chairman Darrell Issa, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich. A source tells me that Kucinich is running to be the ranking member of the committee because he thinks Issa is going to make a mockery of the oversight process.

With us tonight, Joe Madison, XM satellite radio talk show host and Ron Christie, republican strategist and author of the book "Acting White: The Curious History of a Racial Slur." Joe, your response to the story we just had.

JOE MADISON, XM SATELLITE RADIO HOST: Well, my response is something that Shelia Jackson Lee probably can`t say but I will say it. Rush Limbaugh is not too big to fail. What it is really going to require is black and white. I wouldn`t put it all on the black caucus or black America. I think there are many white Americans who are outraged by this. And Ed, what it boils down to is the marketplace. You identify the sponsors, you tell the sponsors that if you continue to financially support this type of action, these types of words, these insinuations, racial insults and he is not a satirist, he tries to impact public policy, let me make this clear, because that`s what Ron is going to say.

SCHULTZ: Yes, Ron go ahead.

MADISON: He impacts public policy. So, let`s put it -- let`s get to the bottom line.

SCHULTZ: Ron, what about it?

MADISON: The reason everybody else went down is money.

SCHULTZ: Yes.

RON CHRISTIE, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: I think, look, this case is far overblown. I think there are far more important issues facing the country. As I said at the other day when we had this conversation with you two gentlemen, I think the Driving Miss Nancy thing was satire and it was a joke. I wasn`t racially offended, I didn`t look at it as being offensive. What I do find offensive unfortunately is there seems to be a double standard about applying racial outrage when it deals with black Democrats as it deals with black Republicans. I don`t remember any outrage on the air waves, on your show or on Joe`s show, when Harry Belafonte referred to Colin Powell and Dr. Condoleezza Rice as house slaves.

MADISON: Slow down, Ron. Slow down, Ron.

CHRISTIE: Hang on a second.

MADISON: No, slow down.

CHRISTIE: Hang on a second. I`m furnishing my point.

MADISON: No, you brought my name up.

CHRISTIE: I brought your name up. I said, I don`t recall it, are you going to let me finish my point?

(CROSSTALK)

MADISON: America -- he didn`t listen to my show.

CHRISTIE: Are you going to let me finish my point?

MADISON: No. You brought my name.

CHRISTIE: My point of the matter is.

MADISON: You said Joe, I did take on Harry Belafonte. So, correct yourself.

CHRISTIE: I`m going to let you in when you stop -- my point is...

MADISON: Correct yourself right now. Correct yourself.

CHRISTIE: Outrage.

(TALKING OVER EACH OTHER)

SCHULTZ: All right, gentlemen. All right.

CHRISTIE: My point is there`s selective outrage in the media as it relates to black Republicans. If you took that on your show, Joe, good for you but if you are the one, I don`t remember hearing any other voices out there.

SCHULTZ: Ron. Hold on a second, the standard has been set by certain companies. Was there selective outrage when Imus lost his job or when Dr. Laura, you know, went through what she went through? I mean, the bottom line is this. Limbaugh is too big to fail. That is the determination of many people out there.

MADISON: No he is not.

SCHULTZ: And there is a company out there that just allows racist comments on the air. Now, I graphic up some of the things that he said. Ron, are they racist or not to say about.

CHRISTIE: I`m not here to defend everything that Rush Limbaugh said.

MADISON: Answer the question, Ron. Answer the question. Is it racist or not?

CHRISTIE: For goodness sakes, are you going to let me finish or you`re going to just sit there and filibuster?

MADISON: No, I`m going to insist you answer questions.

CHRISTIE: Well, you can insist all you want, Joe, there are people who have comments.

(CROSSTALK)

MADISON: You dodge. You dodge, you dodge.

CHRISTIE: I do not dodge. You know it is so.

SCHULTZ: Gentlemen, we need an hour to do this.

CHRISTIE: There is so much racial outrage, there are so many real problems in this country and you guys just want to say, oh, Rush Limbaugh. Why don`t you deal with the fact that the fact of the matter is, I think it is racist, if you can want to talk about racist, the Democrats are running around trying to make up a position for James Clyburn so they doesn`t get pushed out.

SCHULTZ: Ron Christie, good to have you with us tonight.

CHRISTIE: That`s the outrage.

SCHULTZ: Joe Madison. Pleasure having you guys on.

CHRISTIE: Take care.

SCHULTZ: Always a spirited discussion.

For those that have forgotten, Belafonte in October 2002, while speaking to a radio station in San Diego, referred to then Secretary of State Colin Powell as a plantation slave:

"There's an old saying," Belafonte began. "In the days of slavery, there were those slaves who lived on the plantation and were those slaves that lived in the house. You got the privilege of living in the house if you served the master... exactly the way the master intended to have you serve him.

"Colin Powell's committed to come into the house of the master. When Colin Powell dares to suggest something other than what the master wants to hear, he will be turned back out to pasture."

He later told CNN's Larry King that he not only stood by those comments, but also that they applied to then National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

Same stupid crap everyday just meant to let them all scream at each other. Christie is much better earlier in the day when there's a conversation and not a freak show.

You do know he's a gay guy, right?

CHRISTIE (Not Gay): Hang on a second.

MADISON (Kinda Gay): No, slow down.

CHRISTIE (Not Gay): Hang on a second. I`m furnishing my point.

gay? who cares?

Submitted by Mazzi on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 2:47pm.

No one cares if he's gay. Most of us feel as though it's none of our business, as is the personal sex life of anyone.  What bothers me, and others, I believe, is when gays insist on vocalizing their sexual preferences at every opportunity, and demand special treatment because of their sexual proclivities.

As long as relationship participants are adults and are happy with their relationship it is NONE OF MY BUSINESS - whether they be the same gender, or even if they like the kinky stuff. NOMB, and none of anyone else's either.

What is an interesting lib trick though is when they demand that liberal gays be dragged, kicking and screaming, out of the closet. The conservative closet-dwellers just get rumored and innuendoed about - shamed, if you will - by the same libs who insist that "gay and pride" are actually a single word.

Madison Loses (Again)

The freak show was Christie's fault? To borrow from the estimable Chris Matthews, have you been hypnotized? Madison demagogued the instant Christie scored a point, and Madison knew he had no comeback. It's Saul Alinsky's Rule For Radicals rule number one.

Christie is gay? So the eff what? Anyone who tells the truth has credibility. Anyone who lies is a douche bag. You figure out which is which. Oh, that's right, you can't.

Sure, Schultz, let's convince Rush to fire himself

I heard Rush at the time

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:23pm.

When Rush made his "Driving Miss Nancy" comment, I knew the Left would have a conniption fit- and they were so predictable that they did!  The point is that Pelosi will not relinquish her death grip on power even though her policies have proved to devastate the Democrat Party in the last election.  Thus, Steny Hoyer, who was Pelosi's chief competition for Speaker when she ran the first time, was in a position of having to compete with Clyburn for the Whip position- and the Democrats couldn't allow that to happen.  Rush had read the article positing that the competition for the number 2 spot was more about perks than anything else- a car and driver, more money for staff, etc.  So, the "Driving Miss Nancy" reference was apt.

The best part of the Left's psuedo-outrage is that they obviously didn't see the movie.  Jessica Tandy's character thought far more highly of her employee and chauffer, Morgan Freeman's character, than she did of her son, Dan Ackroyd's character.  Morgan Freeman was the man of honor, honesty and caring, while Ackroyd's character was a self-centered, lying, user.

I cannot decide if the Dems are just stupid or pretend ignorance to advance their point of view.  I suspect the latter.  I am just delighted that Pelosi will remain the face of the House Dems and that she has created an imaginary post for James Clyburn.  It makes Rush's point.

Fire Rush?

Submitted by stan25 on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:27pm.

How can someone fire themselves when they own the company? The only way that Rush LImbaugh is going off the air, is if he decides to quit. We all know that Rush's syndication partner is not going to drop him — he brings in a megabasket of revenue for them. If they do drop Rush, there are other syndication nets that are willing to pick him up and gladly do it.

Forget about boycotting advertisers, they like the business that Rush brings in. The advertisers are competing with each other to see if they can get a spot on his show, so if someone drops Rush, there are others to fill the hole. So, in a nutshell, the ones that need firing are Sgt Schutz and his cohorts at PMSNBC.

Rush was having too much fun with this

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:28pm.

He knew this would be the reaction when he said it last week.  He had a great "Driving Miss Nancy" photoshop up that was (almost) on a par with BKeyser's work.

The media are so bloody predictable.  Rush just pre-wads their knickers for them.  The liberal commentariat are the real hypocrites here, Clyburn was good enough before, but not now, when the leadership perks aren't quite as fat.  Why aren't they outraged about Nanny's diss of the black man?  Nope, easier to target Rush Limbaugh's hilarious solution to Nanny's little problemo.

As long as Rush keeps them screaming like banshees, I'm a happy camper.

What is it with Christie?

Submitted by Morganfrost on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:31pm.

I admire his courage, but why is he wasting his time casting pearls before swine?  This is the standard MSNBC show tactic-- invite the conservative on the show, but shout him down or talk over him when he says anything that implies disagreement with lib talking points, and never-- ever-- let him finish a sentence.

Liberals cannot let

Submitted by Smartypants on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 4:47pm.

Liberals cannot let conservatives finish talking, because the conservative will blow them out of the water almost every time.  They have to respond in anger and in mock outrage.  I cannot watch these shows anymore for this very reason.  The libs always get to present their side of things.  For the most part, the conservative will allow them to finish.  Once it is the conservative's turn to speak, the "debate" quickly becomes a shout fest, because the lib invariably will start talking over the other person.  They cannot tolerate an opposing view.

Let's face it, the heart of the lib agenda is driven from emotion, generally anger.  They are mad at one thing or another and believe conservatives are out to get them and ruin their lives.  As a result, everything a conservative says is seen as an attack.  I've experienced this personally as reactions from libs to even minor inconsequential points are met with disproportionate responses from the left.  If you do not agree wholeheartedly with their agenda, something is wrong with you--and you must be destroyed.

Such feigned one-sided

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:43pm.

Such feigned one-sided outrage from the libs. Furthermore, Limbaugh's comment wasn't racist at all. Schultz is trying to manufacture a controversy where none is present. This too will die.

And unless something completely unexpected occurs I expect Limbaugh's show to be on the air far longer than Schutz's.

BTW, Limbaugh's sponsors are now used to the feigned outrage and they pay little heed to all the threats of boycotts. What's ironic is that several of Limbaugh's sponsors also sponsor Schultz's show. Don't hear that fact from Special Ed.

Submitted by grammajane on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 12:42pm.

The only argument schultz has, is calling Rush a racist. He is so jealous of Rush's audience.Notice he allowed the other guy take over the conversation and didn't give Christie a chance to even talk over . Why Christie goes on that show is beyond me. In fact, why would anyone go on the lowest ranking show in history.

I think he needs to catch a ride back to Earth from his perch up there on the XM bird. Get back and have an up close look at things. First thing he should get a grip on is the enormous economic strength behind Rush Limbaugh.

So what, does he think 20 million listeners are going to wander on down the dial just because a few whinny-a**ed liberals want him to fail? Hasn’t worked over the last umpteen years.

Keep the Clue Bat handy in case he should drop by NB.

Rush's Sponsors

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 2:35pm.

Joe Madison is clueless about Rush's sponsors pulling their advertising from his radio show.  They have become successful because they advertise on Rush's show, and have a good product:

Select Comfort Bed:  I own two of them.  Best bed every made.

Lumber Liqjuidators:  When it came time to put down hardwood floors, there is no way I was going to make my purchase from anywhere else.  The hardwood they sell is of the highest quality and the best price I found.

Carbonite, Life Lock, and a tons of other "Real Product" companies advertise on Rush's program.  Rush screens the companies involved and they become more of a partner with Rush then a paid advertiser.  Any attempt to "boycott" Rush's sponsors will only create a larger audience.

Madiso Is Silly

Submitted by rammingspeed on Wed, 11/17/2010 - 5:43pm.

Get to the sponsors? The libs started trying that in the '90s and failed horribly. Many people went out and bought double and triple the products just because the douche bags told them not to.

Limbaugh has succeeded, and prospered wildly, because he tells the truth. It's common sense, to those who are mature enough to get it. Limbaugh is also a supreme entertainer, and the combination of truth and entertainment overwhelms the sludge put out by the phony-ass American liberal "progressives."

Once the lies were exposed, Nov. 2nd came around and kicked the libs' teeth out. And it's only the beginning.
