In a perfect example of how the mainstream media often channels liberal blogosphere hysteria, what is destined to be called "Handgate" -- Sarah Palin's use of crib notes at Saturday's National Tea Party convention -- was all the rage on CNN Monday.
The network's political editor was even wheeled out to discuss the matter -- as if somehow threatening to national security! -- informing viewers how absurd it was for the former Alaska governor to mock President Obama's use of a teleprompter when she is "using the same kind of aids."
Yep. A teleprompter with EVERY WORD one is going to say in front of a group written on it -- even when speaking at an elementary school!!! -- is the same as having a few words written on your hand (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript and commentary):
MARK PRESTON, CNN POLITICAL EDITOR: I've reached out to her spokeswoman just to ask these questions: Did she write on her hand; if she did, why did she do so? Look, the fact that she wrote on her hand isn't really that big of a deal. We all work off of notes certainly in television. But the fact that she was critical of President Obama, and called him, "That charismatic guy with the teleprompter," and as you just saw, I looked down at my notes to give that direct quote. It's very hard to be critical of one person when you yourself are using the same kind of aids when you're speaking.
Amazing hypocrisy, wouldn't you say?
After all, they first bashed Palin for having these notes, then bashed her for mocking Obama's teleprompter. Yet, Preston, after admitting that he needed to look at his notes to accurately quote SIX WORDS, concluded you shouldn't "be critical of one person when you yourself are using the same kind of aids when you're speaking."
Maybe he should take his own advice.
For the record, CNN addressed Palin's notes every hour Monday morning between 6:00 and 9:00. Transcripts are not yet available for later hours.
As such, it's fairly clear the network has decided this is a pivotal story, and the goal is to attack Palin while diminishing the significance of Obama's dependence on his teleprompter.
And people think there's a liberal bias in the media.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 01:15 ET by MrShyDoing this IS sort of unique and a bit odd for a politician -- or a temporary citizen with obvious ambitions, like Palin. But really, it's very much her... it's quite the folksy way of going about things, vs. having notes on cards.
It just makes her very different and, really, her own person. But alas, the left, in their blind revulsion of her, just want to view it as stupid and juvenile (which is merely projection on their part. :p)

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 00:28 ET by Cool ArrowHave you considered the problem is exactly what you've stated?
Why on earth should there be a difference between the mannerism of our spokespersons and the people they represent?
If this was the leader of some local Union, I dare say you wouldn't find it silly.
She scribbled a handy reference onto her hand! It's just hilarious that you find it "odd" and "silly" because, in your opinion, she would exude more gravitas if she were getting her thoughts from a teleprompter.
At least what she writes on her hand, she can pronounce.
O corpse man My corpse man.
Barack Ѡbama - Nero on the Potomac
I didn't know writing notes
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 00:38 ET by balboaI didn't know writing notes on your hand was a mannerism.
→ Maybe it's not
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 00:45 ET by Cool ArrowAnd the point you're missing is that what you call "silly" and "odd" is endearing to many Americans who wouldn't, for a minute, think less of an individual for writing a note on his/her hand.
Now when Obama mispronounces a word from his teleprompter, it's obvious those are not his words he's parroting.
But Balboa attacks Sarah's own words, which she wrote, on her hand.
Barack Ѡbama - O corpse man, My corpse man!
It's ONLY endearing because
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 00:49 ET by balboaIt's ONLY endearing because it's a mavericky conservative. That's it.
→ No, balboa
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 01:09 ET by Cool ArrowI don't see anything "mavericky" about Sarah employing a simple solution to an OBTW moment, before going on air.
I wish I could say she did it just to catch your reaction, that would be a heck of a chess move.
Is it OK if I say "heck"? It doesn't make me look too "silly" or "odd" does it?
Barack Ѡbama - O corpse man, My corpse man

Mon, 02/08/2010 - 22:31 ET by Gat New YorkI tried very hard to stop him. You have no idea, but McCain did not help.
Now I want him out and Palin is not the candidate to do it.
After Obama, voters want substance and credibility. There are a litany of GOP candidates who will be fitting that bill. So far Palin as not shown that and I will bet that the crib notes unfortunately finished her. Palin was someone who could not afford to make a a mistake given how she was framed by the media. the image of those five words was an enormous mistake once a campaign begins.

If you mean there is a list of GOP candidates, I don't see how any of them stack up as being more credentialed than Palin except for their accumulated time in Washington, D.C., which I see as a distinct reason not to favor them over Palin.

Marketing a candidate is the ability to create a credible impession of a substantive leader regardless of whether that person really is substantive (i.e. Obama).
I don't know who is handling Sarah but they are not doing a good job on polishing her image. I really wish people here realized the implications of those crib notes. While it may dissipate for now, once she engages in primaries it will come roaring back to haunt her. The liberal media does not want Sarah Palin to succeed. She just gave them ammunition.

I'm not "bashing" Palin -
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 22:27 ET by Gat New YorkI'm not "bashing" Palin - just calling it as I see it as a marketing professional.
You're already seeing more and more conservatives in the media questioning her judgement and ability including someone I know who is a conservative columnist (privately - not in writing).
There was a segment on Red Eye (3AM satire on FoxNews) and a couple of conservatives on there including Margaret Hoover were not happy with the crib notes - one of the pundits made the observation that she's a conservative, so you shouldn't need reminder notes on your hand for "taxes" and "budget cuts" which is a good point.
One article even coined it the "hillbilly palm pilot."
There is a long road to go and anything can happen, but unless she recognizes the problem nothing will change for her.
In marketing, the axiom is to show the people your audience wants to aspire to be - not who they are. Sarah and Reagan were populists. Sarah is one of us who recites what we all believe and can rally the base like a cheerleader. Reagan inspired the base and was a leader.
The left media know she is not another Reagan. What they fear is that she will develop to be one. "Hillbilly palm pilots" only serve to reinforce those negative impressions of Palin.
We get it - you don't like her.
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 22:30 ET by Free StinkerYou come to a site about media bias, and then you use that same media bias as your example(s) of how Sarah Palin is not the right candidate for 2012.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 22:42 ET by matthewdeanYou may see things through the eyes of a marketing professional, but I'll tell you what I see through the eyes of a consumer:
While I'm sure the coiner is hopping around bragging about coming up with the phrase, the coining of "Hillbilly palm pilot" don't mean jack sh*t to Sarah Palin.
You keep mentioning all these "problems" that she is going to have to both recognize and then overcome.
Well, if they are real problems, she will either rectify those problems, or not.
Margaret Hoover is not the staunch conservative you make her out to be. While she and "other conservatives" are bemoaning the "writing on of hands", Palin is laughing and joking and being herself.
I seriously doubt this incident is going to damage her; in all likelihood, it has increased her stature many times over.
Except in the eyes of a few pundits and marketing professionals, of course.

You're giving far to much credence to appearance. Americans are more likely to vote for someone based upon their political connections, or lack thereof, than their "appearance." The history of the last several Presidential elections points to this.
Obama, just like Bush W, Reagan, Carter, and Clinton were elected not because of their appearance, but because of the fact that they were not Washington insiders. You see, ever since Nixon, the American people have been wary of Washington insiders gaining the White House.
This Insider aversion is what is driving political elections these days, especially in Presidential Elections. Just about every time a Washington insider, like McCain, has faced someone who's not a Washington insider, like Obama, those insiders lose. McCain's election was actually helped by the inclusion of Palin, who's Washington outsider, as his running mate. I have no doubt that she is the one who brought him so close to the Presidency.
Bush Sr, was the only "insider" (due to the fatc that he was VP foir 8 years) since Nixon who was elected to a first term, and that's because he never faced serious opposition from Washington outsiders. Once he faces competition from an outsider, in the form of Governor Clinton, Bush lost. That wasn't because Clinton's appearance was better than Bush's. It's because Clinton was not a Washington insider.
This anti-insider trend is even true for Congressional elections, although that aversion to Washington insiders is affecting those election at a far slower rate, mostly because of the difficulty new candidates face against an entrenched incumbent. (Due to term limits, Presidential candidates have a far better chance at beating the entrenched insiders. I mean, how hard is it to beat someone who can't, by law, even run for that office?) But even those incumbents are facing stiffer and stiffer opposition and are beginning to lose. Look at all the first time Senators and Representatives that have been elected in the last 10 as an example.
All of this has NOTHING to do with appearance. It has everything to do with political influences on the office holder. It has everything to do with a paradigm shift of the voting pubic itself. Americans are tired of the Washington insider power structure, and they're re looking for change. That's why Obama won, and that's why Palin has so much support, especially amongst independents.
The reason Obama is currently losing popularity is because he's relying to much on those Washington insiders to formulate policy instead of relying upon himself, a Washington outsider, which is what the people wanted. Look how he relied upon the House and Senate to formulate his Health Care policies, something the majority of Americans are rejecting. That's a perfect example of how Americans are rejecting the "Washington
Insider" power structure.
Appearance? That's just a weapon the insiders use in their political battles. It's a lousy weapon though as it's not very effective.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 00:15 ET by Gat New YorkIt was the appearance of not being a Washington insider. And as it turns out Obama was as much an insider as if he was there for 30 years.
Apperance is everything unfortunately. The difference between most D.C. politicians is razor thin. When election time comes the image makers flourish.
You want to reject Washington? Elect someone with no political experience but tons of experience in business or teaching. We both know that doesn't happen. Unless you are independently wealthy you need a well funded political infrastructure to run for office.

Obama had served in Federal office for less than a year, that the same as serving less than a year, nothing more and nothing less. It takes YEARS to develop the types of contacts that the insiders rely upon and which Americans in general distrust.

Second, the left is using her and framing her as representative of the right. They tried using Rush and that has not worked, so they are using Palin. so to the degree they can make her appear as amateur hour they not only neutralize her they also neutralize the Tea Party and the right.

I sincerely hope she continues to hang out as a "rock star" for conservatives.....raising beaucoup bucks for good candidates. I don't want to see her declare in 2012....but I rejoice in her driving the liberals insane.
Personally, I don't see that on her agenda right now. But that's just me. As a kingmaker, she has the opportunity to be heads and above everyone else. I wish her all the best, and love the fact that she's enjoying blowing up lib heads on a daily basis.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 01:16 ET by matthewdeanYour current spiel about Palin is unusual in that your ferocious demeanor against her written-on-hand crib notes seems to indicate you feel those actions by her represent the most horrific gaffe in political history.

Why have you suddenly started calling other posters names over this Palin scenario?

You do understand
Tue, 02/09/2010 - 01:02 ET by CobraManYou do understand that people will relate more to a "rank amateur' than a "professional, don't you? This is because more people are "rank amateurs" than "professionals." It's only the arrogant amongst us that try use someone else's all-too human tendency to make the the occasional "gaffs" as a weapon in which to strike against an opponent.. Americans' in general, resent that type of arrogance and they will, in large part, support the victims of that arrogance. It didn't work when the Republicans attacked the Democrat's gaffs, and vice-versa, , and it's not going to work when people attack Sarah's gaffs.
Instead of reducing support for Sarah by claiming she's "unprofessional," you're more likely to increase her support as she's then become far more human, and a far less manufactured, packaged image, in the eyes of the public.

If you look at Michael Bloomberg he was a guy with a gazillion dollars to "buy" the Mayor's office and did. But he came in a with a good image that sold (also the Democrats put up scarey candidates). If Bloomberg chose to run a third party in '08 I believe he could have won by throwing the election into the House, and after, contributing to all the Congressmen, would have been elected.

Mon, 02/08/2010 - 13:38 ET by slickwillie2001This is interesting, it tells me that the liberals feel very vulnerable on the 'empty suit needs Teleprompter to tell him what to say' theme, and that we should pound on that theme even more. Republicans should challenge him to do without Teleprompter in his next speech.
It's just not the same thing...
Mon, 02/08/2010 - 14:51 ET by PrairieSkyObama's seeming addiction to his trusty teleprompter, even in front of a bunch of 11 year-olds, is not the same thing as Sarah Palin, or anyone else, using brief notes in a speech or discussion (although I do think that writing them on her hand is a bit odd). I don't begrudge anyone using notes to help keep them on track in such a circumstance, but I think any reasonable person would agree that Obama is chained to his teleprompter...It's just laughable that a man who has been breathlessly lauded by the MSM as being such a great communicator, can't even speak to a group of elementary school kids without his entire speech right in front of him...That's just absurd.
I've seen Sarah Palin give numerous speeches without a prompter or notes (one of them in person during the campaign), so equating her with Obama because of her use of notes on Saturday at the convention, just doesn't hold water.

Obama did fine. He got his talking points out (party of no, nothing new to add, where's you're plan?). I'm guessing he probably scripted them. May have even rehearsed?
You asking me to defend Reps. is going nowhere. I can't. Actually I won't. They have created a new species of invertabrates bipeds. No one in that room had the stones to stand up to him. To let him get away with his tirade is indefensible. Why they invited him to begin with is beyond me. I guess it's the whole "see we're reaching out too" thing, but I don't know what they expected. Again, the assumation that I am on board with Reps. isn't valid. Not sure where you construed that from my post.
To somehow quantify you're statement by tossing out the Fox news thing quite irrelevant. I didn't know they were obligated to cover the entire meeting. I'm not a spokesman for Fox. I don't know why they did it. A few days later he pissed all over MSNBC, they, as well, cut away. Is there something implied by that action? Will Olberman lose his secret decoder ring?

Mon, 02/08/2010 - 17:58 ET by Jonathan GoldwaterWhile writing notes on one's hand is incredibly juvenile and unprofessional, the actual act of doing so didn't bother me. Hey, she had some notes she wanted to remember and she's never heard of index cards…fair enough.
What bothers me is the actual content of her notes. "Energy," "Budget cuts" (crossed out), "Tax," and "Lift Americans Spirits". Really? She needed notes for the 4 things she talks about every time she opens her mouth? That's pretty depressing. I could understand if she was dealing with a complex issue, but these core slogans shouldn't necessitate notes. What's wrong with this woman? Could she really be this dopey? Sadly, the answer continues to come back as a resounding YES.

Mon, 02/08/2010 - 19:30 ET by matthewdeanIt's all your fault.
In your 17:59 ET post, you used the phrase "grace and poise under pressure", which smacked ole Goldwater right between the running lights, cuz JG knows he ain't got it.
Good on ya, mate.
Cheers.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 09:33 ET by Jonathan GoldwaterJWF - You ran away on the thread about Quayle as soon as I showed that you didn't even read your own source, which actually supported me instead of proving me wrong as you so ignorantly claimed. It's ok. Play your games. We both know you scampered when confronted with reality. Again, you have no credibility. You've shown yourself to be nothing more than an emotional, out of control, bully. On the internet nonetheless. Pretty lame for an adult.

Only because the intelligent people on this site are going to tire of your repetitious blather, and just quit replying to your inane chatter.
Off in the distance we will hear a faint voice, saying over and over, "Buehler, Buehler, Buehler", until it quietly fades into infinity.

Palin has more than "notes"
Mon, 02/08/2010 - 21:59 ET by cajun2She has a quick wit and sense of humor. After the media went nuts with "notes in her palm" thing, she knew the media would be watching, so she writes "hi mom" in her palm while in Tcxas the next morning. She knows the meaning of "troll bait". Must visit NB. Hi Sarah!
Good for her!

Sarah had a point or two she thought important enough not to forget.
And was without paper.

Mon, 02/08/2010 - 21:52 ET by CobraManIt's hilarious that so many people claim that Sarah was "sophomoric" by not using index cards as opposed to writing something on the palm of her had. I can just imagine just what those same people would have said if Sarah actually refereed to an index card during a q&a period! They would be just as insulting, just as demeaning to her as they are now.

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 04:26 ET by lawhiteThis whole thing is hilarious! Chris Matthews was freaking out:
"Can a palm reader be president? What do we think of kids in school who write stuff on their hands to get through a test? What do we think of a would-be political leader who does it to look like she`s speaking without notes? What do we think of Sarah Palin this weekend answering pre-screened questions from a like-minded audience in Nashville, a tea party convention, and still having to put a cheat sheet on her palm to answer what she calls the basics of her beliefs?"
And the next night she writes on the palm of her hand to drive the leftists crazy: "Hi, Mom!" No one sees how she is making fun of the libs for their stupid frothing from the mouth, thinking they finally have something "on" her? What a woman!
I have seen many busy people write temporary messages on their palms because they didn't have the time to hunt for a piece of paper. Palin, a busy mom and governor, probably did this often while rushing around, tending and thinking of several things at once. Function takes priority over appearance when you actually have many things to do! It shows a no-nonsense ability to organize her time and get things done.
And there are many, many of us who see nothing at all unusual about this. We laugh at the elites making fools of themselves, getting all bent out of shape and trying to spin it into a major story any way they can. It isn't working...we are amazed watching them We keep laughing at the ignorant media while their ratings drop out of sight because of their transparent and continuing attempts to destroy her while trying to prop up a failing president. They are actually making Sarah even more powerful in the attempt, and they haven't got a clue.

Far too much is being made of an incident which should barely register on the scandalometer. That said, your explanation and justification is a bit of a reach. This wasn't a case of an on-the-go mom hurriedly jotting a grocery list on her hand while busily attending to daily chores. Rather, this was a political celebrity with presidential ambitions delivering important, prearranged--and presumably measured and focused--remarks to a largely sympathetic and national constituency whose support may prove critical to the furtherance of those ambitions. Scribbling palm notes was a tad silly.
