Given the love affair media had with presidential candidate Barack Obama, this is a headline I'm sure few people could have imagined they'd see as the first anniversary of his inauguration approached:
After Year, Hope Turns Into Disappointment
Maybe even more surprising, the contents of this Associated Press piece were just as pessimistic about the man so-called journalists once gushed and fawned over like teenyboppers in the presence of a rock star (h/t Glenn Reynolds):
Forget "can," "change" and, above all, "hope." The new word echoing in the blogosphere and beyond as Obama enters Year Two: disappointment.
The polls have shown a wide decline in Americans' approval of Obama since he first took office last Jan. 20. In fact, according to the latest Gallup Poll, he entered his second year with one of the lowest approval ratings of any president in the last half-century (50 percent of Americans approved of his job performance at the first of January, and 44 percent disapproved.) [...]
[S]ome of the truest Obama believers are among the most letdown.
Consider the anti-war activist upset that Obama has yet to end the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or the socially liberal surgeon disillusioned with what he sees as a weak stab at health care reform. Or Boyd, "50-ish" and out of work a year now, bitter that the man he backed hasn't delivered more jobs.
They speak of disappointment in the state of our union. Disappointment in themselves for expecting so much so fast. Disappointment, especially, in the man who, as Boyd says, "raised the bar so high."
Yes -- this really is an AP piece.
How times have changed.
Is this indicative of the kind of media reports we'll be seeing this week, or is this an outlier?
Stay tuned.

Sun, 01/17/2010 - 21:06 ET by countmein5050Only Those who absolutely refused to listen or consider all the warnings are disappointed. And I don't feel the least bit sorry for them. How stupid do you have to be to think someone so unqualified and unfit would hold up his end of all the promises he made? Seriously...'lawdy lawdy, I help him and he gonna help me...put gas in my car (edging back up to $3 a gallon and still no word on DRILL BABY DRILL HERE), pay my rent (let's see a percentage of people who actually got to keep their homes), and I don't have to worry 'bout nothing...never thought I'd see this day...lawdy lawdy'. And where is this stupid, stupid voter now? On his payroll some where? Or waiting for her check to come in the mail?
To a certain degree this
Sun, 01/17/2010 - 21:16 ET by ReaverTo a certain degree this was inevitable and AP and the rest of the media deserve a share of the blame. They so over hyped Obama during the campaign that even with the best of intentions he had no chance of living up to his hype. On top of that add that Obama clearly did not run with the best of intentions. All that talk about transforming politics and a post partisan era have been shown to be just so much noise. One year in and even his most ardent supporters can see that he embraces all the things he claimed to hate, partisanship, lobbyists, special interests, back room deals, secrecy. On the one hand a certain letdown was inevitable but Obama doubled down on that by showing everyone in fairly short order just what a lying SOB he truly is.

Sun, 01/17/2010 - 21:27 ET by ThisnThatOne year into his presidency, and here's what obama had to say today in Boston:
Over the past year, we've learned that that phrase doesn't bring in new jobs, doesn't make us more secure, doesn't cause congress to reduce spending, and doesn't lower our taxes. The only thing it does is provide us with a reminder that this community organizer is on a permament campaign, and that his past "voting present" record is exactly the same way he governs.

No time to lower our guard
Sun, 01/17/2010 - 22:27 ET by doug1950I think this is more of a CYA piece than an hit piece on Obama. They haven't changed their stripes. All it would take is for him to swerve into doing one thing right and they will be back on message and off and running. No time to let up or forget we have a long way to go.
The thing about "hope" is its always in the future. Liberals love to live by platitudes and slogans. All big puffy white clouds without any rain. We need to take back our country and take back our government. Both Parties suck and have for some time. A third party is not a realistic alternative so conservatives need to take back the GOP.

Disappointment for some...
Sun, 01/17/2010 - 22:47 ET by PrairieSkyVindication for many.
All we have heard for the last 3 years is how wonderful, brilliant and charismatic Obama is...blah, blah, blah. We heard it from his misguided supporters of course, but worse, we heard it from the MSM, unrelentingly. Those of us who opposed Obama for a myriad of reasons, were scorned, insulted, attacked, villified, lied about, and just generally trashed. Well...It seems the worm may finally be turning, as more and more of those who did vote for him, along with, finally, some in the media, may actually have begun to take off their rose-tinted glasses, and are seeing him for what those of us who didn't support him, always knew him to be...An empty suit, manufactured and packaged candidate, who had and has no business being president.

Sun, 01/17/2010 - 23:30 ET by countmein5050I'm sure he's got at least one more, 'Bush's fault' in him, though. However, don't underestimate the vanity in this man. Obama will stoop to what ever level he has to in order to keep that swag. When they can't say one good thing about how he managed the nation, they will still be talking about the brotha's swag...which is what got him elected, actually. So if 'the people' are disappointed now...they need to remember they elected this guy because he had swag....enjoy it...choke on it...and I hope the nasty taste stays with them until they depart this earth or at the very least move to Cuba.
The Media Crybabies
Sun, 01/17/2010 - 23:30 ET by pbthinkerThere are few people that don't realize that Obama wouldn't have been elected without the press. They never vetted him, they never looked into his background, they never questioned his lack of experience, they never sent reporters to look at his college transcripts, they just never.....
Now, after a year, we find out that it takes more to runa country than a community organizer and the words "hope and change". It takes more to run a country than the ability to read a teleprompter and give people a cute smile.
The question now is, will the press try and cover their tracks by actually reporting on Obama and the Democrats? Somehow, I doubt it.

Mon, 01/18/2010 - 00:33 ET by jaywlI heard that Harry Reid called Obama to his office in 2006 to suggest he run for President. I suppose he was intimidated by Hillary. Imagine, Boxer Harry thought she had bigger Kahunas than he! Anyway, If Obama's shortcomings are becoming apparent to his fan club I wonder if any of them have enough gumption themselves to tell the American people how this radical liberal and his allies in the leftist academic cells used blinded idiots to exploit what I fear is mounting weakness in our people. That weakness, that is part ignorance, results from the same destructive program of the Left.

What is a 'socially liberal surgeon'?
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 00:53 ET by TailgunnerYou mean the kind of doctor who spent most of his adult life in medical schools and internships living on black coffee and two and a half hours of sleep a night (maybe)...
...and in the process running up a education debt of maybe a hundred thousand dollars...

I am full of hope
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 01:26 ET by RousseI am full of hope. We who passionately object to Obama's policies, and have firmly and steadily opposed his plans see real progress in our efforts to stop and turn back his destructive administration.
Whatever it is that Obama actually believes, you can believe it doesn't promote America or American ideals. President Clinton once excused the Democrat Party's illegal activities by saying anything they did was ok because the Democrats had to stop the Republican juggernaut.
I don't advocate illegal activities, and Republicans and independents don't NEED illegal measures to beat the Democrats. We do have to fight for our very lives though, and never forget that the price of freedom is very high indeed. And freedom, once lost, is almost impossible to regain.
Responsibility
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 01:43 ET by JohnKTo fail to exercise proper analysis and judgement in so important a task as electing the President of the United States, and ignoring all the warning signs (any one of which would have doomed a Republican candidate) in favor of being mesmerised by pretty words and promises is not simply naive and immature, it is profoundly irresponsible. If only the ones who committed this atrocity were to be affected, I could laugh it off, but, as it is immediately affecting us all and will continue to affect our children and grandchildren into the distant future, I have nothing but the most profound anger at the willful fools who elected Obama.

Mon, 01/18/2010 - 02:26 ET by Rush Fanearthquake disaster, and the people of Haiti are still suffering. FoxNews reporter Jonathan Hunt reported today on an orphanage he had located where the orphans had been left with no food or water, and have not seen anyone from the U.S. or the U.N since the earthquake.
President Bush was criticized enormously for the government's response to Hurricane Katrina and for his lack of leadership.
Where is the criticism and disappointment in President Obama's leadership in his response to the Haiti earthquake disaster? Where is Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera when we need them?
I’m speculating, but I believe that the reason for this delay in helping the Haitian people is that President Obama doesn’t care about Black people?

Mon, 01/18/2010 - 11:33 ET by EddieWalkerWhen it became a race between McCain and Obama, I realized that we'd have to get Obama in office to really make any change to the way out government is run. McCain would have done just like he always has and pander to the Dems. Polosi would control him and he'd end up taking the blame for everything she did. It happened to President Bush in 2006, and McCain isn't half the man Bush is. With Obama as president, Polosi is still in charge of the country and able to push her agenda. Obama is just a child compared to her, and unable to stand up to her. Polosi is the one running the country, and thankfully with a Dem as president, they have to take responsiblity for what they are doing. I realize they are still trying to blame President Bush for all their failures, but that's just making them look foolish. Obama is the best thing that could have happened to our country at this time. We have a cancer in Washington and until recently, nobody was willing to realize how bad it was. Now it's coming to light that ther is a problem, and playing nice to the Libs is not the way to go. What is truly shocking is how quickly America has noticed this and how many people now realize that the real problem is with the Libs and big governement. It's too early to tell, but Obama sure looks like a lame duck, Reid is out of office and I'm really hoping that Polosi feels the backlash too. Loss of the Speakership for sure, hopefully a serious challenger for her office steps up to challenge her in SF.

I remember at Monticello
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 15:15 ET by StarAZI went to Monticello a few times and remember that in the "breakfast nook," there were full-scale busts of Madison and I think Washington, can't remember exactly. I guess these guys made busts of themselves and and handed them around...photography not having appeared yet. My pt is even the founding dads had their peculiarities and egos. Only through the goggles of history are these things swept away--I am sure there are other examples, too...Didn't Jefferson start a paper just to laud himself--or shut one down that didn't? I am so good on history, but you get where I am going.
StarAZ
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 16:17 ET by AgnosticThe response to every point made within your post is yes and no. I'm not sure about the busts but there are at least half a dozen other scenarios that would explain the busts. Plus remember they, as Obama is today, belong to the public and as the media make Obama's ego look even bigger by their constant gushing - I'm sure it was the same back then.
Jefferson had more than one purpose than to laud himself and one should be impressed by the fact that he was able to start a paper for himself to get his ideas out and to defend himself against attacks he thought were unfair - Adams and Jefferson did not exactly coexist in harmony.
Read the letters these people wrote to eachothers and to their families and if you should be truly impressed by their character. Did they have faults? By the truck loads but they were also visionaries in a world of the ruled and the aristocracy.

food for conservatism
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 13:25 ET by ron from TexasI wish to elaborate on a sentiment expressed a few posts ago. I too think that, in so many words, Obama, with Pelosi and Reid, is the best thing to happen to conservatism in a long time. The republicans made a mistake nominating McCain and, in so doing, lost the election. This is partly due to conceding to much to the far left during the Bush years. By failing to uphold fiscal and political conservative strongpoints (if they can just keep their religion out of it, too), they left independents without much to vote for. Along comes the trainwreck of the Obama admin, which serves as a wake-up call. That is, sometimes, the best way to show the faults of the far left dems is for them to get in power, once in a while. But therein lies the inherent danger of what they can accomplish while in power.
Good catch, or getting off-course?
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 15:51 ET by sanderson13While I count on this site to do its stated job, to be fair I'm not sure how this particular piece serves in, “Exposing & Combating Liberal Media Bias.”
On the other hand, I was really happy to have that AP piece brought to my attention. ;-)
Re Purpose
Mon, 01/18/2010 - 18:01 ET by slickwillie2001The way I see it, an important part of pointing out liberal bias is to note when there are exceptions to that bias. In doing so the website also highlights the fact that such exceptions are rare, and it gives the exceptional author the media attention (and hits) that they all crave, even from NB.
All writers want their fifteen minutes of fame, and if it appears that someone at a liberal outlet can get it by doing some honest journalism or opinion for a change, others might follow.
