AP: Tiger Woods Is Racist - He Only Cheats With White Women

Associated Press headline:

Tiger’s Troubles Widen His Distance From Blacks

‘Two layers of suspicion ... one is the pattern in the race of his partners’

The article that followed labeled the golfer racist not only for "declin[ing] to identify himself as black," but also because of "the race of the women" he's involved with.

On top of this, the AP made the case that America's fascination with Woods's philandering is only because he's cheating with white women (h/t NB reader Matthew Noll):

Amid all the headlines generated by Tiger Woods' troubles — the puzzling car accident, the suggestions of marital turmoil and multiple mistresses — little attention has been given to the race of the women linked with the world's greatest golfer.
Except in the black community.
When three white women were said to be romantically involved with Woods in addition to his blonde, Swedish wife, blogs, airwaves and barbershops started humming, and Woods' already tenuous standing among many blacks took a beating.

The article continued with this theme:

As one blogger, Robert Paul Reyes, wrote: "If Tiger Woods had cheated on his gorgeous white wife with black women, the golfing great's accident would have been barely a blip in the blogosphere."

Wow! So America is also racist because we're only interested in this story due to the color of Woods's mistresses.

But it gets worse:

The darts reflect blacks' resistance to interracial romance. They also are a reflection of discomfort with a man who has smashed barriers in one of America's whitest sports and assumed the mantle of the world's most famous athlete, once worn by Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan.
But Woods has declined to identify himself as black, and famously chose the term "Cablinasian" (Caucasian, black, Indian and Asian) to describe the racial mixture he inherited from his African-American father and Thai mother.

So Woods is wrong for not considering himself black even though he is one quarter Chinese, one quarter Thai, one quarter African-American, one eighth American Indian, and one eighth Dutch?

But there was yet more racial absurdity in this piece:

This vexed some blacks, but it hasn't stopped them from claiming Woods as one of their own. Or from disapproving of his marriage to Elin Nordegren, despite blacks' historical fight against white racist opponents of mixed marriage.

So, blacks have historically fought against "white racist opponents of mixed marriage":

"But at the same time we still see him as a black man with a white woman, and it makes a difference," said Johnson Cooper, a 26-year-old African-American from New York City. "There's just this preservation thing we have among one another. We like to see each other with each other."

Wow! So, on the one hand, blacks have fought against "white racist opponents of mixed marriage." BUT, they're against black men marrying white women.

Not only did the AP miss this hypocrisy, it actually defended it:

This tendency may be more prominent due to a relative lack of interracial marriages among average blacks. Although a recent Pew poll showed that 94 percent of blacks say it's all right for blacks and whites to date, a study published this year in Sociological Quarterly showed that blacks are less likely to actually date outside their race than are other groups.
"There is a call for loyalty that is stronger in some ways than in other racial communities," said the author of the study, George Yancey, a sociology professor at the University of North Texas and author of the book "Just Don't Marry One."
The color of one's companion has long been a major measure of "blackness" — which is a big reason why the biracial Barack Obama was able to fend off early questions about his black authenticity.
"Had Barack had a white wife, I would have thought twice about voting for him," Johnson Cooper said.
So do Woods' women say something about the intensely private golfer's views on race?
"I would like to say no, but I think it garners a bit of a yes," Johnson Cooper said.

Wow!

So if Michelle Obama was white, blacks wouldn't have voted for her husband?

Somehow the AP missed this racist hypocrisy as well.

Add it all up, and Woods is racist for cheating with white women, Americans are racist because they wouldn't be interested in this story if his mistresses were black, and it's okay for blacks to resent black men that are involved with white women.

Yep, that skit comes to mind, funny stuff, does this mean that the "Black Delegation" is releasing Tiger on wavers, might be a big pickup for the "Asian Delegation".

Several years ago a study on bi-racial couples (among whites (I think including Hispanic, like in crime stats), blacks, and asians) determined that the vast majority were between White Men-Asian Women and Black Men-White Women, leaving Black Women and Asian Men out on either end. Several interesting (though possibly surprising to many) reasons became apparent throught the stats and a couple of followup studies. Neverthless, generally black women are especially angry at black men who marry white women, though I'm sure its a fairly universal tendency.

It's always selective. They're telling Woods he's not 'black enough,' to which Woods probably doesn't care.

Take Clarence Thomas. The civil rights industry despises Thomas because he is not another Thurgood Marshall. Mrs. Thomas happens to be white. Together, these two facts stand as testament to his "trying to be white" according to his enemies.

On the other hand, civil rights and NAACP gauleiter Julian Bond is married to a white woman. But he's cool because he's always calling white Americans racist.

Quincy Jones was married to white actress Peggy Lipton. But Jones was too hip to be scorned as "trying to be white."

Basketball star Charles Barkley is (was?) married to a white woman. Has he been accused of not being black enough?

OJ Simpson was accused of not being black enough when he divorced his black wife and married a white woman. It wasn't until he killed her that some black Americans could find empathy for Simpson. Then, many spoke of his 'redemption,' and they weren't referring to the crime of murder. They were talking about returning to black community by exhibiting remores for not having been black enough.

And finally, the late Richard Pryor married a white woman. Does anyone bring that up when they speak of his 'blackness' and influence on black stand-up comedians? No, because he was too hip. Hell, he could even use the word nigger on stage because he was hip, man.

Actually, Tiger's preference toward white women, if he actually has one, is a compliment to the the white race. He embraces the aesthetic of the dominant culture, as have many successful black men. Having said that, Tiger is not black. His father was African-American, but as has been pointed out, Tiger's DNA is from all over the world. Nothing wrong with that, except that black racists want to claim him as their own because he's successful. Let him start losing, and the black racists will be telling everyone that tiger never was "really black".

has personal preferences. From what I am sensing from reading all around this hoopla is they are offended because he didn't have any black women in his harem. He seems to prefer waitresses as well. I am sure a head shrinker could have a field day with all of this but frankly I lost interest about 10 seconds after the first announcement. If Tiger was the guy next door who worked at a regualar job no one would give this a second thought, but because he is a famous sports figure he gets this nonstop coverage. This goes to the heart of our nations' infatuation with atheletes, hollywood boneheads and celebrities. Just because a man can whack a small white ball 300 yards should not make him or anyone a "hero" or someone to model yourself after. Wealth and smarts do not necesarily go together.

One final thought: That had to the be the shortest "drive" of his entire career.

When I first read this article about Tiger Woods earlier this morning, I had the same thought process as to how "75 years ago in the South, etc., etc.". But I stopped myself and thought, exactly how do I really know that it was actually like that in the South 75 years ago?

My stereotyping of the South is a learned thing, mostly from pop-culture, and mainly from the movies. Movies like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "In the Heat of the Night" are classic "learning experiences" of how it was in the South.

Now I'm not naive, and I'm not saying there were not lynchings in the old South. But we all know that it wasn't litterally a capital offense for a black man to look at a while woman. I grew up in the North, went to college and worked there before moving to Arkansas in 1986. The North was just as segregated as the South and racism was just as prevelant, in my experience, in the North as it is in the South.

I don't think the Hollywood of the 1990s and onward has any monopoly on propagandizing and prostelising as compared to the Hollywood of the 1960s, so I'm going to try and temper my learned knowledge of the past to what I actually know and not what I learned from the pop-culture. Maybe, CO2Maker, your a 90 year old guy who grew up in Mississippi and has first hand knowledge of some laws that dictated hanging for a black man to look at a white woman. But I know that in today's world, I wouldn't want to take my chances, as a white man, of going into South Central L.A. and learing at a gang member's girlfriend.

but I'm not 90 years old. There are many stories about how black men were attacked for looking at white women in the wrong way. The infamous story of the Scottsboro Boys, nine young black men who were charges with raping two white women on a freight train in Alabama, is perhaps the most famous example. Lynchings took place until the late 20s and early 30s, and in the South, sadly, many victims were black men killed by white Klansmen and sympathizers for various offenses.

Injustice against blacks occured all over the United States, not just the South. Blacks got attacked for looking the wrong way at both men and women, and they probably still do. Whites get attacked for looking at blacks the wrong way. The historic lynching of blacks is not restricted to the South, and the history of the Ku Klux Klan is not restricted to the South.

My biggest peave with your original post was the use of the word "litterally". But there is still too much stereotyping of "The South" that is done, even among conservatives in these forums. It's popular among liberals to stereotype the South because of the conservative politics here, and that's one reason I try and interject whenever I see it.

In point of fact, there were Jim Crow laws, mostly in the southern states as a result of the effects of Reconstruction and the perceived rampant misbehavior of Scalawags and Carpetbaggers.

Furthermore, there were anti-miscegenation laws in all the states from the colonial period that forbade interracial marriages and sexual behavior, specifically between "people of African descent" and other not of African descent, and these laws remained on the books in many places well into mid-century.

As I said, I am a Southerner, born in North Carolina. My parents were bi-lateral: my mother was a Catholic from Pennsylvania and my father a Southern Baptist from N.C., and I saw the racial animus in my mother's working-class family of steel workers, truckers, and construction workers. My father's family, curiously, displayed the genteel manners of the lower middle-class Southerners. I never heard any of my uncles or aunts say anything derogatory about black people. In fact, I actually heard my grandmother say that "some of her friends were Negro," but they came to her back door all the same.

Again, I think you are over generalizing here. Black men looking in a learing manner at white women probably caused just as much offense in the North as it did in the South as it did in California, if someone wanted to take offense to such action.

And yes, the segregation in the South up intil the 1960s was codified, as opposed to the institutionalized and generally accepted segregation in the North. My public grade school in a suburb of Chicago was 100% white, in a town that was probably 25% black, up intil the mid 1960s.

why do the pundits try to rationalize Tiger's cheating escapades as being power-related? it's like with Clinton/Sanford et al. Why can't it be simply biological? it's a well known fact that men's sex drives last until death, but women's sex drives fall with age and after child birth (generally speaking). now, don't get it twisted, i am not condoning his horrendous behavior. it's quite reprehensible, but in all honesty, with power/money comes women... it takes a very strong, well centered man to withstand his biological urges when women throw themselves at his feet. am i right? by the way, where are all the women outraged by these mistresses' actions? anyways, let the man get his own life in order and leave him alone. he has alot of atonement to do.

We all need to keep in mind that Tiger Woods is ONLY in his early 30's. And the father who led him through his young life is dead. So let's see, a very young guy who is very rich, very famous, very talented (in a rather narrow sphere) and good-looking is led into temptation by groupies who throw themselves at young, rich, famous men.

I think because Tiger became rich and famous at a very young age, so he's been around for a while, we feel like he's older and more mature than he is. Let's leave the guy and his wife alone now. Let them work things out however they will.

As for the black people (read WOMEN) complaining that Tiger is a racist for associating with white women, let's remember that they are just jealous because they wouldn't stand a chance with this guy. I work with a lot of black women who complain constantly because there is such a shortage of intelligent, successful black men for them to date and marry. Most of the black men they come in contact with are either "playahs" who just jump from woman to woman leaving a trail of little illegitimate black babies in their wake, or they are dating white woman. The rest of the young black men are in jail.
