NBC's "Saturday Night Live" really went after President Obama in its opening sketch Saturday evening.
Not only that, his policies involving economic stimulus, healthcare reform, and Cash for Clunkers were also exposed as having absolutely no positive or future impact on unemployment.
The setup was Obama, played by Fred Armisen, doing a press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, played by Bill Hader.
As Jintao, through interpreter played by Nasim Pedrad, realized how much money the United States owes China, he questioned how we were going to pay them back if Obama's policies "to save money involve spending even more money."
Realizing he's being lied to, Jintao asked Obama to kiss him - "I like to be kissed when someone is doing sex to me!" (video embedded below the fold courtesy Story Balloon):
Nice bit, but the Chinese President continuously bending over was a bit overdone.
That said, it is nice to see the folks at "SNL" continuing to bash the man NBC helped become President.
Exit question: Will CNN and other so-called news outlets fact-check this skit?

Re SNL
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 11:57 ET by slickwillie2001Meh. They properly poked the Bamster on being in hock to China, but as usual Armisen was weak. He simply refuses to make any attempt to mimic the Bamster, basically just reading his lines. I guess he figures he's on a four-year easy street, at minimum.
Nothing else worth reporting on. With so much in the news the last few weeks that is obvious comedy material, their negligence is typical.

Yeah, so AS USUAL, the underlying message is positive for democrats. The message to people watching is they're "being smart, screwing the Chinese for America".
If that's "bashing", then I wish they'd bash Republicans like that.
It's BULL. Democrats are screwing America into the HOLE. There is nothing smart going on AT ALL.

Very FUnnie SNL Bit
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:29 ET by P.J. GladnickI disagree. This SNL bit had me in stitches. Cracked me up bigtime. Also I am wondering if the REAL Chinese president will be seeing this. Okay, he probably won't think it is so funny but he will most likely think it has a lot of truth. Bamster Bucks that will be used to pay the debt owed to the Chinese is becoming worth less and less.
So you're pushing the same
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:57 ET by notonmywatchSo you're pushing the same pro-democrat stuff that snl was pushing.
People who believe that are idiots. Democrats are dumping trillions of dollars of debt onto America's kids, giving it to political pals, & here we see them scamming people into thinking it's a smart thing to do.
Now THAT's effective communication.

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:02 ET by P.J. GladnickHuh? What "pro-democrat stuff?" This SNL skit made fun of Obama's lame excuses about improving the economy. Did you even watch the skit? The admission by "Obama" in this skit that the stimulus package created NO new jobs was somehow "pro-democrat?"

It doesn't all have to be pro-dem for there to be an underlying pro-dem message.
Republicans are attacked as nasty, & demonized. When democrats are "bashed", they're well-meaning, and hints of smart moves to screw the Chinese.
And virtually no one points out those real facts, even to the point of thinking they're being fair. Like I said. Highly effective communications.

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:26 ET by P.J. GladnickBetter tell the left how "pro-democrat" the SNL skit is because I just checked and the Daily Kos and Democrat Underground are both ticked off by this skit bigtime.
And I am still laughing over it.

Obama Opinion
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:41 ET by P.J. GladnickSomehow I don't think Obama would enjoy watching this video with Michelle. However, I would ENJOY watching Obama's reaction if someone in the press asked him if he saw it. Trust me. This is a skit that Obama (and the democrats) would hate if they see it.

Whether they are smart or not isn't the point . . .
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:51 ET by Galvanic. . . The point is that they reflect the sentiment of the vocal Left at any given moment, and this skit was a kick in the teeth, probably not because it isn't true, but because it ridicules their socialist Dear Leader (I mean our President, not the Commie).
But we shouldn't be
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 14:01 ET by notonmywatchBut we shouldn't be interested in what some leftards think.
We see this every time. It's Stockholm Syndrome. Ordinary conservative Joe Public is the hostage & the media is his captor. They make the SLIGHTEST joke about dems, while leaving them looking well-intentioned (compared to the usual hate-filled attacks on republicans) and the hostages go weak-kneed, so happy for this "glass of water" from their captor. They start to empathize with the captor, starting to imagine the captor's point of view.
Public opinion is WAY past what this skit did, so they HAVE to go to 30% of what the public opinion actually is, to APPEAR like comedians, rather than propagandists. It's an iterative game of polling, and not tripping peoples' wire.

Good grief...it was a funny
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 14:34 ET by balboaGood grief...it was a funny skit. Get over yourself.
A broken clock is right twice a day
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 13:35 ET by Fred2Yes, SNL is run by hardcore liberals who prefer bashing conservatives while ignoring the sins of their Left wing politicians. Yet, I will give credit to SNL when to level truth-based criticism at Obama. Big Hollywood said it better than I can:
http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/bighollywood/2009/11/22/shock-snl-take...
So, I laughed at this video without shame because of its honesty about the Obama's half-witted policies.
????
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 14:48 ET by GalvanicIt's all about what the Left thinks, and right now, they think he's in trouble politically. Democratic Congressmen from moderate-conservative districts are worried.
After the 2008 elections, the Democratic Party was thinking that Obama had led them to the prmised land, and that somehow, conservatism is dead. In their hubris, they flaunted their victory with obituaries for conservatism, redefinitions of the GOP as a regional party of the Deep South, and declarations like the magazine cover problaiming "We Are All Socialists Now."
But the American people haven't been fooled. They took a huge gamble on Obama's promises about "Change We Can Believe In;" that he was going to fundamentally change the way Washington works and make government function. Events since January 20th have proven that Obama's Audicity of Hope is the Audacity of False Hope. Independents are turning on him in droves despite liberal control of the MSM and Hollywood. The Republican victories in New Jersey and Virginia show that the GOP is far from dead, and actually resurging.
That's why the SNL skits are important. The Left is now shooting holes through Obama's own claims of progress, and some have been blaming him for their political downturn.
Joe Public -- if he even watches SNL -- saw a skit that reflects this dissaffection with Obama's budget-busting policies and failure to deliver. SNL didn't even throw in a gratuitous reference to "inheriting the Bush economy," which is the usual alibi of the Democrats and their ilk.
As you noted, public opinion is way past what the skit did. SNL isn't trying to sway public opinion at this point; it's reading the opinion polls and going with the flow. If they want to continueto sell beer, Viagra, and cars, they need to appeal to the public's mood. They'll never be as disenchanted with Obama as the public is, but as a venue for political satire, they've at least taken Obama off the 'untouchable' list.
And that's signficant.
(I mean our President, not the Commie).

I saw this early this morning, and I took it the same way as you do...you're not alone...at all.
I understand both sides of this, I've read all the posts so far, so it really is how we all see things politically with their underlying agenda/ propaganda....comedy or not...it's all thru our own View-finders in life.
The majority of the left are too dense to understand how people like me and nomw see it....and I'm thankful for that.
After-all, as PJ said, at Dkos and elsewhere, they aren't happy campers....and that does make me smile, no matter how that is achieved.
Just wait until 'O' trys to straddle the fence with his 'Decision' regarding McChrystal's request for troops.

Agreed, P J
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 14:25 ET by GalvanicThere was nothing pro-Obama in this skit. He comes off as a liar.
While the over-the-top sexual references were unnecessary (What won't SNL do to get a few laughs?), there were more subtle messages in it, whether SNL intended them or not.
For instance, "Obama" sounds like the typical liberal who criticizes his benefactor while holding his hand out for more money. In essence, he sounds like a Democrat or better yet, an ACORN operative.
Also, his repeated replies of "You're going to get your money," sound like the tenant's reflexive line to his landlord when the rent is well overdue. One could picture Eddie Murphy's tenement-dwelling "Mr. Robinson" uttering the same line to his angry landlord.
There was nothing positive in this skit for the Democrats, and they know it.
Clunkers is Sofa King Wetarded
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 17:34 ET by mikedudicalI've always had a problem with Cash4Clunkers. To me it seems to go against simple supply and demand economics. How can we push all of these new cars into a market already saturated with used and repossessed vehicles (see www.repofinder.com)? Now new cars are worth even less, we have more Amerians in debt, and eventually more repossessions.

No, but the Palin book signing parody
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:33 ET by legacyrepublicanNo, but the Palin book signing parody SNL does next week will inspire a week long CNN prime time show with a hand picked, I mean random, audience who are really hand picked, but who will cry tears and wail over the 'dangerous' direction Palin is leading the country with her book signing.
The 'call-in' part is too Glen Beck or Rush. ;]
Armisen's Obama
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:10 ET by BlondeIs getting better (at least in the first part of the video). He's beginning to bring some of the Obama ticks into his portrayal, the odd, choppy way of speaking, with the raising and lowering of pitch at the end of his sentences. Also the tennis match head swivel. Now he needs to ratchet it up about ten times to really make it work.
The interpreter was great.
Well, we'll just have to hope SNL keeps the pedal to the medal. This might eventually be funny.
I hope he fails, too.
Blonde
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:58 ET by DoktorFrankenThat's kinda what I thought, too. I got the link of this video on Lucianne.com and after watching it I left this comment on NBC:
At least they are getting closer. Fred Armisen, who CAN do a good impression of the Idiot in Chief but seems to be loath to do an accurate one as to not display how stupid he actually is, does portray the 'real' Hussein a bit better. Amazing that Hussein did not apologize for America creating the Fortune Cookie.

The SNL barometer . . .
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 12:17 ET by GalvanicThis is certainly not the first Obama satire the SNL has performed, but perhaps with an application of trend analysis, we can use the frequency and severity of the parodies as one more tool with which to measure Obama's political strength and popularity.
Why?
SNL is produced, written, and performed by staunch liberals. In the first months of this Administration, they laid off biting satire of Obama's performance and policies because they were still in awe of the so-called 'rock star." Theskits tended to poke fun at the over-the-top infatuation with the President.
But TV is all about ratings, and SNL knows that if it's going to sustain and increase its audience, its political satire is going to have to be topical and sting. As the independents grow increasingly disenchanted with Obama, watch for the nasty SNL skits to increase in frequency.
The Obama-ite are relying on strong, enthusiastic support from the same demographic that make up most of SNL's audience. If SNL's rating improve when they increase Obama-slamma skits, it's bad news for them.

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 13:50 ET by rolling_oThe whole bit is based on the premise that it is wrong for Obama to lecture China on financial matters when they are loaning so much money to the US.
In this sketch, "Hu" (that's his family's name, not Jintao) knows he's being screwed from word one, but he's playing dumb before "turning on" the sarcasm.
Sure, Armisen's impression needs a lot of work, but this sketch was all about his policies.

Good question
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 14:57 ET by GalvanicThe producers and screenwriters at SNL may want to keep pressing, but they ultimately have to kowtow to the mandarins at NBC, and their masters at GE. GE wants cap-and-trade legislation to pass in order to capitalize on green products, and thus has too much at stake to let NBC fall into disfavor with the White House. So, there's a strong risk that SNL will get censored from the top.
Now THAT would make a good press scandel
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 22:58 ET by timrfrench61Could you just see Lorne Michaels coming on The Factor and saying he had a conversation like that? And what happens when Rupurt Murdoch buys NBC???

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 18:36 ET by legacyrepublicanI got to thinking a little bit ago. The shoe is on the other foot now.
I don't like the taudry Teabagger sexual reference one bit. It offends me because it trivializes my viewpoint.
Shouldn't I feel the same way about this sketch too? Should I revel in the sexual humor at the expense of discussing the core issues?
I mean, I dislike what the guy is doing, but to enjoy it being put in sexual terms places me at the same level as Chris Matthews and other of his kind.
Or does it? Any thoughts on whether I would be hypocritical in laughing at the sexual jokes while complaining about the sexual humor used against me as a Tea Party participant.

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 18:41 ET by bigtimerlr....
That's why I understood and agreed with nomw's way of seeing things regarding all of this.

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 18:43 ET by evilcontractorMaybe I'm missing something, but this doesn't appear very pro-democrat to me. They're really protraying obama as a clueless idiot (not far from the truth in my opinion). The message not pro-Obama
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 07:51 ET by humanzeeThe message is not pro-Obama and the skit doesn't present him as smart, either.
It portrays Obama as a bold faced LIAR.
The message can be summed up as, "STOP F***ING WITH US!"
They couldn't use the F-word, so they used the word sex but it is F*** they meant. Thus skit veils domestic criticism of the president using an event from Obama's foreign policy tour.
Obama is pushing his luck. He's full of BS and even the liberals are getting miffed. Obama is insulting the intelligence of the people who put him in office by not coming clean. He assures people of things that logically don't make sense. In essence, his lying is becoming so transparent and shameless, it's putting people off.
