New Ox-Am Dictionary Names 'Teabagger' Word of the Year Finalist

The New Oxford American Dictionary on Monday named its 2009 "Word of the Year," and listed as one of the finalists "teabagger."

Fortunately, its definition was different than the sexual connotation many media members and liberal bloggers conveyed by using the term.

Regardless, its inclusion is still quite offensive to millions of Americans.

I guess the good folks at NOAD weren't concerned with that when they wrote the following press release:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Facebook fans will undoubtedly recognize the New Oxford American Dictionary's 2009 Word of the Year, unfriend.

unfriend - verb - To remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook

"It has both currency and potential longevity," notes Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford's US dictionary program. "In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year. Most 'un-' prefixed words are adjectives (unacceptable, unpleasant), and there are certainly some familiar 'un-' verbs (uncap, unpack), but 'unfriend' is different from the norm. It assumes a verb sense of 'friend' that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!). Unfriend has real lex-appeal." [...]

Word of the Year Finalists: [...]

Politics and Current Affairs

  • Ardi -(Ardipithecus ramidus) oldest known hominid, discovered in Ethiopia during the 1990s and announced to the public in 2009
  • birther - a conspiracy theorist who challenges President Obama's US birth certificate
  • choice mom - a person who chooses to be a single mother
  • death panel - a theoretical body that determines which patients deserve to live, when care is rationed
  • teabagger - a person who protests President Obama's tax policies and stimulus package, often through local demonstrations known as "Tea Party" protests (in allusion to the Boston Tea Party of 1773
It really is a different America, isn't it?

Your best work of the day, NS

(Drudge should link to all of your posts).

Personally, I like "Ardi" and "Death Panel".

Perhaps we should flood their site with our objection to "teabagger"....and cite part and parcel of exactly WHY?

I hope he fails, too.

Too bad, 'cause I was rooting for "Obamateurism"

Other good ones would have been Obamanation, Obamunism, ObamaCare, Obamaganda, and my personal favorite, goober-cheese.

EDIT: Oops, I left out royally screwed, too, as in what we as a nation are.

Our elected representatives have failed us.

Well then obviously this means...

That Corzine in NJ and Deeds in VA were teabagged, right?

Throw 'da bums out!!!

Obama will be tea bagged in 2012

God help you if you try to be civil and give and FYI about grammar or spelling on this site...the backlash could kill you

let's give it up

someone on Fox said that maybe we need to just give in and accept "teabagger" proudly. if you think about it, many groups' names started as pejoratives. (ok all I can think of right now is the art movement "Fauvism," where fauve means "wild beasts" in French, which was appropriated by the artists, but I'm sure there are other examples.)

what if we did that? it would take all the fun out of the loony left calling us "teabaggers," don't you think? who cares what they think, anyway? the Obama contingent are so far away from reality it hardly matters.

No way, Jose!

The etymology of Teabagger is patently disingenuous.  Where does “bagger” come in?  It most certainly does not come in from “The Boston Tea Party.”  And all of the – what is another word for ‘jerks’ that is nastier? – that might use this term know that, and also know the actual etymology of Teabagger.

I trust this dictionary includes the verb “nosepicking,” complete with a detailed description of how it is done.  That is much less offensive.

- Relying upon the Liberal Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler for your portfolio management.

- I didn't leave the Republican Party; the Republican Party left me.

Where does “bagger”

Where does “bagger” come in?

It comes from reteaparty.com. The article ( at reteaparty.com) suggesting people send tea bags to representatives in Washington D.C. was headlined with "Tea bag the fools in D.C."  Hence the protesters were labeled "tea-baggers."

Did Chad Peace know of the more disgusting meaning of that term before posting that headline? Who knows, because no one, including NewsBusters  or Fox News, has ever asked him. But he did start term. Was it meant to create controversy? Perhaps Fox News or NewsBusters should ask him.

This is one of nwahs 20 verifiable lies at newsbusters.

8. nwahs claims tea party attendees first referred to themselves as teabaggers. nwahs: Fact is the first people to use the term were tea party attendees.

Truth: The Huffington Post first used it on 9 April as a derogatory term and MSNBC's started using it around 11 April.

Source: nwahs imaginary backward friend toidi.

Black culture has called each other the N word for decades. Is it acceptable for the rest of us?

The term "Democrat TurdforBrain" has been floating around the internet for 13 years. Is this now acceptable?

nwahs referred to himself as a prissy whiney lying yellow-stain cowardly retard 18 months ago. Is it acceptable to call him a prissy whiney lying yellow-stain cowardly retard?

There are 18,547 web sites dedicated to tea party protests and tea party groups. Just because one website used the term as a verb and naively not realizing the double intendre, this does not give nwahs the right to come here and lie, lie, lie & lie.

No its not ok

October 2, 2009 - 14:34 ET by nwahs

... This is a loaded question as it ignors the fact that the use of "tea bag" as an act of sending tea bags to Washington was first used on a Tea Party web site (reteaparty.com).

Oh do shut up idiot. No one is buying your lies no matter how many times you repeat them.

No he keeps playing it because of the term

October 17, 2009 - 10:02 ET by nwahs

When I defended the innocent use of "tea bagger" stating Chad Peace of reteaparty.com had instigated the term with the headline "tea bag the  fools in DC...

Like clockwork, we have to hear about nwahs and his fascination with one of the 18,000 websites. See you in 2 weeks Jer/nwahs.

If you would stop blathering long enough to read

Truth: The Huffington Post first used it on 9 April as a derogatory term and MSNBC's started using it around 11 April.

The link I posted where the term tea bagging ( "Tea bag  the fools in D.C.)  began, is from February 21.

Appears here on March 30:

Here's a photo of a tea partier using the term in a sign

and another

My contention:

Fact is the first people to use the term were tea party attendees.

Is a fact.

Since then, I've agreed ( in a post to Cool Arrow) that no matter who started using the term, people shouldn't continue using it if its offensive. Its a lot like the case of the "Magic Negro." It doesn't matter if a leftist writer used the term, there's no excuse to keep using it if black people find it offensive. If a Native American calls himself asn "Injun" it doesn't validate the word or make it less offensive. The same applies to "teabagger."

That's the fact of the matter. But please continue to pound away on the drama.

The interesting thing, and why I even bothered to respond to this particular blather, is the degree of hypocrisy it would require to understand why using "teabagger" is wrong no matter who adopted it, but not seeing why "The Magic Negro" is wrong. It would take much hypocrisy to resolve that.

Perhaps someone can explain why its any different?

nwahs lies in an attempt to cover his previous lies.

nwahs lies so often he forgets when and where he has lied before.

NewsBusters: Special Report: nwahs Character Assassination Campaign Against Rush Limbaugh

Distortions of Limbaugh’s Quotes: “nwahs” posts have often deliberately twisted Limbaugh’s words in TV interviews and radio routines beyond recognition. Limbaugh’s declaration that he wanted President Obama’s liberal policies to fail was presented as Limbaugh wanting the nation to fail. He mangled Limbaugh’s politically incorrect parodies, like the song “Barack the Magic Negro,” in which an Al Sharpton impersonator sings about how Barack Obama isn't an authentic black. It didn’t matter than the parody was based on a black film critic’s Los Angeles Times article titled “Obama the Magic Negro.” Some journalists even compared Limbaugh to Sister Souljah, a rapper who suggested after the Los Angeles riots in 1992 that the country needed “a week to kill white people.”

Tampering with quoted

Tampering with quoted material to make it appear it averred something which it in fact did not.

That is serious intellectual dishonesty, JWF.  You are distorting and misusing direct quotations published by the staff of NewsBusters.

I would suggest a retraction.

Jer

Sniff Sniff. I am Jer. I strike out when I get caught.

I threaten others with blackmail when I get caught with my own intellectual dishonesty.

Last time I checked, parody and humor are ok. Now I have to explain humor to the guy with a stick up his butt that has it's own stick up it's butt.

Let's see what we have here.

We have one guy that lies and distorts what Rush Limbaugh says on a near daily basis.

We have me slightly modifying a paragraph from an article about the media's lies and distortions to make it look like they were talking about Rush Limbaugh and LINKING TO THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE. Notice nwahs remarks on magic negro. Then notice the original article's remarks on magic negro. This was a near perfect refutation of nwahs, and humor and parody are perfectly acceptable in any world except blackmailers.

Then we have the third guy that distorts the same quote from Rush Limbaugh year after year coming in and accusing me of some kind of intentional variant of plagiarism. So intent is he on getting me to admit to some kind of wrong, he brings it up in another thread.

I want Jer the blackmailer to tell us all right now why he thinks blackmail is ok. And if he believes I did some kind of insufferable harm, why he did not simply report me.

I'm not blackmailing you,

I'm not blackmailing you, JWF.  In fact, falsely calling me a blackmailer is not only intellectually dishonest, but it's defamatory to boot.

I recommended you correct your inappropriate activity.  I'm not reporting you whether you do so or not.  The staff can do what they wish--which may be absolutely nothing.

Are you making the assertion that Conservatives routinely call people disparaging names, then hide behind claims of excessive political correctness? If so, what are your examples?

You say that maybe now we'll understand why a black person might not like to be called a "negro"... I haven't heard that term used much from Conservatives, or anyone else, at least since the 1940's or so. I also don't hear many Conservatives going around calling people "crippled."

Please codify your point.

Ok, those are terms modified by "political correctness." The examples in your link make that assertion. Your link is a statement of fact, not an offense taken by Conservatives. However, your original comment suggested that Conservatives are complaining about being called "teabaggers" and you try to equate some form of PC to their reasoning.

My point about the use of the descriptors you included ("negro" and "crippled") was that Conservative aren't complaining about those terms, nor the current evolution of those terms as a result of PC. Conservatives don't call African-Americans derogatory terms; bigots do. Conservatives don't belittle the handicapped (in fact, Conservatives don't abort them either); immature fools do.

Conservatives don't wish to be called "teabaggers" because it has a sexual meaning. And when its used to describe a group of people, it is demeaning, and meant that way. No one who uses the term "teabaggers" and is aware of its sexual connotation, uses it to describe Conservatives in a positive, or even neutral, light.  I would equate it closer to the use of the N-word for blacks as it too, has a very negative connotation which is thereby naturally offensive. It doesn't have the gravity of the N-word, certainly, but it is similarly offensive in its application.

So, since you brought it up, maybe you should offer why Conservatives should NOT be offended by the "teabaggers" label (since it is a label, and we know how Liberals hate the use of labels.) After all, they we originally referring to themselves, after a fashion, as T-Partiers until Liberals like Garofalo and Maddow (interestingly, two "women" who probably have very little first hand experience with the derogatory "teabagger" term) made it so popular...

Gosh, I don't know.... maybe it's because no one is calling the "other people" names that imply participation in  a disgusting sexual practice.

"Crippled" and "Negro" aren't exactly in the same league.

Let's see how it would work if people want to call blacks "niggers" or mentally disabled people "retards."

Thank the heavenly father for Obama

Critical,

I generally have no problem with addressing people in a manner which is both appropriate and in line with the request of those I am addressing but that does not change defining terms.  An illegal alien is illegal because they are in the country illegally.  If I refer to my friend Dario as a friend, Mexican, an intellect, a father or  a lousy softball player he is still by definition illegal.  Being referenced as a part of a group of people that are illegal aliens in this country does not change the person but on a national scale it does allow people to have a discussion about a problem that faces this nation.

If you see a term used to refer to a problem as a personal insult against individuals - I would consider that to be over sensitive.  If people use the word as an insult to an individual - I would consider that overly emotional.  Many illegal aliens are good people, many are bad but the issue of illegal aliens in the US is a problem.

Conservatives, unfortunately, write mostly political books.  Even if they sell well they don't have anywhere near the impact that the all-pervasive Leftists have on our basic thought processes concerning social issues, economics, politics, history and so on.

The origin of the word "scumbag" is "used condom".  Obama, in referring to dissenters as "teabag Americans", places himself squarely into the "scumbag" category.

As Ann Coulter has said, Liberals accuse Conservatives of what they, themselves, are guilty of.

Obama won't be able to keep his favorability status.  Nobody likes a scumbag, except another scumbag.
