The New York Times Caucus blog reported moments ago that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been censured by the local Republican Party in his home state "for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of South Carolina."
In essence, he's getting slammed for being what conservatives call a RINO -- Republican in name only.
As the Times' Bernie Becker reported:
The executive committee of the Charleston County Republican Party voted unanimously on Monday to rebuke Mr. Graham “for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of South Carolina, such as: passing a ‘cap and trade’ energy bill, bailing out banks and granting amnesty for illegal aliens.”
Lin Bennett, the chairwoman of the local party, told the Charleston Post and Courier that party leaders were “fed up.”
“The feeling is if you’re not going to uphold the platform, then why bother to run as a Republican?” she said. Ms. Bennett also said that about 50 members of the executive committee voted on the censure, according to the Post and Courier. But the move closely follows the fallout from the November elections, where conservatives pushed hard against centrist Republicans over candidates who don’t adhere to a narrow base of core principles.
Like that line? "But the move closely follows the fallout from the November elections, where conservatives pushed hard against centrist Republicans over candidates who don’t adhere to a narrow base of core principles."
Wow! I guess it's a terrible thing now for citizens to hold their politicians to core principles.
Of course, this goes hand in hand with the media's view of why Dede Scozzafava was forced to pull out of last week's election in New York's 23rd Congressional district.
The fault is with conservatives who want elected officials to share their core principles RATHER than the officials themselves who are leaving the reservation or never possessed such values in the first place.
Ironically, you wouldn't imagine the New York Times chastizing the teeming hordes of liberals who would never consider voting for a Democrat -- regardless of his or her other positions! -- if he or she wasn't pro-abortion.
But what the Times really missed here is that the full resolution was by no means as "narrow" as Becker implied:
Whereas, U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (SC) and John Kerry (MA) have called for a bipartisan bill dealing with “climate change” via a “Cap & Trade” energy bill;
Whereas, the basis of Cap & Trade – global warming caused by carbon emissions – is still in doubt as evidenced by the past decade of cooling temperatures;
Whereas, the people of South Carolina can ill afford the job-killing Cap & Trade bill’s ripple effects on our state’s economy and on personal energy bills;
Whereas, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham supported TARP and has shown a willingness to discuss nationalizing U.S. banking institutions;
Whereas, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has shown a condescending attitude toward his constituents by calling them “bigots” when they oppose his stance on amnesty for illegal aliens;
Whereas, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has stated on many occasions that his primary concern is to “be relevant”;
Whereas, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham continues to hold the Republican Party hostage and undermines Republican leadership and party solidarity for his own benefit by joining the “Gang of 10″ and the “Gang of 14″;
Whereas, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham – in the name of bipartisanship – continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom, rule of law, and fiscal conservatism.
Therefore, let it be resolved: The Charleston County Republican Party Executive Committee respectfully requests, with sincere sadness that the South Carolina Republican Party withdraw their resolution commending U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and that the Charleston Country Republican Party censure U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of Charleston County SC, such as: passing a “Cap & Trade” energy bill, bailing out banks, and granting amnesty for illegal aliens.
Seems like the Charleston County Republican Party has quite a lengthy list of grievances with their senator which were by no means indicative of what the Times called a narrow base of core principles.
Color me unsurprised.

I disagree. She was brilliant. Saved that company. Too bad one of the Board Members hated her guts and was gunning for her from day one. DeVote over Fiorina Anyday
November 11, 2009 - 21:29 ET by BrutariusRegarding Carly and HP: I've been involved in the computer hardware and software industry since 1989, and yes, her decisions did gut the company. I mean, for crying out loud, she merged with Compaq -- one of the -worst- PC manufacturers at the time. Horrible, horrible move.
Other things I don't care for about Fiorina: she favors expanding the H-1B Visa program, which takes jobs away from Americans, and she has strong globalist leanings. She also wants government regulation of the Internet, which is one of the few prosperous things we have left in these socialist times.
Chuck DeVore is a California state assemblyman who believes in offshore drilling, expanding nuclear power, reducing income taxes, and smaller government. He earned a 100% score from the California Taxpayer's Assocation and the CA Chamber of Commerce (and NRA, too).
Sheesh
November 12, 2009 - 01:37 ET by UnsaneInternet censorship/Net Neutrality? No thanks. But...
and she has strong globalist leanings. Anyone who accuses people of being "globalist" means you want the United States completely, hermentically sealed off from the rest of the world. It ain't gonna happen.
she favors expanding the H-1B Visa program, which takes jobs away from Americans, You are a nativist too! This actually causes a brain drain from the rest of the world, which can actually CREATE jobs in the United States. Besides, we need things like this, thanks to our crappy educational system which doesn't turn out enough Americans to handle those jobs. If we had a good educational system, it wouldn't be a problem. Til then...
Now, if you pair an expansion of a visa program WITH a massive crackdown on illegal immigration, even better!
But for now I am neutral on both.

Don't put words in my mouth...
November 12, 2009 - 12:30 ET by BrutariusJust because I indicate someone is a globalist doesn't mean I think we should be "completely, hermeically" sealed off from the rest of the world. What I know is that our industrial base has been decimated by trade agreements -- coupled with brutal federal regulation and taxation -- that prevent us from competing with the rest of the word.
With unemployment over ten percent -- and when you look at the U6 figure and factor out the phoney birth-death ratio, the rate is over 20 percent -- I can see no need to increase the need for H-1B visas at this time. Additionally, a recent UCIS report indicates a 20 percent rate of fraud in the H-1B program.
Regarding her performance at Hewlett Packard: CBS pointed out in February 2005 that "the changes that Fiorina made didn't turn out so well for the thousands
of Hewlett Packard and Compaq employees that were laid off and the
millions of HP stockholders who lost equity since she took over. HP
stock is worth less today than it was in 1999. Dell and IBM stock has
increased in value." Conde Nast's Portfolio ranked her in the top 20 WORST American CEOs of all time.
I won't go into her position at Revolution Health, where she rubs shoulders with folks like Franklin Raines and Jeffrey Zients....

As far as I'm concerned, Southern California doesn't have Senate representation at all, but San Francisco/Oakland [same difference] has had 2 Senators for the past 16 years. I don't know much about Chuck Devore, except that he's a Republican Congressman from Orange County. His being a Southern Californian is enough to keep me interested.
According to her website, one of Fiorina's 2 residences is in Northern California [Silicon Valley to be exact]. She also already has a home in DC.

In the meantime, you need to accept that not everyone is as big a Statist/Socialist as you are.
Finally, a Statist/Socialist lecturing conservatives on "name calling" and "refrain(ing) from voting (Politician X, Y or Z) back into office for the umpteenth time" is much like a whore lecturing us on the virtues of chastity. Just a thought. Good night, and thank you for as usual showing us your complete intellectual bankruptcy and the fact you are bereft of ideas.
