"Saturday Night Live" in its recent installment took shots at the Fox News Channel for what it saw as an amazingly one-sided, anti-Obama take on Tuesday's election results.
The skit began with an off-screen announcer declaring, "You're watching Fox News, continuous coverage of the 2009 election -- end of an era."
On screen at that moment was a picture of President Obama above a graphic which read, "End Of An Era."
Actress Kristin Wiig, doing a marvelous impersonation of Greta Van Susteren, then hosted a discussion on the election results which included one-sided opinions from actors impersonating Glenn Beck, Brit Hume, Karl Rove, Shepard Smith, Joe Trippi, and Juan Williams.
The group was ecstatic over what happened in New Jersey and Virginia, but chose not to discuss Democrat Bill Owens victory in New York's 23rd Congressional district (video embedded below the fold h/t Story Balloon):
In the end, it really wasn't a very good skit with the exception of Wiig's great job impersonating Greta.
Brava, Kristin.

Sun, 11/08/2009 - 12:55 ET by TomoramaI actually thought this was kind of funny, but a bit too long.
This is the first WHOLE show that I actually laughed at in the last few years (maybe the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning hosters).
The best line of the night was Seth Meyers on the Update, where he announced that they voted for the bill to SLIGHT applause and Meyers said that "Pelosi was so moved in making the announcement that she was almost moved to BLINK".
Funny line and great show, they are learning to grow skits like in the olden days, and though I have bashed the show previous, last night was good.
I have NO problem with equal bashing of both parties and personalities, but the Obama gushing and Palin bashing was a disgrace but they just followed the medias PLAN.

Hey, funny for a minute or two
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 13:42 ET by carolina09I agree--that impersonation of Greta was amusing. The others, not so. You'd think they'd be able to do a good Beck! And I think their regular Obama-impersonator is just lousy. (NBC SNL knows a lot more people watch Fox than watch them, hence the flattering attention they give.
Don't think I laughed more than once
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 14:16 ET by rolling_oThis very unfunny skit again proved Rush's maxim that good comedy has to be based on truth.
While Wiig's impression of was amusing, the rest of the jokes fell flat because there was little truth behind them.
They played Juan Williams and Shep Smith as conservatives when they are not, and Beck wasn't a part of the election night coverage. In fact, he hasn't been on Fox News since before the election due to his appendicitis. But hey! Sudeikis can do a passable impression, so let's somehow work Beck into the mix!
Joe Trippi was a commentator on election night, and he pretty much got equal time during his segments in order to make his points.
Except for Tina Fey's impressions of Sarah Palin and the skit about Joe Wilson shouting "You lie" as a takeoff on the old "pencil drop" prank from grades chool (where Wilson doesn't get the message that the rest of the group called it off while he was in the bathroom,) SNL has shown again and again this year that they simply don't get conservatives, and therefore are awful at basing humor about them.
Last night's skit would have been funnier had they had "Shep" been more dejected when reporting Virginia and New Jersey results, then happy when announcing NY-23, and something similar could have been done with Juan and Trippi (nearly suicidal regarding VA and NJ, for example).
Brit's a serious news guy, but I remember him and Juan going at it during the panel segments of Fox News Sunday a few years back. Something probably could have been done along those lines.
Also, after seeing how tall and slender Taylor Swift actually is, they should have figured out a way to incorporate an Ann Coulter character. Give her some snarky, funny lines. Then again, IIRC, Wiig's already impersonated her in other skits, they might not have wanted to encroach on her turf.
The Obama skit several weeks back about failing to meet campaign promises was funny because there had been recent articles from the left going after his inability to complete those promises.
I mentioned Tina Fey's impression of Sarah Palin earlier as and example of doing it right. She gets the voice and mannerisms, then takes true things about Gov Palin and exaggerates them just enough to make them funny. For example, Sarah truthfully said that from certain parts of Alaska, one can see Russia (if only an outer island or the coast,) which make's Fey's line that "I can see Russia from my house!" a funny exaggeration of the truth.
As another example, look at Alec Baldwin's conservative character, Jack, on "30 Rock". I loathe Baldwin's politics, but I love the way he plays Jack, and to me, a many of the lines he's given tweak conservatives with just the right ring of truth that, while I wouldn't agree with them, make them funny.
The Good Shepherd
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 14:20 ET by Desperado67I thought this skit was pretty funny, but the part about the Hoffman loss in NY was completely wrong. Fox News covered that race quite extensively.
As for the skit itself, I thought the guy doing Shepherd Smith was spot-on. I don't watch Smith's show very often, and that is mainly due to how he talks and acts on there.

Re SNL
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 15:03 ET by slickwillie2001Meh. Wiig's Greta is the only memorable slot. Greta's semi-mumble delivery is difficult to mimic and Wiig's needs work but it's a damn good shot. She should have also dropped the entire last words or the last half of the last words from sentences.
The Hume is terrible, the Smith is worse. They portrayed Smith as a conservative which is just wrong. They could have had great fun satirizing Smith's position as the only gay liberal in a conservative organization but they took a pass. Greta is also not a Republican.
The Rove is a mean takeoff on his appearance and nothing else. Beck was not bad, I'm surprised they don't do Beck weekly since he's the Bamster's target #1.
Agree with others on Armisen's Obama (not in this video). He clearly doesn't like doing it so he doesn't try very hard. He's just reading the lines in a regular voice. We desperately need a Steve Bridges-type Obama.
BTW, I got to a third computer before I found one where the video would not crash Firefox.

I agree about the Beck impersonation...to me it was the only close one, other than Greta...which needs more work.
As to Shep...that was ridiculous...he would have almost been teary-eyed about the loss...either they don't pay that much attention to whose who on Fox or did that intentionally regarding him.

Hader Too
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 15:17 ET by slickwillie2001BTW, Bill Hader did Shemp Smith, not a great job in this case because of the bad material and wrong slant, but Hader is worth keeping along with Wiig and Sudeikis. He does an awesome Pacino and John Mayer. The rest of them can go.
They used to do it right
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 15:33 ET by rolling_oChevy's Ford - Worst "impression" ever (Chevy didn't even try the voice,) but few golf balls hit into the crowd and a fall on the stairs of Air Force one gave Chevy all he needed to work with to make this a classic SNL favorite.
Ackroyd's Carter - Dan got the voice and mannerisms right, and was able to play on Carter's policy's and foibles to make this one work
Hartman's Reagan - Probably my favorite, mainly because he got the voice and mannerisms down so well, and the makeup was good. My favorite sketch was "Ronald Reagan: Mastermind", where Hartman plays him alternately as the soft spoken nice guy the public saw, and the hard-nose, high-energy "brains" behind every White House action. This sketch was made all the better, when after his death, biographies and his diaries made it clear that he was closer to the "Mastermind" version than most people knew.
http://www.hulu.com/watch/4174/saturday-night-live-president-reagan-mast...
Carvey's GHW Bush - Great impression! Took Bush's "Read my lips", "Operation Desert Storm", "Not gonna do it" and "Wouldn't be prudent" and made the character truly funny.
Hammond's Clinton -- Again, a great impression that utilized Clinton's mannerisms (lip biting and womanizing,) along with his love of junk food, to make the character truly memorable. And now that Hammond's more or less off the show, they still bring him back to do Clinton.
Ferrell's Bush -- one of the worst IMO, mainly because it seemed to come out of hatred for Bush. Little effort to do the voice and mannerism, no makeup, and mostly poor writing. Frank Caliendo's version on "Mad TV" was much funnier.
Armisen's Obama -- started out pretty good during the 2008 debate parodies, but has since degenerated into a "going through the motions" performance. In addition, the writers are afraid (except for that one sketch mentioned earlier) to hit him.
Here are a couple of missed opportunities that I think could have been very funny:
1) After the buyout of GM, have "Obama" speaking to the American people from the door of the White House, then (using a green screen,) have him walk into the front grounds of the WH, which is covered with GM cars. He puts on a cowboy hat, and begins a Cal Worthington-like spiel about what it would take to put you into a car.
2) When folks began to notice Obama's use of the teleprompter, they could have put together a sketch where "Obama" finishes the last few lines of a speech, then leaves the stage to talk with some staff backstage. While talking, he continues to move his head side-to-side while his staff awkwardly shuffles back and forth to remain in his view.
Instead, we get a weak impression, and (while it was amusing the first time,) Duane Johnson as "The Rock Obama" throwing people out a window.
Re Reagan
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 16:27 ET by slickwillie2001Good list; re the Reagan skit, I've been waiting for a remake of that with the Bamster, in reverse. He plays Mr. Urbane acting-white politician reading the teleprompter, then leaves that room, lowers his pants, and starts talking hip hop like the Wayans brothers might do.
Or, a remake of the President George W. Bush skit where at a press conference he has a little sign that he holds up regularly which says 'Clinton's Fault', only of course the Bamster's would say 'Bush's Fault'.

NewsBusters Missed Again
Mon, 11/09/2009 - 08:25 ET by BlueCat57NewsBusters missed yet another opportunity to point out that Fox News indeed has a bias. I think the SNL crew showed the bias, but all you NB fans are choosing to ignore it.
Fox did indeed ignore the Hoffman loss. When I went to FoxNews.com last Wed. morning to see the outcome of NY23 there were no headlines about the race and the loss by a conservative. Fox buried the news in other stories more favorable to the conservative cause.
I think Fox should have run a headline story on the results of the NY23 race. That story was as big as NF and VA.
This also points out that NB itself has a bias. Or maybe it doesn't. I don't read every blog post here, but I haven't come across many instances where they point out conservative bias.
I gave up on FactCheck.org once their liberal bias started showing through. Until recently NB's conservative bias didn't show through. Now it does. Now it is time to hold NB to the same standards they are demanding of the MSM.
