AP: Obama's Glow From Health Care Triumph Over -- Bill DOA In Senate

Photo of Noel Sheppard.
  • Bookmark and Share

"The glow from a health care triumph faded quickly for President Barack Obama on Sunday as Democrats realized the bill they fought so hard to pass in the House has nowhere to go in the Senate."

That's not a quote from National Review, the Weekly Standard, NewsMax, or World Net Daily.

Such was the opening paragraph of a truly surprising Associated Press article published moments ago:

Speaking from the Rose Garden about 14 hours after the late Saturday vote, Obama urged senators to be like runners on a relay team and "take the baton and bring this effort to the finish line on behalf of the American people."

The problem is that the Senate won't run with it. The government health insurance plan included in the House bill is unacceptable to a few Democratic moderates who hold the balance of power in the Senate.

If a government plan is part of the deal, "as a matter of conscience, I will not allow this bill to come to a final vote," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Connecticut independent whose vote Democrats need to overcome GOP filibusters.

"The House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said dismissively.

Democrats did not line up to challenge him. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has yet to schedule floor debate and hinted last week that senators may not be able to finish health care this year.

Checking that link to make sure this really is an AP piece.

I understand.

"The House bill is dead on

"The House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said dismissively.

All I can say is....

YAAAAYYYY!!!!

I'm just hoping they don't just rearrange the crap and call it a new bill!

And I hope Dingy Harry gets slapped down big time by the people of Nevada next year to boot!

Dead in house

I also heard several times that the bill would never get thru the house. All I can do is keep up the fight and hope many, many others do also.

Jerry, That's what I

Jerry,

That's what I remember hearing too!  I think that this thing is going to be passed by hook or by crook! (literally)  I just hope the elections in 2010 bring some enlightened folks in that have the guts to turn this mess around.  It took a Reagan to start the Reagan revolution, and we don't have one yet.  Not Pawlenty and not Huckabee.  Definitely not Jindal as we were led to believe at the begining of this year.  Newt is an opportunistic RINO happy to hang his coat on past accomplishments that aren't even fully his.  Palin's the only one who I feel actually  understands what the conservative movement's about, but I'm not sure she has the chops.  I don't see anyone coming out of left field that's going to surprise me, and I'm not entirely sure that we'll have another "'94" shift next November.  It's time to hang on for a bumpy ride. We could be in for 7 more years of this shit.  God save the Republic!

7 more years---

tsscis:

I sure wish I could disagree with "could be in for 7 more-."

Unfortunately, since everything else you mentioned was spot on, you are right again in bringing up the possibility.

What is really sad, is the fact  the posprez got in with an "experience" resume so thin you could see through it and read newsprint on the other side.

The LibDem bast**ds with their MSM cohorts rode Palin unmercifully on the experience bit, and turned around and fawned all over LOTUS/TOTUS as if breathing counted as experience.

Jeez.

Makes me sad.

And mad.

tccls, this country will not survive 7 more years of Obama

Not exactly sure we'll make it after even three more years of this insanity.

I honestly think what happens next November is going to decide the ultimate fate of this country, assuming that fate isn't already decided.

I won't consider this health

I won't consider this health care junk dead until it is actually voted down... I am weary some crap will still pass to ruin the health care system. it was also thought at one point the public option would be dead in the house and we see how that turned out

I hope the AP is

I hope the AP is right...along with what other congress-critters have said...but I fear they will have a bill before it's over...and it does pass if Fearless Leader Reid uses the reconciliation BS.

There will be a heck of a fight if this is tried.

'Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea'~Breitbart

don't fall for it!!

They're trying to get conservatives complacent so we let our guard down. A month ago it was DOA in the House and we see how that worked out.

This is not a report on the Senate killing it, this is a hit piece on Harry Reid because he can't do what Pelosi did.

Now is not the time to relax.

i totally agree.

dingy harry is just crooked enough to try some underhanded move and get this bill passed.  make sure your elected officials know that government-run health care is totally unacceptable in any form.

swing hard in case you hit it.

Candance~~

"Now is not the time to relax."

I agree.  Those slimy libs Pelosi and Reid will do anything to get this through.

Lindsey Graham gives me

Lindsey Graham gives me little comfort. I don't trust the AP at all.

Lindsey=Center for American Progress

A progressivist outfit is buying radio ads for Graham's energy tax, "cap and trade" in South Carolina.  If he's getting money from Soros on one front, how reliable is he with Pelosicare?  Also Graham gets most of his money for trial lawyers, and has opposed any tort reform that has come before the Senate.

The dem mongrals are

The dem mongrals are thinking about their job security right now. They will reword and remold this piece of crap legislation to make it sound better and give it another push, but they will wait to 3am to sneak the sheet back in there. just sayin

Watch What The Other Hand Is Doing!

I think the Democrats will pull something akin to sneaking the Matthew Sheppard Hate Crimes Bill into the Defense Budget. They will let it die on the floor then slip it in some other legislation that has been approved through another committee.

Rasmussen

Don't forget Rasmussen is 54/42 against the "health care plan proposed by President Obama and the congressional Democrats".

I'm not going to believe anything until after the vote.

The day Obama was elected I thought there was a chance.

The day CRAP AND TAX was voted in I thought there was a chance.

Yesterday before the House voted to take over 1/5th of the economy with the intent of wiping out the insurance industry I thought there was a chance.

Obama and his goon squad have managed to bribe their way through up to this point and I think we could see it again.

Not convinced...Yet.

This health care reform legislation has had so many re-incarnations...It's been declared dead about a 1000 times, and it keeps coming back, in one form or another...The fact that it passed in the House, again, doesn't mean that it will pass in the Senate, that's true. But...I am still not ready to dance on it's grave yet. It doesn't look good in the Senate, but until it becomes clear that it's really over, I'm not going to start celebrating.

Fingers crossed.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

as it should be

I sincerely hope that Sen. Leiberman means what he says-- he generally does-- that this monstrosity is truly DOA in his chamber-- and hopefully the deranged minds that got this thing through the House, will be sent packing in 2010-- I'd like to congratulate the congressman from the US First District of Virginia, Glen Nye, for voting against it-- it's too bad his fellow rep. from the 2nd Dist, Scott, doesn't share the same sensibility-- Scott, from Richmond, enjoys representing a gerrymandered district which runs all the way to Norfolk-- and I'm getting tired of seeing him sent back to DC every 2 years--

spepper... I understand

spepper...

I understand your frustration regarding Scott.

He drives me crazy when he blathers on and on...always has.

Glad you filled me in on what kind of a district he is in...nothing like gerrymandered districts...what a mess the big-wigs have made over the years...on both sides of the aisle at times.

exactly. So much has happened with this bs legislation, I'm not ready to trust that it's dead, yet.

"The problem is not that people are taxed too little...the problem is that government spends too much." ~President Ronald Reagan

PS,

It's like I said before the House vote, they'll pass something, even if its a blank sheet of paper.

Ditto for the Senate.

The time to get really scared is when whatever makes it through the Senate gets taken into the conference committee, and then they run out with whatever abortion of a bill they come up with, and have one of those middle-of-the-night final votes.

I wouldn't put anything past these cretins.

-Dave

Our elected representatives have failed us.

I hope you know how right you are.

They can say anything they want in a bill.

But the goal is to get the whole plan into the hands of their bureaucracies where, as we know, the real damage is done.

In the fine print we'll see escape clauses such as, 'at the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury (or HHS, or DOJ, etc.)' that will in effect change the entire plan into what Pelosi, Reid and Obama wanted all along.

With bureaucrats making the real life and death decisions, Congress is no longer 'on the hook' for the resulting economic, libertarian and humanitarian devastation.

That's the endgame. Get something...anything...to Obama's desk.

The 'apparatchiks' will take it from there.

Then you can kiss individual liberty, economic freedom and representative government goodbye.

As GUN CONTROL has nothing to do with GUNS, so HEALTH CONTROL has nothing to do with HEALTH.

Tg, Yep, and right after that...

...comes Crap & Tax, which will kill whatever jobs, freedoms and liberties that ObamaCare misses, and I don't believe it is as dead as many are saying.

The sad part is, the repubs won't get a real opportunity to go after either of these until after November of 2012. Even if they take the House next year, they won't have enough votes to override a veto, and it wouldn't matter even if they did because I think the Senate is going to stay under the control of the Marxists until at least 2012.

God, what an awful fix we're in.

-Dave

Our elected representatives have failed us.

And with a wooden stake and

And with a wooden stake and a silver bullet in its heart. The lefty Marxists have far too much time, energy and ego invested in this thing to just say, "Oh, well, we tried, but lost" and walk away.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

cel,

Exactly, and I think the election results of last Tuesday have infused the Marxists with a new sense of urgency, as they have to be thinking they might just lose the House next November.

This is when these people are at their most dangerous, and that is when they are desperate.

They know this chance might not come again for another 16 years or more.

-Dave

Our elected representatives have failed us.

  I don't trust this

I don't trust this report either.  My cynical side says this is just a way to make the people not curious about what is in the healthcare bill just passed.

Nothing to see here.  Move along...

MidAmerica...Right...

"Nothing to see here. Move along..."

Exactly. Maybe I'm paranoid, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's an attempt to lull people into a false sense of security that this legislation is dead, in the hopes that folks will let their guard down and tune out on the topic. Hope I'm wrong, but with the MSM, who knows?

This could be a red herring

This could be a red herring from the AP to make conservatives complacent that the attempted government health care coup is dead.  Look for Dingy Harry to run this bill through the Reconcilation process and avoid the possibility of a fillibuster.  I will not believe anything until this mess of a bill dies with a stake through it heart.

Tom

Tom Paine...

Exactly...I've mentioned as such myself regarding reconciliation...of course they will use it if they can....plus people need to remember if they have a "Trigger" option that Snowe and her ilk want on both side of the aisles as cover for their rears....they may not need to use reconciliation.

'Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea'~Breitbart

As long as the government doesn't trust ME...

I guaran-damn-tee you that Obama and Democrats will 'pull' that trigger as soon as such a bill becomes law.

The day after "Crap and Tax" was passed with the "help" of 8 RINO traitors we were PROMISED it was "dead in the Senate".  And who is now leading the battle to pass it?  Boxer, Kerry, and LINDSEY GRAHAM!  So now PelosiCare is dead in the Senate according to who? Lindsey Graham?  HA!

The Republican party gets not a dime from me until I see RESULTS.  Not promises, RESULTS.

My wife and I have said the same to the Republican Party for about 3 years now.

This country can't pay for all this and all Americans know it. Some just don't care.

Okie:

It infuriates me that not only does Lindsey Graham plan to vote for "Crap and Tax", but he is out there giving joint press conferences ("green energy") with Kerry trying to pass it.

At that point I realized the night before had not been a nightmare.

Maybe -optimist- will return to my vocabulary someday.

ObamaCare Cost More than a 'Happy Meal'

Liberals have a problem in understanding anything that takes logic and reason, so I have simplified it for them.

Most estimates of ObamaCare are about $1.2 Trillion dollars and some as high as $2.2 Trillion dollars.

Many Americans say what is the big deal, Compassion by the Government should be 'Coerced' for the 'Common Good'.

What exactly is $1 Trillion dollars?

The Human Heart will beat approximately 2 billion times in a lifetime of 75 years. If a person incrementally counts by 1 with each heartbeat, they would have to live 37,500 years to count to 1 Trillion.

A 'One Dollar Bill' is .0043 inches thick, one trillion dollars stacked in one dollar bills would be about 68,000 miles high.

The Liberal 'War on Poverty' so far has stacked up dollar bills 2,720,000 miles high with NO END in sight, enough dollar bills to stack to the Moon 110 times.

Liberals contend that the 'Reason' the War on Poverty has had little if any effect on Poverty, "NOT enough money has been spent".

The Government has NEVER accurately predicted the cost of any of their 'Social Programs', the actual costs are always much higher than the prediction.

The Government NEVER assesses the cost of any collateral damage, which usually far exceeds the currency cost in Human suffering, destruction of the family (Welfare prime example) and many emotional problems (children raised without fathers) and crime associated with being subsidized for life's needs and nothing but time to get into trouble.

Liberals do you have any idea now that ObamaCare is more costly than a 'Happy Meal'.

Liberal "Ignorant Certainty"

Ignorant Certainty is NOT a 'NEW' Human Phenomenon.

Some Humans can only be 'Certain' about things they do NOT understand or know little if anything about, as long as there is 'Consensus'.

Examples are to numerous to list, but the findings of Galileo are a prime example. Many Humans were 'Certain' that the Universe revolved around the Earth (many Humans still believe that the Earth is flat).

Many Humans in America are 'Certain' that the 'Barack Obama Economic Doctrine' of borrowing and spending will reduce America's debt and bring about financial health for future generations.

Many Humans are 'Certain' that a Commodity like Health Insurance, is really NOT a Commodity but a 'Civil Right', that should be given or subsidized by 'Coercion' for all living in America, whether they are legal American Citizens or illegal immigrants.

Many Humans are 'Certain' that the cost of Universal Health Care will be 'Deficit Neutral' (pay for itself) and will Not strain existing Hospitals, Doctors, Nurses and other existing Health Care workers.

Many Humans are 'Certain' that there will be NO Health Care rationing and in fact they are 'Certain' that the quality of Health Care will improve and they are 'Certain' Health Care costs will be reduced.

Many Humans are 'Certain' that a Muslim shouting 'Allahu Akbar' in a maniacal voice while he shot killed and wounded American Soldiers, had nothing to do with Islam.

Many Humans are 'Certain' that all of this is clearly immanent (within the limits of empirical evidence and knowledge) and is NOT transcendent (BEYOND the limits of empirical evidence and knowledge).

'Ignorant Certainty' is NOT a 'NEW' Human Phenomenon and is exemplified by Barack Obama and his followers.

Maybe Pelosi is throwing Reid under the bus

I certainly hope this is DOA in the Senate, but I wouldn't count on it.  One possibility that I have considered is that Pelosi knew this thing would never make it through the Senate (especially with the public option) and went ahead with the vote to have something to show her constituents.  Now she and the other dems in the House can lay the blame of a failure on Reid and the Senate.

Could be

This is how the House works--definitely. She also gave Dems in shaky seats clearance to vote no... It's not conscience or research--it's holding a job. Unemployment is high, you know.

recognizing authority/anarchy

I won't recognize anyone's authority who won't follow the law themselves.

I don't recognize that I will obey any rule that says I have to buy health care or go to jail.

I don't recognize Pelousy as someone who's speaker of the house due to her not recognizing she has a duty to uphold the Constitution.

I most emphatically do not recognize Barry Soetoro as president of the united states.  That's a title reserved for someone born in THIS country, not Africa.  Bill Clinton was a real president.  A real sucky one, but a real one.  This person is not.
