Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence Parties' candidate for the 23rd Congressional District of New York state who suspended her campaign Saturday, announced moments ago she was throwing her support behind Democrat candidate Bill Owens rather than the Conservative Party's Doug Hoffman.
This should make liberal media members ecstatic for the next 48 hours.
Scozzafava just released the following statement to the Watertown Daily Times (h/t Tweeter NYfitter):
I want to thank you for your support and friendship. Over the past 24 hours, I have had encouraging words sent to my family and me. Many of you have asked me whom you should support on Tuesday.
Since announcing the suspension of my campaign, I have thought long and hard about what is best for the people of this District, and how to answer your questions. This is not a decision that I have made lightly.
You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District.
It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.
It’s not in the cards for me to be your representative, but I strongly believe Bill is the only candidate who can build upon John McHugh's lasting legacy in the U.S. Congress. John and I worked together on the expansion of Fort Drum and I know how important that base is to the economy of this region. I am confident that Bill will be able to provide the leadership and continuity of support to Drum Country just as John did during his tenure in Congress.
In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.
Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship and politics and work together. There's too much at stake in this election to do otherwise.

Stupid decision
November 1, 2009 - 15:30 ET by doug1950but just confirms what most of us already knew about this candidate. She is not a real Republican and certainly not conservative. I hope this bites her so hard on the A** she won't be able to sit down for 4 yrs.
I further hope the RNC is watching their candidate. Had they thrown their full support behind the true conservative in the beginning we probably never would have even heard of this woman and it would have been a tsunami against the Dems walking away.

Yeah. Know who Newt
November 2, 2009 - 08:11 ET by BDYeah.
Know who Newt reminds me of?
In the movie "Braveheart" there are a pair of clan leaders prior to the start of the battle of Sterling Bridge who are preparing to ride forward to negotiate for terms from the invading English Army so they risk nothing of their own personal position. They will continue in their own position while selling out as long as the army remains on the field behind them and does not disperse.
Newt is the same way. As long as we stand on the field behind him, he can continue to "Negotiate for terms".
The perfect example was when he tried to justify his concurrence that Global Warming existed two years ago. He said he did it so he could be at the table in discussing what would be done about it. To negotiate the terms of the impact down as it were. He was done for me at that point. He was not willing to fight the good fight but rather sought pointless negotiation to keep his own position intact.
We need someone to ride out and "Pick a fight" with the liberals which is what Palin, Limbaugh, and Hannity do. Thank God.

November 1, 2009 - 22:40 ET by bigtimerWhen Dkos and ACORN were supporting her that is all one needed to know....and we're supposed to follow Newt?
Heck...I quit listening to Newt when he was still the Majority Leader.
I've watched him punish/destroy conservatives that had a chance to win in the past...if they didn't so his bidding...his way.
'Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea'~Breitbart
Like I said the other day, Scozzafava doesn't even qualify...
November 1, 2009 - 22:40 ET by R D Helm...as a RINO.
As for her endorsement of Owens, what would you expect?

Is this a Surprise??
November 2, 2009 - 00:05 ET by DelsaDede was and is a left wing Democrat in RINO clothing.
I never had a doubt who she'd endorse!
In a way, she may have just done Hoffman a huge favor by showing her true colors.
I wonder if Newt is going to
November 2, 2009 - 04:01 ET by captain139I wonder if Newt is going to endorse Bill Owen's as well now that his favor has? Way to go Newt! Good luck on your Prez run...NOT!
Rino maximus
November 2, 2009 - 07:54 ET by nadadhimmiSee, Dede is just like Newt after all. Endorsing liberals. Remember Newt and his chicken-stuff global warming commercials? Newt is struggling to expand his personal power against the very people that should be his constituancy, and he will be, and is, being dumped by them. I guarantee Gingrich is more comfortable at a NY cocktail party than at a Teaparty. Nuff said
Newt (D)
November 2, 2009 - 08:01 ET by Sergeant ROCKHave to agree with you there. His transformation began with his conversion to Catholicism, I believe. That was hotly debated here a while back.

I doubt the conversion had
November 2, 2009 - 08:16 ET by BDI doubt the conversion had much to do with it. The new wife on the other hand....
Newt's scheme
November 2, 2009 - 08:25 ET by Sergeant ROCKI disagree. He made a calculated decison on that. By itself, it doesn't amount to much. However, coupled with other moves like endorsing liberals, it all makes sense.
Why won't you endorse Newt's 'Big Tent' party?
"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

I just recall what happened
November 2, 2009 - 08:36 ET by BDI just recall what happened to Goldwater at the end of his life when he married a woman less than half his age. He was feeble, she was not and moved his persona to the left by using his foundations to invest in non-conservative motions such as abortion rights groups.
Regarding the catholicism - I find Catholics (real ones, which includes converts in this day) to be relentlessly conservative. I think that would actually be playing against his urges to go to the middle.
Still disagree
November 2, 2009 - 08:42 ET by Sergeant ROCKOn the second part, that is. How many liberals are Catholic?? A bunch. Maybe not 'real' Catholics, but Catholic nonetheless.
Like I said, by itself, not much. However, Everything that Newt is doing is a calculation toward a Presidential run in 2012. He won't get my vote, though.

Nor mine, and I will not
November 3, 2009 - 07:46 ET by BDNor mine, and I will not vote for John McCain again for Senate.
He is done as far as I am concerned and ANYONE on the ballot in opposition will get my vote even if it is Ralph Nader.

November 2, 2009 - 10:57 ET by doug1950I agree. How could a newly converted Catholic publicly support a candidate who has gone on record in suupport of abortion and gay marriage? I have said this many times here and elsewhere. Newt is an opportunist. No barrel is too low or scuzzy (pun intended) for him to scrape. As far as I am concerned, he is history. His personal conduct, his positions all over the place on things that are near and dear to Conservatives convinces me he is a RINO and not to be trusted AT ALL! I hope his organization and the RNC call me this week for donations. I can't wait to unload on them. I intend to ask them if they can get back the $900K they gave to this woman, if not why the hell are you asking me for more. They just squandered that which they did not have to give. I am convinced also that Michael Steele does not know what in the hell he is doing either. Time to clean house.
Newt the opportunist
November 11, 2009 - 07:23 ET by Sergeant ROCKThat's an astute observation. I was thinking that he was just getting some bad advice. But then, isn't that what the opposition does - react to which way they think the wind is blowing? Don't we have enough of those people in politics already?
Your point on abortion makes it pretty obvious that he is an opportunist.

November 2, 2009 - 10:45 ET by sam12663pudding. Weren't detractors of Scozzafava saying all along that she is really a Democrat claiming to be Republican? She is the female version of Benedict Arlen Sphincter. The question I have is for Newt Gingrich; how do you explain your support for Dede now? Kind of a kick in the nuggets huh?
President Obama is nothing more than a lying empty suit; a Hollywood style special effects smoke and mirrors show that has shown itself to be a total fraud.

It's a duck pretending to be a Rino.
So, how do you get down off a Rino? You don't, you get down off a duck. Or, the duck get's down off her Rino and endorses the ass.
Newt, you have dissappointed me.
