Frank Rich: Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Are 'Re-enacting Stalinism'

"The battle for upstate New York confirms just how swiftly the right has devolved into a wacky, paranoid cult that is as eager to eat its own as it is to destroy Obama. The movement’s undisputed leaders, Palin and Beck, neither of whom have what Palin once called the 'actual responsibilities' of public office, would gladly see the Republican Party die on the cross of right-wing ideological purity."

So wrote New York Times columnist Frank Rich in a piece that won't appear in print until Sunday, but was clearly intended to scare the Dickens out of the Times' few conservative readers on Halloween.

After all, in his "The G.O.P. Stalinists Invade Upstate New York," Rich unapologetically said no matter who wins in Tuesday's election for a House representative from New York's 23rd district, "the Republicans are the sure losers":

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
No matter what the results in that race on Tuesday, the Republicans are the sure losers. This could be a gift that keeps on giving to the Democrats through 2010, and perhaps beyond. [...]

That this pastoral setting could become a G.O.P. killing field, attracting an all-star cast of combatants led by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Kristol and Newt Gingrich, is a premise out of a Depression-era screwball comedy. But such farces have become the norm for the conservative movement — whether the participants are dressing up in full “tea party” drag or not.

Imagine that. The New York Times has a columnist that actually gets paid to tell readers no matter what happens, Republicans lose.

Talk about a gift that keeps on giving for liberals! Makes you wonder if the Times has someone in the sports section that will tell New Yorkers the Yankees won the World Series no matter what happens on the field.

Sadly, Rich was just getting warmed up:

The battle for upstate New York confirms just how swiftly the right has devolved into a wacky, paranoid cult that is as eager to eat its own as it is to destroy Obama. The movement’s undisputed leaders, Palin and Beck, neither of whom have what Palin once called the “actual responsibilities” of public office, would gladly see the Republican Party die on the cross of right-wing ideological purity.

Wow. Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck "would gladly see the Republican Party die on the cross of right-wing ideological purity?"

Actually, in the past two major election cycles, the Republican Party has died on the cross of liberalism as it gave back the White House and both chambers of Congress foolishly thinking a steady move to the left would benefit it.

Now that real conservatives are standing up to take back the reins of a Party in decline since George W. Bush was re-elected in 2004, liberal media members just can't stand it:

The right’s embrace of Hoffman is a double-barreled suicide for the G.O.P. On Saturday, the battered Scozzafava suspended her campaign, further scrambling the race. It’s still conceivable that the Democratic candidate could capture a seat the Republicans should own. But it’s even better for Democrats if Hoffman wins. Punch-drunk with this triumph, the right will redouble its support of primary challengers to 2010 G.O.P. candidates they regard as impure. That’s bad news for even a Republican as conservative as Kay Bailey Hutchison, whose primary opponent in the Texas governor’s race, the incumbent Rick Perry, floated the possibility of secession at a teabagger rally in April and hastily endorsed Hoffman on Thursday.

Amazing. Conservatives across the fruited plain cheered Saturday's announcement by Scozzafava, but Rich saw this as a defeat for the Right:

The more rightists who win G.O.P. primaries, the greater the Democrats’ prospects next year...Writing in 1964 of that era’s equivalent to today’s tea party cells, the historian Richard Hofstadter observed that the John Birch Society’s “ruthless prosecution” of its own ideological war often mimicked the tactics of its Communist enemies.

The same could be said of Beck, Palin and their acolytes. Though they constantly liken the president to various totalitarian dictators, it is they who are re-enacting Stalinism in full purge mode. They drove out Arlen Specter, and now want to “melt Snowe” (as the blog Red State put it).

What astounding nonsense. Specter became a Democrat because he had no chance of getting re-elected next November as a Republican. As such, he wasn't driven out. He left to save his own political career.

As for Snowe, calling her a RINO on Halloween is an insult to RINOs who don't need costumes to confuse the likes of Rich and his colleagues:

Only in the alternative universe of the far right is Obama a pariah and Palin the great white hope. It’s become a Beltway truism that the White House’s (mild) spat with Fox News is counterproductive because it drives up the network’s numbers. But if curious moderate and independent voters are now tempted to surf there and encounter Beck’s histrionics for the first time, the president’s numbers will benefit as well. To the uninitiated, the tea party crowd comes across like the barflies in “Star Wars.”

There is only one political opponent whom Obama really has to worry about at this moment: Hamid Karzai. It’s Afghanistan and joblessness, not the Stalinists of the right, that have the power to bring this president down.

Keep thinking that, Frank. Better yet, keep telling your readers that, for it's exactly this kind of cocky arrogance from liberal media elites like yourself that allowed conservatives to take back the House and the Senate in 1994.

One final comedic note from Rich:

This column has been updated from the version that appears in print to reflect the fact that Ms. Scozzafava suspended her campaign on Saturday morning.
How much would you pay to see what this idiotic column looked like BEFORE Scozzafava quit?

A leftist commenting on how

A leftist commenting on how "rightists" eat their own?  That's like a black hole calling the kettle black.  The ride on the Obama bus has been  b_u_m_p_y!

Palin and Beck are undisputed leaders of the Republican party?  This man's version of reality and command of the English language is rather suspect.

The WH's mild spat with FNC?  How about the WH's unprecedented spat with FNC?  I mean, I guess you could parallel the Nixon administration, but for some reason, leftists like Obama and Rich don't enjoy that comparison.

It's nice that Rich comments on alternate universes since his residency in one clearly qualifies him to write such rubbish in the real one.

"......The WH's mild spat

"......The WH's mild spat with FNC?  How about the WH's unprecedented
spat with FNC?  I mean, I guess you could parallel the Nixon
administration, but for some reason, leftists like Obama and Rich don't
enjoy that comparison......."

Well, Americans have forgotten about that one.  After all, it's over 3 weeks old.

"the Times' few conservative

"the Times' few conservative readers"

I don't believe that. I don't believe they have any.

Columns are allowed to be biased. I don't see the point of reporting bias in columns. You're just giving them free airplay. Who cares what some NYT columnist says. The kind of people that read Frank Rich were 'tards before they read this, and they're still 'tards now.

With columns and blogs, we should point out inconsistency and hypocrisy.

See this is really

See this is really funny:

"Makes you wonder if the Times has someone in the sports section that will tell New Yorkers the Yankees won the World Series no matter what happens on the field."

But then:

"Sadly, Rich was just getting warmed up"

showing that it gets to you. Despite our ability to make a joke about it, this constant pathetic crap gets to us. They have been doing this in a big way since Clinton taught them that it works: just bang out any old crap, and you are dominating the issue. It puts the opponent on the back foot. He's constantly dealing with the frustrating nature of your bullcrap, and not PUSHING HIS OWN AGENDA.

That's why I say - pointing out bias in columns and blogs doesn't achieve anything. Otherwise you're just making someone like Frank Rich more effective than they would otherwise be.

Bias in reporting, hypocrisy in opinion.

I don't think it "gets to"

I don't think it "gets to" Noel, or anyone else.

It's just fun pointing out how unhinged Rich is.

That's been a staple here at NB for quite some time.

It's really not fun. People

It's really not fun. People are rightly frustrated by the bare-faced lies; the left painting us as the very things they are.

All the time we're dealing with this, we're not pushing OUR agenda. It's the same with TV. With the constant barage of leftist talking points, people think that they are being discerning and disagreeing with it, but it's still dominating your world.

The pathetic leftism of the tiny minority should not dominate the American mind in the way that it does.

They sure don't have this

They sure don't have this one. I don't need Rich to lie to me either.

"the Times' few conservative readers"

Noel Sheppard is apparently one, for which I presume he gets hardship pay, but beyond that I don’t know of any.

- Relying upon the New Yor Times for your information is like relying upon an embezzler for your portfolio management.

- I didn't leave the Republican Party; the Republican Party left me.

a few pointers for Frank

1. Stalin was a Communist who believed that religion was the "opiate of the masses", so Sarah Palin is by definition the opposite of him.

2. Arlen Specter is the one who made Arlen Specter switch parties.

3. Beck is a Libertarian, not a Republican, so he isn't making the GOP do anything.

Either Way, He Doesn't Make The GOP Do Anything

Actually, I think Beck is more a Constitutionalist than a Libertarian, but I'm not sure how he describes himself.

If Palin is a Staninist

what is  Congresswoman Pelosi,  who writes 1900 page bills in secret. A woman who calls others Nazi's?

And Rich has the gaul to complain about the level of discourse.

Melting 'Snowe' sounds like

Melting 'Snowe' sounds like a great idea. Hopefully she's next.

If only we listen to Frank Rich....

Then the GOP would be a thriving and energetic party in power.   He only wants what's good for us.   His own newspaper is hanging on by  a thread but he has his finger on the pulse of what is good for conservatives.

What an ass clown.

" if Republicans are able to stop Barack Obama on health care, 'it will be his Waterloo, it will break him....-Sen. Jim DeMint

So Noel...

Shall we take from Frank that it's suddenly acceptable to call our politicians Stalin? I thought that was hyperbolic hate speech...

anything Frank says is

anything Frank says is sure winner if one does exact opposite of what he proposes..

A true conservative movment would return the country to life liberty and pursuit of happiness by individuals and remove all the burdens of a Managed socialized society. we could breathe again and not fight idiolouges and their new fancies on how everyone should live.

One final thing Frank..  Obama will destroy himself...he does not need any help..another 6 months of him proclaiming how great he is better bring the correct results or he's like a burnt toast.

Projection

"Frank Rich: Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Are 'Re-enacting Stalinism' "

That's the clearest case of the psychological phenomenon known as "projection" I have ever seen.  I am amazed at the lack of self awareness the average liberal seems to have.  There is something very, very wrong with them.

"The G.O.P. Stalinists Invade Upstate New York,"??????

Frank you do so much to support those who say that you were out of your league in the Arts & Leisure section, let alone the land of politics.  Actually I am really surprised that Frank did not use his normal strategy of seeing what Huffington Post had to say and then rewriting that as news.  Or are you using Media matters for your material now Frank?

I wonder if I am the only person who never ceased to wonder how Sarah Palin can be so out of the picture and yet so consistently part of the story.  You did manage to pull off that journalistic feat in your article.

Stalinists of the Right? Why that would qualify them to work at the New York Times would'nt it??

Stay Free!!!

A person may be won over with logic and reason but the masses must be bought with spectacle and platitudes. - 2008 Elections

Hey Frank------

Apparently, Frank Rich doesn't like people that have principles.  Ronald Reagan, for whatever you might want to say about him, had principles.  He wrote about his principles and acted on his principles.

The difference between a Sarah Palin purge and a Stalin purge, people are still living when it's over.  Scozzafava could end up analyzing her career and change her belief system a little and end up staying a Republican.  In Stalin's world, she'd be dead.

Wake up Frank.  The Stalin comparisons to our health care system are apt, the ones for Sarah Palin are a real stretch.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

"Stalinist" Republicans?

I have to wonder if Mr. Rich earned his journalistic credits writing for Pravda and Tass?

Why Does Rich Look Like Beckel's Clone??

Rich's drooling literally leaps out from the pages of Dr. Lyle Rossiter's book;

The Liberal Mind: Psychological Causes of Political Madness

"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,”“Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.” “A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity – as liberals do,” "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population – as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation’s citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state – as liberals do.”

“The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind,”

“When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious.”

. . . ready to march on Washington

Screw Mr. Rich. I'm tired of him and his kind. I'm ready to march on Washington with my pitchfork. Better yet, I'm ready to start a business selling pitchforks to all of my other normal red-blooded Americans who love this country and who are sick and tired--REPEAT--sick and tired of leftists, fascists working to destroy this country.   Obama needs to go.  Pelosi needs to go. All leflt-wing liberal whiners need to go. I have worked my ass off to get a good education (that I'm still paying for thank you very much), start a business, and make something of myself.  I have paid my way the entire time.  No one did anything for me.  No government handouts.  No shortcuts in line.  No favors.  No handouts period.  I pay my bills.  I meet my obligations.  I continue to work my ass off. I am sick, sick, sick and tired of folks thinking that they are owed something "just because."  Screw them.  I'm sick of it. If given a choice as to which person I'd choose for my basketball team, I'd choose Beck and Palin any day of the year--any day.
We conservatives are primed and ready to fight.   I am ready for revolution, and I'm just a simple attorney. Now, where's my bible and my gun.

NYT's slow descent to oblivion

Given the NYT is teetering on the edge of financial collapse and going out of business, maybe it's the liberal media that are 'the real losers'.

Monica has company...

Frank Rich is BO's Monica Lewinsky.  Frank afterall spends long hours at the White House in private with BO in the Oval office.  I am sure they are giving new meaning to the term Oval office also.

Does Frank have a blue suit that we should have tested.

I have heard that Frank is allowed to go past the guards carrying his fuscia knee pads.  Now we know why BO is always smiling when he walks out of the oval office.

Column suggestion for Rich

The New York Times has a columnist that actually gets paid to tell readers no matter what happens, Republicans lose.

Well, the NYT is something of an expert entity when it comes to losing.  It's losing ciruculation, advertisers, money, employees, public trust, peer trust, etc., etc., etc.

On the other hand it has made some dramatic increases in the number of people not reading the paper; the number of companies not taking out ads; it's debt; its severens payouts; its public detractors; its journalistic detractors; etc., etc., etc.

I guess it's all a case of "is the glass half empty, or is it half full"?

Perhaps Mister Rich can write a column explaining how the fall (or is it an increase) of the NYT bodes well for him and his industry.

I love this whole new

I love this whole new outlook the left uses to analyze failure...

"Obama losing the Olympics is actually a good thing for his presidency..."

"Snow in Malibu actually PROVES global warming..."

"A Republican winning an election over a democrat is actually a GOOD thing..."

Frank Rich is a career loser so he's an expert in this stuff...

Stick a smelly gym sock in Rich's mouth

I can't imagine anyone caring about not hearing this fool run his mouth any more

"Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you.  Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge."

Timothy 6:20

Why doesn't someone else write a column

That points out Frank Rich has zero credibility and should be taken less seriously than Pee Wee Herman on a drunken binge.

"Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you.  Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge."

Timothy 6:20

Keep it up!!

Keep it up Frank.....keep writing this garbage so the NY Times can go kaput and become a blog like the Huffington Post.

Stalin

meet mirror.

Isn't it funny how the members pf the party of the KKK all call others butchers. What, you didn't think the party of Lincoln formed the KKK did you?

I just posted my comment at

I just posted my comment at the NYTimes site, which is awaiting moderation. Somehow I don't think it will make the cut. Like the administration, Mr Rich brooks no dissent.

So, who's the "Stalinist" again?

Enemies List; fawning state run media; demonization of any opposition opinion; massive expansion of the state; absolute belief that government apparatchiks should run the lives of private citizens; two actual Mao lovers in your innner circle; plans for the governmet to "subsidize" newspapers; plans for the government to run the internet; more Kommiczars than the USSR.

That would be President Barack Obama. The dear leader. But in Frank Rich's looniverse, backing a political candidate who reflects one's conservative philosophy is "Stalinist."

More incoherent "thought" from Mr Rich. A very unserious person in serious times.

Don't forget... you can't spell OBAMA without the support of A MOB

Oh ... that's Rich!

Those are incredible words coming from a newspaper thats only hope to stay in business is a bailout from Obama's gang or Rupert Murdoch. Oh I'm sure Soros is in the toss, but, even George knows horse meat from Alpo.

Predictably odd is that Rich sees nothing wrong with extremists like Pelosi-Reid who are trying to push a bill without allowing time to carefully scrutinize their scheme. Nor Al Franken's DNC playbook shenanigans for yet another theft of "democracy". Nor does Rich seem the least bit troubled by Obama's incessant campaign war machine. If Barack Hussein Obama ran a country half as well as he ran a campaign ... a patriot can only dream. No I dare say, not only is Obama the first black president, he's on the road to becoming the worst black president. And you can quote me on that Frank!

If Frank Rich is looking for Stalinism, he need look no further

...than the Oval Office.

If he is seeking Stalinism's supporters and enablers, he need only look into the nearest mirror.

Personally, I don't think this moron has the foggiest clue what Stalinism actually is.

-Dave

Our elected representatives have failed us.

Hoffman pulling in independents.

It's amazing--if Rich or anyone else would bother to actually read, they'd see Hoffman is pulling a plurality of independents too.

Or how 'bout this quote from Siena's pollster......."Hoffman has picked up considerable steam with voters of virtually every demographic."

Hey, wait a minute, I thought this was just a bunch of angry "tea-baggers"!   That case will be a lot harder to make if the GOP wins in New Jersey.  But they'll try.

            TheN

TheN. Y. Times is a rag- mag, and Frank Rich is a puppet for obama. His opinion means nothing.

In these times, we need not worry about the democrats or the republicans. They are destroying themselves. Corruption doesn't care what party you belong to. Conservatives can become corrupt, too, but only if they follow the ways of the democrats & republicans. Follow the people, and you can repair the fraud & corruption that is washington.

Rich is right.  Beck and

Rich is right.  Beck and Palin have never overseen bank closures and record unemployment.  Only someone in public office can screw things up that badly by prolonging the situation with bail outs and Porkulus.

Why do I think that with a President Beck or a President Palin, failing banks and companies would have indeed gone under to be replaced rather quickly by competent ones, and employment would actually be going up by now?

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

→ RR

You think that because you believe, as do I, that:

  1. Market forces are efficient
  2. Nature abhors a vacuum and Obama sucks.

Mmm, mmm, mmm - Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

→Cool Arrow

LOL on point #2.

But as to point #1 too many folks believe that Capitalism is cruel and heartless in that they may lose their jobs, etc.  Of course, that is true, but without RINOs and Socialists dicking around with the system those people would be able to find new employment quickly and possibly even with better wages and benefits.  But the idea that THE GOVERNMENT can smooth out the rough times for them has been shown to be a red herring over and over and over again.

Another factor is the supply and demand involved with labor.  Less available labor leads to higher demand and higher wages.  The greedy losers who run this country allow unbridled illegal immigration, holding down wages because of a glut of labor.  In short, there is no need for a minimum wage, and I believe it actually holds down wages because bosses can shrug their shoulders and say, "Well, that's all the government says we have to pay you."

You start of with lousy jobs with lousy companies and move up as you gain more experience and wherewithal while the lousy companies you left go under. Or maybe you even start your own business.

Common sense says that this country and its capitalist system makes the streets here paved with gold.  That's why people risk their lives and leave everything behind to come here.  We live like kings compared to most of the people on the planet and shouldn't feel guilty about accomplishing what others could do if they weren't worse sheeple than us, got rid of their oppressors, and embraced Jeffersonian Democracy and Capitalism.

But, to export the things that work here elsewhere is "Fascism" and "Imperialism" because it doesn't fit in with the emotional ideologies of the academics and dramatists.

Unfortunately, it is the latter above running the show now.  This is accomplished because *gasp* Capitalism and Democracy aren't perfect nor ever will be.  Since when do we come to expect perfectionist Utopia?  Oh, that's right...since the Leftists who run all facets of mass communication and education have taught us so.

Poorly run companies who can't compete or don't sell what is needed/wanted going under is not an indictment of Capitalism...it is part and parcel of Capitalism.  That is what makes Capitalism work, and why Socialism fails, because Socialism will pound a square peg into a round hole for ideological and political purposes.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

RR GOP I recall last fall

When the market was in free fall that an anchor babe on CNBC (I never saw her before so I guess she was relatively new) was opining if the freefall of stock prices was the 'failure' of capitalism.  I thought at the time she was a twit and this was how capitalism is supposed to work. To attempt to smooth the bumps is meddling with forces that are hard contained and little understood even in these 'enlightened' times. More bump smoothing and pain mitigation is in the category of 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'. I also recall that folks who had been continually admonished about the possibility of losses when engaging in the trading of stocks immediately started whining for the government to do something when they lost their money or their shirts believing that they somehow were insured against loss.

"Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

Liberal = Child

The liberal rantings of Rich, Krugman, etc. reflect the ideology embraced by these out of touch demagogues. They do not reflect opinions based on the facts or even entertain the principles of what might be right for America. They seem to internalize everything in terms of the advantage for their Party, not what is right for the individual. In fact, most Americans would throw both Parties out of Congress and start anew. Rich’s lack of command of the facts allows him plausible deniability to reach his conclusions.  Complete drivel and funny, too. Thanks, Noel.

PS.  ag:  I agree – Revolution! Let’s hope 2010 is soon enough.

Frank Rich wouldn't know

Frank Rich wouldn't know Stalinism if it bit him where he sits.  It's a shame that ignorance isn't painful, because the fool would now be howling with pain as he grabbed a history book to ease the pain.  Comparing Republicans, especially conservative Republicans to Stalin ... only a libtard Democrat could do that with a straight face.  Sheesh!
