Numerous sources are reporting a meeting occurred Wednesday between high-ranking officials at the White House and the Fox News Channel to try and reach an end to hostilities between the Administration and the nation's leading cable news network.
With Fox's ratings soaring as a result of the incursion, and the White House looking more and more foolish, one has to wonder what the Adminstration could have offered to make this deal possible.
Unfortunately, such details aren't currently available besides what Mediaite reported Wednesday:
Mediaite has confirmed a meeting between Fox News and the White House took place today, and an FNC spokesperson emphasized it was private.
Details of the meeting and terms of any agreement are still emerging, but we hear the meeting was to come to a “truce” between both sides – a point first reported by FishbowlDC.
Mediaite hears the meeting was between FNC Senior Vice President Michael Clemente and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs in Gibbs’ office at the White House. Clemente then met with the FNC D.C. bureau.
I don't know about you, but even with the World Series going, and college and NFL football in full swing, nothing has been more fun to watch than the sparring between Obama's henchmen and Fox the past few weeks.

I love it.
October 28, 2009 - 22:59 ET by TexndocBoy, a two hours White House war room session with Keith Olbermann really paid off. I mean, it really did. Red Eye did a hilarious "on the scene" helicopter report of a speeding pick-up police chase saying "reportedly the driver is a "Keith Olbermann" who friends say is on his way back to DC to retrieve his forgotten Twister mat and baby oil".
Any doubts that Mr. Olbermann, up until FoxNews ratings went stratospheric for cable, that he was convinced they were going to destroy it because he had met with the Obambi?

October 29, 2009 - 10:17 ET by danybhoyI did see the Red Eye bit with the high speed police chase desribing the driver as Olby, & it was funny...
Not to ombuds TV's Andy Levy, but Olby almost never drives due to an accident he had in 1980. He was "leaping" onto a NYC subway & suffered a head injury. This lead to a partial loss of death perception, so he avoids getting behind the wheel. I'll leave the easy jokes about the lingering effects of his head injury alone. I've had my bell rung playing hockey, so I'm in no real position to throw stones on this one.

October 28, 2009 - 23:10 ET by rockyracoonMy guess is that the S0Bama administration doesn't want the Kool-ade drinkers wandering in and tuning in to FOX News and then possibly getting a clue to how their Messiah is giving the store away.

October 28, 2009 - 23:11 ET by TexndocI seriously doubt "our ratings are soaring so we'll take off Glenn Beck". Ten bucks it's Zero's boys "allowing" interviews so "their side" can "be heard, too." You know, the side that was afraid to be on the FoxNews Sunday show.

Exactly....
October 29, 2009 - 07:04 ET by ChupacabraThat was exactly what I thought when I read this. Why would Fox need to have a "private" meeting with the White House? When you find yourself completely dominating the dispute, you don't have to compromise or negotiate. You turn up the heat even higher and watch your opponent melt.

Tongue-In-Cheek
October 29, 2009 - 14:14 ET by miss911ninjaWhen Noel Sheppard wrote that the White House and Fox had a meeting "to try to reach an end to hostilities," I think it might have been tongue-in-cheek. Making fun of it as though it were on the scale of the Arab-Israeli conflict. And since the White House is the only party who has been "hostile," the use of the word "truce" might have been part of the joke, too.
Obama can't afford to ignore FOX as a resource
October 28, 2009 - 23:18 ET by RousseI doubt very much that FOX News would capitulate to any demands by the Obama administration. However, a rapprochement would benefit both parties. More than half of the country gets its news from FOX News, and Obama can't afford to ignore FOX as a resource.
Not sure this is much of a story so far
October 28, 2009 - 23:29 ET by Vivaldi5Any meeting held with that idiot Gibbs is, in my opinion inconsequential. It's very little different than if the FOX News Senior VP came in and the Obama-ites sat him down with the cleaning lady. (And rather less significant than if they had put the FOX VP together for a discussion with Bo, the Portugese Water Dog--who would likely be able to give more intelligent responses than Gibbs.)

The term truce isn't really
October 29, 2009 - 01:41 ET by kefkaThe term truce isn't really appropriate. Fox is just doing their job, not engaging in any hostile acts.
There was a deal... here are the facts:
October 29, 2009 - 01:47 ET by caiobabeDetails of this unusual truce have been tightlipped as to avoid embarassment to the White House but it seems that FOX may have got the better end of this deal. I have a friend with insider information who passed the secrets to me for a future Ruth's Criss dinner:
FOX News must agree to:
1. Glenn Beck has to wear a pink tutu printed with the 'Yes We Can' slogan while doing 20 hours of community service at the ACORN Chicago outlet.
2. Sean Hannity has to 'firmly assert' on his show that Obama is a "kicks ass" president and is a better man than Ronald Reagan ever was.
3. Bill O'Reilley must stop using Dennis Miller for 'off the wall' commentary', replacing him with on the street interviews from conservative downtown San Francisco reported by Keith Olbermann. Bill has to pretend he likes Keith for at least a month.
The White House and President Obama have promised to:
1. Reveal the liquor tab for those Wednesday night White House parties that Michele has been getting blitzed at.
2. Show Obama's Kenyan birth certificate.
3.Admit that the cosmetic make up blotch above Obama's forehead actually covers up an imprint of "666".

Maybe this is not a bad thing. The country will finally get a chance to see Olbermann on a show that actually has viewers. They will quickly tire of his schtick and he will slink off to oblivion.

October 29, 2009 - 06:53 ET by BondPlainBondBoth Sides?
Both sides? How can Fox News, a fair and balanced organization, take part in a truce when it was the entity attacked for no reason other than reporting the truth?
Buh-ukkin-loney.
The White House and its' Administration should be standing at the front door of Fox News with a couple dozen roses and a big, heart-shaped box of candy.
This is just what the Obama Administration gobbles up; acquiescence, appeasement, whatever you want to call it. Not thrilled.

October 29, 2009 - 07:34 ET by motherbeltThe money quote from Fishbowl DC:

The key word there is "remain." No grovelling that they were wrong and no promise to change.

No truce
October 29, 2009 - 07:37 ET by Blogger Guy00001There's no truce. These people never declare a truce. They have a goal and they will do anything and everything to reach it.

Been There...
October 29, 2009 - 09:21 ET by slickwillie2001I don't believe this. Recall there was a meeting last month, very hush-hush, between Murdoch and Axelrod in a closed restaurant in (?) NYC. That led to spec that there might be a truce, now obviously not so.
The two combatants might be taking a breather between rounds. The war will explode again the moment Fox News covers something the White House doesn't like or asks a tough question that no one else asks.

October 29, 2009 - 10:32 ET by Paul Gand so I see on AP I read, "Fox news channel, and Obama administration talking" and I read "The meeting came after Fox news anchor Shep smith apologized for a "lack of balance" following a political report where the Republican candidate for New Jersey govenor was interviewed and the Democratic incumbent wasn't". http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091029/ap_en_tv/us_tv_fox_apology_17
I know we all think Shep Smoth is a weanie, but he goes overboard here. I know FNC is "fair and balanced", but even the Fox correspondent said Corzine hadn't made himself available. Me thinks Shep should go over to CNN and fade into the dark and dismal 'king' of the cable news channel where he belongs.

October 29, 2009 - 11:11 ET by slickwillie2001Shemp's little snit-fit is really strange. It should have been obvious to anyone that the correspondent was unable to get a Corzine rep interview, and it was probably because of Fox News's blacklist. Here's another article with an embedded video:

Is it just me, or do others
October 29, 2009 - 10:39 ET by dcnormanIs it just me, or do others find it strangely troubling that a news network and an administration have to have some kind of a summit meeting to come to a "truce"? Is simple basic news coverage considered a war now?
Beware!
October 29, 2009 - 10:53 ET by Forbin001Meetings between fox and the white house. Hrm. Well then beware the government media complex!! I expect a softening of the coverage of the white house from Fox, but thats ok its their business and they can run it as they please.
But I dont watch fox religiously anyways, and this administration cant pull the wool over our eyes, did ya see the town halls this summer? We know the deal.

There is no truce.
November 2, 2009 - 23:45 ET by pbthinkerIf the White House really wanted a "truce" they would have had Rahm Emanuel in there. If Emanuel and Axelrod say there's a truce, there's a truce. I don't believe Robert Gibbs has the power. Any power he has in given to him by Emanuel and Axelrod.
This is just more smoke and mirrors so they can say Fox broke the truce, which wasn't there in the first place. Have you seen anyone report a truce? Of course not, that's so the White House can break it, accuse Fox of breaking it, and no one knows the terms so it's they said, they said.
