Almost like clockwork, on the very day Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will be introducing a new healthcare proposal which includes a government-run component, NBC and the Wall Street Journal will be releasing results of a new poll showing support for such a plan "at its highest level since the debate began."
This will make it perfect for the evening news programs to share details about the Democrats' bill as they convince viewers Americans are for it.
NBC's Mark Murray posted the following at the network's website moments ago:
Isn't THAT convenient?!?As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid moves forward crafting a Senate health-care bill that contains a public option -- with a state "opt out" -- the latest NBC/WSJ poll shows support for a government-run insurance plan at its highest level since the debate began.
According to the poll, 48% say they favor a public health plan administered by the federal government that would compete with private insurers, compared with 42% who oppose it. That's a shift from last month, though within the margin of error, when 48% opposed the public option and 46% supported it. And it's a 10-point swing from August, when 47% were in opposition and 43% were in favor. [...]
The full poll will be released on Nightly News, and MSNBC.com, beginning at 6:30 pm ET.

Polls be damned
October 27, 2009 - 13:18 ET by ThisnThatLieberman just announced he will vote against any bill with a public option. How does that fit into your poll, NBC?

What BS. HOW about asking
October 27, 2009 - 13:20 ET by MaximusBraveheartWhat BS. HOW about asking the people that will pay for THEIR policies? Since when did we sign up to pay for other peoples' insurance? It costs a lot paying for our own, plus huge medicare tax, so how will it cost less paying for even more peoples' care? I don't get care unless it is serious so you think it is going to lower the USAGE and thus cost when things are "free?" PISSED off! When did we sign up for this type of FREEDOM? It is tyranny!

October 27, 2009 - 13:35 ET by Chris NormanI think a lot of Americans, not just conservatives, take these polls with a pound of salt. They're all over the place, depending on who they poll and how the questions are asked. For instance, this poll might have been weighted heavily towards the members of the "We Love Obama and Nationalized Health Care Organization" and/or the question might have been framed as: "If you had to support a 'public option' or being shot, which would you choose?".

October 27, 2009 - 13:54 ET by ontheright...how can any of these pollsters get an accurately representative poll when those who they poll are at home?
Last time I checked, pollsters are not allowed to call places of business. Has that changed?
So, if they are only polling people who are at home during the day, how can that represent the rest of us who are at work earning taxes...er...a salary?
This just doesn't compute.

October 27, 2009 - 13:33 ET by mattmThey'll pass this BS. The GOP will buy the lie that they need to go moderate and 2010 will not change much.
Socialized medicine will result in earlier deaths, unnecessary deaths and a decline in overall health, but the networks will scare up a poll showing that most people love the new system...and in 40 years, when the U.S. is a 2nd rate social dictatorship with half the standard of living we had pre-2006, nobody will think to blame the libs and their idiotic policies.
And the sheeple will continue electing tyrants.

October 27, 2009 - 13:35 ET by tim413We have been letting Howard Dean, Keith Olberf--ka-s, Jack Ass, etc. quote polls saying 65%, 67%, 71%, etc. favor the public option. All of this was happening when polls said 55% did not want any form of ObamaCare. It seems to me that the proper poll questions are:
Yes to ObamaCare with a public option.
Yes to ObamaCare without a public option.
No to ObamaCare.
Then we would really know what the American people want.

Liberals are the only ones
October 27, 2009 - 13:45 ET by MaximusBraveheartGuess we should have known, liberals are the only ones that can form a concensus and then they can say the debate is over! Conservatives do not get this "right."
Even if greater than 50% support it, how is it legal to steal from the minority to give to the majority? Why can't I rob my neighbor to pay my rent and bills? Gee it is for a good cause! People need to pay for what they use! No free lunch like it is now. What incentive to even work??? M-B
The New Dem Strategy on Health Care Reform
October 27, 2009 - 13:36 ET by GalvanicRealizing how badly they bungled their message in the media this past summer, the White House has now taken a new approach on the matter:
Convince the public that the public option is what the majority of Americans want, and act as if its inclusion in the bill that Obama will sign is a fait acompli.
With the willing assistance of the MSM, the WH aims to end the debate altogether.
Other measures will include keeping the details of the bill secret until it's time to vote on it, and blitzing the Sunday morning talk shows with Obama, Emanuel, and company.
The idea is to demoralize the opponents of the bill, who they hope will then end their Tea Parties and just go away mad.
This should be the final
October 27, 2009 - 13:39 ET by SemusThis should be the final nail in the coffin, to dispell the myth that these poll are honest. This final push was planed with the news media in lock step, just as George Will said, it was manufactured and this is proof it was.

October 27, 2009 - 13:50 ET by c5thenA big jump in the "polls" (in the wanted direction) just in time. The supression of a news outlet that might air those who oppose (just at the perfect time). The police being called on reporters asking uncomfortable questions of candidates.

What Exactly Was The Question Asked?
October 27, 2009 - 14:40 ET by Gat New YorkAll you see is a result with a general description of what it refers to.
Was the actual question, "Do you favor a government run public option?" or was the question worded more obtusely to allow for whatever interpretation you want?

And on and on and, heck, you get the idea.
Every poll is suspect.
October 27, 2009 - 16:25 ET by CrashYes, even Fox. The problem with polls is that they always skew in the direction of the majority of the consensus. And can be controlled by the words used to form the question. I cannot tell you how many times I've taken a survey/poll where the answers were not appropriate to my conclusions, or beliefs.
It's called forcing. Magicians and mentalists do the same thing. For example the magician hands you a pack of cards and says, "I don't want to touch the deck at any time." He even rolled up his sleeves! Who handed you the cards?
