Do you think National Pubic Radio political editor Ken Rudin took some heat for comparing President Obama to Richard Nixon Wednesday?

Such seems to be the case given his somewhat groveling apology posted at his blog Thursday.

Before we get there, here's what Rudin said about the White House's current feud with Fox News on Wednesday's "Talk of the Nation" (h/t Byron York):

Well, it's not only aggressive, it's almost Nixonesque. I mean, you think of what Nixon and Agnew did with their enemies list and their attacks on the media; certainly Vice President Agnew's constant denunciation of the media. Of course, then it was a conservative president denouncing a liberal media, and of course, a lot of good liberals said, 'Oh, that's ridiculous. That's an infringement on the freedom of press.' And now you see a lot of liberals almost kind of applauding what the White House is doing to Fox News, which I think is distressing.

According to York, "Reaction from the NPR audience was negative, and within 24 hours, Rudin was in backtrack mode."

Apparently so, for here's what Rudin wrote Thursday:

I made a boneheaded mistake yesterday, during the Political Junkie segment on NPR's Talk of the Nation, one that I'd like to correct right away. [...]

I will tell you, that the Nixon "enemies list" is the first thing I thought of when the topic came up. And obviously, that's what was going through my mind during yesterday's conversation.

But comparing the tactics of the Nixon administration -- which bugged and intimidated and harrassed journalists -- to that of the Obama administration was foolish, facile, ridiculous and, ultimately, embarrassing to me. I should have known better and, in fact, I do know better. I was around during the Nixon years. I am fully cognizant of what they did and attempted to do.

I still think the Obama administration showed a childish, thin skin in its dealings with and reaction to Fox.

But childishness is a far cry from illegal and unconstitutional activities. And for that I apologize for a dumb comparison.

Wow. Foolish, facile, ridiculous and, ultimately, embarrassing.

Think he REALLY feels that way, or was bullied into it?

After all, just 48 minutes before his mea culpa was published, Media Matters' Eric Boehlert scolded Rudin.

But even more comical was Friday's response from NPR ombudsman Alicia Shepard:

Live radio is tricky. Some times reporters talking 'live' say things they instantly regret.

Hmmm. Why don't conservative talk radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Mark Levin receive such understanding when they say things they regret?

Regardless, Shepard was quite pleased with Rudin's apology:

While it was a dumb thing to say, I applaud Rudin for quickly apologizing. Journalists are going to make mistakes -- not intentionally but they will happen.

Yeah, and I bet all that pressure put upon Rudin made him come to his senses quite quickly.

Nice backbone there, Ken. Way to stand up for yourself.

I'm actually quite surprised

I'm actually quite surprised it took longer than 16 minutes...

→ Fuzzlenutter

Actually, it was 34 minutes, but there was an 18 minute gap.

Good one Cool Arrow! 18 min gap.  ;)

Kinda dates me that I got it though.

Memory Lane

Me too, since the name "Rosemary Woods" immediately popped into my head. Which isn't a bad sign, I guess!

Yeah,

That's what she said!

Nixon Analogy will Gain Traction

The Nixon analogy will gain traction over time.  For most of the leftist press it is fine for Obama to list Fox News as an enemy. Eventually some of their friends will ask too many questions -- most likely from a left wing perspective -- and also be considered enemies.

→ Yeah, Ken

It's not as though the Administration has the power to limit your salary or anything like that.

Progression of the disease

I am reminded of Peter Graves in the movie Airplane! While Leslie Nielsen describes the progression of disability, Peter Graves turns into a quivering mass of jello.

Rudin's spine must be made

Rudin's spine must be made of jello.

I hope I see the day that we have to stop helping fund NPR and all their ilk.

You don't call Messiah a child!

Apology #2 to follow?

And just what did we expect

And just what did we expect from national public radio? Integrity? Free thinking? Telling it like it is?

Nope. What we have, instead, is the goosestep; people afraid of their own words, knowing that if they somehow, sometime tell the truth -- or provide their opinion -- that someone is watching. Always watching. And correcting. And re-educating. Until the goosestep returns.

Respect

Now here is another liberal with convictions.

Not Yet

Rudin could have maintained his dignity if the apology included just one more word. He might have said that the Obama administration hasn't "bugged, intimidated, and harassed journalists"....YET. Because he was right about the Nixonian mindset.

Rudin should have apologized

for comparing Obama with Nixon.

Obama is worse and makes Nixon look like a choir boy.

Excellent point.

This was...

the polite apology, the rehearsed apology.

The real apology occured in a little used utility room down the hall from the NPR board room. The poor sap was on his knees pleading forgivness as one of Rahms thugs stood in the corner, rubber hose at the ready.

Girly Men

I was about to say that it must be terribly emasculating to be forced into an apology, until I remembered that lefty men are feminized to begin with.

Well...

Once he got home and found his wife and kids tied up, with socks held in their mouths with duct tape, he came to the spontaneous conclusion that accusing Obama of misconduct was not in his best interest.  And the apology was the least he could do.  That's what the nice man with the gun said, anyway.

Rudin's Wrong to be Right

Actually, Rudin was more right the first time, but of course, he works for NPR which cannot tolerate a dissenting voice among its on air talent.

Tolerance is a Leftist ideal that requires the Right to be tolerant of the Left, not the other way around. Because the Left is always right, their tolerance is implied, with no need to be proven. If the Right fails to be tolerant of the Left, they deserve to be left in the dust. Hence, the maltreatment of Fox.

But Rudin, thank the Universe, or Mother Gaia, came to his senses and repented, effusively and with humility. Yet, I would guess that an extra detail of watchers has been dispatched to keep an eye and ear open to what he does now, until it's clear his illness has passed.

When

I have wondered this for many years now; when will PBS and NPR grow up and quit being financed by tax dollars! If they end up having to run commercials then that is just too bad! We do not NEED a state sponsored TV and radio station. ( We already have have MSNBC ["real" news])

We need to have our Reps and Sens start cutting off many of these damn entitlements, etc. I did not mind paying taxes in the beginning towards NPR and PBS and made personal donations as well. (I absolutely hated Barney, Sesame street and Mr. Rogers but my kid loved the last two.)

And we need to quit paying for "the arts" as well. Let the service minded left be the "The arts" patrons! They seem to be so damn giving! I remember reading that in our last pres. election the Person (and spouse) who made the least amount of money donated the Most of their income to charitable orgs. And Obama and Biden were the bottom two!

It is proven time and time again that people take better care of people than our nat'l gov does!

My small rant of the nite

So correct

"It is proven time and time again that people take better care of people than our nat'l gov does! "

So true.

And all, IMHO, because of mankind's weakness when it comes to having too much political power.

Ours was never meant to be a "national" government, as you call it. It was meant to be a federal government, and a small servant to the states (see the 10th amendment).

We're so far off track, no legitemacy is due either "party". They both ignore the limits set out for them. They are not authorized to "run the country" or the world. Not even close.

Power corrupts and this can never change. Central power is absolute power, corrupts absolutely, and is disctinctly un-American, if the Constitution matters.

Sorry. My rant for the night. :-)

You bet he apologized. By

You bet he apologized. By the time Rahm and Axelrod stopped rapping him on the head for his "mistake", he didn't know what planet he was living on.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

savings

His early apology to "the one" saved a lot of taxpayers money by avoiding a long and costly visit to the re-education camps. Voluntary self re-education and censorship is the answer, comrades. sarc off.

wadda joke!

Looking at this picture of this arrogant narcissis clown....obama looks just exactly like that buffoon Mussolini!  head back jaw jutted out....both sickening morons in my opinion!!
