Geraldo Rivera on Thursday lambasted Lou Dobbs for the outspoken CNN host's views concerning illegal immigration.
Speaking at a luncheon sponsored by El Diario La Prensa NY, Rivera disgracefully said, "Lou Dobbs is almost single-handedly responsible for creating, for being the architect of the young-Latino-as-scapegoat for everything that ails this country."
Rivera also told the audience that he had spoken to his boss, and was assured Dobbs was not coming to Fox (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript):
One of the aspects of our reality in the United States now is the defamatory tone of the immigration debate and how that immigration debate has slandered an entire race of people. It has been reckless beyond imagining, it has been reckless in a way that is beyond precedent.
Wait a minute. Beyond precedent? Does Rivera have no recollection of slavery in America or the Holocaust in Germany? But I digress:
Lou Dobbs, a man who was an accomplished journalist, and who left to go and start his own venture in the digital media, having to do with space, I believe, and then came back to CNN, and nobody was watching his program. He discovered that one of the way to get people to watch was to make of the image of a young Latino trying to get into this country a profoundly negative icon. Lou Dobbs is almost single-handedly responsible for creating, for being the architect of the young-Latino-as-scapegoat for everything that ails this country. [...]
It has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my professional life to watch as a good portion of the American people began to listen and believe that immigrants were responsible for crime in this country, responsible for bringing terror to this country, responsible for stealing jobs, responsible for effecting in a very negative way the American way of life. [...]
It is something that we absolutely said, "No mas" during the election of 2008...It's why Obama is elected now. He is the first, I maintain, Latino president. He's the first brown president. Why? He could be, and he looks Puerto Rican. And the, and the, the point is he would not be president but for the Latino vote and the Latino vote was for the first time in my lifetime an expression of a community understanding its responsibilities, getting up, going to the polling place, and saying, "No mas."
Wow! Geraldo thinks Latinos got Obama elected. Unfortunately, the numbers dictate otherwise.
After all, Obama beat McCain by 8.5 million votes, but he "only" got about 4 million more Latino votes. By contrast, Obama got almost 15 million more African-American votes than McCain.
As such, claiming Latinos got Obama elected is absurd. But once again, I digress:
No more of these lies, no more of this slander, no more of this stereotyping. I can tell you proudly, when this man [Dobbs] was widely rumored to be coming to my network, I called my boss couple of weeks ago, and he said it's absolutely untrue. Lou Dobbs is not coming to Fox News. He belongs at CNN if they can justify his presence there that's their problem.Wow!

October 24, 2009 - 18:11 ET by winston smithIf there actually is an "anti-hispanic sentiment" in this country it has more to do with the increased crime, drugs, poverty and economic burden that accompanies illegal immigration from Mexico and the alliance of Democrats, the NEA-controlled Public school system, leftist, irredentist groups like La Rasa, their Marxist enablers and some corporations that are pushing bi-lingualism in the U.S.
Your average American would tell you that these are the things that gripe them about some Hispanic groups and the grim realities they have to deal with on a day to day basis caused by illegal imigration---- not Lou Dobbs, although Dobbs has been a fearless and articulate spokesman for the cause. I hope he continues to fight the good fight. Geraldo is just looking to create a scapegoat for his irrational tirades.
What grown-up cry baby Geraldo knows quite well but won't admit is that every group that ever immigrated to this country after the American Revolution learned to speak and use the English as their primary language. Why should it be any different for some Hispanics? Asking this question is not "anti-Hispanic"--- it's anti-leftist.

Blaming Lou Dobbs (one of the few voices of reason at CNN) for the animus in the country concerning the illegal alien problem is absurd...Geraldo is looking for someone on whom to vent his wrongfully placed (self)righteous indignation. And going to his boss for reasurrance that Dobb's wasn't coming to Fox was reprehensible...What business is that of his? Whether Dobbs was or ever will come to Fox is none of Geraldo's business. If I'd been his boss, that is exactly what I would have told him.

October 24, 2009 - 21:31 ET by ThatDudeY'know, I have to disagree with such sentiments. Dobbs is, on many fronts, conservative. While he would be an asset to FOX, he would also tip the network further to the right. I'd like to see FOX be fair and balanced with a decent amount of lefties who know how to think as well as the varying shades of conservatives. It's nice to have at least one voice on the other networks who isn't on the left. Tapper does it for ABC and Dobbs does it for CNN. That small bit of balance goes a long way in my opinion. If the execs were smart enough, they'd start balancing out their news rooms to better reflect the ideological POV of their audience and potential audience.

There is not an "Anti-Hispanic Sentiment in U.S.
October 24, 2009 - 19:56 ET by Gary HallThere's not an "Anti-Hispanic Sentiment in U.S."
There is an Anti-illegal Immigrant Sentiment in the U.S., just like most of the world has.
And sometimes, Geraldo, that sentiment will extend itself into angst over the cost of entitlements, lost jobs - especially for lower income legal immigrants, lower wages, higher taxes, higher crime rates, overcrowed jails, overcrowded and over-burdened schools, and lost environmental gains because of immigration led population growth (to quote the Father of Earth Day, the late Sen. Gaylor Nelson - " ..a profound failure in our nation's pursuit of environmental quality..)
Geraldo should know that any straight polling of the people in the U.S. will clearly show this to be the case.
Oh, P.S. How many people watch Lou Dobbs? Since polls consistently show that 75% of folks want to end illegal immigration - something is a miss here Geraldo in your thinking.. ya think? Perhaps Dobbs pushed the number from 74 to 75% - got a point there.

Illegal Aliens
October 24, 2009 - 20:00 ET by Delaware BobFirst, Geraldo Rivera cares a lot about illegal aliens. He wants amnesty for all of them, if you can believe that. He can't see that the illegal aliens are destroying this Country.
It's hard to believe that illegal aliens are destroying this Country and some are blind to this fact, including Eivera. Just look at all the problems. The census, count, don't count, crime, stolen identities, overcrowded schools, the American taxpayers paying for all the medical care these illegal aliens get for FREE. Should they be include in the healthcare bill, should they not? Why should they? They can get it for FREE! When is this going to STOP!
Illegal aliens have made America the dumping ground for all their illegal alien children, then we have to school them and give them free medical care.
http://www.youtube.c...
http://www.youtube.c...
I for one, am sick and tired of these illegal aliens snubbing their nose at our immigration laws and the many other laws of this Country. If our Federal Government can not ENFORCE our immigration laws, and get these illegal aliens out of this Country, then let the States do it! One way or another, an end has to come to this illegal immigration, and not with AMNESTY! Amnesty will only encourage more illegal aliens to invade our Country and reward those who broke our laws and raped the American taxpayer in many ways...depressing our wages, taking our jobs, overwhelming our schools with their ILLEGAL ALIEN children, driving without a license or car insurance, all the crime from stolen identities to rape, drugs and everything else.
How many Americans are out of work right now? 15 million? How many illegal aliens are in this Country right now? 20 million? Are all 20 million working? How about all the public housing these illegal aliens get at taxpayers expense, like obama's aunt?
http://www.kpho.com/...
I'm from Delaware, and I'm just so proud! We have 65,000 illegal aliens here in our small State and can you believe that the illegal aliens sent so much money out of Delaware that they built up a whole town and then some in Guatemala.
OH, hell, Let's give them all AMNESTY! Then we will no longer have to call them illegal aliens, and they will all work to build up America instead of every other Country. Wouldn't they? This will put and end to any more illegal aliens entering this Country. Or will it? Maybe three years from now we will have another 5 million illegal aliens and it will start all over AGAIN!...and soon our Country will be gone. Americans are having less children, while the illegal aliens are having 300,000 children a year, and the best part about this is, they are all paid for by the American Taxpayer, that's you and me. Are you happy now? Do you feel the pride?
Maybe it's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these illegal aliens. Maybe it's time for them get out of this Country and back in their own Country where they belong. When we get rid of the illegal aliens, we will get rid of all the problems that go with them. THAT IS A FACT!
Let's keep Lou Dobbs and get rid of Geraldo! He's what you call a real jerk.

October 24, 2009 - 22:27 ET by Jake6When I first heard the rumor about Dobbs coming to FOX I thought swapping him for Smith would be a good idea (I wouldn't have to switch channels at 1900). With Rivera spewing his normal garbage, it occurs to me that making this a twofer would be a bonus.
I don't recall Dobbs maligning those who come to this country legally. He has expressed little sympathy for those who come in illegally. Evidently, Rivera missed class when the definition of "illegal" was covered in law school.
To blame Dobbs for Anti-Hispanic sentiment in the U.S. seems just a tad over the top but then this is Rivera. Oh well.

October 25, 2009 - 00:13 ET by RESTLESS 1Rush is making young blacks the reason for everything that ails this country, Dobbs is making young hispanics the reason for everything that ails this country...blah, blah, blah.
Make up your mind lefties. Whos fault is it? Because it couldn't possibly be the fault of those that come here illeagally, or who abort half of their children, now could it?
Blame whitey is getting soooo old.

I turn off Fox when he is
October 25, 2009 - 00:37 ET by AlanaI turn off Fox when he is on.
I'm sick of people trying to act like illegal immigrants are the same as legal immigrants, and anyone who doesn't want to be overrun by illegals is "racist."
If that were true, we would be "racist" against legal immigrants, would we not? Yet we are a wonderful melting pot, and I'm tired of this slander.
Geraldo is a dolt. I feel sorry for his various wives.
Double jeopardy
October 25, 2009 - 00:48 ET by LindamaeShouldn't Rivera also take up the banner to cry out against the anti-semetic & anti-Israel comments being bandied about? Actually, he can speak out against both problems. Where are the anti-Hispanic comments? Does he mean coverage of crimes in which the criminal happens to be Hispanic? If so, then it is not anti-Hispanic but just reporting. Or crimes in which the criminal is illegally in the US? Or crimes in which the criminal happens to be Moslem? Roman Catholic? Jewish? Methodist? Blue eyed? Blond? Some facts of a story are important and some are not.
My grandparents came to America following the rules. I now teach a Citizenship class made up of immigrants who followed the rules to come here. They do not think illegals who come here should be given amnesty - rules are rules. They also have pointed it out that it is very difficult to become a naturalized citizen in many of their countries. The US is a rare country which has a pathway to become a citizen. There is pride in them that they have elected to take the path to become citizens and anger that others are not and yet may be able to get for free what they have had to work for.
If Dobbs has pointed out the dangers brought to the US by those who have broken rules to get here and continue to break rules while here, then he is reporting - and that is his job.
We have been asked to become so politically correct that we must put on blinders so we not see what is happening. That is foolish and dangerous. We are in a mess and I don't think grandstanding will solve the problem. Well, ratings are ratings. What more can I say?
Hysterical!
October 25, 2009 - 02:36 ET by PJManHysterical is a word to describe geraldo's lunacy, he slams Michele, and she wants a full apology from the factor and get's none, no longer on bill's show by her own accord, right on, and I had to stop watching in support of her for a few weeks, but when the blatant racest geraldo is on it's time to switch channels, as for Lou, lets see, married a Mexican gal, invited her parents to live with them legally, all for legal immigration, a patriot in every sense of the word, "must be a right wing Notzie", but it does trouble me IF, he did say that about John Stossel, geraldo on the other hand, a self important character in his own mind, has to interject himself with his own and others stories, registurd republican, why? maybe to vote for the worst candidate in the primaries? why else? At least Lamont Hill was what he was, and really didn't try to hide it, Come over to the light Lou, and with hope and prayers, geraldo will fade away! Amen.
"most frustrating experience of my professional life"
October 25, 2009 - 05:50 ET by jdlybrandActually Gerry; that would have to be the one hour 'Al Capone's Vault' special you did years ago when you kept finding walls behind walls. Or the time the guy broke your nose with a chair.

With a chair?
October 25, 2009 - 08:49 ET by CO2MakerWas he on Jerry Springer?
he had his own show
October 25, 2009 - 09:28 ET by jon_torlinHe did an episode, touted as a special and it was about, funnily enough, racism, and it had the token skinheads and token blacks and at one point, it got out of control, fights broke out, Geraldo got smacked on the nose with a chair and broke it(something like that could have killed him, sending bone fragments to his head).
Kinda his claim to fame these days.

October 25, 2009 - 07:51 ET by CrashGerald Rivers is a joke amongst latinos.
Shame on Gerald for trying to make villains out of citizens and public servants who protect and honor the laws of this constitutional republic.
It's bad enough that the current administration is dragging us into a third world cesspool. When the DHS secretary issues an order to toss a monkey wrench into the teeth of law enforcement, facilitating the ability to break our laws. Why not an out & out tax revolt too? It too is a "law" made by congress. Why should anybody take it seriously? Either enforce our current immigration laws, or change them.
Rivera 0n Race
October 25, 2009 - 10:46 ET by iveseenitallRivera = Race/ Race = Rivera. He's blinded by his race--which makes him a poor "jounalist". He really should go to Univision--or maybe he should retire altogether and become a community organizer.

October 25, 2009 - 17:28 ET by MikeBYou need to modify your proposal to: "I will give Geraldo a million dollars for every single 'undocumented alien' he can name that has not committed a crime, if he will give me one dollar for every 'undocumented alien' I can name that has committed a crime."
He would owe you and estimated 8 to 12 million dollars. ;-)
edit: If he goes for this, would you share with me? I can use the $.

jaywalking is not a felony...
October 25, 2009 - 22:00 ET by konoAnd being in the U.S. without proper authority (or documents to show it) is not a crime.
I'm not defending it, by any means. But it's technically a violation of a civil statute, not a criminal statute. So the legal severity of that transgression is similar to that of a speeding ticket.
I still want illegal entry (as well as over-staying one's temporary visa) to be stopped, and the quotas of legal immigrants to be reduced to pre-1993 levels. And I want the gubm'nt to use physical fences and walls, if necessary, to enforce the border. (As opposed to that hokey 'virtual border'...) But I've stopped referring to illegal aliens as 'criminals', because although many of them commit crimes while they're here, the simple fact that they're here isn't itself a criminal violation.
Geraldo is the biggest sanctimonious tool on TV
October 25, 2009 - 11:32 ET by Jack BauerI happened to turn on the TV yesterday just as the excerable Geraldo was launching into a despicable rant about the parents of a seven year old girl who had been hideously murdered on her way home from school.
Apparently it was their fault this poor girl was murdered because they had allowed their daughter to walk home from school.
Her wrecked little body isn't even buried yet -- an agonizing torment her parents are going to have to face. And they may hear about this being said about them.
I know it's wasted sentiment but I think I despise that tool Geraldo with a passion.
dangerously foolish
October 25, 2009 - 21:48 ET by konoAfter Geraldo stupidly scratched troop-location diagrams in the dirt in front of the live TV camera during the invasion of Iraq (when he was embedded with an attack unit), I swore that IF the troops let him live, he'd never have me as a viewer.
G.R. is a showman (and not a great one, at that). I can't fathom why networks want to treat him as if he were a newsman. It's like treating a chihuahua as if it were a clydesdale horse.
