Is there no depth MSNBC's Chris Matthews won't sink to?
Judging from a truly disgraceful comment he made on Thursday's "Hardball," the answer has got to be a resounding "NO!"
Chatting with guests Frank Gaffney and Ron Reagan Jr. about conditions in Afghanistan, Matthews ended a really heated discussion between his guests -- which included the former scolding, "Your father would be ashamed of you," and the latter responding, "You better watch your mouth about that" -- by disgustingly saying (video embedded below the fold, h/t NB reader Kirk Wikoff):
CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Gentlemen, one of the great ironies of American politics is the group in this country...
FRANK GAFFNEY, CENTER FOR SECURITY POLICY: Your father would be ashamed of you.
RON REAGAN JR, AIR AMERICA RADIO.: Oh, Frank, you better watch your mouth about that, Frank.
MATTHEWS: That's not fair. The group in this country that most resembles the Taliban, ironically, is the religious right.
To that, Gaffney marvelously responded, "Rubbish."

October 22, 2009 - 23:49 ET by upcountrywater"The child, completely naked, is made to sit on a low stool. Several
women take hold of her and open her legs wide. After separating her
outer and inner lips, the operator, usually a woman experienced in this
procedure, sits down facing the child. With her kitchen knife the
operator first pierces and slices open the hood of the clitoris. Then
she begins to cut it out. While another woman wipes off the blood with
a rag, the operator digs with her sharp fingernail a hole the length of
the clitoris to detach and pull out the organ. The little girl, held
down by the women helpers, screams in extreme pain; but no one pays the
slightest attention. The operator finishes this job by entirely pulling
out the clitoris, cutting it to the bone with her knife. Her helpers
again wipe off the spurting blood with a rag. The operator then removes
the remaining flesh, digging with her finger to remove any remnant of
the clitoris among the flowing blood. The neighbor women are then
invited to plunge their fingers into the bloody hole to verify that
every piece of the clitoris is removed."

Lots of liberals scare me. Obama politics of personal destruction, what was done to Joe the plumber, what was done to Rush, what was done to Beck scare me a great deal.

The distinction
October 23, 2009 - 07:58 ET by KC MulvilleI hear you, RD. But compare what you said "There are some "religious" people in this country who claim to be followers of Christ..." to what Matthews said: "The group in this country that most resembles the Taliban, ironically, is the religious right."
You made a distinction between the individuals and the group. Matthews tried to associate the Right with the Taliban based on the behavior of some individuals.
Logic forbids you to attribute an individual attribute to the entire group. If you meet a rude criminal in Manhattan, that doesn't mean that everyone in New York is crude and a criminal. That's the fallacy that Matthews uses to denigrate the Right. You simply made an observation about individuals ... nothing fallacious about that.

If it weren't for such disgusting gems such as this, that happen to occur on a regular basis, I would propose a moratorium on MSNBC blogs at Newsbusters. It was fun, but after reading the Shuster blog below it dawned on me that these guys have been parroting the same lame moveon.org slogans for as long as I can remember. It is obviously boring even their target kook left demographic as indicated by the ratings.
Let me just save us some trouble for the next week of programming at MSNBC:
Shuster and Tamron compete to see who is most ignorant
Chris Mathews makes an ass out of himself
Olbermann tries to sound witty while bashing Bush and mindlessly repeating whatever the Obama administration has fed him today

October 22, 2009 - 20:44 ET by FlashmanMATTHEWS: That's not fair. The group in this country that most resembles the Taliban, ironically, is the religious right.
I think the transcription is incorrect here and that when Matthews is referring to the religious right he meant the Religious Wright, as in the Reverend Wright whose preaching “Gad damn America” exactly mirrors the prayers of the Taliban.
Give Chrissy A Break!!
October 22, 2009 - 20:49 ET by srqvetThis is quite clearly a scheduling error on Chrissy's part. You see, it's NEXT week the media is suppose to go after conservatives as "Taliban" replacing the ever popular moniker of "Racist". Chrissy was simply reading from the wrong week on his official WH issued Schedule of Smears.
In a normal world that
October 22, 2009 - 21:21 ET by buddycIn a normal world that comment should get Matthews fired. Yes the religious right and the Taliban are religious and to different degrees extreme. But when the religious right delcares war on non christians or sinners, burns down stip clubs, burns down libraries, attacks pornographers and trains 20,000 +-terrorists per year to attack and kill the enemy then perhaps the comparison would make sense. Right know it is nothing more than a pure and simply assinie comment and hate crime.
Okay...If Tingles wants to play that game, fine...
October 22, 2009 - 21:19 ET by PrairieSkyI'll play...If the Religious Right in this country is the group that most resembles the Taliban, then the Liberal Left in this country is the group that most resembles the fascist Nazis of World War II, and the Soviet Union's Communists of World War II and the Cold War...I wonder what Chrissy would say about that.
Matthews is certifiable, and his whole premise is BS...And, that pansy-ass Ron Reagan, with his "...you better watch your mouth about that, Frank" fake machismo, would get his butt beat by Gaffney. Gaffney's right...President Reagan would be (and probably was) ashamed of Ron Jr...He's pathetic, and it still amazes me that "Jr" is his son, and that Patti is his daughter.

October 23, 2009 - 00:12 ET by B-townGiantBy all means, correct me if I am wrong, but Little Ronnie kept his liberal side to himself (unlike Patti) until after his father could no longer tell what day of the week it was. It was only then he began to put himself out there as a "liberal commentator" for the world to see.
After the Great Communicator went to his reward with the Father, Little Ronnie no longer felt any constraint to keep his stupid f***ing mouth shut.
He is an embarrassment to his saintly mother, and should be forced to change his last name.

In my city, 4 out of the 5 food banks are run by churches. There are free health clinics run by churches. The homeless shelters are run by churches. Most who identify themselves as Christians perform their good works quietly and behind the scenes without any fanfare. Yes, there are kooks in every group but they are the extreme minority. I am not a believer, but I am a witness. In over 40 years of observing, I have seen more goodness and kindness come from these people than out of any talking head in the media.
