Obama's FCC Diversity Czar Complained About White-Dominated Media in 2005

In 2005, President Obama's current chief diversity officer for the Federal Communications Commission, at the time a representative of the liberal think tank the Center for American Progress, said that fundamental policy changes must be made to white-dominated media in order to solve the problems society faces.

Speaking as a part of the National Radio Project on May 11, 2005, Mark Lloyd said that white Americans are "in a very protected position vis a vis broadcast stations."

In his view, "As a result of this, we end up in a situation where we don't know the problems and challenges that a variety of the communities living in the United States face" (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript, h/t Story Balloon):

Well, all media in this country, but particularly broadcast media, was established at a time when all non-white Americans, and actually most women had very few protected legal rights in this country. As a result of that, various policies were developed that put essentially white Americans in a very protected position vis a vis broadcast stations. White Americans own and control 98 percent of all federal licenses to all broadcast operations in the United States. If this were South Africa, if this were any other country, and you saw roughly a third of the population licensed to two percent of the resources, that we would be shocked and dismayed and quite concerned about that situation. But, again, that is the situation in the United States.

It is not because there are, I don't think, deliberate policies in place now. It's because historical patterns have established this incredible inequality in the ability to communicate messages, again, among ourselves and other Americans. As a result of this, we end up in a situation where we don't know the problems and challenges that a variety of the communities living in the United States face. [...]

If we don't understand how important media is, we cannot solve any other problem the society faces. And that means changing policies so that we can get more views on the air, so that not one interest is able to dominate our discussion in the United States...The problem with media, it really takes changing the fundamental rules.

Wow. This man has an official position at the FCC?

I'd say the reason you

I'd say the reason you don't see a lot African Americans holding those licenses is because they don't see a profit in them.  There's BET, and Ebony, and other black media.  I haven't researched it but I'm sure Will Smith, Tyler Perry, and other black artsists have their own production companies and there are certainly black record labels.  You can't just put African Americans into an industry because you think they should be there.   They need to go into it because they see a profit in it, and can make a go of it.

This administration refuses to be post racial, everything is about race to them.

All of it.  "Social"

All of it.  "Social" justice simply is another way they mean "racial" justice.  Obama and the liberals are all about race.  Pitting groups against each other.

People claiming to hate discrimination, promote it, via hiring preferences and the guise of "diversity."  The same people will tell you that a "minority only" hiring situation is ok but a "no minorities" hiring situation is racist.  I've had a black liberal tell me exactly that, and she sees no flaw in her answers whatsoever.  To her, it's not even two wrongs (past discrimination being one) making a right, because she (and many others) don't see the social justice discrimination as discrimination at all.  It's a real brainwashing that has taken place.

Think of the hypocrisy in government.  They put anti-discrimination laws in place, yet they're the biggest perpetrators of the very thing that is illegal anywhere else - illegal via laws put in place by that government.  They will fine or jail you for doing it............and you'll be put into a govt run jail that likely uses discriminatory practices in hiring the people that will march you to your cell, which you will be in due to your discriminatory behavior that they tell you is illegal.

What's behind all this?

Greg, great observations.

There are at least five fundamental distinctions that must be made to  counter the tidal wave of attacks which those in power are mounting against the existing representatives and advocates of our Constitutional republic, as follows.

It is useless to expect an argument or debate about any specific law or issue, as they cannot argue from reality or fact.

Justice is defined by whoever makes the rules and whoever has the power to enforce them, if it is not based on absolute truth.  Relative truth results in relative justice.

The big losers in a "social" justice, or "racial" justice system, are the capable and responsible individuals being "protected" and advanced because of what "community" they are assigned to, and not based on their God-given talents, abilities and efforts.

We can never ignore the fact that the reigning strategies of those currently in power, in the current political battles, are almost totally those of Alinsky-trained or influenced individuals implementing his "Rules for Radicals".  Some of them, paraphrased, are:  Destroy from within.  Seek, create, produce, and foster chaotic conditions.  Their primary goal is to tear down existing power structures and replace them with their own power structures.

Nothing they say means what it would normally mean, and nothing they say can be taken at face value.  The only thing they understand is superior power.

If we are not realistic and completely sober about the type of attacks which are being launched against those who continue to state the truth, we can neither defend ourselves effectively or construct effective strategies to regain what we have already lost, much less what we stand to lose in the future.

It is perfectly transparent and chilling to understand the true purpose of the proposed regulations the FCC czar speaks of.

There is NO scientific evidence for "anthropogenic" Global Warming.  NONE.

A value system cannot and does not exist without a value giver.  Who ya gonna call, baby?

It's quite obvious who the

It's quite obvious who the racist ones are-the ones who are always saying someone else is racist. By the way, there are too many black basketball players. I demand a quota to put more white guys in. How about a certain percentage of white guys on the floor at all times? That's the same idiocy as this guy is spouting.

DISAGREE!  Going down this path leads to politicization of speech, censorsip and worse.  If Mark really cares so much, get Obama to create some tax credits for urban radio but don't you DARE put limits on speech! Every story like this reminds me as a libertarian why the threat of statism and "fascism-lite" comes from the Left, not the Right.

Can't agree on tax credits

Can't agree on tax credits for urban radio.  If they can't make a go of it without special treatment they shouldn't be in the industry.

And much like the oft-repeated axiom on money, when they say it's not about race . . . It's about race.

Obama is proving to America that elections have consequences.  Time to pay up.

As someone who works in broadcasting...

...now is a lousy time to get into broadcasting.  However, I can guarandamntee you that Mr. Lloyd won't a let silly thing like price stand in his way.  I'm certain that he would love to arrange it where stations would have their licenses yanked for whatever viloations they could find and then offer them to the lowest minority bidder.  You know, for diversity's sake  .

20 Years of Palling Around With Rev J. Wright

This is the thinking of the people that the Obama administration puts into positions of power.

Obama may have thrown Rev J. Wright under the bus, but it has been clear from the gitgo that Obama has not thrown Rev J. Wright's ideas under the bus.

Lest we forget it is the ideas of a person that live on long after that person has left this world.  Rev.  J. Wright's and Frank Marshall Davis who mentored Obama in Hawaii it is their black liberation and black power ideologies that live in Obama's brain and actions and that is what America needs to understand.  Of course they should have understood this last November but the MSM was too busy being synchophants to Obama to bother to inform America about the truths regarding Obama.

it is all about

The Obama administration promoting a pro racist agenda. Look out MSNBC they want to take you company and give it to someone else either ethnic or a female.

FCC Diversity

One of my local AM talk stations went into hiding last week.  I am sure it was because they want to avoid trying to conform to whatever policy comes down from the Commisar of Broadcasting.

Believe it or not they had a week of all disco music.  I kid you not.  This Monday they announced their big news for the "new" format, classic country.  As much as I like Merle, Johnny and George, I'd rather be listening to Laura, Medved and John Gibson.

Gun Control - The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

Predictable

As I told my graduate students 15+ years ago, it is good that we have these folks (liberal and conservative extremists) on the fringes to keep the rest of us honest.  But heaven help us if they ever get in power!

Hey I have an idea

Let's fire the losers at PMSNBC and hire back blacks.

Blacks have a lot of influence in the culture

The most powerful woman in broadcasting is a black woman, namely Oprah Winfrey.  She could probably buy many of the existing radio networks if she chose to, or could launch her own.  Some of the most powerful actors and musicians in America are black.  Many sports are dominated by black athletes to the point that a movie could be titled "White Men Can't Jump".  So it's hard to argue that blacks don't have an influence in the culture just because they're underrepresented in one medium.  Lloyd is using race as a cover to silence opinion he doesn't like.
