CNN and Campbell Brown must be awfully proud of themselves.
After all, Brown's prime time television program which airs at 8PM ET is getting fewer viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 than Fox New's "Red Eye."
Here's the punch line: "Red Eye" is on at 3AM when most people in the country are asleep.
As reported by Mediaite Tuesday (h/t Hot Air headlines):
Fox News’ 3amET comedy/news hybrid Red Eye is in a league of its own when it comes to cable news shows. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a player in the ratings.
Despite its late (or early, depending on your sleep habits) start time, the ratings for the show continue to improve, and surprisingly, top some cable news competition you might not expect. [...]
Red Eye averaged 432,000 total viewers and 202,000 in the demo. Let’s deal with the demo first – CNN’s 8pmET show, hosted by Campbell Brown, averaged 191,000 in the demo. Let’s just let that one sink in – Fox News had more people in the all important A25-54 demographic watching their channel at three in the morning (east coast time) than CNN had for the show that leads off their prime time. This says as much about Fox News as it does about CNN. Wow.
In total viewers (and demo), Red Eye beat the cable news competition three hours later. All three other morning shows, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, CNN’s American Morning and HLN’s Morning Express had less viewers in September.
Yes, 202,000 demo viewers is very respectable on cable. Consider that on Thursday, the following programs DIDN'T attract that many viewers 25-54:
Morning programs (6:00AM-9:00AM) P2+ (25-54) (35-64)
American Morning- 362,000 viewers (138,000) (203,000)
Morning Joe- 335,000 viewers (116,000) (177,000)
Squawk Box- 126,000 viewers (63,000) (86,000)
Morning Express w/ Meade- 255,000 viewers (157,000) (154,000)5PM - P2+ (25-54) (35-64)
Situation Room-657,000 viewers (156,000) (210,000)
Hardball w/ Chris Matthews-576,000 viewers (121,000) (248,000)
Fast Money-310,000 viewers (98,000) (129,000)
Prime News-301,000 viewers (116,000) (149,000)6PM - P2+ (25-54) (35-64)

Lou Dobbs Tonight-707,000 viewers (170,000) (256,000)
Kudlow Report -144,000 viewers (a scratch w/50,000) (54,000)
Issues- 411,000 viewers (170,000) (258,000)8PM - P2+ (25-54) (35-64)
Campbell Brown - 767,000 viewers (197,000) (347,000)
New Age of Wal-Mart (8:00-8:30) - a scratch w/114,000 viewers (a scratch w/44,000) (a scratch w/46,000)

How do they stay in business?
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 11:37 ET by richb313I think the numbers here at News Busters probably beat CNN and MSNBC. If not then it is probably close. How can these operations stay in business with numbers like these?

Tue, 10/06/2009 - 11:49 ET by Delsawatch it on weekends.
It is funny and thought provoking!
If it was on opposite any late night show on CBS,NBC, or ABC it would RUN AWAY with the Ratings.
I would suggest the above as well as keeping it on Fox News Channel as well.

Also, Red Eye is broadcast at 3:00 PM on planet unicorn due to the the time zone difference. Big big big ratings on planet unicorn.

Tragic CNN
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 12:16 ET by slickwillie2001In a business sense, the collapse of CNN is tragic and inexplicable. They are long past the time when a turnaround expert should have been brought in to make big changes, hire and fire, reformat, etc. Yet they appear to have done nothing. The same jokers are on the air and in charge. What's wrong with them there? Are they trying to destroy the corporation? Why aren't Time-Warner stockholders staging a revolt?
THIS IS CNN...
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 13:07 ET by danybhoyI think a couple of things happened...
First off, the merger of Time Warner with AOL was a bad thing. The people who ended up in charge of CNN are idiots. They have run it into the ground.
Second, they could'nt deal with compitition. MSNBC & of course, FoxNews. They both suck, & they are beating each other up for a shrinking viewership while FNC's numbers grow.

Red Eye
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 14:12 ET by BlondeThe thing I like about it is that they get really good guests. I love to see Ann Coulter, Andrew Brietbart, and particularly Megyn Kelly (and a host of other conservatives) in the free-flow environment of the show.
They can be really entertaining, while making good points, and apparently, having LOTS of fun.
I don't record it, but occasionally am up at that time of night.

SE Cupp is very funny and right on.
But Jim Norton is my fave comic. And Oderus Urungus from the band GWAR is hil-frackinarious.
The painfully unfunniest guest who didn't "get" Red Eye was William H. Macy. What a pompous jerk.

In regards to Norton and SE Cupp -ditto and ditto. By the way, I can't remember ever seeing SE Cupp anywhere but Fox News - in person or writing - although I had heard her name. I'm glad O'Reilly hasn't had the chance to disrespect her opinions.

JACK BAUER...
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 16:38 ET by danybhoyWhat I find funny is that they will have Father Jonathan Morris on the same show with Oderus Urnugus. They put guests together that seem to have ZERO in common with each other from very different sections of the population & let them go. That's why RedEye is maybe my favorite show.
BTW, I think I will be going to see GWAR in Minneapolis next Monday (10/12)at First Avenue. Do a video search for "Gwar live", their stageshow is, well, interesting...I'm amazed they have been around 25 years.

Tue, 10/06/2009 - 15:11 ET by Chris NormanBlonde,
The best time to watch it is on the weekends, where I'm guessing it's on at 12:00 AM in your time zone (10:00 PM here). His guests are getting better and wittier. Originally, they were a little on the esoteric side - for example Mike Baker (ex-CIA agent) and some ex-British soldier (they're still on occasionally). It was like he got an strange group of his friends in, which sometimes made it feel like the viewer was eavesdropping on a private get together - they were all pleasant enough but didn't produce many laughs (at least not from me). I think, with some of the newer guests, the dialogue and exchanges have become sharper and wittier. Andy Levy is hilarious - although I still don't get the "TV's Andy Levy" introduction.

Tue, 10/06/2009 - 14:42 ET by ConservativeRexI am fortunate that I get to watch Red Eye when I am working the night shift. I have even convinced some hard core union Obama supporters to watch it and even they get laughing over it. And I am talking hard core Obama supporters. I think it is repeated on the weekend at an earlier time slot, but I can't remember.

Red Eye On at 3:00 AM? Depends on the Time Zone
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 16:05 ET by John Galt1776In CA Redeye is on during the week at Midnight. This means that for the first half hour it goes head to head with Letterman, Leno and Kimmel.
On Sat and Sun it is on at 9:00 PM in CA.
I think this story is dumb
P.S. Red Eye and Gutfeld are entertaining.
I even enjoy the liberals on this show
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 16:05 ET by iiiireaderBecause they get challenged in a friendly way and have to put up or shut up.
We found Red Eye during the election cycle last year (read the Daily Gut on line and followed it to the show.) We've watched it ever since. Thank God for DVR! We're seeing it a day late but I like to end my evening with a laugh, so we watch it just before bed the day after.
One of my favorite on-going jokes is Greg's mis-references to countries, as well as musicians, their songs, and their bands.
It's a great way to get 20somethings interested in current events - my daughter will actually sit and watch this with us - and then ask questions about the topics.

I don't watch either show
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 16:06 ET by frankmerI don't watch either show so I'm not trying to defend anything here, but there's this tendency among rightwingers to believe that ratings somehow translate into shows being accurate or good sources for information. All of those shows are bunk. But the entire Fox lineup of shows is so clearly biased and agenda-based. The truely sad part is that they seem to be quite proud of that and even flaunt it.
I realize that the purpose of this website is all about the non-existent liberal media conspiracy, but come on. Does anyone really think that right wing networks like Fox News are somehow unbiased or accurate sources of information?

I'm throwing the B***S*** flag and assessing a 15 yard penalty for that statement. How you've managed to hang here for 3 years without two consecutive neuron firings I'll never know. Yesterday's article here "Only One in Ten Have Great Trust in Media" and its accompanying links show that nearly twice as many people have "no trust" in the media as have "a great deal of trust". (18% to 10%) Also, there is a consisten 3 to 1 margin of the population that believe the media is too liberal as compared to those who believe the media is too conservative. The population has perceived the media as too liberal for at least the past 9 years.
Has anyone ever seen frankmer and Keith Olbermann in the same room at the same time? Kind of makes me wonder.

Missing the Point
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 18:03 ET by AvitarWhat are the forces that keep mindless liberal drivel on television at 8PM when the American people have proven that they will watch an alternative at 3AM? Specialty shows like Mad Money can be understood but when the diamonds lie on the groud to be picked up by any programer willing do do so why don't they? Instead the token moderates from the assorted networks keep migrating to FOX. John Stossel did how many years at ABC? Now he is at FOX. Glenn Beck did years in off hours programs when he could have gone head to head wiith O'Rielly.
The same thing also is happening in the entertainment divisions. Why does material that people don't want to watch get prime time slots. Again I ask why? Is it gay media buyers in New York dictating programming the rest of America hates?
The programmers also think
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 18:07 ET by Radical1979The programmers also think we don't know what is good for us, or what we want to watch. so they'll keep putting on garbage they want people to like and agree with, versus, what we actually want to watch. Which is why television is dying.
Red Eye's a good show, but
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 22:53 ET by RR GOPRed Eye's a good show, but I just can't stay up that late to watch it, and DVRing it and watching it when the sun's shining just isn't the same somehow and in the early evening I'm watching BOR, Hannity and/or DVR'ed Beck...or snoozing.
Wish it came on right after Greta...oh, and if anyone from Fox News is watching, can you all pleeeez get Shep off of the seven o'clock slot and put Glenn Beck in instead?
