On September 25, NewsBusters asked, "Will SNL take off the gloves and set its sights on the suddenly stumbling, bumbling President?"
On October 3, we got our answer, for on the most recent installment of NBC's "Saturday Night Live," the opening sketch absolutely skewered Barack Obama for having accomplished absolutely nothing since Inauguration Day.
In fact, according to actor Fred Armisen portraying Obama, his two biggest achievements thus far are "JACK and SQUAT!" (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript, h/t Story Balloon):
FRED ARMISEN AS BARACK OBAMA: There are those on the right who are angry. They think that I'm turning this great country into something that resembles the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany, but that's just not the case. But when you look at my record it's very clear what I've done so far and that is nothing. Nada. Almost one year and nothing to show for it.
As a checklist of his agenda items during the campaign appeared on the screen -- global warming, immigration reform, gays in the military, limits on executive powers, torture prosecutions, closing Gitmo, withdrawing from Iraq, improving the status of the fight in Afghanistan, healthcare reform, etc. -- Armisen accurately commented on how they weren't accomplished:
After completing the checklist, Armisen wonderfully said, "So looking at this list, I'm seeing two big accomplishments: JACK and SQUAT!"
But Armisen wonderfully reminded viewers:
And remember, I can do whatever I want. I have a majority in both houses of Congress. I could make it mandatory for all gays to marry, and require all cars to run on marijuana. But do I? No!
But it's not all bad news. I have a few accomplishments. The Cash for Clunkers program really stimulated the economy. Unfortunately it was the economy of Japan!
Let's see, what else? Also, I killed a fly on TV, remember that?
Uh, I brought a white police officer and a black professor together for a beer. Who else could do that? You're right -- Oprah. But no one else.
Bravo!!!

Proper spelling?
October 4, 2009 - 15:34 ET by JohnMTo distinguish the capital letter "O" from the numeral "0" when handwriting them in text, the "0" (zero) is written with a slash through it.
So maybe the Pres' name is really 0-bama, which would be pronounced:
"Zero-bama"
If I could write it here, the Zero would be written as a red circle with the red line through it.
It's hard to describe in words - maybe I should do it graphically, as a new bumper sticker!

October 4, 2009 - 21:59 ET by ptsonFor slightly over 1.2 Trillion Dollars ($1,200 Billion) all these things have been accomplished? What things?
Hum umm umm, Barack Insane Obama
1.Chrysler and GM have been stolen, renamed Government Motors and soon will be building tiny electric cars NO ONE will buy.
2.Acorn (a criminal organization) has been funded for years and years to come.
3.The Black panthers are free to intimidate voters.
4. Cheating on you taxes is no longer a barrier to federal government employment - even for the Secretary of Treasury, who oversees tax collections (who better to do that than a tax cheat?)
HUm umm umm, Barack Insane Obama
5.U.S. foreign policy has been turned over to the U.N. and the Afgan War to NATO so the Democrats will not be blamed for losing the war. (NATO did it)
I WOULD GO ON AND ON BUT THE REPUBLICANS DON'T SEEM TO CARE?
Sadly the actor portraying
October 4, 2009 - 09:44 ET by BDSadly the actor portraying Obama does not effectively mimic the classic Obama stilted speech pattern. Obama cannot seem to get further than about seven words out of a sentance without pausing for effect. I used to think it was because he sought impact, but now I have come to think that that is the length of a screen on his teleprompter.
THAT is what makes his speaking style so easy to mimic as seen on various radio programs.
Re Armisen
October 4, 2009 - 10:14 ET by slickwillie2001Agreed; Rush's 'Bamster' voice is really quite good, as is his Bill Clinton. I don't believe it is a difficult voice to mimic, it's just that so few comedians have dared to try because that would be un-PC, today anyway. The bigs, like Kevin Pollak, Dana Carvey, Robin Williams, etc, won't touch it; might get disinvited from the Eastside Christmas parties. I've not seen any professional stand-ins like Steve Bridges either.
This White House is also much too vindictive. Can you see the Bamster inviting even Armisen to the White House, as President George W. Bush did? The Bamster's voice is all he has, so he has to guard it jealously.
The Bamster has an odd softening at the end of sentences, not unlike that taught to TV anchors. Watch Cavuto's closing monologue to see it taken too far. It is a sign of voice coaching. It's obvious when he ends sentences with "the United States of America" (pron. 'marikeh'). He also says in one of his books that he studied the speech styles of black preachers to help him develop his own. Anyone doing his voice gets that down and that's a big part of it, besides the 'ums' and 'ahhs'.
Re SNL, way too little, way too late. They took a pass on a year or two of a goldmine of comedic material which they can never make up. Politics before ratings.
All good points
October 4, 2009 - 10:42 ET by BlondeEven my mom can "do" Obama.
The totally obvious (and missing) tennis-match-watching head movements, with the chin pointing up at the end of each seven word halt (and rise of inflection) would be dead-on simple to achieve. I notice Obama does this even when he's off-prompter, it's some kind of tic that goes along with his uhs and ohs.
I had to laugh at the bit at the end, though, "I'll have to take drastic measures, no not really", where the actor slumped back in the chair like a ten year old kid and then wiggled around like a dopey teenager at his own wit. That, to me, was the very best part of the video, Obama is nothing more than a big child, over his head, and totally clueless (not to mention in love with his own antics). Priceless.
I hope he fails, too.

October 4, 2009 - 11:37 ET by motherbeltI said that somewhere else, and either it's in another thread, or my comment disappeared!
The actor doesn't even come close to Obama's choppy, short-phrase delivery. He also misses on the "looking above the crowd" attitude.
If I may chime in....
October 4, 2009 - 14:10 ET by MrShyI think he's deliberately doing a tip-o-the-hat Chevy-doing-Ford impersonation of Obama. Not doing him at all, that is, voice-wise (although he looks like him) is my guess.
Otherwise, I agree, there are too many obvious things that any of US could even do to mimic Him, and I'm sure this guy could, as well.

October 4, 2009 - 13:41 ET by delmarI think it's a case of him not wanting to do it. Kind of like John Gibson's story of how Olbermann hid in his bathtub when he was told to report on Monica Lewinsky. At least SNL was able to make Armisen get on stage and do it, albeit poorly.

October 4, 2009 - 20:19 ET by slickwillie2001I have to give the audience a pass for now, because so many have it pounded into them that it is racist to laugh at anything critical of the Bamster.
