SNL Skewers Obama: So Far I've Accomplished Nothing! Nada!

On September 25, NewsBusters asked, "Will SNL take off the gloves and set its sights on the suddenly stumbling, bumbling President?"

On October 3, we got our answer, for on the most recent installment of NBC's "Saturday Night Live," the opening sketch absolutely skewered Barack Obama for having accomplished absolutely nothing since Inauguration Day.

In fact, according to actor Fred Armisen portraying Obama, his two biggest achievements thus far are "JACK and SQUAT!" (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript, h/t Story Balloon):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

FRED ARMISEN AS BARACK OBAMA: There are those on the right who are angry. They think that I'm turning this great country into something that resembles the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany, but that's just not the case. But when you look at my record it's very clear what I've done so far and that is nothing. Nada. Almost one year and nothing to show for it.

As a checklist of his agenda items during the campaign appeared on the screen -- global warming, immigration reform, gays in the military, limits on executive powers, torture prosecutions, closing Gitmo, withdrawing from Iraq, improving the status of the fight in Afghanistan, healthcare reform, etc. -- Armisen accurately commented on how they weren't accomplished:

After completing the checklist, Armisen wonderfully said, "So looking at this list, I'm seeing two big accomplishments: JACK and SQUAT!"

But Armisen wonderfully reminded viewers:

And remember, I can do whatever I want. I have a majority in both houses of Congress. I could make it mandatory for all gays to marry, and require all cars to run on marijuana. But do I? No!

But it's not all bad news. I have a few accomplishments. The Cash for Clunkers program really stimulated the economy. Unfortunately it was the economy of Japan!

Let's see, what else? Also, I killed a fly on TV, remember that?

Uh, I brought a white police officer and a black professor together for a beer. Who else could do that? You're right -- Oprah. But no one else.

Bravo!!!

Proper spelling?

To distinguish the capital letter "O" from the numeral "0" when handwriting them in text, the "0" (zero) is written with a slash through it.

So maybe the Pres' name is really 0-bama, which would be pronounced:

  "Zero-bama"

If I could write it here, the Zero would be written as a red circle with the red line through it.

It's hard to describe in words - maybe I should do it graphically, as a new bumper sticker!

0-bama from Chicag-0, the city with 0-lympics!!!

You mean like

You mean like this: Ø.

Of course, I would always want to give the thumbs down to Øbama↓ and the thumbs up to Palin↑.

WHAT A BARGAIN

For slightly over 1.2 Trillion Dollars ($1,200 Billion) all these things have been accomplished? What things?

Hum umm umm, Barack Insane Obama

1.Chrysler and GM have been stolen, renamed Government Motors and soon will be building tiny electric cars NO ONE will buy.

2.Acorn (a criminal organization) has been funded for years and years to come.

3.The Black panthers are free to intimidate voters.

4. Cheating on you taxes is no longer a barrier to federal government employment - even for the Secretary of Treasury, who oversees tax collections (who better to do that than a tax cheat?)

HUm umm umm, Barack Insane Obama

5.U.S. foreign policy has been turned over to the U.N. and the Afgan War to NATO so the Democrats will not be blamed for losing the war. (NATO did it)

I WOULD GO ON AND ON BUT THE REPUBLICANS DON'T SEEM TO CARE?

Sadly the actor portraying

Sadly the actor portraying Obama does not effectively mimic the classic Obama stilted speech pattern.  Obama cannot seem to get further than about seven words out of a sentance without pausing for effect.  I used to think it was because he sought impact, but now I have come to think that that is the length of a screen on his teleprompter.

THAT is what makes his speaking style so easy to mimic as seen on various radio programs.

Re Armisen

Agreed; Rush's 'Bamster' voice is really quite good, as is his Bill Clinton. I don't believe it is a difficult voice to mimic, it's just that so few comedians have dared to try because that would be un-PC, today anyway. The bigs, like Kevin Pollak, Dana Carvey, Robin Williams, etc, won't touch it; might get disinvited from the Eastside Christmas parties. I've not seen any professional stand-ins like Steve Bridges either.

This White House is also much too vindictive. Can you see the Bamster inviting even Armisen to the White House, as President George W. Bush did? The Bamster's voice is all he has, so he has to guard it jealously.

The Bamster has an odd softening at the end of sentences, not unlike that taught to TV anchors. Watch Cavuto's closing monologue to see it taken too far. It is a sign of voice coaching. It's obvious when he ends sentences with "the United States of America" (pron. 'marikeh'). He also says in one of his books that he studied the speech styles of black preachers to help him develop his own. Anyone doing his voice gets that down and that's a big part of it, besides the 'ums' and 'ahhs'.

Re SNL, way too little, way too late. They took a pass on a year or two of a goldmine of comedic material which they can never make up. Politics before ratings.

All good points

Even my mom can "do" Obama.

The totally obvious (and missing) tennis-match-watching head movements, with the chin pointing up at the end of each seven word halt (and rise of inflection) would be dead-on simple to achieve.  I notice Obama does this even when he's off-prompter, it's some kind of tic that goes along with his uhs and ohs.

I had to laugh at the bit at the end, though, "I'll have to take drastic measures, no not really", where the actor slumped back in the chair like a ten year old kid and then wiggled around like a dopey teenager at his own wit.  That, to me, was the very best part of the video, Obama is nothing more than a big child, over his head, and totally clueless (not to mention in love with his own antics).  Priceless.

I hope he fails, too.

I-bama's "drastic measures"

I-bama's "drastic measures" consist of Gibbs, Burton, etc attacking the messenger with immature, snarky comments without addressing the issue.

I said that somewhere else,

I said that somewhere else, and either it's in another thread, or my comment disappeared!

The actor doesn't even come close to Obama's choppy, short-phrase delivery. He also misses on the "looking above the crowd" attitude.

If I may chime in....

I think he's deliberately doing a tip-o-the-hat Chevy-doing-Ford impersonation of Obama. Not doing him at all, that is, voice-wise (although he looks like him) is my guess.

Otherwise, I agree, there are too many obvious things that any of US could even do to mimic Him, and I'm sure this guy could, as well.

Captain Kirk

"Obama cannot seem to get further than about seven words out of a sentance without pausing for effect."

I noticed that too. Lately,  I've been referring to him as Captain Kirk.

LMAO, corbaman!!!!!

That is so funny that you mentioned William Shatner, as my seven-year-old son looked at me a few weeks ago while we were watching the news and said to me, "Daddy, that guy sounds like the guy from the Priceline commercials."  Of course, I spit soda from my nose.  I hadn't noticed it until wisdom shot straight out the mouth a babe!

Every time Vain Obama's face appears, and that Captain Kirk Cadence, at least I'll smile before changing the channel.

Obama Parody Song

My DUmmie FUnnies co-conspirator, Charles Henrickson, has written a Barack Obama Olympics Epic Fail parody song called "Obama (That Bumblin' Clown)" to the tune of "Chicago (That Toddlin' Town)":

Obama, Obama, that bumblin' clown
Obama, Obama, he will fumble around--and flub it
Bet your teleprompter he'll lose the games for Chicago, Chicago
So bad that Oprah Winfrey will have to frown

Olympics are slim picks, when Barry's your shill
You do things like lose out to Brazil
He had the task, Chicago to sell
I had to laugh, he came with Michelle
O Chicago, Obama let you down!

The Comedy Factor

I'm not holding my breath until there's parity in political comedy. I wouldn't much care whether it happened or not. However, it's good to see that we're starting to get some breakthrough in Obama Madness: the determined unwillingness to see Obama's faults.

He's Chance the Gardener.

Chance's best line was: "I

I wish the resemblance ended there. Unfortunately, 0-bama tends toward the destructive.

Dear JG

You're absolutely right!!  And if I watched that POS show I would boycott it like right now.  Well, I mean next Saturday.  And the Saturday after that, too, of course.  And every other day it's on.

Fer sure.

snl and the one

I never thought I would regret not watching anything on snl; first time for everything.  The laughter was really "subdued;" that reflects the type of audience they get and its shock at having all the messiah's accomplishments enumerated so clearly so that even those dolts could understand them.

Wait, --- wha???

i thought there is nothing funny about Obama, i mean aside from his past associations, lack of experience, poor choices, cabinet of tax cheats, lack of economic acuity, constant uhhhs and dependance on the teleprompter, ears, VP choice, chicago mob roots.  Other than those things weren't we told there is nothing to make fun of?

Fred's Obama "impression" blows

To say Armisen's Obama impression sucks bigtime is an understatement.

You could walk into any bar in the country at any time and find someone who could do it a million times better.

So let's add the "dumbing down of comedy" to the list of underachievements to be celebrated.

Armisen is capable of doing a better impression

I think it's a case of him not wanting to do it.  Kind of like John Gibson's story of how Olbermann hid in his bathtub when he was told to report on Monica Lewinsky.  At least SNL was able to make Armisen get on stage and do it, albeit poorly.

Well I guess it's a start

I noticed that they didn't play the laugh track very much in the later part of video.  And it was primarily a list of left wing gripes.  Still, I agree, it's better than the usual fare of stale, warmed over Bush jokes.

I do have to give SNL

I do have to give SNL credit, they do tend to (more-or-less) take shots at everyone equally.

They did slam Sarah Palin frequently, but they also let her appear on the show in sketches they were at least neutral, if not favorable.

I had already forgotten about the Marci Klein interview.  She almost seems afraid to say nice things about Sarah Palin.  No doubt her Liberal friends were very angry that she did.

How come Armisen

I've started calling him, "President Uh."

Funny?

SNL disses Hussein for not being Socialist enough.

I've seen Fred do the Obama

I've seen Fred do the Obama impersonation much better. It's not great, but it's decent. This time he was a little light.

So have I

I think that Armisen did a lame impression of Obama so it seemed like he coud have been critical of someone else. Paul Shanklin does the best impression of Obama hands down - that is, until this guy pisses off the far left and his base off more.

"I think that Armisen did a lame impression of Obama so it seemed like he coud have been critical of someone else."

Really? Wow. There are some bizarre theories out there.

Is it OK to laugh

Did anyone else notice how nervous the crowd seemed at the beginning as if they were trying to decide if it were OK to laugh or not?

Re audience

I have to give the audience a pass for now, because so many have it pounded into them that it is racist to laugh at anything critical of the Bamster. They are probably sneaking a peek at the blacks in the audience for cues as to when it's okay to laugh. Maybe in the future they need a black man (like Rush's Bo Snerdly) to be the official laugh leader.

7 word limit

When he's not in front of a teleprompter he still has a difficult time going beyond 7 words without some kind of ... uh....uh...uh pause. I really think that when not in front of a teleprompter, he's simply does not speak well. Also, he has to measure just about every single word he says because if he said what he really wanted to say, we'd all see him for what he is. That is the last thing he wants.

bigvoo...It is interesting

bigvoo...It is interesting to observe the very wide gap between his onstage appearance, and the stumble-mumble he's become famous for when he is off script. Scary, actually.

Theory: his mind is full of contradictions, alternating allegiances, anger, demons fighting for each other for his attention, shallow thinking processes, ego protecting coping techniques, etc etc etc.

That that sort of mental mess creates a public image of a man on a horse riding off in all directions at once, rhetorically. I doubt he believes half of what he says.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Good grief.  That could

Good grief.  That could have been a funny skit, but the guy doing it is horrible.  Anyone could do that.  I do a better Obama that that.  Good GRIEF!

Perhaps that's how it was supposed to be.  Look like it's poking at Obama, but not too much.  Leave out any actual impersonation.

Speaking of post racial I

Speaking of post racial I heard some moron from Missouri on C-Span saying she knew what the N on the phrase NObama meant.  What a dolt and she's just looking for trouble.  She also said prior to that a previous caller on the Republican line sounded like a "white" person and she knows why he criticized Obama too.  Pedro finally cut her silly butt off and said we don't deal with that kind of language.  Good for him and C-Span!

When the people fear the government it's called tyranny, when the government fears the people it's called liberty!

The reason he hasn't accomplished...

some of the things on that list is because we haven't let him get away with it.

"If God is dead, somebody is going to have to take his place. It will
be megalomania or erotomania, the drive for power or the drive for
pleasure, the clenched fist or the phallus, Hitler or Hugh Hefner."
— Malcolm Muggeridge

Liberal Want List

Exactly. There's nothing on the list I want to see him accomplish - nit the way he would want to do it.

So, instead of laughing along with disappointed liberals, you should be going 'whew!.. Thank God.'

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

Maybe I'm getting old...

Maybe I'm getting old... but SNL is no where near the cleverness and funny they use to be. Not even a effort to mimic Obama's mannerisms or cadance.

SNL is nearly as lame as Obama.
