Reich Laughed At For Saying Stimulus 'Keeping People Employed'

  • Bookmark and Share

Former Clinton Labor Secretary and current Obama economic advisor Robert Reich was laughed at Friday for claiming "the stimulus package is the thing that is actually keeping the economy up, keeping people employed."

In a discussion on CNBC about the larger than expected September job losses reported Friday by the Labor Department, Reich was explaining to hosts Melissa Francis and Lawrence Kudlow how things would be much worse if not for the stimulus package.

He also implied that things won't get better until healthcare is reformed.

In the middle of this absolutely absurd statement, Francis and Kudlow appeared to look at each other with the former breaking out into laughter and the latter doing his best to hold it back (video embedded below the fold):

Rather than worry about government spending too much, I worry quite frankly about government spending too little. As I said before, the stimulus package is the thing that is actually keeping the economy up, keeping people employed. Without government spending, without the stimulus package, I'm afraid as the Commerce Secretary said, we're going to be in trouble. If we talk about healthcare reform, I'll tell you, we've got to get those, those costs under control and that long-term cost curve down.

Is this how the Obama-loving media are going to report today's terrible economic news: it would be worse without the stimulus package, and it will only get better if we pass healthcare reform?

Stay tuned.

He should be laughed at.  Friedbrain is smoking crack.

Civilian Labor Force DROPPED by a whopping 574,000 people in one month. The 9.8% stat is skewed to the downside, we are actually well over 10% for unemployment.

If we look at table A1, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t01.htm As of September we seeing the following important numbers that reflect the real unemployment rate.

5,922,000 Persons who currently want a job (broken out from the NOT in Labor Force #)
15,142,000 Unemployed (for less than 12 months)
———-
21,064,000 Total Seeking Employment
———–
154,006,000 Civilian labor force

13.67% Actual Unemployment Which by the way is in line with my earlier estimates (actually over my estimates), had the stats been realistically reported.

785,000 people lost their jobs just LAST month. This was a blood bath in terms of the employment #.  Just to let you guys know how whopping that 785,000 reduction in the employment is, it’s a record. Not since 1948 per the BLS data has the economy EVER lost that many jobs. NOT EVER.

http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?data_tool=latest_numbers&series_id=LNS12000000&output_view=net_1mth

(change the date to the earliest year possible, 1948)

The really big news here is the Not In Labor Force #. A whopping 807,000 dropped off the unemployment rolls into long term intractable unemployment. Remember, to be counted on the unemployment statistic you must unemployed for LESS than a year. This is not simply terrible, it’s earth shattering as it says structural unemployment is accelerating - cutting out the legs from any possible short term recovery. This is why SS and Medicare are floundering in the cash flow area, all these people are no longer contributing to the funds via the payroll taxes they used to pay when they were employed.

If flapping his gums could create jobs, we would have zero unemployment.

The question is not what he has done to stimulate the economy?  The question is what he is doing to snuff out any economic growth?   If you were a business owner responsible for planning any equipment upgrades, expansion or hiring would you be committing any money for those things in the current politically unstable environment?  The answer is NO.  The passage of any one of the proposed liberal bad ideas will dramatically raise costs that will wipe out any hope of reward for the risk they might take.

Just so's you know, Obama pulled a fast one on Congress with Cap & Trade.  Since he couldn't get it past the Congress, he gave the final go ahead to the EPA to drive up electric rates come 2011.  Interesting that he choose to boost the cost of electricity after the midterm elections.  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/science/earth/01epa.html?_r=1&hp

The proposed rules, which could take effect as early as 2011, would
place the greatest burden on 400 power plants, new ones and those
undergoing substantial renovation, by requiring them to prove that they
have applied the best available technology to reduce emissions or face
penalties.

In Obama's own words, 17 Jan 2008: “Under my plan of a cap and trade system electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Businesses would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that cost onto consumers.”

Why Reich?

I don't know why Kudlow has Reich on so often, all he does is babble his DNC talking points and get upset if anyone interrupts him.

I used to respect Reich

Reich sucks up the requisite amt--how come he does not have a job in the admin? Mystery to me.

That's one of those comments...

That's one of those comments where it tells you a lot about the person who said it.  The question is - does Reich actually believe it or does he just hope that everyone else will?

When I see Robert Reich I always remember the time he filled in for Bill O'Reilly about 7-8 years ago.  Reich started off the show by saying, "Bill and I share the same political ideology."  I'm still not sure if he believed that or just hoped that everyone else would.

Yea, right, Tell that to the half a million people who lost their jobs last month alone.  If you even survive the encounter, I'll be surprised.

if you add in those NO LONGER LOOKING FOR WORK~!!!!

I have never understood the

I have never understood the "no longer looking for work," or better yet, the "gave up looking" category.  I understand someone opening a small business when they get laid off, so they're not looking anymore, or one spouse deciding to stay at home, with the other spouse still working.  But I don't understand quitting looking.  What able-bodied person would just quit looking for income?  (ok, yes I know there are some and govt hands them our money daily, but thats another discussion)

How do they know someone is or isn't looking for work?  If you aren't getting an unemployment check, they have no way of tracking what you're doing.  Do they just assume that when you stop collecting unemployment, you stop looking for work?

→ Greg

That's one of the reasons why it's hard to measure this recession against the Depression.  There simply wasn't any such measure as unemployment payouts.

Then we look at all the buyout packages that haven't affected the number yet.  As long as you're still drawing the severance allowance, you're not unemployed.

Then we've got all those 55-60 yr olds who took early retirement, whose jobs will never be refilled because the job went South.

".....As long as you're

I hadn't ever given that any thought.  Interesting.

Reich was always one of the

Reich was always one of the loonier liars in the Clinton administration (coming in just behind Begala and Serpenthead) . But, holy cow, this guy has morphed into a certifiable nutcase in his declining years.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

The sad fact - sad because

The sad fact - sad because the reasoning behind is not being reported - is that the so-called stimlus package has had little impact because little of it has been spent up to now.  But, that isn't the sad fact.  The sad fact is that it is purposefully being withheld until 2010.  What is so magical about that year?  It is an election year.  When it rolls around, you will see the stimulus package gates opened wide.  The dimocrats will make ever effort to get reelected.  This will be just one arrow in their quiver.

Meanwhile, the so-called stimulus package whether spent now or later is wasted.  It doesn't give incentives to those that create jobs - small business.  It attempts to help the economy by adding or accelerating payments to the poor.  The poor will just spend it.  That is a hard cold fact.  Create the incentives for business to thrive and the jobs will come back.

What to do:

Reduce the ever greater reporting duties of corporate America to government entities - it is the most burdensome in the world.

Reduce corporate tax - it is the 2d highest in the world.

Accelerate depreciation on capital expenditure - it one of the slowest depreciation schedules, depending on the item, in the world.

Get the hell out of the boardroom.  It is the board of directors and the shareholders that should decide employee compensation.

Do not prop up failing businesses.  No business is too big to fail.  If we had done this last year, there wouldn't be talk about the above item.

Just adopt the fair tax and

Just adopt the fair tax and watch the economy come screaming back.

Agreed!  No chance of

Agreed!  No chance of anything ACTUALLY fair while liberals hold all power.  They view the Fair Tax as satanic.

1uncle: Didn't I read that stimulus money can not all be accounted for? Acorn?  A bill should never be rushed through congress.  A full week,          7 days,  should be the law.  If they are in a hurry, they are hiding something. States should take back some of the power usurped by the feds.

I watch Kudlow

I usually watch CNBC with Larry Kudlow and Maria Bartiromo. I tell people if you really want to know how the economy is doing and what Obama really wants to do to this country, watch a financial show. Everyone on these shows just crunches numbers and ALWAYS calls out the Obama administration on fudging numbers. Even though  it is an NBC network, numbers don't lie and I believe I get  straight information from them. This was a good video.

Re Watching Kudlow

He's also on at 7pm ET, so he's a welcome alternative to Shemp Smith at Fox News.

Simple Economics

If this kind of "economics" worked, there would be at least 20 superpowers in Europe. Keynesian economics has been discredited for at least 25 years (remember "voodoo economics?), but the left keeps pushing it, because it empowers government, and government is always more trustworthy than corporations to the left.

MSM - shaping all the perceptions you need to believe, then confirming it with a poll.

Do ya think

that anyone from the administration keeps an eye on these programs?

I mean, it's obvious that the administration is rife with idiots, and at times, it's painfully obvious that they get their ideas from the left wing wackos of the MSM.

But do you think they look at oposing opinions from REAL EXPERTS to try and get a clue?

This example of a wacko lefty even thinkin' that the porkulous is keeping the economy afloat, and the verbal and non-verbal reaction from the "expert panel" would normally send a shot across the bow of a sinking ship.

umm umm umm - maybe not.........

Reich is an idiot. I

Reich is an idiot.

I don't think she was laughing at him.  She looks to her right, downward, as if to read a note someone wrote, then laughs.

Now, she would have every reason to laugh at him, of course. :-)

BTW, anyone remember June 8?

Well, the Dumorats are

Well, the Dumorats are keeping him employed, so from his perspective...

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

It's been long enough now

It's been long enough now that some people (myself included) have dropped off of the Unemployment Lists (not receiving unemployment benefits) yet who are still unemployed with absolutely no hope of getting employment.  People are still getting laid off.  No one is getting called back to work.  The percentage of unemployed is much higher than the states and federal government (and the complicit press) are telling everyone.

I have complete confidence in saying that Hussein is deliberately destroying our country's economic system.  I challenge anyone to prove me wrong by hiring me or finding me a job anywhere in the northern Illinois area.

Hopefully before next month when they take my home away.

Re; Robert Reich on CNBC

Hello,

Robert wake-up and get with the program. You are suppose to blame Bush remember. Everything is his fault. He is the one that caused everything to go South so to speak.  Youa re a demo-crap party member, and you work for this President right now, and you are actually saying just like Joe-(WHICH WAY DID THEY GO)-Biden that this joke called a stimulus package is actually working. HEY ROBERT WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING?
