NBC's Brian Mooar got quite an earful from audience members at the first day of the Values Voter Summit that started in Washington, D.C. Friday.
To be fair, it seems press members were staged inside the conference hall at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
As such, as Mooar was giving his report to MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell, he was making it difficult for people in the back of the hall to hear whoever was on stage at the time.
Predictably, O'Donnell didn't understand what audience members were complaining about, and instead assumed the disturbance was because the attendees didn't want the press to know what was going on at the Summit (video embedded below the fold, h/t NBer TheSter and Jeff Poor):

Too stupid to associate with reality?
September 18, 2009 - 16:21 ET by Willis_Leon_JohnsonToo arrogant to show RESPECT for the people attending the event?
Perhaps a $10,000 entry feen for MSNBC camera crews in the future would help get the message across?
Maybe the organizers should have gone back and DIS invited the fools that think they have a right to attend because they have a camera crew backing them up?

September 19, 2009 - 00:17 ET by KC MulvilleBut they don't have the right to run their segments during the speeches. Why can't they wait until the speeches are done to start a segment? Do they feel they have the right to set up their cameras wherever they want, even if it's four inches to the right of the podium, and interrupt the speakers during the speech? All the people were trying to do was to tell them to keep it down.
They've lapsed into absurdity.

September 18, 2009 - 16:32 ET by SickofLibsI love the way Mooar tries to get the names of the people who spoke to him.
One could only assume that would be to facilitate the initiation of 'plumberization procedures.'

Seems he said a Fox reporter was asked to keep it down as well.
Fair and balanced.
Anyone know off-hand if this was on C-SPAN?
Reason I ask, Norah has this big conspiracy theory saying these people don't seem to want us know what they are talking about...or some-such BS. ..yet she turns around and says well, they knew the press/cameras were there...which is it Norah?
Seems reasonable to me for others to ask them not to report while others around them can't hear what is being said by the speaker.

September 18, 2009 - 18:15 ET by SouthernRootsShe's just mad because the reporters didn't have podiums on stage to do play by play reporting during the speeches.
To be oblivious to the fact that their lights and commentary was a distraction to those nearby is truly a sign of the infectous arrogance virus.
Next time, the house lights should be brought up and the speaker should go stand right next to the reporter and give their speech from there.

September 18, 2009 - 18:27 ET by Willis_Leon_JohnsonThe speaker giving the presentation should identify who is causing the distraction, and still standing at the podium with cameras rolling point out the network, the local channel and the name of the reporter and tell them:
"Please let us know when we can proceed, because as reasonable, courteous people, we would never interrupt YOUR POOR BEHAVIOR."
Then start the stop watch and time them.
The reporter will never be invited back. Or if they are, the paid attendees should all demand a refund.

September 18, 2009 - 16:34 ET by MaideneerThe real sinister part from the fools at MSLSD comes in two parts, both from the idiot drone man behind the mic.
1) When he asks the lady at 2:54 "And you are?" - The answer is, it doesn't matter who she is, she is attending the conference and respectfully requested he pause his report so the attendees could listen.
2) At 3:02, he snidely says "Continuing our report now...", with total disregard to everything everyone just told him. These journalistic nitwits have zero courtesy and think they can push everyone around with their "credentialed press" bull.
MSNBC = Last Place
September 18, 2009 - 16:35 ET by RpeggioFunny stuff. They're trying to 'create' news by saying MSNBC is being shouted-down, yet the reporter himself says the Fox News reporter is getting harassed and told to quiet down as well. Classic.
If I had paid a few hundred bucks to hear some speakers and then had 'any' news outlet doing a live shot over my shoulder, I'd ask that they move or quiet down or keep it short...the news media has to be respectful of others. If they were doing a live shot and I was speaking loudly, they'd tell me to move or shut-up....it goes both ways MSNBC. God are they a bunch of whiners.
It's too bad, I used to think Norah was hot, now she's just a typical ugly liberal....really sad.

September 18, 2009 - 16:49 ET by katainkentJust a thought - how about film the event and then occassionally step outside and report on it where you won't be interrupting people. If you have problems remembering what you might highlight, write them down. The press are a bunch of elitist snobs and throw basic human respect to the wind when they have a mic in their hands because it 'makes good tv'.
I think the gentleman (that got asked to leave) also said something to Shep. I just read a news blip saying Shep was interrupted. I wonder how the Fox Studio B newsroom handled it.
And gosh, if the Values Voter summit wasn't taped and broadcast *gasp* no one would know what went on there.

September 18, 2009 - 16:53 ET by DaMavClearly the reporter could have given his report from the hallway where he wouldn't be interrupting the proceedings. These arrogant idiots are paid a fortune and they seem... how else can I say it... just plain dumb.
Even after it was patiently explained to them what the problem was, they didn't get it. He could have even said, "I'm really sorry, we'll be done in a couple minutes and we can't relocate in the middle of a live broadcast." Instead they arrogantly impugned their motives, like they couldn't grasp the concept of common civility and wanting to hear what speaker you paid time and money to hear was saying.

Call me crazy, but it seems CSPAN hardly ever covers or spotlights GOP/conservative causes with as much enthusiasm as DNC/liberals. IMO, they're just "NPR-TV".
A little off topic:
For an outfit that's been around for well over 20 years, their camera coverage still sucks, like panning away from the action happening on stage for the zombie-like obligatory crowd shots. Also, can't they shell out a few bucks for some additional ones?

I'm with you all the way regarding C-SPAN...I've watched it close to 20 years myself.
It has changed a lot...I used to hate missing the Wa. Journal, half the time in the last few years, I can barely tolerate it...sometimes, I even forget to turn it there...a place I went to religiously, morning coffee started between 4-5 in the morning where I live when it comes on...not so now.
As to the rest of your post...I also agree.

duh?
my thoughts exactly
September 19, 2009 - 00:22 ET by spmcintyrewhy did either MSNBC or FOX need to be doing commentary during the speeches? Did it not serve them well enough on either channel to just cover what the speakers were saying, then comment afterwards?
How about this, run the live feed from the camera crew, and have the studio anchor speak to what is going on, or maybe just let the speakers talk. Why was that so difficult?
When it comes to government, its not whether the glass is half full or empty, its that the glass is just to big.

September 18, 2009 - 19:08 ET by Radical1979I saw Fox get shut down too because they were interfering with people at the event. Good for them. The media is not royalty, and this event wasn't about them. Maybe if we all expected the media to act like Ladies and Gentlemen, they would act like it, and not try to talk while someone is giving a speech. Not that they would talk over Obama....

September 18, 2009 - 21:06 ET by The7SticksAs far as I'm concerned, these two groups of people (The liberals and the conservatives) have their own conspiracy theories about each other. So this Nora O'Donnell thinks there is a conspiracy to keep the media from reporting at the Values Voters summit? Okay fine, she has no credibility then. Problem is, the people at the Values Voters summit just as much credibility as Messed-UpNBC. I took a little time (for all my sins) to look at the schedule this summit has: (http://www.valuesvotersummit.org/schedule)
