As national media outlets and their employees depict town hall meeting protesters as right-wing outsiders organized by conservative organizations, the Atlanta affiliate of NBC aired a segment Friday evening that should act as a fine example of how this uprising in America should be covered.
11 Alive reporter Duffie Dixon not only showed a heated exchange between Rep. David Scott (D-13th District) and a man asking him about his position on pending healthcare legislation in the House, but also interviewed the questioner when Scott erroneously contended the man was not a constituent and was only trying to hijack his meeting.
As Dixon shared with her viewers, not only wasn't the questioner an organized outsider, he was actually a local doctor (video embedded below the fold, h/t Hot Air via Terri Green):
Attention national media: THAT'S how this subject should be handled if you have any journalistic integrity left.
Those interested should watch the entire unedited exchange between Scott and Dr. Brian Hill:

The president has set up flag@whitehouse.gov so that citizens who are opposed to nationalizing healthcare can be reported to the government. I realize that is not what they say it is for, but nonetheless that is what it is for. This is in flagrant violation of 5 USC sec 552a, which says in part: “United States agencies, including the Executive Office of the President shall, ‘maintain no record describing how any individual exercises rights guaranteed by the First Amendment unless expressly authorized by statute or by the individual about whom the record is maintained or unless pertinent to and within the scope of an authorized law enforcement activity.’ ” In my opinion this qualifies as a “high crime and misdeameanor” under Article 2 section 4 of the Constitution. If this does not qualify, please tell me why it does not. If it does qualify, please call a press conference demanding either that the flag@whitehouse.gov be taken down or that impeachement proceedings be started against Obama.

Sat, 08/08/2009 - 14:18 ET by acumenThat was your first post and I understand the emotions associated with that.
However, please consider that most posters and commenters here, in conformity with the goals/guidelines set forth by NB, seek to focus on media bias.
This is not a race blog. I'm confident you will find most posters and commenters at NB share the opinions of Doctor Martin Luther King Jr and are fatigued with the use of race as a criteria for determing anything that can be construed as beneficial in assessing character. Hopefully that will suffenciently explain the blunt response(s) to your comment.
If addressing the severe problem of media bias interests you, I welcome your input and look forward to a constructive dialogue that will hopefully limit and ultimately end media bias wherever it exists.
Welcome aboard.

Sat, 08/08/2009 - 14:17 ET by KC MulvilleOne thing, nyk ... "You lost the election because of this kind of tone and discourse." I respectfully disagree. McCain was ahead, until the financial collapse, and McCain's feckless response to it. It had nothing to do with the tone.
However, I watched the video, and I did have a couple questions about it. I don't think NB distorted anything, but I have some sympathy for the congressman.
So, really, I didn't like the congressman hurling vast right wing conspiracy-type charges, but I can understand his agitation. I'd probably have been a little irritated myself.
That having been said, you have to scratch your head at his answer. The questioner asked, basically, why would you consider voting for a public option when it has been a documented failure in Massachusetts? His answer: because he has lots of uninsured people in his district.

Mr Scott clearly answered the ?'s about health care plus he was upset about the lack of respect shown by Dr. Hill regarding the purpose of the town hall, calling it a "hijack"
Scott was asked to promise that he would not vote for national healthcare. He hum-halled until they pressed him for an answer. Besides that, Dr. Hill swears that he contacted Scott with multiple requests for a healthcare townhall and was systematically ignored. Dr. Hill waited through the main part of the meeting. At the end Scott opened an unscripted Q&A where the discussion was allowed to go off topic.
considered voting for McCain until he lost his mind. This kind of lang and conduct is what drove me away from his campaign.
A hyper-partisan liberal thought about voting for a Republican? Really? This smacks of the liberals who write into newspapers every six months with "I used to like Ann Coulter but now she's gone too far."
Here in Columbus, on a Sunday afternoon late in Sept, Obama gave a speech with over a 100,000 in attendance. Simply remarkable.
What's the point of this? You can get 100k people to show up at a free Bruce Springsteen concert. Wait a second...that's exactly what Obama did in Ohio...
You lost the election because of this kind of tone and discourse.
Um no, I'm pretty sure we lost the election because McCain had zero charisma and Obama was paying rock stars to perform for him. Ask the typical Obama voter what he actually stands for, and the answer won't go much deeper than "he wants to change and make things better."
You lost by 8 million votes to a black man with a funny name and was unknown.
As opposed to what, losing by 8 million votes to a white man with a Caucasian name? Oops, I forgot, you apologized below. Too bad you couldn't get anyone here to take the bait. Kind of like the trial lawyer who pushes a witness into cussing and then asks the jury to "ignore" it.
After that whipping, you would think some of you would rethink your strategy.
Shall we go back to the old strategy of letting John McCain be our spokesman? I thought a liberal would love the idea of bipartisanship. Registered Democrats are showing up at protests precisely because Republicans are not invited to speak there.
And aside from that, since Obama's poll numbers have slipped and he's completely lost his momentum on healthcare, you would think that he would have a better strategy than calling on unions to "punch back twice as hard" and telling protestors to "stop talking." Is this the kind of conduct liberals are proud of?

BETTY NGUYEN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, speaking of town hall meetings, some are just getting downright ugly for Democrats talking with their constituents about health care. Take a listen to this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
(SHOUTING)
(END VIDEO CLIP)
NGUYEN: Some voters back home are angry over the health care reform plan, and skipping town halls altogether could still draw a heated response. The Associated Press says one Democrat has received death threats for not scheduling one.
CNN's Gary Tuchman looks at what is driving all of this anger.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Is it democracy? Demagoguery? Or both?
Congressional town hall meetings during August recess used to be sleepy affairs. Not anymore.
There are images of President Obama with a mustache like Hitler's or looking like the Joker, and also elected representatives hung in effigy.
Democratic senators like Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter ...
SEN. ARLEN SPECTER, (D) PENNSYLVANIA: Medicare and Social Security ...
TUCHMAN: And Missouri's Claire McCaskill are hearing from extremely unhappy Americans who don't like health care reform.
SEN. CLAIRE MCCASKILL, (D) MISSOURI: Same plan they're asking ...
TUCHMAN: People have been arrested. Others have suffered minor injuries with the pushing and shoving. Democrats like Florida's Kathy Caster have barely been able to get in a word edgewise.
At her meeting, reform opponents were seething because hundreds of them were stuck outside the town hall because they couldn't fit in the room. Protesters held signs on the other side of the window. The congresswoman had to be hustled out.
In Texas, Congressman Lloyd Doggett tried to talk.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You voted against it. That's not right.
TUCHMAN: He, too, was drowned out. One protester used his artisanry to depict the congressman in a rather unsavory way.
REP. LLOYD DOGGETT, (D) TEXAS: The crowd certainly was angry. I suppose some might have had a negative reaction to the poster that said "Lloyd Doggett, traitor to Texas, devil to all people."
TUCHMAN: So how did it come to this? It depends who you ask.
The Democratic National Committee says these confrontations are orchestrated by the Republican party, and the Democrats have released this web video.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They've lost the confidence of the American people. Now desperate Republicans and their well-funded allies are organizing angry mobs, just like they during the election.
TUCHMAN: The word "mob" is greatly insulting to the folks on the other side of the argument. Many of the participants in these demonstrations say they are simply exercising their rights.
Anna Puig is a Pennsylvanian who attended a town hall hosted by Arlen Specter and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
ANA PUIG, THOMAS JEFFERSON CLUB: I feel like my constitutional rights are being taken away from me right before my eyes. I don't like the direction that we're going. They're taking away our freedom of speech, and the silent majority is finally fed up with it.
TUCHMAN: But now liberal advocacy groups Moveon.org has sent out an e-mail to supporter, saying they have a plan "to fight back against radical right wingers." The group is raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations.
It's not only the weather that's hot in August. Now the political temperature is boiling, too.
Gary Tuchman, CNN, New York. (END VIDEOTAPE)
NOTE: In a later CNN piece today that I watched (transcript not yet available), CNN, "The Most Trusted Name in News", had added unflattering comments from White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

[q] Scott displayed his temper during a question-and-answer period when David Hill, a local resident and doctor, questioned the congressman over his support of President Barack Obama’s proposed single-payer health care system.
“Why are you voting for a health care plan that is shown not to work in Massachusetts and why are you going to institute that in a nation-wide manner?”
With a look of confusion on his face, the congressman first quietly asked an aide, “Is that the type of bill they got going on?” Then, reassured by staff that the bill Hill referenced was, in fact, the bill before Congress, Scott proceeded to respond, insomuch as the Congressman’s angry tirade may be called a response. [endq]
He had to ask his aide? A Congressman that doesn't know anything about the Massachusetts plan? Would it be too much to ask that those in Congress study the state experiments (HI, OR, MA, TN) either failed or underway before they make the same mistakes again?

Sun, 08/09/2009 - 00:16 ET by MazziThey are way too busy to actually do anything like reading or researching silly things like bills. They have lobbyists to meet with, lunches to do, political parties to protect, committees to sit on....and on and on and on. What? Did you think we sent then to Washington to work for us or something? They are much too busy for THAT nonsense.

The head of the Jucicial Committee mind you....and his wife is sentenced...both crooks...two peas in a pod, she's the one that will be sitting in one though.

Anyone noticed the obvious
Sun, 08/09/2009 - 00:27 ET by legacyrepublicanHas anyone noted the irony that it is a uroligist that is pi**ed off by the Health Care Reform.
Anyway, as I watched this video, I thought that it was reverse racism.
This was racial profiling by a black man! Obviously a white man can't live in his district or ask him any questions.

The thing I got from this vid is that the congresscritter in quesion wanted scheduled meetings with those opposed to obamacare. The easier to outnumber and browbeat them.

Medical Stimulus
Package:
Apparently
the American Medical Association has weighed in
on the new economic stimulus
package....
The Allergists voted to
scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash
moves.
The Gastroenterologists
had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought
the Administration had a lot of nerve.
The Obstetricians felt they were all
laboring under a misconception.
The Ophthalmologists
considered the idea shortsighted.
Pathologists yelled, "Over
my dead body!" while the Pediatricians said, 'Oh, Grow
up!'
The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the
Radiologists could see right through it.
Surgeons decided to
wash their hands of the whole thing.
The Internists thought it was a
bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, "This puts a
whole new face on the matter."
The Podiatrists thought it was a step
forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole
idea.
The Anesthesiologists
thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have
the heart to say no.
In the end, the Proctologists won out,
leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in
Washington.

Scott is as safe as can be
Sun, 08/09/2009 - 10:33 ET by slickwillie2001Scott's gerrymandered 13th in Georgia comprises much of West and South Atlanta suburbs; it's 44% black. That means any democratic party candidate starts with about 42% support in the bag. Another 10% is hispanic. As for the way he acted at this particular meeting, half of his supporters probably liked the way he put the evil white man in his place at this meeting. He's a doctor so they take that to mean he's rich, so all the better. This is the mentality in Atlanta local government as well.
The only way someone like Scott leaves office is if he doesn't pay off the right people in the black democratic party machine and they decide to take him out by running someone in the primary against him.
There's really no point in running a Republican candidate here.
