"I wasn't at the press conference last night, and I also don't have all the facts, but I think it's fair to say that Obama handled that question -- oh, what's the word I'm looking for -- stupidly?"
So quite surpisingly said Comedy Central's Jon Stewart on Thursday's "Daily Show" in reference to the President's statement at Wednesday's press conference that the police officers involved in Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates's arrest "acted stupidly."
I kid you not.
In a fabulous display of bipartisan comedy -- Stewart deliciously lambasted Republicans, Democrats, Fox News, CNN, Brian Williams, healthcare reform, and, yes, the President -- Stewart ended the segment criticizing Obama's answer to Lynn Sweet's question about what the Gates incident says about race relations in America (video embedded below the fold, relevant section at 6:12, vulgarity warning, h/t NBer balboa):
Great stuff.
Of course, it leads one to wonder: if an admittedly left-leaning comedian can see the folly in Obama's answer, why can't everybody in the media?
That asked, readers are encouraged to watch the entire segment as Stewart marvelously lampooned -- well, just about everybody involved in the current healthcare debate.

Obama is "stupidly."
July 24, 2009 - 12:10 ET by DJEddleCould Obama have handled the situation in any other way? His entire so-called "presidency" has been handled "stupidly."
I'm still waiting for him to do something "smartly." Apparently, it's going to be a while.

OBAMA STEPS IN IT AGAIN
July 24, 2009 - 12:30 ET by reelman46OBAMA: STEPS IN IT AGAIN
Will he ever learn to avoid preaching on issues without ALL the facts?
Now Obama takes the low road and comments on a low level semi-racial issue…
Some FACTS are:
This took place in ultra-liberal Cambridge…within the state of Teddy, Frank and Kerry.
A neighbor called to report potential burglars when she saw 2 men trying to get into a house.
A white and a black cop showed up in response to the call.
(The 16 year vet white cop was chosen by his black boss to head up the “racial profiling” for the dept)
The Afro-Am Studies prof was asked for proof he lived there.
The Harvard prof mouthed off from the start, never let up and was NOT engaged by the cops.
As the cops left into the yard the prof continued loudly mouthing off abusively.
The rant IS on tape…they are debating releasing it. (I hope they do)
=====
But “the uniter, the racial healer” Obama could not resist a lecture…and condemning without the facts.

Are We Certain?
July 24, 2009 - 12:13 ET by CaringwhiteguyAre we certain the President was unprepared or unaware Lynn Sweet's question was coming? After all, what's a Presidential presser other than an Obama Town Hall Meeting?
I wonder about that
July 24, 2009 - 12:47 ET by nwahsI had the news conference on, but wasn't listening very carefully. There seems to have been a mix up in the two questions prior to the Gates question. Apparently, one reporter went out of turn and Obama's answer to his question seemed to be crafted around his upcoming visit to the Cleveland Clinic. Well then it turns out the wrong reporter stood up so he took the question of the reporter he meant to call on. Well the question from that reporter was about the Cleveland Clinic."Ohoh"
Well since Obama has just went through the Cleveland Clinic in his previous answer, he was fairly brief so, in his words, he could get to Lynn Sweets question.
As I said, I wasn't listening closely, but if thats what happened, he knew the questions ahead of time (including the Gates question), with the Cleveland Clinic answer crafted beforehand.
Why not Jeb Bush?
Lebron Hussein Obama?
July 24, 2009 - 12:16 ET by slickwillie2001Could a Republican call the Bamster 'Lebron Hussein Obama' and get away with it?
You're right, slick,
July 24, 2009 - 13:02 ET by Indiana JoePersonally, even with the double-standard you point out, I was thrilled to hear Stewart use the "H" word!
Maybe the honeymoon is finally starting to wear thin, even on Obama's most ardent liberal apologists?

Give him credit
July 24, 2009 - 12:20 ET by KC MulvilleSo far, Stewart is the only one who's gone after Obama at all. Granted, he doesn't go after him with the same frequency (or with the same contempt) as he attacked Bush, but give him credit. At least he's doing it. The rest of the comedians wouldn't dare.
Score one for Stewart. Isn't anyone else going to compete with him?
yet
July 24, 2009 - 13:24 ET by 24enakStewart hasn't gone after the president withe the same frequency yet, he has only been president for a couple of months. He has ridiculed the president before on sticking with don't ask don't tell policy.
He has always been critical of the media, all media. Is he more critical of FNC and republicans yeah but they have been in political power for the last 8 years.
I love it when Stewart uses my line...

Funny stuff
July 24, 2009 - 12:34 ET by nwahsThat was pretty good. It was ridiculous thing for Obama to do. I don't think he could contain the community organizer in him:)

Don't celebrate one night
July 24, 2009 - 12:35 ET by NonArabOmarDon't celebrate one night of "bipartisan" comedy. He's still a partisan hack. It's not an election year. Come next year, he will be doing propaganda for the liberals.

My take
July 24, 2009 - 13:06 ET by Indiana JoeI thought Stewart was lampooning the fawning media coverage that Obama has gotten... even from Stewart himself. Anyone that can make fun of themselves gets some respect from me.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."-John Adams
Unbelievable,
July 24, 2009 - 13:12 ET by Indiana Joe... as Noel says. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole clip. I don't think I've EVER watched 8+ minutes of Stewart before. I simply couldn't stand it.
(Note to balboa: don't bother telling me I've missed some "great stuff." I haven't missed it at all. And "great" is purely subjective.)
BTW, was the "vulgarity alert" due to the word "dildo?" Seems a bit lame to qualify, but that's just me, I guess.

July 24, 2009 - 13:40 ET by eugeneromeroHe's just throwing you a bone. I've seen Chris Matthews do this as well. He'll bash and bash conservatives and then one day, he says something negative about Obama just to make you say, "Hmm, maybe he isn't as far left as I thought he was. Maybe I'll watch him again tomorrow. Then tomorrow the conservative bashing picks up right where it left off and you just got duped. Don't fall for it. All the liberals do it.
