Now that President Obama has weighed in on the arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, it seems a metaphysical certitude news media will milk this story for all it's worth.
On Thursday, the CBS "Evening News" did exactly that by first opening its program with the President's statement made during Wednesday's press conference, and then following it with a segment on how this incident "spotlights a history of mistrust between police and minority communities."
As you watch the following video, ask yourself whether the content of this segment will improve race relations in America, or worsen them (video embedded below the fold with full transcript):
KATIE COURIC, ANCHOR: There is, of course, a long history of tension in this country between African-Americans and the police. And whenever there`s a suggestion that race may be involved in a confrontation with an officer, emotions still run high. Bill Whitaker explains why.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
BILL WHITAKER, CBS CORRESPONDENT: When it comes to matters of race...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Both of them exercises poor judgment.
WHITAKER: The professor Skip Gates incident is like a national Rorschach test. What you see depends on who you are. Today, many African- Americans see racial profiling.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is not right. This is happening all over the place.
STEVE MALZBERG, WOR RADIO: This is a racist incident?
WHITAKER: Others a cop performing his duties.
MALZBERG: This is a cop doing his job.
WHITAKER: This latest incident spotlights a history of mistrust between police and minority communities. In May, a white New York City cop mistook a black colleague for a criminal and shot him dead. In Oakland, a transit officer fatally shot an unarmed black man in the back on New Year`s Day. Ryan Robertson was arrested on his way to exams at Harvard in 2003 when he yelled at a Cambridge officer who questioned whether he actually owned his BMW.
It still hurts today.
RYAN ROBERTSON, HARVARD UNIV. GRADUATE; There is no scripted reaction that you can have for being dehumanized by an authority figure.
WHITAKER: Black mistrust of the L.A.P.D. fueled the deadly riot of 1992. Current chief William Bratton has been applauded by blacks and whites for making racial fairness the centerpiece of his reform effort. Still, there`s a fine line between what some call profiling and others good policing.
ASST. CHIEF JIM MCDONNELL, LAPD: All aspects of sensitivity is in the back of the officer`s mind, but keeping himself and his partner and the community safe is paramount initially.
WHITAKER: When Barack Obama was elected president, there was much talk that the U.S. was becoming a post-racial society. The heated debate over this latest incident shows there`s still a long way to go.
CONNIE RICE, CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY: We need to understand how to recognize when race is operating at a subconscious level and also overtly. And I don`t think we are being honest with ourselves when we try to pretend it isn`t there.
WHITAKER: Right now we`re doing a lot of talking, but is anyone listening?
Bill Whitaker, CBS News, Los Angeles.
Honestly, does this help the situation...or further inflame it?
Does such reporting help to close the racial divide in our nation...or increase it?

Ah, the racism. Just look
July 24, 2009 - 10:02 ET by nolotrippenAh, the racism. Just look at that African American policeman stand arrogantly in front of his white police brothers as they person-handle a lowly Harvard professor.
So, yesterday in Simi Valley, I got hit, kicked, and strangled up by a black man, a hispanic (a cop no-less), a Latina woman, and some white youths. Of course, it was Krav Maga, but there must have been some racism in there somewhere.
YO MAMA!
July 24, 2009 - 10:07 ET by cvgbuckeyeYO MAMA! Now there is a high class Harvard Proff. Par for the course, if you ax me.
make a wish...
July 24, 2009 - 12:22 ET by AJBI wish, I wish that any police officer called by Gates in the future somehow find something better to do with their time than investigate his complaint. This goes doubly from any other race-baiters like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and even Obonzo the Simp. Don't like the police? Then please, officers, take a hint and get a coffee instead.
I agree with you AJB, but
July 24, 2009 - 18:44 ET by RukusI think the VAST majority of law enforcement are going to respond to those 911 calls and try to protect the citizens of their precincts. Unfortunately, I think they are gonna be called racist either way in today's PC world, sad. : (

The MSM
July 24, 2009 - 11:32 ET by iveseenitallMSM "liberalism" at its worst. On so many levels, this is a bogus story of profiling, white bigotry, or police brutality. It's a lie. Gates was clearly out of line. He started the trouble by refusing to show his ID. He brought up race. The policeman was polite and did everything according to the book. He was there in the first place in response to a burglary call. He was willingly putting himself in danger to protect the citizenry. And what did he get for it?--- a bigoted half-black president calling him stupid, the fear that his own job may be in danger and his stellar reputation tarnished, and the "jounalists" in this country all too willing to ruin him. Ironically, this IS a demonstration of the disgusting RACISM about which these hypocritc liars are complaining. Why did this guy single out the white cop when there was a black and an hispanic cop there too? Would he have done it to a black cop who acted the exact same way? Why did Barry bring up so-called "profiling"? Oh, I forgot-- blacks can't be racists --- But they can go for the kill when it comes to ruining a decent white man's life! All based on a LIE! Shades of Tawana Brawley and Al Sharpton! What a bunch of crap!
NEVER,NEVER, trust a "liberal"
ISIA,
July 24, 2009 - 12:25 ET by Indiana JoeI was wondering if the good Prof showed any ID which listed the address in question as his home. If not, how does the cop know WHO he is dealing with? He was responding to a call of "two black men breaking in" to a home. From what I can tell, the only "bigotry" in this story is the automatic assumption that all whites react purely on their inherent prejudices.
Now, THAT'S "racism."

There Are Tapes
July 24, 2009 - 10:23 ET by slickwillie2001Now confirmed that there are tapes of the entire incident, since the officer left his mike open on his radio and it was recorded. Quality unknown. If the tapes are released and they picked up Gates ranting like a lunatic while the officer is calm and collected, any case Gates thinks he has will evaporate.
The 911 tapes from the reporting citizen may also be released.

By all means, let's throw up there a dozen or so racial incidents involving blacks and the police!! Just in case anyone isn't outraged by this, let's show them that this has been going on forever, and this is just one more black man reviled and beaten up by the racist police!
And I won't even get into the subject of "subconscious racism.

The irony here
July 24, 2009 - 12:04 ET by KC MulvillePrejudice is when you treat an individual, not as an individual, but according to perceptions about the group as a whole. That's a logical fallacy.
Their method in this report is to be, ironically, prejudiced. They're not treating this as a unique episode, but one of a pattern. Then they assure us how unjust the pattern has been, and therefore by implication, they leave us with the conclusion that this episode showed injustice also.
They're combating prejudice by engaging in it themselves.
And they don't even realize they're doing it
July 24, 2009 - 12:16 ET by GalvanicCBS's prejudice is not unlike Senator Barbara Boxer's. In a hearing over cap-and-trade, Boxer was blasted by the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce when she quoted a report of the NAACP as a counter to his objections to cap-and-trade, as if to say "This is what black men think, so get with it and join 'em." He rightly blasted her racial bias and her demeaning attitude.
Neither CBS nor Boxer realize that they are prejudice . because they've bought into the whole leftist package that holds that the proper way to think is pre-determined by your race, age, and gender. They assess all behaviors through this cracked lens.
Very good, KC

This white guy
July 24, 2009 - 10:44 ET by Jack Hermanhad a similar occurance happen to him once. In my situation, my initial responses to the officer could have been considered, and were taken as obnoxious. At one point, the officer suggested I refrain from such comment or I could be arrested.
The difference was, I was smart enough to shut up and cooperate. Apparently, this "educated" Harvard professor isn't smart enough.
It's not about race. If ANYONE'S responses to an officer are obnoxious or rude (or racist in the case of this prof), you will be treated differently than if you are cordial. An EDUCATED Harvard prof should have known better.
One can be educated at a college or university, but they can't teach common sense or give someone the gift of intelligence. This occurance is evidence of that.
I think it's also time the gov't, business, and media get over the reverence which is given to Ivy league schools.
They are right
July 24, 2009 - 10:49 ET by iveseenitallObviously, some black's (and half-blacks) "subconsciously" see race in everything and racism everywhere. As we know from being in their classes, this is particulary true with many college "professors". Racism, Sexism, Communism, Socialism, Liberalism,---The "isms" rule the day on the campuses across America. (except Conservatism).
BTW, I see this guy Gates teaches at Harvard with only a BS degree. He tried law and Ph.D programs but dropped out of both. Could there be a little Affirmative Action "racism" at play here? Just sayin'...

Re Black Grievance Industry
July 24, 2009 - 11:09 ET by slickwillie2001The entire black grievance industry is a deadweight on our economy. The college hires a 'professor' to teach this crap, they have to buy the textbook that he wrote, they agitate to make the class mandatory, and they agitate to create a need for 'Diversity Awareness' training for corporations. A few of the students end up providing those courses, a few of them replace people like Gates when they retire, and they all end up thinking our country is racist. It's a micro-economy all by itself that produces nothing of value.
They just need to be angry . . .
July 24, 2009 - 13:00 ET by Galvanic"Obviously, some black's (and half-blacks) "subconsciously" see race in everything and racism everywhere."
That's the purpose of African-American studies programs on university campuses. Those who don't see it must be trained to see it in order to pass courses and escape ostricism of teachers and classmates. Critical thinking is not only discouraged, it's punished.
"As we know from being in their classes, this is particulary true with many college "professors". ---The "isms" rule the day on the campuses across America. (except Conservatism)."
With so much of academia detached from the real world, today's focus in those -isms is the culmination of decades of incestuous and lazy research and assumptions. The advocates of these -isms bascially write and lecture for each other, and to train younger generations in the art of -ism.
Check out Cornel West and Leonard "Ice People vs. Sun People" Jeffries.
"BTW, I see this guy Gates teaches at Harvard with only a BS degree."
He reminds me of "Professor" Ward Churchill, late of the University of Colorado. The heads of these ethnic studies departments are not selected for their academic credentials, but for their attitudes. Once they are hired, university authorities and faculty are loathe to even criticize them let alone fire them for legitmate fear of being branded as racists. Note how they excused Churchill's plagerism and fraudulent claims of native American heritage, until he became such a public embarassment that they had to act.

The race to exploit ...
July 24, 2009 - 10:59 ET by metaphorsbwithuThis is a classic example of how the media chooses to change the subject to advance their storyline.
The evidence will probably confirm that the police officer acted properly so the media template is to explain why Prof. Gates did not, in effect making him the victim, even though he escalated a benign situation ... much as the media did in excusing Rev. Wright after his teachings and opinions came to light.
Instead of highlighting and exposing real discrimination and racism, it instead creates yet more doubt as to the motives of those who would eploit the emotions and fears of people of good will.

The 'media' needs racism
July 24, 2009 - 10:59 ET by Willis_Leon_JohnsonPick your favorite racial riot in the last 70 years, research the'news media' for several weeks, or months, leading up to the riots and you will find they have been instigated by 'reporters' and the media specifically for the 'news' value.
The rodney king tapes were used by the media to encourage the belief that the police acted only out of racial rage, and only THOSE PARTS the media wanted the People to see were shown on TV.
The three places where you can guarantee racism every time you look is:
A. The 'news media'.
B. The democrat party.
C. Any racially segregated community with churches led by racist pastors such as jeremiah wright.
These groups feed off of, and NEED, racism in their lives to feel important.
In law enforcement agencies, you might find a racist cop in less than one percent of the precincts.

Obama, Gates, the MSM
July 24, 2009 - 11:15 ET by Airforce_5_Oare the ones fueling this thing. Obama should have shutup and stayed out of it. He openned his mouth and his foot just flew up and BAM, hit him square in the teeth!
I'm sorry but the only racism I see here is in the three named above because this was a white officer. Would Skip Gates have acted differently if it had been a black officer? How about a black female officer? We could what if this one all day, point being, Gate's escalated this to a "Black" thing. The President escalated this to a "National" thing. The MSM has escalated this to a "Big Story" thing.
Hey MSM, how about reporting this:

July 24, 2009 - 11:28 ET by Airforce_5_Othat President Obama wanted everyone to wait until all the evidence was in on Reverend Wright but rushes to call a cop or whole police department stupid before all the facts are in!

I am so mad about this whole thing I went and gave some money to the FOP last night to help them in defence of this officer because you know damn well that a civial law suit is on the way.
If I was this officer I would sue the President for his comments just on the principle of the whole thing.

July 24, 2009 - 11:33 ET by BlondeOf course he's being stupid. He's been stuck there for some time.
The only honorable way out for Obama is to quickly apologize to not only the officer, but to the department as a whole. And cops in general.
I wouldn't even slam him for saying something like "Professor Gates is my friend, so of course I took his side before knowing all the facts"....and leaving it at that.
But my guess is, it will be spin, spin, spin (can we get these dems to power our washing machines?) until Obama is forced to apologize, at which time he will throw his friend under the bus.
Any other outcome would shock me.
I hope he fails, too.

The Real Bamster
July 24, 2009 - 12:00 ET by slickwillie2001I think perhaps another reason the Bamster blew this question is that it was the first question in the 'press conference' that was not about healthcare. He probably knew that he was doing very poorly as the PC went along; he was relieved when a question not about healthcare came up, so he jumped into it without thinking, hoping to impress everyone with his knowledge of the case.
Had Axelrahm prepared this answer in advance, they would have written nothing like what he said. Because he was caught unprepared, we saw the real Bamster. Jeremiah Wright was right there beside him.

And here we go with the "subtle racism" / "racists don't know they're racist" psychobabble again, courtesy of Ms. Rice. Trotted out any time common sense, facts and logic interfere with a claim of racist behavior. The black female columnist from a few years back comes to mind, who wrote she was offended when blonde white women tousle their hair in front of her. That's " racially insensitive behaivor", etc etc.
Witness Bill Clinton being criticized by the black community and the msm for making racially insensitive remarks during the Dem primary: He called the very inexperienced Obama a "kid" and his voting record claims a "fairy tale".

July 24, 2009 - 12:07 ET by Airforce_5_OWhen I was taking some classes at Esat Carolina a couple years back one of my teachers said we had to go to a lecture he was giving and write a paper on it. Now this was a Teacher Devlopment Class.
I had really never paid attention to this man until that night. I was blow away at the hatred that came out of this guy. The lecture had nothing to do with Teacher Development at all. The Liberals at the lecture were just fawning over this guy afterward.
I wrote my paper and stated "For a man who stands for Racal equallity, why was he such a racist?"
WOW did that get a big reaction out of my instructor! We had a political "Disscussion" on how wrong I was. When it was said and done, she could not tell where in the lecture he said anything positive about race relations or white people. I also made it clear that she asked for and opinion paper and she got it.
After the class she pulled me to the side and stated I was the only one in the class who had written a negitive thing about Dyson. I told that I must have been the only honest one in the class because from talking from some of the other students in the class, a lot of them had felt the same way.
I got an "A" but I think she did it with her nose pinched.

Racism????
July 24, 2009 - 11:28 ET by BigMike252In 1992 Riots erupted in Los Angeles b/c Police Officers were aquitted in the Rodney King Case. The following are incidents commited by Mr. King after the riots:
In 1993, King entered an alcohol rehabilitation program and was placed on probation after crashing his vehicle into a block wall in downtown Los Angeles.
In July 1995, he was arrested by Alhambra police, who alleged that he hit his wife with his car, knocking her to the ground. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail after being convicted of hit and run.
On August 27, 2003, King was arrested again for speeding and running a red light while under the influence of alcohol. He failed to yield to police officers and slammed his SUV into a house, breaking his pelvis.
On November 29, 2007, while going home King was shot in the face, arms, back and torso with Birdshot by two thieves attempting to steal his bicycle, but his injuries were described as not life-threatening. (courtesy wikipedia)

Our president, who seems only able to make a speech by reading off a teleprompter, should never make comments about subjects he does not have all the information on. He even stated he was not there. That should have ended it. But no, he decided to comment, and now this officer, and his families safety, have been compromised. Good job Mr. President.

CBS conducts rear guard action while Obama withdraws
July 24, 2009 - 12:10 ET by GalvanicCBS News hopes to curry favor with the White House by dishing up another serving of advocacy journalism. Whitaker mixes facts with sentiments like "it still hurts."
Taking up the President's "I don't have the facts, but here's what happened" gaff on national television, CBS is providing background to rationalize or even justify the racist rants of Prof. Gates, the man the President called a 'friend.'
With CBS and other MSM performing a rear guard action, Obama is wisely and rapidly egressing from the battlefield, as evidenced by White House comments 'clarifying' his statement and stating that he'll comment no further on it. But it may not be so easy.
Obama has racially-profiled SGT Crowley based on incomplete evidence.
indulging in Gate Speech
July 24, 2009 - 12:35 ET by Jack BauerHere's the thing... someone is going to end up looking very stupid when the police recordings cvome out.
Now... Sgt. Crowley must have been aware that the incident was recorded when he made his comments.
I suspect Gates was not aware that HIS voice was recorded when he made HIS charges of racism.
In the 2 days since, Crowley's whole department has officially backed him to the hilt. National police organizations have also backed him 100%.
I'm thinking they all know something. Now.. they will have listened to the entire incident multiple times. So I am guessing that it backs up the Sergeant's recall to the letter.
If I were Gates, I'd be thinking of an exit strategy right about now.
Incidentally, this is all about CLASS, and not really race.
I've googled Gates -- and even sympathetic bios call this guy a huge, snob and elitist.
These people (I mean elitists of whatever color) secretly loathe working class folks. And cops are quintessential representatives of the working class, deep down.

what a load of crap
July 24, 2009 - 12:30 ET by UndercoverConservativea little over ten years ago I was working a crappy job that had me getting off work after midnight. The shortest way home had me going thru the Hilltop area of Tacoma WA.
I'd get pulled over twice a week for the 3 months I worked there. Why? Because I was the only "white" guy in the area. There was always an excuse of "we had a report of a vehicle like this in an accident earlier", etc. Twice it happened with a coworker I carpooled with who was as wholly "african american" as one could get. That one was supposedly due to a "report of a 'salt and pepper team' who'd committed a robbery in the area.
Funny none of the incidents referred to as the excuses showed up in the local police blotter. I gave up looking after the 5th profiling stop.
Annoying, but the bullsh*t these officers had to deal with was well known. I never started into the amateur civil rights crap and was treated courteously at each stop. Usually only took 5-6 minutes when it happened, which was still a shorter commute than going around.

July 24, 2009 - 16:29 ET by ckc1227"I'd get pulled over twice a week for the 3 months I worked there. Why?
Because I was the only "white" guy in the area. There was always an
excuse of "we had a report of a vehicle like this in an accident
earlier", etc."
I've had that happen too, lol. Twice. Both times white cops, and I'm a white guy. One time, the cop said there had been reports of vandalism or something in the area by people driving a red car....I was driving a white car, lol. The other time, the officer said there had been a car like mine reported stolen in the area, so he was checking to make sure I wasn't the thief.
They were both full of crap, and I knew it. They were looking for drunks returning home from the clubs.

He admits he doesn't have all the facts and then pronounces judgement. The Archie Bunker of liberalism has spoken his truth. We need some words for a parody of the theme song from All In The Family.

July 25, 2009 - 04:30 ET by Michael30Boy the way that Tupac played,
Back when President Clinton strayed,
Taxes were things not to be paid,
Those where the days.
And you knew that way back then,
It was all the fault of certain men,
Mister we could use a man,
Like reverend Sharpton again.
Grateful for the welfare state,
On food stamps but adding weight,
Someone else paid and wasn’t it great,
Those were the days.
Boy the way Obama won,
Must have been God’s second son,
Guys on Wall Street they are done,
These are our days.
And it’s clear like a window sill,
Our economy we cannot kill,
Mister we’ve been through this drill,
No reason to read this entire bill.
More pork than a bacon back,
Only the wealthy we attack,
Now we're all on the right track,
These are our days.
It all began at once one day,
President gave us a course to stay,
Debts we incur and can’t repay,
Those will be our days.
And soon we should learn Chinese,
They own our debt, if you please,
Social doctors was an ease,
Better avoid getting any disease,
Better bone up on Shari a Law,
A burka is much like a shawl,
Progress slows down to a crawl,
Can’t wait for those days…
Granted, this isn't exactly worthy of Shakespeare or the like, but you did say you wanted it to kind of match the All In The Family theme song, and I didn't have much time....

If only News Busted would have someone sing it!!!
Any takers on making a Youtube video??? We have the lyrics, we have the tune, now we need the voice! Karaoke anyone? We need a woman's voice to sound like Edith and one of us old farts to sound like Archie. This would be a howler.

kangaroo,
July 24, 2009 - 13:25 ET by Indiana JoeWhat I see is the cop by the mailbox holding his left hand palm down, thereby placing the thumb "on the inside," that is, towards the cop.
I agree it's a "calm down" sign. A palm-up would indicate a pleading gesture, at least to me.

July 24, 2009 - 15:49 ET by WisdomActually I think it was closer to 95%.
But what do you call it when 90% of one race votes for one side? You call that the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections where Gore and Kerry both had 90% of the black vote.
America not racist
July 24, 2009 - 17:08 ET by seven95% of the white H.S. Dropouts voted for Obama. This man is even cuffed with his hands in front, How special.
Looks like Obama knows these cops well They gave him 17 tickets that he only paid because he was running for pres. Talk about prejudice. 20 year old tickets. No one vetted him.
Pathetic
August 1, 2009 - 05:19 ET by ChesterBogusLook at you people.
Conservatives are the ones always talking about individual rights, privacy - I always read blog posts and comments from conservatives talking about gun rights and home defense. You people would shoot anyone that came into your home without permission.
And here is a prime example of everything you people stand against. Professor Gates is arrested IN HIS OWN HOME for doing nothing more than BEING LOUD IN HIS OWN HOME. Forget racial profiling, this was a police officer arresting a man for no real reason. A commentator on Fox News even pointed out that the officer was NOT given permission to entre Gates's home! According to FOX NEWS, Crowley broke Gates's FOURTH AMENDMENT RIGHTS. FOX NEWS said so, so it MUST be true, right?! (Or is Fox "librul media" too now? I can never keep up with your stupid conspiracy theories here.)
Point being, forget race - Professor Gates was mistreated. Why? Why was he arrested for being in his own home? Why were his Constitutional rights denied him?
Look, none of you know what it's like to be a minority. I live in a country where the people are truly prejudiced against white people. I know the sting of REAL racism (not that petty "reverse racism" you fools are always talking about). It makes you paranoid. You don't know what it's like to see a person shift their weight, or move away from you and NOT KNOW why they did it. The slightest movement becomes hostile in your mind. You KNOW that the people around you aren't out to get you, but you just can't tell anymore.
How would you react if someone arrested you in your own home? What if you were a minority and you just couldn't tell what people's motivations towards you were? I mean, look, if someone moves away from me on the train, I worry that they're racist - if someone came and arrested me in my own apartment, I would KNOW in my heart that they were racist, and it would hurt me terribly to experience that.
And, for your information, as a foreigner in this country, the police CAN search my home for almost any reason - if I ever leave home without my alien registration card, I am subject to any whim of the police. Do you know how that feels? To know if I make one mistake, forget my wallet just one time, I could be put in jail?
You don't know. And you don't understand where Gates is coming from. I know, as a white person, that cops don't bother me. I've been stopped so many times by police and let off with just a warning because I'm white. I know this. I know I will never be arrested in my own home back in America. But, unlike all of you, I DO know the fear and paranoia of being a minority and knowing that the police can do anything they want to you at any time.
Have some damned sympathy. Think about other people for once. Stop being so damned selfish and stop being hypocrites. A man's Consitutional Rights may have been violated and you call HIM the villain?
You're all fools.

August 1, 2009 - 13:23 ET by dscottGates was NOT arrested in his house, he was outside his house running his mouth to the point people were coming out to see what was going on. The race baiter, Gates, got just what he deserved.
