Should CBS fire "Late Show" host David Letterman over his disgusting remarks about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughter?

A couple of New York state lawmakers believe so.

As reported by MyFoxChattanooga.com Saturday:

New York State Assembleymen [sic] Gary D. Finch and Brian Kolb have called upon CBS executives to fire David Letterman after the late-night talk show host made jokes about the daughter of Alaska governor and former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, according to reports from Syracuse.com.

Here's what Finch sent to CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves:

Mr. Leslie Moonves, President & Chief Executive Officer
CBS Corporation
51 West 52nd Street
New York, New York 10019

Dear Mr. Moonves:

I am writing to insist that your primetime comedian David Letterman, the host of the Late Show, be fired.

Last week, Auburn, New York was honored to have Governor Sarah Palin celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Statehood of Alaska at the former home of Secretary of State William H. Seward. William Seward was instrumental in the purchase of the Alaskan territory from Imperial Russia.

While she was a guest of our state, Governor Palin, her daughter and all women, were subjected to Mr. Letterman's outrageous comments on national television. To make the situation more egregious, during Mr. Letterman's explanation of his remarks, he took the opportunity to continue making degrading comments toward women.

Mr. Moonves, once again I am calling on you to cancel David Letterman's contract and send a clear message that you, the CBS Network and all its affiliates do not find insulting women acceptable.

Sincerely,

Gary D. Finch
Member of Assembly

Syracuse's Post-Standard quoted Kolb:

"That Mr. Letterman thought it somehow acceptable to make light of the serious crime of statutory rape and demean the 14-year-old daughter of a sitting governor whose family was visiting our state is outrageous."

Readers are not advised to hold their breath waiting for such an outcome.

I always admire people of courage that take courageous stands.

These lawmakers qualify.

Al, Bring Your Bullhorn

It won't go anywhere if Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton aren't on board.

That won't happen as her

That won't happen as her name isn't Tawanna Brawley.

When the people fear the government it's called tyranny, when the government fears the people it's called liberty!

Get over it

Letterman may be a misinformed Lefty crank...but this is going too far. Let Imus have his "nappy headed hoe" and let Letterman have his "slutty" moments. It is OUR CHOICE to not watch them. It is OUR CHOICE to pressure advertisers. We DO NOT NEED THE STATE to be our nanny.

Edit: to be fair, the lawmakers only asked the execs to fire him which I guess makes for a good way to raise the visibility of Letterman's idiocy.

Totally Agree

I only wish that people would get this upset EVERYTIME a comedian made a denegrating remark about women. Guess it only matters when Sarah Palin is the target.

Bitterness and hatred is not becoming to the media

No, it only matters when Sarah Palin and her family are targeted without mercy over and over again! It is obscene and EVERYONE knows it. It is time for it to stop.

I dont' know that he should be fired

Certainly, something should be done to "punish" Letterman for his crass remarks, but if CBS were to cancel his show over this, the left-wingers would find even more reason to go after Palin over it.

Must Be Done

By demanding Letterman be fired we highlight the hypocrisy of the left who chased Don Imus from his job, yet don't require action against Letterman. Whether anything is done or not, we need to point this out.

Great point FM! That is exactly the point that needs to be made

"Whether anything is done or not, we need to point this out."

Kudos to you Noel for bringing us the information.

Exactly. If CBS wants to be consistent, Letterman should be

fired. Not that I think tastelessness is an offese worthy of dismissal, but isn't that why they fired Imus?

Imus was fired

Imus was fired because Sharpton and Jackson intimidated his superiors into firing him. They were afraid of being labeled "racist" if they didn't unload him.

When the tables were turned

When the tables were turned and the joke was re-written implying A-Rod
knocked up Letterman's dog-faced wife, A-Rod was heard to say, "Are you
nuts?? I wouldn't hit that broad with Derek Jeter's bat!!!"

"I'm baackk... "

Well of course we won't

Well of course we won't hold our breath because it is never going to happen, nevertheless...good for these men...more people need to do so...that's what I have been waiting for.

If any conservative talking head on television had said this they would have already been down the drain by now.

Especially the way Letterman made hay out of his false apology...for more attention, which he recieved too.

It's a sad world we live in at times.

Remember Jamie Foxx?

Foxx said on his radio show that he was disgusted with Miley Cyrus and her wholesome image. He said that she should 'start doing crack and making porn movies'.

Cyrus' father very correctly excoriated Foxx, saying that if a white comedian has said that about his black daughter, he wouldn't think it was funny.

Foxx pulled the same lame dodge that Letterman has pulled, saying he was 'only joking' and that Cyrus was a 'public figure'. But no one defended him, because he was flat out WRONG to say such stupid things.

Major media is on the wane. They used to be great, and now their mighty empire is crumbling because more and more people are seening just how idiotic, petty, small-minded and ignorant these media figures are - both in 'news' and in the 'entertainment' industry. (quotes added because the news doesn't report news anymore, they editorialize. And entertainment isn't entertaining anymore - it's crass, vulgar and vile)

And they know it. But again, Rush was right. He's always said that whenever a liberal is wrong, and being crushed because of their wrongness, they respond by doing more of the same, only louder and more obnoxiously.

And hark how right he was. Instead of taking Letterman to task for his insane ramblings, his media buddies are trying to circle the wagons around him.

All right you Obama media slaves - so, your only requirement for whether or not you can say a woman's daughters are getting 'knocked up' at baseball games is that she's 'putting herself out there'? So simply being in the news means that a woman is fair game to be called 'slutty'?

How about Oprah? Or Michell Obama? They're 'putting themselves out there', right? They're 'famous'. They're 'public figures'. Can a conservative commentator call them 'slutty'? How about Sotomoyor? She's putting herself out there too, right? And Nancy Pelosi. Maybe their daughters and Obama's daughters are getting knocked up at baseball games too.

Oh, don't worry - it's just 'joking'. It's just 'being funny'. You liberal types are too sensitive - you need to learn to laugh at yourselves and your slutty-with-knocked-up-daughters political figures. Where's the laughter...?

Is David Letterman still alive? Who knew?

Haven't watched Letterman since I was in college in the 80's. After he started taking cheap shots at Palin last year, I checked him out. It was painful and I was almost embarrassed for him. Almost.

Hmmmm

So why isn't Fox News, et. al. going after Jamie Foxx with the same gusto? Now, isn't that called hypocrisy?

I guess you don't watch FNC

O'Reilly and Hannity were all over Jamie Foxx's comments.

Letterman should not be fired

What he said was profoundly stupid and offensive, but I don't like to see people lose their jobs over things they have said, even if it is people I don't like or agree with.

We have enough threats to the our 1st Amendment rights as it is. Threatening people's livelihoods in order to keep them "in line" is just another brick along the path to fascism.

We are far enough along that path already.

I agree

I'm not a big believer in firing someone for their beliefs, or even their hatreds. After all, Olbermann is still on the air, and you can't get more hateful than that idiot. Letterman proved himself a jerk. It's up to him to apologize or remain a jerk.

For me, the best outcome here is for America to realize how unfair these on-air liberals are. They ridicule and humiliate conservatives for political reasons, not because they're performing any social function. We've all heard about studies that show that Americans, especially young Americans, get their political perspective from late night comics.

That alone is an embarrassing indictment against America's educational system. History and political science professors yak away, but jokewriters have more effect on the nation's students! Wow...

So, keep Letterman right where he is. Let all those kids see what kind of moron is "shaping their worldview."

The real reason...

...that we should demand his firing is to highlight the left's hypocrisy and that of CBS. Remember this is the same network that drummed Don Imus off the air. Not that I disagree with your thinking, but we know Letterman's not going anywere and calling for his ousting helps show people what pathetic hypocrites liberals are.

Good one Balboa!

"And of course these lawmakers are doing this because of their strong personal convictions, not for attention, right?"

That is correct our NB's own liberal idiot!

yes, he should be fired

yes, he should be fired because CBS should grow a concience and decide they do not want to support this kind of behavior. It has nothing to do with freedom of speach, it has to do with the microphone. I can speak in these forums all day long, just like letterman, but I can not speak on his show, probably never. Television has nothing to do with free speach. Besides, no speach is truely free, it is paid for by the men and women who put on the uniform every day, men like Gov. Palin's son.

"Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it?...I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom.... deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall."

Disagree Amber

"Television has nothing to do with free speach."

The reason why we all have such a great selection of things to watch on tv from MTV to the the 700 Club, it all comes down to free speech.

He had my vote

no it isn't, if it were,

no it isn't, if it were, Palin's words would be spoken and discussed in an edjucated manner , instead they slam her because she dares speak, same with Limbaugh, same with Preajan, the media and most television is about twisting speach or lying about it, of others in order to push their own ajenda. The media is all for the "fairness doctrine" the network heads are all for the "fairness doctrine" they all loved "McCain-Feingold". The very essence of what television of today stands for is silencing speach they do not agree with.

Amber

I never said I disagreed with you about the double standard, I said I disagree with you that television has nothing do with free speech.

He had my vote

I am not talking about a

I am not talking about a double standard. The MSM and many network head support furthuring a restricted free speach, if it is about free speach then it would be supporting free speach, not openly opposing it.

my goodness I am making a lot of typos today. My pinky and ring finger has been numb all day and it is making it difficult to feel the letters.

Someone should inform these

Someone should inform these NY Lawmakers, that technically Letterman is not an employee of CBS. He owns his own production company and has a 'contract' with CBS and unless that joke was a violation of that contract he cannot be terminated for that specific thing.

Do we need to send Professsor Kingsfield their way?

Nearly every contract I've

Nearly every contract I've seen has had some sort of "moral terpitude" clause.

Given the amount of money CBS pays to Letterman, via his production company or whatever, I would think that the CBS shills would ensure their client have a way to terminate Dave/production company if Dave misbehaves enough, such as calling for President Bush's death or DUI with vehicular homicide or admiting enjoying child porn. Otherwise, CBS may open themselves up to litigation and financial loss via advertisers, investors and the FCC.

What clause do you think they terminated Imus on?

My state allows for "no cause" firing. But, if you are fired for "cause" such as moral terpitude, certain financial obligations are triggered or not depending on the which side the party resides. In effect, the terminated party is further punished and the terminating party gains further protections.

Didn't Imus actually sue

Didn't Imus actually sue successfully to reverse that firing?

I don't know. Did Imus

I don't know.

Did Imus leverage his contract terms in his lawsuit to win?

Yes he won and the terms

Yes he won and the terms were not disclosed, but it was rumored to be millions.

Jeapordy?

Is it just me, or is Letterman starting to look more and more like Alex Trebec? If he grew a moustache, I'd have trouble telling them apart.

Trebec is another Bush-hating liberal with a chip on his shoulder - maybe Trebec's and Letterman's mothers both got 'knocked up' by the same guy during some baseball game...

Enough already

I can't believe the people calling for Letterman to be fired and this PC running amoke has got to stop.

I didn't agree that Imus should have been fired and don't agree with Letterman being fired.

Want to not watch CBS or boycott it's adveristers? Fine that is your right, but every single person calling for Letterman to be fired I consider to be the same as those who supported Imus being fired or for those calling to silence people like Rush on the radio.

There is free speech for all or you are just a hypocrite like most liberals I know.

how does fireing him remove

how does fireing him remove his right to speak freely? It doesn't, it only removes his right to speak on CBS, a right that is not granted under the constitution, a right neither you or I have.

Firing Letterman would not

Firing Letterman would not be economically prudent for CBS, which is one of the main reasons why it won't happen.

this has nothing to do with

this has nothing to do with my comment

However, I disagree with you. There are plenty of performers who could do a better job than Letterman. Letterman is vile and boring. Ferguson is even better.

Unknown vs. known. They know

Unknown vs. known. They know how much Letterman makes them right now. Even using an established name is a gamble. The only sure thing would be to take Leno away from NBC, which they would never let happen.

Firing is Free Market

Calling for the firing of Letterman and boycotting cbs and their sponsors is an action of the free market by a free people. There is nothing pc or hypocritical about it. I want Letterman and a long list of talking heads, producers, and excecs. fired because they don't tell the truth, they are not fair and balanced and they use the power of the media to influence legislation that effects the way i live, and to effect the wellbeing and security of this country. By protesting and boycotting the msm and making them pay a personal price is the only way i know to return to a fair, honest, and balanced media. Thats what i believe, i will stand for it and i will support those who are likeminded

George Custer thought he was taking the high road until he wound up at the Little Big Horn, which led to his famous last words; "Where did all those --------- Indians come from".

Letterman is a deranged slob

- and his stale schtick's about as funny as a train wreck. I say give Todd Palin five minutes alone with this creep- maybe then he'd get the hard education in moral clarity that he so severely lacks.

If Sarah Palin is SO silly and irrelevant, why the obsession? Clearly the Left noted her appeal, and are out to eliminate the threat- it’s not like it’s not obvious.

And she’s been highly successful in life while ignoring the left-wing feminist model… this helps to explain the extra dose of venom in the attacks.

Go get em, Sarah- and don’t mind the press, nobody will be listening to them anymore after the pending Obamamania implosion-
