Virtually every time oil and gasoline prices rose when George W. Bush was in the White House, his policies and/or his connections to folks in the oil industry were blamed by newsrooms from coast to coast.
Yet, even though oil has doubled in price since Inauguration Day, with retail gas prices up $0.75 a gallon, you'd be hard-pressed to find reports blaming these spikes on President Obama or anything he's done since taking office.
Why?
Before you answer, take a look at the following crude oil chart:
On January 19, crude was $34.78. On Friday, it closed at $68.44, a virtual doubling in only four and a half months.
Although oil prices certainly rose during the Bush years, there was never such a fast doubling as what we've seen since Inauguration Day.
As for prices at the pump, the national average was $1.85/gallon on January 19. Today's average is $2.60.
But that doesn't tell the entire story, for the wholesale gas price was about $1.10 before Inauguration Day. With its $1.95 close on Friday, Americans could be seeing $3 at the pump soon; we in California already are.
With this in mind, given the constant lambasting Bush used to get concerning rising energy prices, will Obama and his policies be similarly blamed?
Or will this be another thing the Obama-loving press gives him a pass for?

I hope he fails, too.
I believe Obama wants gas
June 6, 2009 - 22:57 ET by GregEI believe Obama wants gas prices as high as they can be. Dick Morris said that Clinton was checking gas prices daily because he knew how negative it could be for him politically if it went too high. But, we weren't being bombarded back then by "green" this and "green" that, and a push for a "green" economy as the "solution our economic crisis."
So with the major "green" push, crude oil and gas prices have to be as high as they can be to make that push easier to do. Obama is currently still popular, and he knows this, which is why high gas prices don't scare him like they did Clinton. Clinton may have been popular, but he didn't have the massive "green" push that high gas prices would help to promote.
And sad to say, that $4 gas we saw last year may be surpassed in the near future. If bad global economy made the demand go down and the prices also go down, why are they going up now? The global economy is still bad, and crude has doubled? Sooooo, at what price will crude be when the global economy actually turns UPWARD again and creates a higher demand for the stuff?
When that happens, we might be HOPING to go back DOWN to $4 per gallon, but I can guarantee that Obama and Co. will be cheering with every penny it moves upward, behind closed doors of course.
Obama WANTS expensive gas
June 7, 2009 - 19:47 ET by mbuelBefore the election he was asked what he thought of the high gas prices:
"Well they need to be that high, but I wouldn't have had them rise that fast."
Are they going to do anything to lower the price of gas? HELL NO.
1) Inflationary spending is going to cause the increase to triple. Obama has made the US dollar WORTHLESS.
2) CRAP AND TRADE, is going to destroy the energy economy in our country.
Obama is currently still popular but will he be when we go into the beginning of hyper inflation next year?

Are they going to do
June 7, 2009 - 21:12 ET by GregEAre they going to do anything to lower the price of gas?
ONLY if it was necessary to have a political prop-up. But even then, they couldn't lower the price. What they WOULD do feed us a BS line of how hard they are working to do so.
Obama is currently still popular but will he be when we go into the beginning of hyper inflation next year?
If Americans are awakened by that, the kiss it all goodbye because if politicians see America still loving The One, then The One and Co. will feel more invincible than they do now. Hugo Chavez will be the conservative in a head-to-head.
LoL
June 12, 2009 - 13:31 ET by mbuelIt's funny that you mention Chavez as being more to the right of Obama. There was an article from the state run media in China, where they were stating how great capitalism is at generating wealth and freedom.
Can you imagine an article like that from the NY TIMES? how sad is that, that our country that CREATED this huge leap in personal and economic freedom is on it's way to becoming more oppressed than China?

Obama and the SCM don't care if oil prices triple
June 6, 2009 - 12:41 ET by R D HelmIn fact, they would prefer it that way.
Whatever piddling economic "recovery" we were headed for will most assuredly be choked off by the high price of oil, which I expect will closely emulate that of last year, thus causing another economic downturn early next year.
That may just be the one that sinks us.
Thanks to Obama, we can't drill here for ourselves, but the Mexicans and the Cubans are currently sucking our own oil right out from under us and the American sheeple remain blissfully oblivious to it all.
Maybe they will catch on when we hit a full-bore enonomic depression?
Nahh, they will be too into next season's American Idol to even notice.
As for those who kinda, sorta are paying attention, why do they still operate under the delusion that this particular government is trying to improve this economy?

Dave - maybe you can
June 6, 2009 - 22:09 ET by AlanaDave - maybe you can explain this for me. I always thought: Oil doesn't arrange itself underground according to which country sits on top of it, so isn't it true that other countries could be getting oil that actually sits partly under our territory?
And - I've always thought - even if it didn't sit partly under their territory, what would keep the country next door from scooting its lines over to tap oil underneath us?
In other words, I always looked at all those "no drill" maps as meaning - well, we can't get it, but anybody nearby can help themselves.
Is this true?
Alana...
June 7, 2009 - 00:54 ET by zeestephenMost of the world's oil is not in giant pools that can be drained out from many miles away.
Oil tends to be in relatively small pockets, many wells are usually required to extract it, and the wells need to be reasonably close to the largest deposits.
There is really only one internationally disputed oil field in the USA, and that's in the Gulf of Mexico, where several countries have overlapping claims.
And, in the very long term, most of the world's oil will rise to the Earth's surface and evaporate, or dissolve in water, or be consumed by bacteria.
Think of the La Brea tar pits in L.A., or the "leaky" oil fields in the Pacific Ocean off Santa Barbara, or the "Tar Sands" in western Canada.
In geologic history, more oil has been expelled from the Earth's crust by natural processes than man has drilled in the last 150 years.

In the not too distant future, he's going to push Congress to propose some bill to bail out California. Imagine, citizens from 49 sovereign states being forced to pay for the idiocy of one state.......a state which has spent itself into the dirt, a state that celebrates illegal immigration and seizes it's citizenry's money to pay for their healthcare, schooling, etc etc.......a state that has vast offshore energy sources they could use and sell but they'd rather be $40 billion in the red and let major dollars sit idle under the sea floor. That's just STUPID. I can't just go file bankruptcy if I have lots of assets and money. I first have to use my assets and my money. The commodities speculation market cost saudis 500 million on the way down last year in trading losses. Soros sold short. some I am told sell naked shorts. Spinning
June 6, 2009 - 13:19 ET by PianobuffMost of the spin I'm reading in the left blogs comes in two flavors:
1) Gas is too cheap and we're paying too little for it. The rise is a good thing to get our focus on green energy and to discourage us from using energy
2) The comparison is unfair because leading up to summer prices always rise and to use Jan-June data is cherry-picking.
The second amuses me, because I thought they LOVE hockey stick diagrams.

June 6, 2009 - 13:52 ET by ThisnThatTime to call the oil executives in to Congress -- and then blast them if they used any oil or gas getting there.
Congress will decide that the oil industry isn't going its job. Obama will call the executives in and tell them "The only thing standing between you and the pitchforks is me".
Then we'll nationalize the oil industry -- just like Chevez -- and the MSM will celebrate and truely call Obama God, not sort of a God.

Another pass for Obama. The Media crucified Pres Bush for Oil Prices. Oil was $85 in Jan08 and rose to $126 by Jun08- a 48% increase.
Now we have Obama...Oil prices increase 98% in the same period from JAN to JUN and the Media is where??? If they would report on the percentage increase and overlook the price maybe the MSM wouldn't look so stupid by denying the truth. Look at the Stock Market and the MSM will report on the percentage increase as if the economy is turning around- the Stock Market went from 6547 to 8762 a 34% increase but only a 2215 pt increase- the MSM overlooks how high it was when Pres Bush was in office- 14164- a drop of 38% but a huge 5400 pt drop to the current number. Great Change!

At this pace if nothing is done to change the trajectory of the price increase we are looking at $100/barrel oil by January. The economy will crash and burn yet again because of the drilling ban.
