Google Finally Recognizes Memorial Day With Holiday Logo

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

As NewsBusters has regularly reported, internet behemoth Google, despite recognizing such important American events as Giovanni Schiaparelli and Charles Darwin's birthdays with special logos, has never done anything to commemorate Memorial Day.

Well, whether they succumbed to the pressure, or are feeling more patriotic with Barack Obama in the White House, Google has finally done something to recognize America's fallen soldiers along with the rest of the country.

Yet, unlike the elaborate logos for other events deemed important, Google on Monday displayed a little yellow ribbon under the search field (actual size right, h/t NBer R D Helm).

Yep -- that tiny ribbon.

Compare that to the fuss they made over Dr. Seuss's birthday in March:

Well, a company has to have its priorities.

How many times

How many times could you listen to your child tell you "I only got 2 sprinkles on my icecream. HE GOT FOUR!" ?

I'm guessing 64.

Fair is a place they judge livestock.

I didn't leave the Republican party, they kicked me out.

Yeah Shawn, we would never

Yeah Shawn, we would never expect them to acknowledge men who have made the ultimate sacrifice so they could go about their normal business day.

Heaven help them that they get this profound opportunity in the good ol' United States. Fair, yeah that's fair.  It's fair to them some man in some distant battlefield gave his life so they can continue to forget and not honor them.  One day in their worthless year.  Most Americans honor them year round every day.  I can see how Google would be put out by one day.

Just one in a long line of reasons why I refuse to use Google.  There are many other search sites I use. Why anyone would even want to sacrifice anything for these louses, much less lay down their lives is beyond me.  And this is from a father who's sons have recently been in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan.  My sons are better men then I.  I guess my lessons took.

Google Memorial Day logo...

Could it be any smaller???

Well, at least the brilliantly creative minds at Google deigned to do a Memorial Day logo this year...Lucky us...I actually wrote them last year to complain that they had never done a logo for Memorial Day, and to ask why they hadn't...Of course, I never received any response. And while I do love Dr. Seuss, I think Memorial Day should be a bit higher on anyone's list of important occasions to mark with a special logo. I do think it is very interesting that Google chose to mark the federal republic of Germany's 60th anniversary of it's constitution on May 23rd, but didn't until this year, finally come up with a logo for this country's Memorial Day...See this webpage-  http://www.google.com/logos/index.html

Go figure...

I will say it... I have an intuitive distrust of Google

Fact of life: Google is by far and away the most prominent website on the Internet, with regard to searching, email, etc.

I usually don't distrust monopolies, per se, as long as the playing field is equal for all. To that end, I am as Libertarian as I can be.

The reason I have a distrust of Google is that I see the shift of technologies with regard to media. We are migrating, quite rapidly I might add, from a centralist, rigidly heiarchical setup to a very intertwined, direct method of communication involving the Internet. Television, personal calls, news, and in fact all forms of communication outside of our personal sphere are part of one big broad network.

I do know that the Google owners are very much leftists in their own right. That is why Obama has chosen them to be part of his economic nonsense.

The ads, though, troubled me more, as there was a subtle yet strong message that a potential for suppression of thought and of communication may be forthcoming. Believe me, I am by no means a conspirationalist in the classically neurotic sense, but rather one who has strong "vibes" based on empirical knowledge of human nature, as well as of the history of leftist politics.

I hope I am wrong, to be honest. And I admit I cannot quantify such an attempt to take over the way of thinking that conservatives feel. But in the overall scheme of things, I am actually more concerned about the potential of the Internet to come under heavy regulation than for the "Fairness Doctrine" to attempt to reappear.

In short, the future is for instant, globally/local method of communication known as the Internet, and hopefully we can provide it's open nature as much as possible without commandeering ideas by the communist Dems.

Google is way left

have been for a very long time.  All the majot search engines are left, but google is the worst.  I quit using them years ago.

Does anyone know of a fair and balanced search engine?  I have looked, but with no success.

GoodSearch

Don't know how balanced it is politically, but I use GoodSearch as it gives to the charity of your choice. My pick was the Salvation Army.

I've been using Altavista. Haven't noticed anything yet.

You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

Google's in a no win

Google's in a no win situation here. No matter what they did, it would have been wrong.

I'll bite. How could

I'll bite.

How could something comemorating this country's fallen with something at least as eye catching as Dr. Seus' birthday have been wrong?

Then it would have been seen

Then it would have been seen as ostentatious and not appropriate for the day, showing how out of touch Google is, etc.

Done

No - it wouldnt have.  To suggest otherwise is disingenuous and disrespectful.  I'm done with this and won't contribute any further to the use of our fallen to help you make your trollish points.  Have a great and freedom filled day.

It's not trollish. I simply

It's not trollish. I simply don't think a Memorial Day tribute by Google would ever be seen as completely appropriate by this website.

Well here you go again, bal. I would have appreciated Google

honoring our troops and recognizing them.  Since they are immature and childish little children over there running the show they have no concept of those who protect them and their freedoms.

What?

Spoken like a typical liberal, good grief. Do the folks a google get paid for Memorial day , what about Dr Seuss "day"?

I found it

reprehensible that Google placed a tiny yellow ribbon where they did, and I let Google know just that. I e-mailed and called the offices, and, of course got no response. This company is in bed with the Obama administration, along with GE; and that can only be a bad thing for our personal privacy rights in the future.

President Obama is nothing more than a lying empty suit; a Hollywood style special effects smoke and mirrors show that has shown itself to be a total fraud.

Don't use google anymore.  Ask.com had a nice field of poppies

Google is EVIL

Google is evil, and their far-left political bias is a matter of record. The sooner a competitor takes them down, the better for the internet and for political dialogue in our world. If a new competitor simply advertised one of their benefits as a political balance in search results and no bias, that would be a big first step in their acceptance.

Brin and Page

Founders of Google. Picked their CEO, Eric Schmidt, A very good friend of  Democrats which includes Obama, not only for his techno and business saavy but also for his liberal politics. Is it any wonder the military get short shrift from them.

That itty-bitty, teeny-tiny, damn near invisible yellow ribbon

...was personally offensive to me, and as most of you know, I don't get offended very easily.

Memorial Day to me is a day when we honor all of our military veterans, but particularly those who gave their lives so that the people at Googlehave the freedom to be small-minded, offensive a-holes.

Our dead Amerian heroes deserved better.

Much better.
