Here's a headline you'd never expect to see at a left-of-center website so soon in the new President's first term:
Some on Left Souring on Obama
Maybe even more shocking was the content in Josh Gerstein's Politico piece that was so prominently placed as the feature story on the site's front page Sunday:
Barely four months into his presidency, Obama is confronting growing dissatisfaction among members of his liberal base, who feel spurned by a series of his early decisions on issues ranging from guns to torture to immigration to gay rights.
The list got longer last week as Obama reversed his earlier decision to release photos of detainees abused in U.S. military custody and announced plans to try some terror suspects before military commissions – though on the campaign trail he railed against earlier versions of the tribunals.
A few, like MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, have even hurled the left’s ultimate epithet – suggesting that Obama’s turning into George W. Bush.
“Even though I think he can get away with a more centrist candidate, he has to be careful not to be spitting in the eyes of his base,” said Laura Murphy, a lobbyist and former head of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Washington office.
“He’s got to be concerned about the cumulative impact dampening the energy and enthusiasm he needs for the midterm elections,” Murphy said. “If he doesn’t sustain a sizeable Democratic majority, he’s going to have a hard time finishing his very big agenda.”

I'm not all that impressed
May 17, 2009 - 12:58 ET by balboaI'm not all that impressed by Obama. Granted, we're not very far into his term, but I don't see a whole lot being accomplished, nor signs that there's a whole lot going on.

May 17, 2009 - 13:47 ET by balboaLike I said, I'd imagine it's hard to get a whole lot done in that time, but I'd like to see a more tangible recovery plan than just "We're gonna spend a whole lot of money." I think I would rather see Obama be all business than spending time on brackets and Leno. I don't think in the long run that means much -- like Bush's many vacations -- but it would be nice to see less pomp and circumstance and more sleeves being rolled up, saying to America "Let's work hard to get out of this." I'd like to see him downplay the whole "savior" angle, tell America, "I'm no superhero".
That probably doesn't help much.
Right bal
May 17, 2009 - 13:52 ET by Cool ArrowAnd since all he's spent thus far has been Bush's TARP program, all he's doing is sitting on a load of taxpayer money, deciding which way to fling it.
I'd just as soon he cancelled the whole grab bag.

May 17, 2009 - 15:52 ET by Chris NormanI think a lot more emotion than practical thought went into peoples decision to vote for Obama - at least the idea that anyone could cure the country's ills quickly was emotional. We will come out of this recession, not because of all the spending (all that can do is temporarily alleviate the symptoms), but because it's a cycle. However, I'm afraid that this orgy of spending and government control will permanently and negatively affect economic growth in the future. How many times must the bad results be experienced before this country learns that artificial over-interference in the economic/social marketplace is never a good idea?
The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.
Your mistake is in assuming...
May 17, 2009 - 20:23 ET by Tailgunner...that Obama wants a 'recovery'.
Remember 'Never let a crisis go to waste'?
This massive budget is not intended as stimulus.
It's meant to:
-pay off his contributors and supporters,
-strongarm states into surrendering their constitutional autonomy under the Tenth Amendment,
-purchase his own private armies through billions of dollars to 'community' groups such as ACORN and 'AmeriCops',
-tinker with banks and corporations like a kid with a new set of Legos, and
-create enormous new statist entitlement programs which every President, Democrat or Republican, will have to finance at the cost of defense, intelligence, and other required budgets.
I don't know how you managed to slip 'Bush's many vacations' into that post. I see no relevance for it and must chalk it up as just another liberal cheap shot...kind of like me mentioning 'Bill, Monica and the cigar'.
And if Obama doesn't have the 'savior' angle...then he's got nothing.
He'd be just another crooked, classless, lying, hypocritical, Chicago-style Democrat thug politician.

May 17, 2009 - 13:27 ET by R D HelmSince he took office, he has bankrupted the treasury, essentially taken effective control over the country's financial system, and is also going to start limiting the salaries of those in not just the financial industry, but outside of it as well. He has embarked on a money-printing orgy that is going to cause economy-crippling inflation in the very near future.
He has taken effective ontrol over two of the nations's three automakers, he is very close to completing a total government takeover of our healthcare system, and has dissed every single one of our traditional allies, including Israel, who it looks like he is about to throw under the bus.
Hell, George Soros must be positively ecstatic at Obama's stunning "progress" in turning this nation into a third-rate global also-ran.

Obama's performance so far
May 17, 2009 - 13:36 ET by KC MulvilleIt's simply not possible for anyone to fulfill all of the dreams of people who were projecting their dreams on his in the first place.
There are two dimensions by which you judge a president: by his policies and by his behavior. I oppose most of his policies, but I support some. His behavior has been exactly what I expected: inexperienced, and to make mistakes. For example, I'm glad he reversed his decision to release the photos, but he shouldn't have made that decision in the first place. He shouldn't have released the memos. He shouldn't have proclaimed that he was closing Gitmo before he figured out what to do with the prisoners.
The same people protesting his decisions are in the same position Obama was before the election: ignorance. It's easy to throw slogans around when you don't have to be responsible for it.
Gee, only too a few months
May 17, 2009 - 14:00 ET by StarAZFor those of us who never "got" him from the jump, could not figure out what he had really done, and seemed for some strange reason to be immune to his hotness, brilliance and lightbringing, this is a little shocking to hear. Of course, he could not be what people projected on him, we knew that--but I really think he is play-both-sides politician with a good speechwriter (though that dude seems like a dopey juvenile to me). Now we will all have to live with what we've got.
Re Obama's Performance
May 17, 2009 - 14:01 ET by slickwillie2001Yep, I saw a panel on Lou Dobbs the other night praising the Bamster for 'learning while in office' re his reversal on the photos. In other words, for his on-the-job training incompetence, all with the not so subtle implications that President George W. Bush refused to learn from his mistakes.
So the Bamster ends up with the same policy that President George W. Bush had, after the Bamster fumbles around in a couple of months of trial-and-error, and the Bamster is praised for that? And President George W. Bush is still cursed by the old media for his correct policy?
This is the twilight zone folks.

KC
May 17, 2009 - 15:38 ET by doug1950I agree. He looks inept and appears to be fumbling around trying to look like he is doing something tangible. Rearranging the furniture in the WH is not what we need right now. Tweaking and poking at the financial institutions of the nation all the while the bus is careening closer to the edge of the drop off. Diddling around in the auto industry and turning his minions lose to cheerlead is not leadership. His inexperince is showing all over the place and the media has all their sweat pumps on line and running trying to stay ahead of him to clear away or explain away his gaffs, not to mention his VPs constant propensity for hoof in mouth. This whole administration is disjointed and looks like a drunk on a Tilt-a-Whirl. Never having run any business in his life, even so much as a lemonade stand, his clumsiness at handling the economy just amplifies his inexperience. His staff and cabinet of "experts" are no better. The blind leading the blind....they all end up in the ditch. Unfortunately, we are all in the back seat of the thing while it is going into the ditch.
The effects won't show up for years
May 17, 2009 - 16:03 ET by KC MulvilleThe sheer amount of money spent will keep the economy from complete collapse for a while. However, Obama's hoping that in the meantime, he can cull enough savings from a new healthcare plan to replace the lost funds. It ain't going to happen.
What's worse, it didn't have to happen. I'm no economic genius (my bank account balance can attest to this), but I've become persuaded that the initial bailout of the banks was, on the whole, a necessary move. I hate the idea, but Bernanke's arguments overcame my subconscious loathing of bailouts. But the initial bailout was all that was needed. The banks stabilized, and the economy began to respond. All the other trillions that Obama spent weren't necessary, and they'll come back to us in the form of inflation in a couple years.
The inexperience shows, like a doctor who saw that morphine helped, so he prescribed gallons of it.

Food for thought to those who did support Obama for Pres.
Do not forget that Republicans want inner city children to have vouchers to pay for a real education at a REAL school for their children with teachers who actually care. If I lived in the inner city as a parent or child that would be a priority for me!
Democrats will sacrifice inner city children on the alter of the NEA teachers unions as a pay off for their dues and votes. For the democrats it's all about power and not really caring about your constituents... unless you offer them something in return, of course.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA
Dear President Obama, You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and, unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.
You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core.
You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America ' crowd and deliver this message abroad.
You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.
Remember, only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier
Thanks for sharing

Obama ran as a 'cloud'
May 17, 2009 - 14:26 ET by MidAmericaObama ran as a 'cloud' candidate. That is, he encouraged people to see what they wanted to see. The problem now is he cannot deliver contradictions. He has to make decisions that are concrete thereby dissappointing those who believed he thought differently. But as far as the far left is concerned where can they go? Obama is as close as they will ever get to the Whitehouse for a long time.
It's naivete
May 17, 2009 - 14:55 ET by BKeyserThe real issue is naivete, and that's the argument covered up by the lefty pundits. I heard over and over again this week the left's politcial analysts say that what's of utmost importance is Obama's righteousness in doing what is right for the country, specifically in the National Security arena.
Who among us thought that they knew all there was to know about the threats and challenges facing the country? Outside of the National Security Director and the President, who can say that they've seen the compilation of all the intelligence and threat analysis? Any reasonable adult should understand that there is, even today with Mr. Transparency in office, information that remains classified and has not yet been released to the media for disemination to the enemy.
What scares me is not that there are prominent lefties incapable of comprehending this fact, but that the current President of the United States is one of them, and only after considerable reproach by the adults in the room, does he relinguish his temper tantrum and reluctantly accept that thwarting the next attack on the country is squarely in his court.
I would rather know that he pandered for votes- but I don't believe that's the case. I simply think he's a naive ideologue; a dangerous and rambunctious teenager with a penchant for cheap highs and keys to the family car.

May 17, 2009 - 20:34 ET by slickwillie2001In Af/Pak the Bamster is more or less continuing on the same path President George W. Bush was on, but that's not good enough because the situation has changed completely in Pakistan and is close to apocalyptic. The Taliban terrorists are an hour or two drive from where the nuclear weapons are stored. The Indians are on a hair trigger but don't know what to do. There are real questions as to whether the Pak Army would seriously take on other 'Pakistanis'. The Pak Army has been trained and equipped for a traditional Western war with India, no one knows how they might perform against the Taliban.
Instead of showing Netanyahu his style of Chicago diplomacy, the Bamster should be reading Pakistan the riot act, and blocking India so the Paks can move all of their army onto the Taliban front. Their best soldiers are on the Indian front.
Worrying about the 'palestinians' and Gaza at this moment is idiotic.

Iraq makes them hold their breath turn red and then blue with rage and anger. I don't know why that is. I think today's meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister, Netan...(aw heck I can't spell it) will be a defining moment. If Israel gets thrown under the bus then there isn't much hope foreign policy wise as the left, here and in Europe, hates the Israelis and wishes them ill. If Obama throws them under destabilisation of the region will be the result as the Israelis, feeling alone and abandoned will harden their line. Could be real messy.

Well, on that cheery note (LOL), night! :)
Do you concern yourself with the motivation...
May 17, 2009 - 22:24 ET by Tailgunner...when a loaded gun is being pointed at you?
Remember that Obama's had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into these positions.
And there's still the possibility that those pictures could be 'leaked'. Obama could classify them or lock them up by executive order but he hasn't.
This gives him plausible deniability. Obama's pretty good at publicly blocking the front door while quietly slipping it under the back door.
I still say that Obama is extremely dangerous. Whether it's immaturity, naivete', arrogance, recklessness, ideology or malevolence is only minimally relevant.
His actions and inactions have resulted in an extremely unstable economy where legal contracts carry less weight than political cronyism, formerly sovereign states are threatened with the loss of billions at the snap of a union thug's fingers, and a man who's never met a single payroll tears down multimillion-dollar corporations as a five-year-old child kicks over a set of building blocks.
He's arrogated the authority to enslave CEOs, executives, and later on even doctors through his disastrous single-payer health insurance scam.
Obama is a buffoon to our enemies and a treacherous, boorish dolt to our allies.
And the worst is yet to come. His cap-and-trade system, along with additional huge corporate taxes, will by his own admission cause energy rates 'to skyrocket'.
Poor families in the North and Northeast (including members of my own family) will literally freeze due to their inability to pay for heating oil...unless Obama in his benevolence tosses them enough alms to at least ward off frostbite.
Obama, as other unprincipled politicians before him, will force business to collect his taxes from the consumer instead of summoning up the political courage to break another campaign promise of 'tax cuts for 95% of Americans'.
And of course, there's that nagging question about Obama's 'civilian national security force' that in his own words 'would be just as powerful and well funded as the military'.
I submit that by shoveling billions of dollars into 'community groups' for example ACORN and it's hundreds of front groups, and tripling the size of 'AmeriCops', Obama may be creating the manpower base for such a force.
'Brownshirts'? Perhaps not immediately. 'Dictator'? Just ask AIG, GM, Chrysler, and Gov. Schwarzenegger about that.
But just as we have been treated, through Obama's actions, to an endless series of incredible events we thought 'would never happen here', we've learned that we can't afford to ignore Obama's words and his promises.
There is nothing he isn't capable of, and it's time to realize this. We have a very big problem on our hands.

The Constitution is also written as to allow laymen the ability to understand it. Where does Obama get his authority to manipulate corporations and finical institutions, where is the authority to ruin our privately owned heath care institutions?
Obama means to change these things he has no right to touch, so yes, he is with purpose.

Poll question
May 18, 2009 - 17:05 ET by QueenMumJer: It's sort of like Wanda Sykes mistating that Rush Limbaugh wants America to fail. It is not Obama's intent to destroy America. He thinks America needs to be "changed". He doesn't realize that the "change" he wants to accomplish will destroy the America that has given him everything he possesses. He honestly believes that he can bring about this "change" and America will remain the same free country it was founded to be. Or maybe I'm just being a bit too optimistic.

Anyway what I was trying to say is I dissagree with this statement.
It is not Obama's intent to destroy America. He thinks
America needs to be "changed". He doesn't realize that the "change" he
wants to accomplish will destroy the America that has given him
everything he possesses.
Obama knows his projects are not sustainable, he knows perfectly
well that he is scaring off investment, he knows he is killing the
privet sector, he knows the Gov. can know more afford Universal Health
care as it has Medicare, he knows SS is going bankrupt, and he knows
that Cap n Tax will make all of this worst. He wants our Country to
fail, so he can lead us back to mediocrity, in-fact it cant happen soon
enough for him. He will lead us to Socialism and a new world order.
This CiC goes out and sells the farm then tells us it's our fault, has anyone ever heard such hypocrocy?

May 17, 2009 - 22:21 ET by RESTLESS 1is finally realizing what we have know for some time; that politicians, be they from the right, or the left, only care about getting elected. Politicians from either side care not about immigration, guns, torture, or gay rights. They make a woeful habit of throwing their constituencies under the bus. Our wishes be damned.

He will punish the corporate Pharisees with higher taxes so that they may know that being successful and taking risks is evil. He will print Dollars that will fall like manna from Heaven, hither and thither flowing upwards because they are inflated. He will cast out the GOP demons from the Temple on the Hill. He will still the CO2 breath of Satan. He will give freely of the wealth of both Believer and Nonbeliever alike, so that the Chosen People can stay home all day and watch TV and smoke the Ganja that Yahweh hath provided.
In other words, Brothers and Sisters patience. He just has to figure out how to push forth all that you want without too many noticing until it's too late.

Obama's miraculously unhappy base
May 18, 2009 - 08:06 ET by trhugGary Huggins One point I'd like to make is that without Christian bases, no one would be discussing ANY results of Obama's cabal. Without God's rule in a society , freedom doesn't exist. When a people abandon Christian principles, destruction results. The U.S. of A. is not an exception to other fallen societies. The biggest, most powerful regimes have all gone caput with moral decline. Unfortunately the same seeds that appear to have destroyed previous societies are doing the same to us . I know of no exception to this rule of history.
I am sorry Trhug
May 18, 2009 - 08:24 ET by ahusserBut Christianity should not be in this discussion. Once again it is exclusionary and divisive and one can be conservative without being a Christian. Religion is a private matter not a matter of state, public policy or any party policy. Also Christianity does not have a monopoly on morality. Do not try to establish a religion to be conservative.

So- this dude and this chick--
May 18, 2009 - 12:06 ET by milootooleSo- this dude and this chick-- were like -walking in a garden. And the dude -he like, loved the chick. So, like over time, they had a couple of kids and he , like really loved them. He was happy with his digs and his style. There was lots of stuff growin in the garden to eat and all.
So everybody was OK with it. But after a while the chick got an itch and she got restless. One day she went for a walk by herself to work things out. She was getting into--like-- I don't want no more kids and like --hey, it's my body and the dude ain't gonna tell me what to do with it. She hears a soft whisper and she sees this other dude sittin in a tree. And he says to her--"Are you happy with the dude??Is all OK? Are you tired of the same old stuff every day?? I think you need some change in your life. I can show you a tree that grows, like the best tasting apples you ever ate." Now this was some slick dude, slim, handsome by some folks opinions. And sure enough, he gets the chick to want to taste that fruit and she thinks like--"He's a god", and she goes with him to the edge of the garden and there's this big old apple tree just outside the garden. It has a sign on it "Universal Health Tree" and a bigger one, "The Tree of Change".
Now this chick really has an itch., but she ain't got the courage to go it alone. So she goes back and she gets the dude who loves her to come with her. They step outside the agrden with the kids and wow, the trees grow behind them and they can't see how to get back in. But they're not too worried cause those apples look so good. So they go to the tree and there's a ladder--but there's a sign- "If you are over 40 years of age--no apples". So, she's not 40 and she says "The kids and I can get enough apples for you and for us. So they are about to climb the ladder when the slick dude says--"Hey, you gotta wait--these folks here who have never worked need those apples a head of you, so just get in line". Now they are in line and every time they get close, the slick one lets another whole group of folks jump in front of them. Finally, the chick says -"Let's go back". But they find they can't. The trees grew behind them and there's no path back. Then she finds the dude who loves her is sick and she asks the slick one to help out and he tells her that everybody gets equal shares and there ain't enough for everybody so her dude has to get better on his own--or that's it, he's a goner.
Meantime, while this little talk is going on, folks by the thousands have been climbing the ladder and now the only apples left are at the very top where the branches are too thin to hold the folks and they are falling out of the trees to their deaths. So the slick one turns to the chick and tells her that she and her sons will have to plant some more trees and forage for food for all these other folks who don't know how to do it. And by the way--"send your smallest son up to the top of the tree to get some apples for this other group of people who just showed up."
Now, I don't know how the story ends because , even though I and my chick stayed in the garden, the slick one found a way in and took all the fruit from the trees in the garden and have that out to theses other folks who did not know how to take care of trees and only knew how to eat the fruit.
Now , my chick and I are really hungry, we are not allowed to talk about it or we won't get any food at all. The slick one redistributed all the fruit in the garden to the outside folks. He sent some of them in to plant trees in here, but all they planted was ACORNs and you can't eat an oak tree.
I overheard the first chick, after a long hard day, saying "boy the apples looked better on the other side, nut I never got to eat one.".
We are allowed to sit and sing "Kumbaya, my lord" (and you know who that is while we sip a flavored drink. But boy--do I miss the old days.
Oh yeah, one day, my chick says , "I hate the way things turned out". She had to go sit in a compound with others convicted of "hate" crimes.
Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe this piece.
