On Monday, NewsBusters asked, Is Miss California the Left's new Sarah Palin?
Given what White House senior advisor David Axelrod said in jest about the Obamas considering naming their new dog "Miss California," and judging by the reaction from the audience at George Washington University, one has to think the answer is a resounding "Yes."
Appearing on NPR's "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me," Axelrod was asked about Bo by host Peter Sagal.
Axelrod's response, and the audience laughter, is rather telling (YouTube audio embedded below the fold with partial transcript):
<
PETER SAGAL, HOST: So, let's take the President's dog. Obviously, that was focus-grouped, you really wanted to appeal to the Portuguese-American community with the choice. Seriously, do you, is it part of your job to worry about that, how things will play politically. How they'll look, how they should be framed?
DAVID AXELROD, WHITE HOUSE SENIOR ADVISOR: I only, I only got called in for the final three on the dog.
SAGAL: Really?
AXELROD: I wasn't there at the beginning of the process.
SAGAL: Seriously, were you consulted?
AXELROD: I was not consulted.
SAGAL: Really?
AXELROD: I was not consulted.
SAGAL: Really?
AXELROD: Yeah.
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: But who were the other two? Were there really two others?
AXELROD: One was Miss California.
(Audience applause and laughter)
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: Dude, you just lost the carelessly topless demographic for 2012.
Amazing. Now White House advisors are joining the attacks on this woman while media and audience members seemingly applaud.
Honestly, what is happening to this nation?
*****Update: There is some confusion as to what Axelrod and Sagal were discussing. Were they talking about the choice of dogs or choice of names? The way Drudge and Real Clear Politics framed it, they were talking about names. The New York Times piece seemed unclear, although it suggested they were discussing the choice of dogs.
Frankly, I'm not sure. It seems to me that regardless of what Sagal was asking, Axelrod must have been talking about names, as even from a comedic standpoint, the Obamas certainly weren't considering making Miss California their pet. As a joke, it makes no sense. Of course, if that's the joke, regardless of how absurd, that's even more offensive, astoundingly so.
What do you think they were talking about? Is the punch line that they were considering naming the dog Miss California, or that they were considering making Prejean their pet?

May 16, 2009 - 19:10 ET by mostlymoderateI know. Makes you want to give up reading the news sometimes. Not to sound like a freaky conspiracy theorist or anything like that, but there seems to be some very unruly "powers-that-be" that are trying to destroy everything that was ever good about America. From 'Apple Pie' to morality, decency and everything else that is pure and wholesome. Unfortunately, most people just become tolerant of the negative changes and then things continue to spiral down even more.
Ok, I am done being negative. Gonna go running and forget about it.

Of all the things Prejean has been accused of being in the last two weeks, a dog is not one of them. I can't even think of any dog-like qualities Prejean could be said to possess. As you say, the joke just makes no sense at all.

That is the whole point.
Having anyone who gets positive national attention espousing traditional
conservative principles is a threat to their agenda. From Sarah Palin to Joe the Plumber to the people
who attended the Tea Parties, the left is sending the message that they will come
down hard and do whatever it takes to shut down any dissenting opinion. This is another chapter straight out of Rules for
Radicals. Since they can’t prevail in an
exchange of ideas they must resort to smears and ridicule as a way to
discourage anyone else who might be tempted to speak up.

May 16, 2009 - 23:30 ET by JerA little perspective please...
a. What the heck was Axlerod referring to? The name of the dog? The breed of the dog? The identity of the consultants?
b. If it were the breed or name, it was a tasteless quip and he should apologize. The idea that he meant to imply Miss California is a "dumb bitch" is utterly ridiculous.
c. The notion that this augurs the end of Western civilization at the hands of the Obama administration and that Axlerod shouold resign or be fired is also silly. Should John McCain have resigned from the Senate when he joked that Chelsea Clinton was ugly because Janet Reno was her father? Should Rush Limbaugh have resigned when he called Chelsea a "dog"? Of course not. They apologized, as should Axlerod.
d. Regarding Wanda Sykes' extraordinarily lame and insensitive wisecracks about Rush: I could be wrong, but I don't believe Obama reacted with laughter to those particular jokes.

May 17, 2009 - 04:18 ET by FranksamThe other choice, which was not mentioned, may have been Michelle, or is that too hateful?
Re Hateful
May 17, 2009 - 09:36 ET by slickwillie2001Inconvenient; when someone calls 'Michelle', they'd both come.
BTW, this thread reminded me of this excellent caption contest: http://wizbangblog.com
Can I buy two black and white dogs?
May 17, 2009 - 05:49 ET by Dragonsbreathand name them after Obama's kids or Axlerods ( dunno if he ever learned how to have any tho)?
Would that be funny?

May 17, 2009 - 06:36 ET by CrashCall a young woman a "dog" and that's acceptable for the pandering flakes on the left who pimp for a demographic who refer to their women as "bitches & ho's."
But, using a renegade monkey in a cartoon to illustrate an out of control congress will draw Satan's wrath. And whatever you do, please don't call our "bitches nappy ho's" ... unless you're A-frickin-American.

David Axelrod is a supremely arrogant comb-over who looks like he flosses with tur*s. He is as corrupt as anyone in DC, rich as heck, and could care less what he says.
Why is the title misnamed?
May 17, 2009 - 08:22 ET by LegionOfDorknessHere and other places suggest that Axelrod joked about 'naming' the dog 'Miss California', when reading the transcript and listening to the audio plainly shows that Axelrod joked about Carrie Prejean actually BEING one of the dogs under consideration.
That makes the joke more classless AND stupider at the same time.
Horse puckey
May 17, 2009 - 09:00 ET by nkviking75Whenever you hear of a parade which includes horses, imagine all the Axelrod that has to be scooped up off the streets.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
This kind of stupidity is
May 17, 2009 - 09:14 ET by pitter43This kind of stupidity is what we can expect from the " leaders " of our country? No wonder we're circling the drain.
Clearly Mr. Axelrod misunderstood.
May 17, 2009 - 09:34 ET by dervishWhat was really going on was that the White House was considering having Obama named Miss California, until the Donald rained on their parade.
Excuses
May 17, 2009 - 09:40 ET by slickwillie2001The extent that some of our taking-points posters will go to make excuses for the Bamster and his administration can be stunning.
There's a pattern of Misogyny
May 17, 2009 - 11:16 ET by OxyConThat is the EXACT same audience reaction that Obama got when he mentioned Hillary by name, paused, then slipped her the ghetto middle finger and it’s also the same EXACT audience response he got when he said “You can put lipstick on a pig…it’s still a pig” in reference to Sarah Palin.
But Obama never meant any of that stuff, just like Axlefraud didn’t just call Carrie Prejean a dog.

→ Tough call
May 17, 2009 - 12:07 ET by Cool ArrowI'd prefer "gutter middle finger", but that would imply the he's more at home in one than the other.

Middle Finger
May 17, 2009 - 12:23 ET by slickwillie2001He did it to McCain in one of the debates as well, didn't he?
He's doing it in this picture as well, and it's not hard to see why: http://www.mofopolitics.com
Sure slick. Michelle is ugly Obama hates her and you're a genius
May 17, 2009 - 15:02 ET by JerSure, slick...
Michelle looks dreadful in that picture, because, well, she's a particularly dreadful looking person [but, of course, I'm sure no one here at NB would be so crass as to joke about her physical appearance...what would it say about our country?]. And Obama is obviously giving the finger in the linked photo because he hates being married to that ugly woman, and, well, because we all know he's just a plain hater. Which accounts for the fact that, as a candidate for President, he decided he would periodically give "The Finger" to his political opponents or call them "Pigs" since it is such an impressive and appealing campaign tactic--as well as a useful means of expressing his all-consuming hatred. Of course.
It just all makes so much sense.

I'm shocked, simply shocked,
May 17, 2009 - 23:20 ET by NL207I'm shocked, simply shocked, that you'd speak of the Klingon woman living in the White House that way!
"Ghetto middle finger"? What
May 17, 2009 - 15:43 ET by OxyCon"ghetto middle finger" is when someone flips the bird in a passive aggressive manner (Obama's style), in an attempt to conceal what they really are doing, so they don't suffer the repercussions of their actions.
Google it.
Ah... Sorry, but I think
May 17, 2009 - 15:47 ET by balboaAh...
Sorry, but I think this is completely insane.
I still don't get it. So
May 17, 2009 - 16:41 ET by JerI still don't get it. So he's flipping a bird to conceal what he is really doing--which is flipping a bird, and no one will suspect this!?...except of course his audience and the omniscient "cannot be fooled" Limbaugh Nation. On the other hand (npi), Hillary and McCain won't realize it, nor will any of the rest of us [who think the whole finger deal is about the biggest load of bs ever peddled by the Obamahaters].

Axelgoof!
May 17, 2009 - 21:48 ET by blazermaniacDavid Axelgoof needs to make a public apology immediately. It's amazing that Barack Obama & Carrie Prejean have basically the same view on marriage. One gets crucified, and the other gets a free pass. Typical "Drive By Media" Bias. It's unbelievable how pathetic the media is these days. Like Sean Hannity said, "Journalism Died in 2008".
Gone since early today.....
May 17, 2009 - 21:57 ET by maggieqpublicGone since early today..... has Axelroad apologized to Ms. Prejean?

Naming the dog
May 17, 2009 - 22:33 ET by djm159Perhaps Axelrod should name the dog after himself, "axelrod" is a cute name and the namer actually looks like the dog or Hitler, I can't decide. I guess he couldn't call the dog Michael because that sounds too much like Michelle, the name of the family gorilla. That could be confusing at playtime. With everything happening in the United States since the annointed one took office it seems to me to naming a pooch would be sort of on the back burner.
