For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Specter hints Kemp died of GOP agenda?
Sen. Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Democrat, said part of the reason that he left the Republican Party last week was disillusionment with its health-care priorities, and suggested that had the Republicans taken a more moderate track, Jack Kemp may have won his battle with cancer..."If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine."
Has this guy lost his mind, or is he being taken too literally?

They are simply shameless. And Arlen Specter is fitting right in with them.

Specter, Smerconish
May 4, 2009 - 09:58 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsSpecter had many health problems in the recent past, one of which was brain tumor/cancer (can't remember details). I truly believe his thinking has been damaged or he has gone senile. I don't see how this hatred of all thing R has come about. What I do see is the difference between the two parties members. Here are some samples:
Obama trashes Bush, every speech, every town meeting.
Bush went 8 years without a bad thing to say about Clinton, and actually praised him a number of times.
Clinton staffers trashed the (People's) White House in the last weeks there, while the Clintons stole public property.
Bush and his wife graciously welcomed Obama's to their new home. I could go on.
Here is a link to the metrosexual Smerconish column today about Specter, another wishy washy liberal in the making. Smerconish put out a list of 10 or so reasons why he would vote for Obama, Obama has since broken all of his campaign vows and reasons Smerconish voted for him, Smerconish says, ahhh, so what.

Government throwing money at a disease doesn't suddenly make it go away. Sen. Specter on Kemp's Death
May 4, 2009 - 09:28 ET by QueenMumAlthough I haven't searched all the articles re: Kemp's cancer, none of the ones I have read mention what type of cancer Kemp had. I think this is relevant because there are types of cancer that are easily cured if detected early enough. To consider that Kemp would have survived had more money been put into research, it would be necessary to know what type of cancer he had, at what stage it was diagnosed, and whether an earlier diagnosis would have saved him. And in the article, Specter himself states that current research saved/prolonged his own life. It's sad that Specter decided to use a colleauge's death to justify his defection from the Republican party and advance the liberal agenda regarding health care.
Edited to add: Article re: cancer death rates and causes

May 4, 2009 - 14:51 ET by QueenMumT. Monger: But Specter is trying to make the point that Kemp died because the government hasn't spent enough money on research. Perhaps Kemp died of a cancer that's easily cured in its early stages because of effective research and treatment and he didn't get an early enough diagnosis. Or perhaps he died of a cancer for which there is currently no cure or long-term extension of life. Specter is generalizing for the sake of scoring political points while overlooking the big picture. There's no such thing as a "cure for cancer". There are too many types and variations, not to mention the role of natural immunity and heredity. (sarc/on) Of course, once we have Obamalized health care, that will change. The sick will be healed, the lame will walk, and the dead will rise. And it won't cost anything. (sarc/off)

Thank You Arlen
May 4, 2009 - 10:18 ET by allanfThe obvious question is why didn't you bolt the party long ago, say when Republicans were in the majority if you felt that way?
Arlen has handed his Republican opponent a big gift with that quote. It may cost him the election in 2010.

Re Bondholders Getting Shafted
May 4, 2009 - 10:49 ET by slickwillie2001Fox News was discussing this, Bloomberg.com on bondholders vs UAW. It's good to see analysts are being clear about what is going on here: GM Bankruptcy Probable as Obama Favors UAW Against Bondholders: http://www.bloomberg.com
Kudlow has been tearing the Bamster a couple of new ones on this as well over the last week. I wonder what 'constitutional scholar' Perfesser Obama was doing during his Contract Law classes.
Right now the Doofus is giving one of his 'tennis match' speeches on overseas banking changes to 'close taxation loopholes', with Turbo Tax Timmie right there by his side.
Obama Overexposed?
May 4, 2009 - 10:53 ET by BlondeGood grief, doesn't he ever shut up?
I wonder, we're at 105 days now, correct? Fifteen weeks, so if we subtract 2 days for each weekend, Bamster's been in office for 75 working days.
How many days has he had a "statement" for the press, or news conference? 74? 73?
Sheesh, the latest one was a total insult....Tax Cheat Timmy introducing their brilliant tax plan....then Obama blathers on.
I hope he fails, too.

May 4, 2009 - 11:43 ET by JIMMY1660for term limits. if Arlen was elected with Republican money-and now he has changed teams-the monies he has in the piggy bank for reelection should be returned to the donations.and he should pay back all monies he has used to this point. you can not have it both ways.
Republicans are in trouble , not because they are too right, because they are not right enough. Lead by conservative ideas, the fellow in the White House is not American. he is a Socialist/Marxist/Communist. American voters do not want to be under Government rule 24/7.

May 4, 2009 - 12:19 ET by RiiightTerribly cruel and uncouth to Jack Kemp's survivors.
Jack Kemp is a thoughtful and committed Christian, and he would have refused treatment that cost the lives of others to provide.
We are well rid of that Specter of the heartless Left.
Gun toters aren't dangerous
May 4, 2009 - 12:25 ET by ThisnThatAmazing. From the Massachussetts supreme court today: “While we are cognizant that unlicensed possessors of firearms may use firearms unlawfully, unlicensed possession of a firearm itself is a regulatory crime,’’ Spina wrote. “It is passive and victimless.’’
Spina added, “that a person possesses a firearm without a valid license does not itself pose a substantial risk that physical force against another may result. Rather, it is the unlawful use of a firearm that involves a substantial risk that physical force against another may result.’’
I never thought I'd see the day. But the next step is to remove the regulation. New Hampshire, for instance, does not require gun licenses. But, here's the discenting vote from the uber-liver viewpoint -- and I'll make a note, by a female justice, which seems to be more and more prevalent these days:
“When a handgun or automatic weapon is involved, the purpose of the firearm is to injure or kill; there is no other reason for that weapon's existence," Cowin wrote. "We have recognized in various contexts that firearms are, by nature and design, dangerous instrumentalities."
The majority opinion, Cowin wrote, “reduced to its minimum, that is simply a reiteration of the tired slogan that 'guns don't kill people, people do.' We know this to be a dangerous oversimplification. The fact is that people kill people with guns, and in a substantial number of cases those guns are unlicensed.’’

Warmists Revising Propaganda
May 4, 2009 - 13:54 ET by slickwillie2001Limbaugh was discussing this leaked information from the global waming believers today: Greens Planning to Lie More Effectively About Global Warming: http://spectator.org
This appears to be a sign of panic, and this is good. Anytime someone realizes they have to overhaul their message, the message is not getting through. As well, the new look at 'global warming' in Australia has to be causing some in the movement to wonder if their investments are as safe as they had hoped.

May 4, 2009 - 15:12 ET by katainkentthe stuff that is rolling out of people's mouths these days and people don't even stop to examine it for a second.
