Leftwing Bloggers Blame Glenn Beck for Pittsburgh Cop Killings

Three Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police officers were killed on Saturday, and according to prominent left-wing bloggers including the Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan and Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos, it's because of conservative talk show hosts on radio and television.

Most frequently named as the culprit in such vitriolic postings was Fox News's Glenn Beck.

Such a disgusting conclusion stems from comments made to the press by friends of assailant Richard Poplawski as to why he might have carried out such a heinous act.

As the Associated Press reported Saturday:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an assault rifle held police at bay for hours as their fallen officers were left bleeding nearby, their colleagues unable to reach them.

When it was over four hours later, three officers were dead and more than 100 rounds had been fired by SWAT teams and the gunman on the quiet Pittsburgh street, police said. [...]

Richard Poplawski, 23, was charged with three counts of homicide, aggravated assault and a weapons violation. He had gunshot wounds in his legs but was otherwise unharmed because he was wearing a bulletproof vest, Harper said. [...]

Poplawski had feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon," said Edward Perkovic, his best friend. [...]

Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said Poplawski feared that President Barack Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."

The Left sprang into action. Daily Kos's Markos Moulitsas published the following:

This appears to be an inevitable result of the bad economy, a conservative movement circling the drain, feeling betrayed, isolated, and defeated, and the rampant eliminationist talk from right-wing nutjobs on the radio and TV.

I know Barb blogged this below, but it's important to see the aftermath of right-wing hysteria, because this is likely just the beginning. Unless the Becks (and Beck-wannabees) walk back from that ledge, they'll be to blame for more atrocities of this sort.

Obama isn't coming for anyone's guns. The NRA won that battle years ago and the Democrats have long since moved on. Yet the eliminationists carry on, whipping their readers and listeners into a frenzy of panic and fear, and as a result, four little girls (and a young woman) don't have dads tonight. And I fear today was just the beginning.

Ummm, Markos: after being recently laid off from his job, the guy got into a fight with his mother over a dog urinating in the house, and you blame this on right-wing talkers? Are you joking?

Sadly not, for the Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan reached the same conclusion:

Many of us have worried that the heated, apocalyptic rhetoric of the anti-Obama forces might spill over at some point into violence in the hands of individuals prone to lashing out. We now have what seems to be a clear instance of that and three dead police officers. One wonders whether Fox News or the Second Amendment fanatics will chill it out a little. And then one realizes who we're talking about.

How disgusting, Andrew. You should be ashamed of yourself.

But Moulitsas and Sullivan weren't alone, for David Neiwert made the same hateful, unfounded observation:

He feared an Obama gun grab? Gee, I wonder where he could have heard that.

And Taylor Marsh:

[O]ne element in today’s world that also plays a part, particularly since the shooter mentioned an Obama gun ban that is a fear threat of the right used by people like the N.R.A., is that people like Poplawski are the perfect target for the right-wing fearmongering hate speech circling the airwaves since conservatives lost their hold on everything.

John Cole called it "Glenn Beck's America."

Steve Benen wasn't shy about this either:

As David Neiwert, who documents these kinds of right-wing activities, recently reported, there was a lengthy segment on Fox News two weeks ago in which Glenn Beck and the NRA's Wayne LaPierre insisted that Americans' 2nd Amendment rights are "under attack" from the Obama administration. What's more, as Neiwert noted this morning, the conservative Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ran a story just three days ago about "speculation that President Obama might pull the trigger on tighter regulations for gun ownership." The article quoted a gun-store salesman raising the specter of a "confiscation of firearms" from the government.

Everyone would benefit if the right could just lower the temperature a bit.

And Jay Stevens:

Of course, it's not ju st [sic] extremist rhetoric on firearms -- it's all over the place lately, even extending to calls to arms over sparkly dishes and embodied by the weird rantings that Glenn Beck has engaged in since getting his Fox News gig.

And digby:

If Neiwert is correct, this is probably only the beginning of some unpleasantness. The radio gasbags are getting more and more incoherent and wild and the population most subject to their violent rants are armed to the teeth. I think we can all see where this might be headed.

FireDogLake chimed in as well, as did ThinkProgress.

Of course, one could make the case that these folks got their marching orders concerning this issue from two of their heroes as Bill Maher and Keith Olbermann pointed fingers at Beck's supposedly inflammatory rhetoric on the March 20 installment of HBO's "Real Time."

But when an unstable, highly-armed, recently laid off guy who was kicked out of the marines for throwing a food tray at his drill sergeant gets into a fight with his mother and shoots three police officers, it is absolutely irresponsible for people to blame it on anyone BUT the man pulling the trigger.

Alas, it's probably just as irresponsible for me to think any of those cited in this piece would be responsible about anything.

Post facto commentary: Let's be clear what these attacks on folks like Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity are all about -- the left-wing in our nation want to silence ALL opposing voices in the media, and they will do it using all tools at their disposal INCLUDING blaming journalists and political commentators for the criminal behavior of others.

As much as the Obama administration and the Democrat-controlled Congress are leading America down the path of irreversible socialism, their minions in the media -- particularly those in the liberal blogosphere -- are doing everything in their power to eliminate opinion not in lock-step with the revolution.

Those who disagree with the direction our nation is heading better be willing to stand up and fight or there will soon come a day when you don't recognize the land you live in.

Be afraid, America. Be very afraid.

until then shut up. Unless Beck said "Go out there and kill innocent people." you're whining does not move me. this sounds like someone who was just looking for an excuse to kill. If this guy did not have a gun he would have used a bomb or a knife.

Using Liberal Logic -- It's Obama's Fault

Let me use a little "liberal logic" here and say it is Obama's fault. If he had not provoked the guy with fear of a gun ban, this whole mess might not have happened.

Nice one

Since the left blame everything on Bush includeing their sinks clogging up.The same standards should apply to Obama. If it goes wrong it is his fault.

  Poplawski had feared

Poplawski had feared "the obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon," said Edward Perkovic, his best friend. [...]

OK, so the guy made the statement.  A lot of people have made that statement.  Gun and ammo sales have soared since the election of obama.  But the key here is that there is no conection between that statement and the guys premeditated attack on the policemen.  I'm sure that someone as unstable as this guy made lots of statements to everyone around him.

He shouldn't have had firearms in the first place.

In the original article it mentioned that this nutjob had been thrown out of the military (assaulting his superior or some such thing). Brady II passed in 1998 when this jackass was 13 or so and among other things requires that when you purchase a weapon you fill out a 3 page form and your dealer calls you in to the authorities to verify that you can legally own a weapon. The 3rd or so question on the form is "have you been dishonorably discharged.."- and a "yes" precludes you from purchase. Legal age to purchase a rifle or shotgun in most areas is 18, handgun 21- he can't have been grandfathered in with his weapons. So he illegally owned and used firearms. This is more proof that anti-firearms legislation isn't workable- criminals don't obey the law, they are after all criminals.

There are several types of military discharges....

... listed in the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

There's 'Honorable', of course.

'Administrative' discharges include: General, under honorable conditions', 'other than honorable' (OTH). They are given for unsuitability or patterns of minor misconduct. They do not reflect on a criminal record.

Most likely this guy was hauled before his Commanding Officer and received 'non-judicial punishment' (NJP) prior to discharge.

The military washes out high numbers of recruits and junior enlisted in their first two years. They don't spend a lot of time and effort on pursuing charges; most of them are simply kicked out.

He probably received no more than a General (OTH) discharge for 'unsuitability'. This would not prevent him from legally buying a gun.

Only the Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD, known as the 'Big Chicken Dinner') and the Dishonorable Discharge (DD) are punitive discharges awarded upon convictions by courts martial or civilian courts.

A suspect may plea-bargain for a BCD in return for charges being dropped. Both are treated as felony convictions on civilian rap sheets. Both would also be discoverable during any firearm record check.

In the unlikely case that this lowlife had UCMJ charges filed against him instead of 'NJP', and he received a BCD or DD, then he would have had an immediate problem. His record would be 'flagged' during the check and he would be subject to immediate arrest.

Eliminationists?

Markolitsos's label  'eliminationists' sounds like a movement of bran-consumption fans.

Can anyone say- Rahm Emanual?

I think you're missing the larger point Noel- all these low-lifes get their talking points straight from whom? Anyone that thinks this is spontaneous criticism toward popular conservatives hasn't been paying attention... or has forgotten the newest Cabinet Post- Silent-the-Right Czar.

oh the irony

irresponsible reporters reporting on the irresponsibility of reporting.

Using the same logic, then Obama is to blame for 13 deaths..

Using the same logic, then why not blame President Obama for the 13 deaths.. in the Binghamton massacre.

As widely reported in recent days (this from the NY Post):

The lunatic behind the Binghamton massacre was a pathetic, gun-loving coward who got divorced, lost his job and was driven to depression because he could barely speak English after many years in the United States, officials and people who knew him said yesterday. ..would get agitated when staffers had trouble with his broken English..."He would get frustrated,"

When running for president candidate Obama promised, on the issue of immigration, to "make sure that they're learning English.." and we can once again be a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. That's what I intend to do as president of the United States."

Sensing that President Obama has no real intention to actually solve this problem for him and other immigrants, Jiverly Wong just couldn't take it any more.

Oh Really?

Obama isn't coming for anyone's guns. The NRA won that battle years ago and the Democrats have long since moved on.

SecState HRC....a mere ten days ago.

Last I checked, Hillary was still a democrat.

Proof of the pudding that they still are "after the guns" is their absolutely predictable knee-jerk reaction to these horrible tragic events.  The Left refuse to understand that some people are just unbalanced, cannot cope, and go crazy.

I hope he fails, too.

The totalitarian left doesn't give a damn about cops being shot

...or about criminals with guns. After all, these people hate the police and routinely make heroes out of cop killers and criminals. If this guy had been a left-wing kook or black like that guy out in Oakland was, the lefties would be treating this matter entirely differently.

The totalitarians are using unfortunate incidents such as this to advance their anti-freedom, lefty agenda, which does not include private ownership of firearms.

They fully intend to take away our freedom, and want to make damn sure we will be unable to stop them.

The only person responsible for this tragedy is Richard Poplawski, as he was the one who pointed the gun at the officers and pulled the trigger, not Glenn Beck.

This coup has gone on long enough. The time to put it down is NOW.

R D Helm, You did see the

R D Helm,

You did see the the protests in Oakland SUPPORTING the scumbag who killed 4 cops out there a couple of weeks ago? Looked like plenty of "Black Liberation Theology" church attendees in the mix.

Then O'Reilly has former Oakland Mayor Willie Brown & some "community activist" from the east bay on. The Mayor did the right thing, the activist, not so much. What hit me was this clown kept saying ...the African 'this' & African 'that'. Never did he identify with America. He hated not only the cops, who he described as occupying forces in "African communities", but he hates the USA as well.  Sounded plenty like Rev.J.Wright's church that Obama attended for 20 years, but NEVER heard the hate. BS. That's what we got to look forward to in the next few years, more crap along these lines coming our way in various forms.

Armageddon on the horizon

Glenn Beck has been frothing at the mouth lately and getting a lot of press along with, not surprisingly, a large, loyal viewer ship.   Some in the press have called it “Glenn Beck unplugged,” but I think, from what I have seen, “unhinged” is the more accurate descriptor.  Steven Colbert did a wonderful spoof on Beck’s War Room called “Doom Bunker” which simply must be seen as part of this discussion.  Below is a link to part 1.  I couldn't get part 2 to play, but it is worth watching if you can find it.

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/220649/march-04-2009/doom-bunker---glenn-beck-s--war-room-

Now, I don’t think that Glenn Beck is responsible for the police shootings, but there certainly has been a spate of hate killings (like the one at the UU Church in Tennessee) where, when they search the perps apartments, they find book cases full of right-wing “hate liberals” books and hard drives full of extreme right-wing spew and propaganda.  At the very least, Glenn Beck has found a very profitable way to tap into an apparent right-wing psychosis that Armageddon is just one more liberal away.

Dr Dutchman is finished

Dr Dutchman is finished with his diagnosis now.  WTF are you talking about?  Your's is a tired argument.

By the same token Dr. Dutchman, the left is responsible for upwards of 100 million deaths worldwide, caused by guns, bombs and gas chambers.  They were egged on by some of the most dispicable speakers the world has known.  People listened to them and went out and killed by the bushel. I'd say the majority of these deaths fall in the "hate catagory" don't you?  Hell, China is still killing for ideological reasons.

If you keeping tabs (and apparently you are) I would have to say the left-wing pretty mush has a corner on the market of murdering for propaganda reasons.  For all you know Dr. Dutchman, Armageddon is one liberal away.  If it would be any one, history proves, it would be a lefty.

Well done, well done.

Bravo Rex, I guess you proved my point better than I could ever have.

Empty vessel devoid of intelligent life? Not even close, but...

The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. It is said that if hailed by another ship, its crew will try to send messages to land or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom. ~ Wikipedia

The Flying Dutchman was also an opera, and a vessel in the Disney movie series “Pirates of the Carribbean” which simultaniously brought titilation, joy and fear to young and old audiences alike. ~ Me

If anything, Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy will

as their self-revised history proves it’s always been: the Democrat
Party.

Tie yourself to this anchor , ya democrat..

it was the Republican Party that elected the first Black
congressmen and senators, and collectively wrote a plethora of civil

The only people who have floated the idea of a possible
President Obama assassination have been liberal Democrats. Note: John

It was the Democrat Party that gave Blacks the poll taxes and literacy tests to keep them from voting… Republican. It
was the Democrat Party that created the Ku Klux Klan as an enforcement

The Klan was a domestic terrorist group which targeted African-Americans and other minorities, using lynchings, murder, beatings and cross-burnings to disenfranchise them.

Apparently the Democrats had no problem following a professional racist for a decade, a man who filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act for fourteen hours and opposed the confirmations of black Supreme Court Justices Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas.

Helm,

Oh, please.  Noel’s original point of departure was correct.  The shooter is a nutcase.  I doubt the shooter has any time for political convictions, one way or another.  My counter-point was that Glenn Beck found a rich vein to tap; extreme right-wing idealogues with a very narrow view of the world around them.  I think I am indistputably correct in this opinion.  Did Glenn Beck pull the trigger or even put wanton murder in the guy’s mind?  Of course not.  Is Glenn Beck making a boat load of money feeding and tapping into right-wing paranoa and neurosis?  You betcha!  (Thanks, Sarah!)  Other conservative pundits do the same thing.  Challenge my main point if you want to, but otherwise let’s leave it at that.

Just an aside.  Why do people on this site go out of their way to insult liberal posters?  Flying Dorkman.  Is that your idea of funny?  I enjoy a good joust, but certainly you can do better.

Right or Left...

I suppose that with any killing spree, regardless whether the killer is right or left leaning, you might find that in some cases the perp was driven to kill by the rantings of the opposite side. This isn't just a "right-wing" thing. You cite one reference but if one were to dig deeper, I'm sure you will find "left-wing" killers that had bookcases and hard drives full of "hate conservatives" spew and propoganda.

As a conservative that saw through Obeyme's rhetoric early in the primary, I see that everything I thought he was is what he is. Not a centerist as he appeared to be only to gain favor of moderates and republicans to win the election, but as left as they come in every respect. Say anything, promise everything to get elected. But, once in office, Obeyme's true colors are being revealed and many feel betrayed, even some that supported/voted for him.

I think some of Glenn Beck's popularity comes from that betrayal. People are looking for something, anything, anyone that can say what they are feeling. GB can be a little over the top sometimes but so can Obey, Matthews, Maddow, Schultz, etc. Name just about any talking head and you will find that they are over the top at least part of the time. It's not neccessary to get a point across, it's part of the showmanship that helps drive ratings, the ultimate goal of all those that participate. The way to stay on the air and continue to be heard.

Over the top commentary isn't limited to newscasters, it's even more prevelant for comedians: that's part of what makes them funny. I happen to like Colbert and Stewart, they are both funny partly because they accentuate stuff to put it over the top. But, I don't lend much credance to either of them or any comedian. They do what they do to be funny, to get ratings, to stay on the air. It's all the same game. I happened to enjoy the Colbert goof on Beck. I thought it was pretty funny. But, that doesn't mean that Beck is some kind of whacko.

Personally, if Beck wants to keep me on edge a little with his rantings, I'll take that. Acceptance and complacency are what drive those that would change our country into something that few of us would accept. I appreciate Beck's sometimes Armageddon commentary. It keeps me awake and aware to what could be just one more Liberal away.

Foxnews actually has an audience

That Fox actually has an audience is a major part of the left's problem. Unlike when Bush was in power, the left wing cable news networks (MSNBC, CNN et al) did not have an audience that could solicit a rallying cry for the left. They however had virtually all other media outlets except for Fox and a few  newspapers. That Beck could garner the kind of ratings from people who truly believe that Obama is changing the country is a major problem for the left. If only Olberman could?  However the left should simply be patient. Right wing dissent may disappear suddenly...with the rapture of Christ's church.

Once again, lefties blame

Once again, lefties blame Free Speech, when it's practiced by those who disagree with their totalitarian ideology.

Glenn Beck must be breaking out the [faux] champaign bottles...

...he's now the video Limbaugh!

Did I miss the part

...where the radical Left grieved over and assigned blame for the murder of the 4 Oakland cops?

I guess the reason why the radical Left was so silent about the 4 murdered Oakland cops was because they could not exploit that tragedy.

The only time the radical Left shows a hint of remorse over dead cops is when they can use their deaths as a political weapon.

Compare and contrast the radical Left's behavior over the dead Oakland cops and the dead Pittsburgh cops, and take note of the reason behind the dramatic differences.

As others have picked up,

As others have picked up, after the evil gunman, I feel compelled to blame President Obama for these horrible deaths.

After all,  if ONLY, if only, he would make a direct, sincere statement to the American people repudiating his previous support of unconstitutional "laws" to infringe the constitutional rights of the American people, then he would avert these massacres.

Why is he delaying this necessary action? How many people have to die before Obama reassures people that he does not intend to follow Clinton's call last week?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's call for assault weapon ban in U.S.

BY Richard Sisk
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Thursday, March 26th 2009, 8:07 PM WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Clinton called for a new assault weapon ban in the U.S. on Thursday ... Obama supported the ban during the campaign...

And of course, anyone who knows anything about guns, knows this: the term "assault weapons" is utterly bogus.

A boogieman term invented by implacable opponents of the US constitution in their attempt to deny the legal rights of gunowners.  That's why authoritarian stateists like Daily Kos's Markos Moulitsas have to lie on reflex.

Seems reasonable to me. What's in it for US troops to take terrorists prisoner?

1. They put themselves in further danger of injury and death.

2. The ACLU and friends of Eric Holder send lawyers to release them.

3. Prisoner get better treatment than the troops.

4. They're not allowed to interrogate them.

5. The face litigation once the terrorists start to sue their captors in US courts.

I agree Noel.  Now will you remove the despicable Savage audio?  Please?

You correctly point out that "it is absolutely irresponsible for people to blame it (the murders of the Pittsburg cops) on anyone BUT the man pulling the trigger."

However, just a few days ago, after the tragic police killings in Oakland commited by that piece of human debris, Lovell Mixon, you posted the inflammatory, unhinged rantings of Michael Savage who squarely placed the blame for their deaths on "sick liberalism" and "idiot liberals" like Senators Boxer and Feinstein, adding that "those men are dead because of the people on that stage".

You refer to the "disgusting conclusion" that Glen Beck was made a culprit by leftwing bloggers.  I am sure you must share that opinion of Savage's incendiary alllegations, and will disavow his comments.

Thanks.

Jer

Noel doesn't need to remove

Noel doesn't need to remove the Savage audio.  The act of listening to it is entirely voluntary.  YOU don't have top click on it if YOU don't want to hear it.  I don't listen to Savage.  This is entirely by my choice.  You don't either.

Now, about these two situations.  You can't see any differnce between the Oakland and Pittsburgh police murders through the lens of liberal enlightenment?  I certainly can.  There is a vast difference between these events.

Liberals and their policies can shoulder the lion's share of the burden for the events in Oakland.  Mixon was a paroled felon with a particularly violent past.  Given the nature of this man and his past, a very strong argument can be made that he should never have been paroled, and perhaps never have been elligible for parole or release before old age.    I can argue that California Penal authorities exercised extraordinarily poor judgement in their handling of this man.  Moreover, his parole supervision was not sufficient to prevent him from aquiring firearms by criminal means.  Mixon represents a complete failure of penal policy in California, which has been established by liberals.

In contrast, the shooter in Pittsburgh was an individual with no prior history of criminal behavior, mental disease or defect. Authorities exercising appropriate due caution could not be expected to predict his violent outburst and lacked any legal basis for denying this man his 2nd Amendment rights.  Fortunately, he spent his wrath on the police, who are paid and trained to assume these risks, instead of the general populace.

Sorry, NL...

But I was winding up a lengthy post, trying to link an article, and an Aplication Error knocked me completely off the site.

I'll try again tomorrow, but I may have to shut down for a few days and try to get this fixed.  It's been happening all too frequently lately.

Jer

Jer,

As you probably imagine, it's been a very, very, very long day for me. I just did my first live television broadcast, as well as two radio interviews, and am trying to bask in the glow if you know what I mean. That said, you raise a good point that I'd like some time to reflect on before responding thoroughly.

My initial response, though, is that Savage was speaking from the heart about a tragedy that rocked OUR area. You can't imagine how this incident in Oakland shook us, Jer. And, regardless of his celebrity, Savage IS a part of this community. So, his observations were from someone in the middle of the fire.

By contrast, a blogger from Seattle, or from Berkeley, California, or any of these others who pointed fingers of blame at Beck for this incident in Pittsburgh weren't in the middle of the community touched by the massacre, were they?

As it pertains to the four officers killed in Oakland, Savage WAS in the middle of it...and so was I.

On the day following the funeral of these four officers, I posted a lot of videos concerning the matter to share with people here. I ended with Savage's comment because it expressed a lot of what people in this community were feeling.

I thought I did a good job of sharing with my readers what my part of the country was going through during this tough time, and thought Savage's words would help outsiders understand some of the anger and the pain.

If you didn't like it, you didn't have to read it. I can't always make all of my audience happy. And, sometimes, I'm writing for myself, and don't care what others think.

Like Savage, I had to get some things off my chest that day, and didn't give a rat's bum whether or not everybody understood.

Fair enough? ns

Noel... I applaud the job

Noel...

I applaud the job you did in putting together the info and accompanying video/audio on the Oakland tragedy. Spendid work.

Regarding the Savage rant against liberals, I understood it very well. That doesn't mean I think it was appropriate or consistent with your statements about the proper assignment of blame.

Jer

I blame the Marxist media

I blame the Marxist media for championing the disarmament of citizens; if someone else was armed, they would have capped the guy before he killed more than 2.
