Former RNC Chair on Media: Refs Now Wearing Democrat Jerseys

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

Though there have long been concerns about liberal bias in the media, 2008 was the year the referees took off their striped shirts and donned a team’s jersey.

So wrote former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie in his National Review piece castigating what has become of journalism in our country.

To be sure, the former counselor to George W. Bush, having watched his boss for years get torn to shreds by a media Gillespie claimed "loathed the president," has a lot of opinions concerning liberal bias.

In this article, they marvelously came out:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Over the past few months, a steady stream of journalists from mainstream-media outlets - at least eight, led by Time Washington-bureau chief Jay Carney - have abandoned journalism for positions in the Obama administration or with congressional Democrats. Fortunately for them, the difficult transition from objective reporting to ardent advocacy of a party's agenda was made easier by the head start they got in last year's campaign. Though there have long been concerns about liberal bias in the media, 2008 was the year the referees took off their striped shirts and donned a team's jersey.

Some say it's a shift forced by the rapidly changing business model of journalism; others say longstanding liberal bias has simply become more apparent in a media culture that demands quick and constant content. But there are very few who deny that a marked change occurred. In a December dispute with the New York Times over an incredibly biased story on the root causes of the housing crisis (Guess what? It was all Bush's fault!), I put it this way: "I don't know if the New York Times's shoddy reporting is a result of its junk-bond status, or if the New York Times's junk-bond status is a result of its shoddy reporting."

After telling his history in politics, Gillespie wrote quite candidly about the press:

When I joined the White House in June 2007, I was still naïvely hopeful that we could get an honest hearing from the MSM. It did not take long for the scales to fall from my eyes. The national press corps loathed the president — not personally, I don’t think, but politically. Their reporting dripped with disdain, and their stories were frequently riddled with negative adverbs and adjectives. On issues like the Iraq War, the environment, and life, there was often little distinction between our treatment in liberal blogs and our treatment in major daily newspapers.  [...]

Today, newspapers are folding, Washington bureaus being shuttered. And as the national media have become smaller, they have become even more homogeneous — and that makes it easier for them to indulge their cultural biases and be swayed by liberal blogs.

Gillespie offered some suggestions:

First, when a White House press secretary presumes to be the assignment editor for the national news media, be prepared to respond to reporters following their marching orders.

Second, understand that the media will play the role of attack dog for Democrats, but not for Republicans. The media will stay on a negative story for days and continue pressing for answers when it involves a Republican. But, as a rule, when a story arises that is damaging to Democrats, the media will report or repeat it only if Republicans make it an issue, in which case they’ll frame the story as a Republican “attack.” Though most Republican candidates would rather not “wield the knife” themselves, these stories don’t get much attention unless they do. (Later, of course, the media go after the Republican for going negative.)

In 2006 the Left perfected the cycle: A blog posts an attack on a Republican candidate one day, the local daily paper runs a story two days later based on the blog account, and two days after that, a national Democratic campaign committee launches a “ripped from the headlines” attack ad citing the dailies. No Republican should be caught off-guard by this phenomenon again.

His conclusion:

At present, Democrats use the media to their distinct advantage: The mainstream press favors them, and they are better than Republicans at using alternative outlets. It was Barack Obama, after all, who proved that a candidate has the ability to disseminate facts and a message to millions of voters directly. Republicans need to turn this tide, and fast.

Sounds much like what I wrote a few weeks ago:

[T]he political war in America is indeed being fought in the media. Since their devastating loss in 2004 liberals have been doing a far better job waging this war than conservatives.

Those on the right should stop crying foul over what Team Obama is wisely doing to control the message and instead learn to play the game better.

As such, I couldn't agree more.

In today's

Parade magazine, David Gregory (D-NBC) stated that "I don't accept the proposition that I have an ideological point of view that comes through".  LMAO.  He went on to prattle, "I work very hard to avoid that".  Come on David, your bias shows every time you open your mouth, along with your comrades at the Politburo.

The only point I would disagree with Gillespie on is this, the media personally did hate GWB.  He "stole" the election from Algore, and they never forgave him for that.

It goes back farther than that.

"The only point I would disagree with Gillespie on is this, the media personally did hate GWB.  He "stole" the election from Algore, and they never forgave him for that.  "

When Clinton went into office they all rejoiced because he was like they were. They were finally in charge in it was time to save the world. When the likes of Limbaugh and Gingrich opposed Clinton they went into a rage. Then the Republicans took back the Congress and they were devastated. Then came Ken Starr and Whitewater and the impeachment thing.

They bleepin' despise Republicans with the heat of a thousand suns. They want them all to die and make no secret of it.

Because with a name like Obama... you know it has to be good.

Agree with your summation completely!

Obama's team pulled a fast one with his promise of a text message of the vice presidential nominee - received millions of cell phone numbers that he later put to good use communicating with these less-than-on-the-ball voters - and then released Biden's name at 3 a.m. while they were all asleep!

But you are right, Noel - the Republicans must keep up technologically or we will never get ahead!

David Gregory - your skirt is showing.

By admitting that he 'work(s) very hard to avoid' showing his bias, he is actually admitting that he does have a bias.

Previously, he has always just claimed the he had no bias and therefore he couldn't possibly showing any bias in his reporting.

But don't tell Gregory, he thinks he's 'passing' for a journalist.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

What liberal bias?

I can't recall a time when a failing industry reinvigorated itself by driving away half its customers at the start of a major recession. Really, how stupidly self-destructive could they be? Try burning half of your paychecks if you want to explore the concept.

Here's a clue: You can't run News through a Liberal sausage machine. It stops being News and is of interest only to people who want to buy sausage. To expect non-Liberals to continue to buy their "News" is bloody stupid.

And now they want government bailout money? Well, screw that.

Unfortunately, a healthy and free press is one of the cornerstones of a robust democracy, so we should see this for what it is: a reckless abdication of part of what makes America special.

It sure felt GOOD to cash those cancellation checks from

both Time and Newsweek ;-)  And guess what, the house feels and smells so much better since they are no longer polluting it!

Cape Conservative, Good for YOU

We can show these Libtards how much we give a flying crap about their mental inferiority complexes with our checkbooks. The 'LIB AGENDA' based media needs to DIE.

RIGHT THE FRICK ON!

Nothing will help

I agree with Gillespie's "suggestions" but disagree that something can be done about them.

The American people are not the same people they were back in 1980/84/88.

Those people would have thrown the messiah out in the Democratic primary.

Now, he is the President.  I don't care what message we have or what messenger we have to deliver it, or the medium to deliver it, or the speed/efficiency in which it was delivered.

The fact is, there was a revolution in 2008 November, and my NB fellow conservatives better realize it.  The messiah has been a joke of a leader for the past 60 days, and the "people", not to mention the purulent media, still love him.

He is too important to them to fail.

Even Reagan or Eisenhower couldn't win in this climate.  Prepare for 2nd class status indefinitely, folks.

Trial lawyers are the scum of the earth

Too late

I saw Huckabee the other night admitting to Hannity that he was wrong when he predicted that Obama would turn "moderate" when in office. It takes a long time to truly understand modern "liberals" (a misnomer). Underneath those smiles and empty promises, lies a rotten heart, bent on the personal destruction of anyone who disagrees with them. But they cover it so well. Unfortunately, their assurances of a good life for all always ends in the very good life for the few and chaos and enslavement for the many.

The push toward a sick, politically corrrect,"liberal" society began decades ago in America. Under the guise of beneficence, the modern relativists fooled the young and the ignorant and have already "changed" the world. It has gone so far now that we may never return to sanity. It probably is too late.

"Liberalism" is easy to take. No rational thought, no logic required. Simply emote. Anything goes. Live it. "Feel" it. In fact, if it feels good, do it. Live for today and all will be fine. Just go to sleep. The pod will engulf you.

Individual liberty, freedom of thought, real freedom of choice---forgetaboutit!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Re Huckabee

Like McCain, Huckabee is another one I never care to hear from again.

Amen to that!

Huckabee helped to get a Mexican Consulate built in Arkansas.  Some of my older relatives supported him, and it makes me sick.  In our daily lives we need to be compasionate and donate to good causes, but we don't need another president who is so compasionate he helps another country colonize us.  But it is all for naught I guess, with amnesty on the way.  Hello North American Union. I despise those traitors on both the Right and Left who seem to be helping bring you about.

P.S.  I am no "truther".  I understand we were attacked by muslim Terrorist on 911.

Huckabee lost all credibility...

...when he *cough* 'interviewed a couple of the "Housewives of NY" today. I was FLOORED. WTF?

It's bad enough that every time I tune into C-Span in the a.m. that every caller sounds like a liberal 'plant' but Huckabee interviewing a douchebag from a cheesy 'reality' show?

GAH!

Housewives of NY? are

Housewives of NY?

are they running for office or something?

Sad huh? :\

NS..

As such, I couldn't agree more.

First Ari, taking Matthews on - now Gillespie laying out the ground rules. Where have they been? (that one paragraph.. "Second, understand.."  I'd swear I sent it him +/-  back in '04 or so.) I hope he keeps talking. Now, if the R's can simply learn to rebut the slanted Q's put to them - by the MSM.

Good stuff. (;~> g

To quote my new favorite

To quote my new favorite Member of Parliment..."the media is acting like a Brezhnev era apratchnik".

Our voices could get heard, they will get heard.  If and only when we force our non-representatives to represent us.  These pseudo-princes in Italian shoes work for US!!!!

I refuse to accept second-class citizenry on any place on planet Earth.  I think better of myself then that, with all due respect.

These jokers in Italian shoes (that we pay for) will bend to our will when we exert it. Media be damned.  We've pushed a bunch of the mouthpieces of the media out of the picture already.  We can continue to do the same.

I am getting to be a royal pain in the butt to my congressmen.  But honestly, they agree with my point of view more than not.  What we need to do now, is network all over the country to help someone elses congressman that needs help fighting against the traitor democrats in congress.

Are we mad enough yet?  How much more are we going to take?  Are we all "frogs in a pot of water on the stove, slowly being heated up"? Fight back! Fight as if your life depended on it!  These congress people hate our ever loving guts, and the media does too!

yup, I've contacted my Rep. more in the last 60 days, than I did in my lifetime previous to the communist takeover.

On a similar note, I emailed my Senator, Red Karl Levin regarding the O'ster's plan to make vets pay for their duty-related injuries.  The reply I got started out, "You'll be happy to hear that I addressed the Senate on the AIG bonuses".  He's a commissar for life, so he doesn't really care what we think, but this was too much, even for him and his staff of left wing loonies.

Do you have a link for that?

That quote is so far off the scale that I have to read it for myself..It just doesn't seem possible!

I tried,

but the links don't seem to be there.  Just go to Blackfive, This Ain't Hell, or From My Position, just to name three that had stories.  Or the Real Revo.  Try this link, let me know if it worked.

UpNorth

Thanks, the link worked. I must admit I'm having a severe case of cognitive dissonance over this one. It's just doesn't match O's position on universal health care. (which anyone who knows me will tell you I'm a big fan of)

Must go lie down.

from Kerry & Kennedy!!!!  With 'do you know who I am's' running the country, they could care less what the great unwashed masses believe!  But I still write - probably give the interns a good laugh before being tossed in the circular file ;-)

Sorry, Ed, but the refs

Sorry, Ed, but the refs began donning dem jerseys way back in the Tricky Dick days.

And some would argue they were sporting them even before then.

This coup has gone on long enough. The time to put it down is NOW.

We have cowards for money men....

Until we find a George Soros of our own that will bankroll organizations we are doomed.  What I find so heinous are the Republicans with mony looking for ways to make money while the O is in office.

Until we can find someone with the bucks to break the liberal hegemony  over the media then we are screwed.  The money people have to get together and buy a bankrupt Tribune Companies or get into a hostile takeover of the New York Times.

Break the Times and the left will run.  They get their courage and their "balls" from being able to bully anyone into submissionn with the media.

We need to take these companies on in the boardrooms.  The three easiest targets are The Times, The Tribune Companies, and NBC.  If you can find someone willing to put their money where their mouth is like the billionaire Democrats are willing to do then we are just a bunch of jackals barking at the moon.
