Rush Limbaugh Publishes Letter to Obama: 'Keep Airwaves Free'

Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh published an open letter to Barack Obama Friday imploring the new president to prevent his Party from destroying free speech in America by censoring political views on the airwaves:

I have a straightforward question, which I hope you will answer in a straightforward way: Is it your intention to censor talk radio through a variety of contrivances, such as "local content," "diversity of ownership," and "public interest" rules -- all of which are designed to appeal to populist sentiments but, as you know, are the death knell of talk radio and the AM band?

Limbaugh's words were in a Wall Street Journal op-ed (h/t Hot Air):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

You have singled me out directly, admonishing members of Congress not to listen to my show. Bill Clinton has since chimed in, complaining about the lack of balance on radio. And a number of members of your party, in and out of Congress, are forming a chorus of advocates for government control over radio content. This is both chilling and ominous.

As a former president of the Harvard Law Review and a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, you are more familiar than most with the purpose of the Bill of Rights: to protect the citizen from the possible excesses of the federal government. The First Amendment says, in part, that "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." The government is explicitly prohibited from playing a role in refereeing among those who speak or seek to speak. We are, after all, dealing with political speech -- which, as the Framers understood, cannot be left to the government to police. [...]

Mr. President, we both know that this new effort at regulating speech is not about diversity but conformity. It should be rejected. You've said you're against reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, but you've not made it clear where you stand on possible regulatory efforts to impose so-called local content, diversity-of-ownership, and public-interest rules that your FCC could issue.

I do not favor content-based regulation of National Public Radio, newspapers, or broadcast or cable TV networks. I would encourage you not to allow your office to be misused to advance a political vendetta against certain broadcasters whose opinions are not shared by many in your party and ideologically liberal groups such as Acorn, the Center for American Progress, and MoveOn.org. There is no groundswell of support behind this movement. Indeed, there is a groundswell against it.

The fact that the federal government issues broadcast licenses, the original purpose of which was to regulate radio signals, ought not become an excuse to destroy one of the most accessible and popular marketplaces of expression. The AM broadcast spectrum cannot honestly be considered a "scarce" resource. So as the temporary custodian of your office, you should agree that the Constitution is more important than scoring transient political victories, even when couched in the language of public interest.

We in talk radio await your answer. What will it be? Government-imposed censorship disguised as "fairness" and "balance"? Or will the arena of ideas remain a free market?

Will Obama answer, or continue to let his minions suggest the Fairness Doctrine is coming?

Stay tuned.

A powerful

commentary, which is just what I have come to expect when I either hear Rush or read his words.

→ Right on Rush

Let's see if Obama will answer.

Don't bet on it.  He's too busy reducing America to a nation of beggars.

  • When Liberals raise the bar, expect The Limbo

Off topic but Obama speaking

Off topic but Obama speaking and dow down 100 pts.

No matter

It would be nice if Chairman Obama would answer BUT it really doesn't matter if he does or not.

The reason: There are far to many of us that will not tolerate even this FIRST removal of our freedoms AND if they try to do it, regardless of the form; THEY WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not the Bolshivek? Revolution where people stood by; we won't stand by. This is not the Holocaust where people quietly exited the cattle cars and marched compliantly to the gas chambers; we will be anything but compliant. This is not 2008 where we stood by and allowed a Marxist government to come into power in The United States of America. It won't happen again.

We will do whatever we have to do. There will be no Fairness Doctrine!

Actually Cool

I think his minions are trying to come up with a disguise to sneak it into another "must have" bill...

Wrong author name was used. It won't be read...

"Will Obama answer, or continue to let his minions suggest the Fairness Doctrine is coming?"

If Rush would have signed it using the name Saul Alinsky, Obama might take the time to read it.

"I need more cowbell!" SNL

I doubt president obam-uh

I doubt president obam-uh will read this fine piece of commentary from Rush.  If anything, it's probably fireplace fodder by now.

EL-RUSHBO...

While El-Rushbo is 100% correct about this, the fact remains that the progressive Dems, who will shove Obama around to make him sign off on whatever Pelosi, Reid, & the rest of them want him to do.

They will try to nuke the 1st Amendment, & the free speech arguement won't matter when conservative talk radio is deemed "HATE SPEECH". Watch em try to make that happen. They won't need the "Fairness Doctrine". Also, watch for ACORN & similar groups gain a foothold in the radio game under forced "LOCALISM". Great, college radio will be the norm.

The 2nd Amendent will be under threat, not by gun bans as much as the leftists will make it so cost prohibitive to own a gun. One idea is to make the rate of taxation on ammo will go so high that you won't afford it. Another is to mandate insurance that will be so expensive you will just say forget it.

Honorable mention goes to newspapers, who have been deciding to print the names of registered gun owners. Note to paper editors, if I am ever adversely affected by this sort of action, you will be held accountable.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Obama's too stupid to

Obama's too stupid to understand what Rush is talking about.

→ Really

Is he too stupid to sell America on Socialism?

~Only if they're stupid

Enough to buy. Rick's Rant and the pictures on Malkin's site have given me hope.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

I really think Barky isn't

I really think Barky isn't thinking about this.  He is very busy with other things, things like trying to figure out how to enter the Oval Office through a window.  He is still does not understand how the Presidency works.  It's going to be Congress that will try and ram this through like they did the Porkulus bill.  They are so pumped up with getting that piece of cr@p  passed that they think nothing will stand in their way and force through the Fairness Doctrine. After it is passed they will just tell Barky to sign it and don't worry about the specifics.

Uh....ahh...um....O will

Uh....ahh...um....O will pretend to have hands off on this as he has the FCC do his bidding...

Then declare...I knew nothing...I have no control over what the FCC decides...my hands are clean..."Look Ma...No Hands" type of thing.

O and crew have total control...and people with any political knowledge know this.

He counts on his lemmings to nod their heads in agreement with whatever he says...and that includes the majority of the msm.

I don't think that Rush

I don't think that Rush or any of his Ditto-heads understand that talk radio is a crisis which if the Democrats and Obama don't react to quickly will turn into a catastrophe for our country.  The only way for us to maintain our individuality is to conform with the norm and blindly follow our great leader.

If we had the Fairness

If we had the Fairness Doctrine during the election, I'm quite certain the republicans would have won bigtime.  Limbaugh played a huge part in Obama's election by confusing everyone so badly they didn't know what to do. First it was 'don't vote for McCain, he's a liberal' then when Obama came on strong the message was 'vote for Hillary' when that obviously wasn't working he started touting McCain again, but he had spoken so vehemently against him, his listeners had been jerked back and forth so much, many of them decided to not vote at all. Rush sprayed his hatred stink onto McCain so thick it couldn't be washed off no matter how hard he tried.

Wouldn't Rush's listeners just love to listen to him grill Feingold or Rahm Emanuel?  I would think you conservatives would love to see the Fairness Doctrine enacted so Rush could put the democrats on the spot on a daily basis on live radio, where he could have his way with them.

You don't get it

The Unfairness doctrine will mean the end of talk radio. Nobody wants to sponsor liberal talk radio that's why libs want to eliminate talk radio. With radio there is no visual, so you can't show pictures of filet mignon while you feed the sheep crap and get them to eat it like liberal television does.

Rush didn't swing this

Rush didn't swing this election. The liberal mainstream media is what won the election for Obama. I don't think there was that much confusion. The voting public was targeted by the msm and they hit the bullseye.

 I would think you

I would think you conservatives would love to see the Fairness Doctrine enacted so Rush could put the democrats on the spot on a daily basis on live radio, where he could have his way with them.

What we Conservatives would love to see is the heavy hand of the Federal Government out of our lives!

McCain

McCain had way more problems going for him than just Rush. I voted for him as the lesser of two evils, but it was a close call. I find him a thoroughly despicable man and don't care to hear another word from him. Had Hillary run against McCain, I maybe--might have voted for her.

But principally Obammy won because of his league of sycophants in the liberal media, for them Obammy could do no wrong. If you think this is about Rush and McCain, consider that either Hillary or Obammy would have wiped the floor with ANY of the Republican primary candidates.
