Just how widespread is Palin Derangement Syndrome?
Well, during Saturday's "Miss America Pageant," one of the contestants was actually asked a question about Sarah Palin.
Maybe even more delicious, the question was factually inaccurate.
I kid you not.
Las Vegas Weekly reported Saturday (video embedded below the fold):
The questions for the Q&A segment were asked by purportedly randomly chosen people, and a young woman asked Miss New York, Leigh-Taylor Smith, "During the presidential campaign, the media made a big deal about Sarah Palin being a Miss America contestant. Do you think that was fair?" Wrong! Palin, as Miss Wasilla, was a Miss Alaska contestant and didn't advance to The Show ...
Don't you hate it when people don't know the facts about past beauty pageants?
Sheesh. Get a life, ma'am.

Sun, 01/25/2009 - 14:36 ET by ApacheOther than being wrong about not being a Miss America contestant, I don't really see how this is an attack on Palin. The media did make a big deal about Palin competing in pageants and treated her like she was just a brainless pretty face. I don't think the woman asking the question thought that the contestants would support that media view.
Beauty Pageants
Sun, 01/25/2009 - 14:39 ET by BlondeFunny you should bring this up. Does being in a pageant automatically make one a bimbo? Apparently so according to the media, if one is a conservative.
BOR had both Gretchen Carlson and Lauren Green on his show the other night, discussing beauty pageants. (Gretchen Carlson bugs me as the chirpy morning hostess of F&F).
Back to BOR. Both of these women vociferously defended the pageant as a way to earn scholarship dollars. I was suprised to learn Carlson graduated from Stanford, with honors, and had attended Oxford, further that Lauren Green has a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern.
They were both extremely articulate, leading me to believe they're both underused at Fox (particularly the competent Lauren).
However, the "brush" of beauty pageant contestant has very obviously undercut their broadcasting careers. Palin too. Even though it was a means to an end.
Now the question is....are there any prominent liberal pageant contestants in the public eye who have been treated the same way?

Sun, 01/25/2009 - 16:34 ET by pbthinkerWhoa there Blonde, talk about that broad brush thing!!! I have little doubt they will both move up in their careers. If you look at the people, you perceive to be above them, they are also articulate and I'm sure well qualified to be where they are. The fact is we, as consumers of Fox's product, have not idea what they're required to do so, because we don't see them doesn't mean their talents aren't being utilized properly. I don't know how you can say the "brush of beauty pageant contestant has very obviously undercut their broadcasting careers. Palin too." I have no idea about their broadcasting careers, although I do know that Gretchen has talked about having children which could disrupt a career, so I can't say whether it's been hampered by being a beauty pageant contestant. As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, I'm sure the number of beauty pageant winners, elected to be governors of their state, is a single digit statistic. I wouldn't say she's been hampered one little bit. Just because Democrats want to make light of it doesn't mean much. She could have graduated from Harvard, Magna Cum Laude, been President of her class, had the highest grades on record, and they would have found a way to make her unqualified.
Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Sun, 01/25/2009 - 17:45 ET by BlondeDisagree all you'd like.
People fixate on the "beauty pageant winner" thing. Tell me again how the libs didn't fixate on Sarah Palin's time in a swimsuit?
Go back to BOR's site and find the segment. Gretchen absolutely stated it as a fact that once she had won MA, her "resume was wiped clean". Accomplished concert violinist, Stanford grad, attendance at Oxford....all gone. Won Miss America. Period, paragraph, end of story.
As further proof....Lauren Green is one of the best "news readers" on Fox....but she's been relegated to playing keyboards, first for Cal Thomas, and now for Huckabee (with a Masters in Journalism....hey, Mika...what is your degree again?). Before the BOR segment, I'd never seen her as a panelist on any Fox show. She's outstanding.
Fox has alot of very pretty eye candy. But after seeing this segment, I truly believe Gretchen is under-utilized on the fluffy F&F...and Lauren Green has always been a token (unfortunately)....she's as bright as Megyn, perhaps more so. I'd like to see her given a much more prominent role.

Mon, 01/26/2009 - 17:45 ET by thebutlerdiditI agree that Gretchen is a little over perky for my taste, but in her defense, she is not posing. This is her true persona. She is genuinely a little naive, she was raised in a strict family, in a very wholesome environment. I thought she was faking some of it, too, until they had her mom on a few times. She is the carbon copy of her mom! So, yeah, I prefer Allison Camerota's a little more laid backness, but I appreciate old Gretch for being who she truly is. (Unlike the affable Eva Braun, formerly of morning tv, who is definately a dumb bunny, and fakes her perkiness). I love Lauren Green, too. Super smart and gorgeous. Definately under used potential. Of course, Fox does have the smartest and best looking chicks on any news station. If I was a guy, I would be a loyal viewer. LOL

Sun, 01/25/2009 - 15:51 ET by katiejaneI would imagine that the Miss Alaska pageant is part of the overall Miss America pageant so it may not be that inaccurate to say that Gov Palin was a Miss America contestant. She was in a competition where the final result was the Miss America title. PDS is commonplace but IMO this was not a good example of it.

I am not understanding why people think she is feared. She´s funny.
It´s not very nice Palin is so disrespected, but you guys are no strangers to disrespecting women, I see the Janet Reno, Bella jokes, Yep, it´s funny
People can´t get enough of Palin, but no one ever talks about her political views, they talk about her saying ALSO TOO and NUK-U-LAR. They talk about corsages, turkeys, Mantan, winking to the camera and someone who is constantly taking a BM on the english language.

I understand alot of you LOVE her, truly do. Attacking Sarah Palin
Sun, 01/25/2009 - 23:43 ET by LoosMooseThe one thing about Sarah Palin that everyone seems to see is that the liberal left is absolutely 100% terrified of her. She represents everything that they stand against, not the least of which is independent thought and the ability to stand on her own merits. While unlike the hollywood drones that need Madonna and Sean Penn-laden to tell them how to vote, or a script to tell them what to say, she can manage a STATE governement not a civic garden club and a family and remain OUTSIDE the beltway, physically and politically.
The media doesn't have George W. Bashed anymore, so they MUST have a central target for their daily HATE speech, and no better target that Sarah Palin, who has more LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE THAN OBAMA. When you are a State Govenor, you can't just vote "present."

Mon, 01/26/2009 - 20:21 ET by upcountrywaterEstimates show Sarah Palin's assets top $1 million
WASILLA, Alaska -- Sarah Palin and her husband have pieced together a
uniquely Alaskan income that reached comfortably into six figures even
before she became governor, capitalizing on valuable fishing rights, a
series of land deals and a patchwork of other ventures to build an
above-average lifestyle.
Palin this week characterized herself as "an everyday, working-class
American" who knows how it feels when the stock market takes a hit.
Todd Palin took in $46,790 as a part-time oil production operator for
BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay, plus $46,265 in commercial fishing income and
$10,500 in Iron Dog snowmachine race winnings.
The Palins' assets seem enviable: a half-million-dollar home on a lake
with a float-plane at the dock, two vacation retreats,
commercial-fishing rights worth an estimated $50,000 or more and an
income last year of at least $230,000. That compares to a median income
of $64,333 for Alaskans and $50,740 for Americans in 2007, according to
the Census Bureau.
In addition to the Lake Lucille home, the Palins own recreational
property in two remote areas accessible by plane, all-terrain vehicle
or snowmachine.
Palin's plane would be worth from about $38,000 to $78,000 depending on
its condition, said Boyd Newman, owner of West One Aircraft Sales in
Caldwell, Idaho.
PT, IF ONE OBEYS THE LAW THEY NEED PERMITS.
Other family assets include Todd Palin's shoreside lease and
commercial fishing permit to harvest salmon from Bristol Bay each
season. Last year, the Palins took in $46,265 commercial fishing for
sockeye salmon over about a month.
Todd Palin said he purchased his permit from his grandfather in the
1970s. A limited number of permits and shoreline leases have been
issued, and the rights to them are often passed down through families
or sold. Holders pay a fee each year to renew them.
CAR WASH:
Barely a year into the land ownership, the man lined up to operate the
car wash backed out, and since neither couple wanted to run it, they
decided to sell the land and move on, Carolin Wells said. She couldn't
recall the purchase or sales prices of the land, but believes she and
her husband made a modest profit and the Palins broke even.
The Palins sold nearly five acres of undeveloped waterfront property on
the northeast shore of Wasilla Lake in 2005 to a local developer. The
sales price wasn't disclosed. The land now is subdivided into five
parcels, with two waterfront lots, two others behind those, and a
commercial lot. Duane Mathes, a local real estate agent showing the
property for the owner who bought it from the Palins, said the leveled
lots are listed for $149,500 each.
"A lot of Alaskans own a lot of land," Salmon said, "and if you're bright, you buy land in the path of progress."

Ok, Noel, what happened?!
Fri, 01/30/2009 - 12:45 ET by AshleeOh Noel, you were one of my favorite posters of stories here (still are albeit this has me scratching my head as to its relevance to anything.)
However, I fail to see two things here. #1, why this is any bit of news, aside from *looking* for something to complain about, and #2, they didn't say anything detracting or in defamation of Sarah, they simply asked if the focus on her being a beauty pageant contestant was fair, seeing as they seemed more focused on her stereotypically female qualities and points of life rather than the legitimate issues. I gotta agree with the question, it was *totally* unfair. Aside from the ambush of Couric, Sarah was forced not to talk about her views on the pressing issues, but rather, defend her daughter, and her wardrobe expenditures (which is about half of John Edwards hair budget each week I'm sure, Blago seems to be gunning for the bragging rights however for 'most expensive hair in the DNC.')
I think there is nothing particularly evil here, the announcer merely made a verbal misstep but the question not only still had validity, but if anything, was seemingly in defense of Sarah, if only from a feminist angle, but hey, anyone defending her is good in my book. And as for the Couric ambush, they put her on stage with the idea the interview would be a standard Q&A when Couric decided to throw some curveballs. Sure, Barry and Biden seemed to be better at the interview, but only because they, like most politicians on both sides, know where the interview is going LONG before it occurs. Sarah, sadly, was not given that privledge. That paired with a rediculously incapable McCain Camp that wanted Sarah covered up as if she were some harlet in Saudi Arabia, in my opinion, was a big reason she was seen as a flaw to McCain's campaign rather than the savior of it she should have and could have been.
I admit I hate when people bring up Sarah still and take digs, but this was more a defense of her, albeit arbitrarily, and the announcer is no dunce simply because she made a simple gaffe. The point was still there and true, 'did the media focus too much on her past as a stereotypical woman as opposed to a potential political leader?' We all know that answer....
