Conservative author Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity's former liberal co-host Alan Colmes were Dr. Phil's guests Thursday, and an astounding thing happened: the crowd seemed to like Coulter more than Colmes.
I kid you not.
The topics up for discussion were Barack Obama, the presidential campaign, and the media, and whenever Coulter said anything, the crowd applauded loudly.
Maybe even more delicious when Dr. Phil introduced former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan the audience booed (video embedded below the fold courtesy our dear friend MsUnderestimated, file photo):
Now THAT'S entertainment.

Oprah has always been a liberal. While I realize that Dr. Phil hooked up with her several years ago, Oprah has shown her true colors by refusing to interview Sarah Palin.

January 23, 2009 - 11:57 ET by SQL_SamThis was a great show, I need to thank my wife, she told me she wanted to watch Dr. Phil and I was about to gag, then I noticed the Ann Coulter was going to be on and I was like COOL!!.
Ann was indeed the favorite, and people agreed, Dr. Phil to his credit let her answer and didnt rush her, which made it even better. They also had a segment "after the show" at the end where they had some stupid liberal chick complaining about the"tone"about saying Obama's middle name and Ann just put her in her place and you could see the disapointment on her face - I think she figured she was safe being in Hollywood, but that crowd was definiately not tainted to the liberal side!

EVERY move that Hussein and his socialist Senate and House propose must be opposed openly and strenuously unless it passes the taste test for the principles that have made this country strong and free. ALL Republicans in office must be brutally pounded if they even THINK about supporting leftist, liberal policies and the 1st SOB to be tarred and feathered should be that traitor of a John McCain who is already advocating Hussein policies IN THE SPIRIT OF BIPARTISONSHIP and we can all thank him for getting us into this mess in the 1st place.
Sarah Palin should have kicked his wrinkled old butt off the ticket and run for president herself.
WE WILL GET ANOTHER CHANCE though, won't we now!

stay classy Alan
January 23, 2009 - 10:17 ET by candanceAnn is sitting there giving Obama the benefit of the doubt and trying to criticize him in a lighthearted tone, while Alan is blaming Bush for Katrina and calling Sarah Palin stupid. No wonder the audience didn't take kindly to him.
But yet Ann is the one who is "mean spiritied." Whatever. Just another example of the left being classy.
This typical white girl will always embrace what's right.
Liberals
January 23, 2009 - 10:27 ET by GothampcOne of the things you have to remember is that liberals always act primarily from an emotional viewpoint. They will always hate Ann because she uses her intellect over her emotion. In the years that I watched "H&C" Alan rarely offered an intellectual argument. Most of the time, he built his arguments on faulty logic.
I really liked what Ann said
January 23, 2009 - 10:30 ET by SeashellI really liked what Ann said about Scott McClellan. He did betray Bush and everyone knows it. She wasn't afraid to say it to his face. Go Ann!
You go girl!
January 23, 2009 - 10:36 ET by Dee BunkAnn Coulter was awesome and said it like it is. I'm finding that once again I was duped by the lib media - she's not anywhere near as classless and nasty as the majority of liberal commentators.
She's so right - the nastiness is on one side. Liberals are bad losers and winners. It's ridiculous how they and Obama get the credit for Republicans being more civil and better people. It's a joke. It's very sad.
We can only have Dems in power to have civil discourse - it's not right. It stinks. This country is going down the tubes figuratively and literally. Liberals have been watching way to much American Idol and other reality TV and think that the way people are treated on those shows is normal discourse. Of course the liberal sitcoms and dramas are bad too. They portray libs as reasonable people and Reps as evil. Liberal celebrities have destroyed our culture. It's done. Don't know how we can ever get it back.

January 23, 2009 - 11:34 ET by SeashellLiberal celebrities have destroyed our culture. It's done. Don't know how we can ever get it back.
I don't think we can really "get it back". To much damage has been done. I do however think that people are starting to really "wake up" and see what is happening to us. Conservatives now have a voice (thanks to the internet) and we are speaking out. We total about half of the country so our opinions should mean something. They will if we speak out loud enough and long enough so they know we are not going away. We might not be able to "get it back", but maybe we can prevent things from getting worse.
Rush was on Hannity's show
January 23, 2009 - 14:39 ET by SmartypantsRush was on Hannity's show last night and he made the point that liberals completely control modern pop culture. He stated that conservatives cannot reasonably expect young people to tune in today's music, tv, movies and books/magazines, etc. and then turn out every four years and vote for Republicans. It's not going to happen. I completely agree. Most people under 25 (even older) have had their skulls so shaped by these pop influences and their teachers/professors, it is going to be an uphill battle to win these people back in their more mature adult years.
The worst
January 23, 2009 - 17:57 ET by ahusserConstitutional amendment after prohibition was giving 18 year olds the right to vote. What were we thinking? I wouldn't allow anyone to vote until 30 years of age. The next worst is lifetime tenure to federal judges and that is not even an amendment.
Speaking of the Constitution I would like to see an amendment to make states have a special election for vacated seats because the appointment process seems tainted with dealmaking, self-serving politics and corruption and runoff elections when the general election is too close to call rather than the Franken debacle in MN.

January 23, 2009 - 11:54 ET by slickwillie2001Scott McClellan has destroyed his own career by his perfidy. The liberals might fete him on their talk shows, but no liberal is going to hire him for fear they will turn on them someday. Before the book he was not highly regarded by Republicans, but was a faithful soldier for Bush. He might have been thrown a bone in a future Republican state or federal administration, a la Shinseki. Now they won't touch him either.
He also doesn't have the talent necessary to carry himself as Huckabee may be able to do. He's done. Sad case.

January 24, 2009 - 00:58 ET by thebutlerdiditHas anyone else read his book? It is not as vanilla as he tried to portray it here. It was down right nasty. I noticed that goober Alan was bringing up Katrina, etc., did he get the new talking point message from the new WH site posting about Bush and Katrina? He, and McClellan are absolute a holes. I have tried to be fair to Alan, listening to his radio program. I was never able to take over 10 min or so. He is not only boring, he is just like on the old H&C show, just reading his points. Dr. Phil better than Oprah!
January 23, 2009 - 12:07 ET by jarrett.edwardsJust from the people I know, viewers of
Dr. Phil tend to be more conservative then Oprah's. I think that
perhaps her conservative viewers moved over to Dr. Phil, when his
show started. I think its great that there is one daytime show where
conservatives are not as demonic. I truly loved the booing of Scott
McClellan, he is just despicable.

Ann's terrific, and so is Dr. Phil
January 23, 2009 - 12:48 ET by Debbie_SI've never been a big fan of Ann Coulter, but she's terrific on this video. It makes a big difference when the host isn't openly hostile. Dr. Phil is very fair to Ann. He's even-handed, yet asks tough questions. The result is fantastic. Finally a conservative like Ann gets a chance to give her opinion, without having to don boxing gloves, and she comes off as smart and reasonable.
Great program -- thanks for
January 23, 2009 - 12:53 ET by lotrGreat program -- thanks for posting it Noel. The audience was open minded toward the valid points Ann raises. I'm glad she set the record straight about the "negativity" in the public discourse coming primarily from the Left, citing the specific example about Pres. Bush getting booed at the inauguration.
And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. -- Edgar Allan Poe
I don't get it
January 23, 2009 - 13:30 ET by katainkenthow do people get SO wrapped around the axle about Ann's approach to the single mother subject they can never see their way clear to the bottom line. She isn't seriously targeting to EVERY single mother in America. To sit and argue every exception devalues... diminshes the bigger problem at hand and it gets lost under piles of minutia, when forced into detailing out every person's individual story.
I like Dr. Phil. He's very much about personal responsibility which I have always valued. His guests get on my nerves fairly often though, as with much daytime television. I guess I am just getting old and crotchety ;)

Great point, kata. I felt
January 23, 2009 - 14:43 ET by SmartypantsGreat point, kata. I felt the same way myself. When Coulter was on "The View," the liberal ladies treated her as if she was criticizing every single mother in the country. That is not her message at all. She is criticizine the glorification of single-motherhood by the media and pop culture; that is a big difference. Many single mothers do just fine raising children, who are well adjusted and will not get into trouble. That fact still does not mean the mass media should encourage single women to have and raise babies without a father.

BTW, I just hate your tag line. ;-)
Syndication
January 23, 2009 - 14:50 ET by km2002Dr. Phil is syndicated; he can appear on any station, network affiliate or not. (In Baltimore, he recently jumped from the NBC affiliate, who carries Oprah, to the CBS affiliate.) Now, of course, most networks are pretty hostile to conservatives generally; witness the numerous posts about the losers on CBS, especially on "The Early Show," fawning all over liberals of any persuasion (esp. Democrats) while baring their fangs at any conservative (esp. Republicans; see their shameful treatment of Sarah Palin at every opportunity).

January 23, 2009 - 15:39 ET by ivybelle1I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but no the world has not turned upside down. Dr. Phil's people invited the Free Repubic people, and UCLA Briun Republicans, who all LOVE Ann. So, the audience had about 45 people in it that agree with Ann already.
This isn't a negative, I love Coulter too! Just letting everyone know, so we can all be informed.

Thanks for the info. I quit watching these type of shows so long ago, I couldn't remember what I thought most of the audience seating I thought they had from Donahue on down the road from there, but it always looked like quite a few.
bt
January 23, 2009 - 22:50 ET by sherylsimsI think they might make it look like more because of the way it is filmed. They have about 50 or so down on stage level, then bleacher style seats that go around two thirds of the studio. But when they pan the crowd with the cameras they can get just about everyone in the shot because the bleachers are probably only 8-10 rows high, but wide. (I don't have much else to contribute tonight, so I am giving you the details of the inside of Dr. Phi's studio. Geesh I need to get a life!)

I noticed this also
January 24, 2009 - 20:08 ET by nwahsI noticed that too, and it struck me because I remember when Dr. Phil first came on the air, he stressed a very anti-liberal idea, accountability. In recent years it seems he's tried to moderate his strict stance on accountability. I don't know if it was Oprah pressure or just the Hollywood influence on him, but he seems less a man of his convictions these days. When Coulter was on, it reminded me how his core audience still seems to be people who value accountability. I have to say, it was refreshing.
