For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Lisa Gladden (D), a Maryland state senator, made the following asinine statement last week (video embedded right):
It doesn’t matter if the state of Maryland is broke as long as Barack Obama is President of the United States – this is great!
Isn't that special?
A freelance writer from Maryland had this to say:
When the Maryland General Assembly meets each January, citizens of our great state are sure to be blessed with a reduction in civil liberties (we have a law forcing eight year-olds to ride in car seats), an increase in taxes (the last gathering saw an increase in our sales tax), and something as silly as last year’s State Exercise legislation (umm, walking) or State Dessert bill (the Smith Island cake).
But apparently, poverty, crime, taxes, homelessness, and unemployment are of secondary concern to Baltimore State Senator Lisa Gladden, a democrat, who showed up at the opening of the General Assembly session sporting a flashy Obama watch. [...]
Gladden, in a video interview you can see here, told the intrepid political reporter, “It doesn’t matter if the state of Maryland is broke as long as Barack Obama is going to be President of the United States – this is great!”
Not so great if you’ve just lost a job, your home, your 401k or your health insurance.
But to Lisa Gladden, it doesn’t matter if we starve in the streets; nor does it matter that Maryland state workers are being furloughed; nor does it matter that crime in the city she represents is among the worst in the country; nor does it matter that her mayor (Sheila Dixon) has been indicted on charges ranging from theft to perjury; nor does the $1 billion dollar shortfall facing the state.
As long as Obama is president we can just put on our rose-colored eyewear, hold hands, and enjoy the ride to hell in our Barack-logoed handbasket.
What do you think about Gladden's statements, and what do they say about the state of our nation?

Sun, 01/18/2009 - 12:18 ET by Prester JohnObama Announces "Organizing for America"
President-elect Barack Obama announced the formation of a new group known as "Organizing for America" that aims to continue the grassroots advocacy that the former Illinois Senator began in his presidential campaign.
"As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead," Obama said in a video message e-mailed to supporters (and reporters) this morning. "That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities."
The new group will be the flagship of "Obama 2.0" as many people have taken to calling the transformation of the political organization created during the 2008 campaign.
The new group will work within the Democratic National Committee -- led by Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine -- to advance the Obama agenda. "President-elect Obama has laid the foundation to meet the great challenges facing our nation, but we can succeed only if we build grassroots support for the administration's agenda," said Kaine in a release announcing the formation of Organizing for America.

Maryland is a diverse state with Atlantic beaches, the Chesapeake Bay waterways, farmland, major metroploitan centers, and Appalacian mountains. It is home to two of the richest per capita counties in the country, has several world-renowned hospitals, and the most vital Intelligence Gathering facility in the country. Yet it has been, with the exception of Governor Erlich and Lt. Gov. Michael Steele of the previous administration, a one-party state with massive fiscal problems year-after-year. Crime in Baltimore always ranks in the top ten or 15 nationally, and sexually transmitted diseases (not a crabs pun) are our city residents' greatest gift to society. And yet, the DC and Baltimore metro areaas continue to vote these assinine crooks into office every election cycle. It is why, in another couple of years once my son has graduated high school, I will be packing up and moving south. Any recommendations?

Whatever, this intellectually vacant woman's statement is on par with Jesse Jackson Jr. saying, about Barack Obama, that there should be another book in the Holy Bible.
Or Spike Lee saying that history can now be devided into BB and AB: Before Barack and After Barack.
Maybe, though, in American history we can do just that. Should we survive that long.

What we are witnessing are
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 16:06 ET by GregEWhat we are witnessing are millions of Americans who have become so awestruck by a mere human being, Barack Obama, that there are probably hundreds of thousands of them, if not actual millions, who have vested so much emotion in the man himself that there will be nothing he can do wrong and any critique of his ideas will be deemed a personal attack on their messiah.
And on top of that, those same people would defend Obama before they would actually defend America, if the choice had to be made.
When the John Edwards mistress story broke, he mentioned that he reached a point during which he began to think he could do anything he wanted, and was invincible. With Obama having millions regarding him on a plain similar to Jesus, what is it going to take for him not to quickly begin to think the same thing that John Edwards was thinking? Difference here is the millions that will defend Obama before they'll defend America. You will see it as you criticize his stance on issues or his proposals. His cult followers will be unable to rationally discuss issues, but instead will get rather upset rather quickly, as they are instead viewing your critique as a critique of their messiah personally instead of a critique of ideas.
Think about this.
I think criticising
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 17:12 ET by ahusser"Der little schwarzen fuhrer" may become illegal and those minions defending him against any and all criticism may answer such criticism with violence. But I have my tin foil hat on today.

I have been thinking about this
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 17:14 ET by StarAZI wonder if there isn't a chance that with the short Am attn span and the hard confusing economic stuff, and being broke, sleepless and scared, the glow might faded fairly fast. Yeah, he's black, yeah, we're great, yeah, racism is finally over, etc. Then...OK, the morning after. Those Kool-Aid dregs with cig butts in them aren't going to look so great. Also people don't follow the news much...And will begin to do so even less once the concerts and train rides are over.

Sun, 01/18/2009 - 18:27 ET by BlazerThats not a death threat. Every one here at NB knows my ardent stand on the 2nd amendment and how passionate I am about it.
I was simply stating the fact that if someone were to come to my home and try and take away my civil or constitutional rights given to me by the founding fathers of this great nation, I would simply excercise my right to bear arms to defend those rights granted to me by the Constitution Of The United States Of America.

Mayor Busted in Sex Sting-Apparently Had No Party Affiliation
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 22:41 ET by R D HelmNormally, I don't much go for the "Name That Party" articles here at NB, but his was one I couldn't ignore.
Seems the Mayor of Racine, Wisconsin, got nailed in a sting operation trying to hook up with what he thought was a 14yo girl.
Surprise! It was a member of the law enforcement community he was actually communicating with.
The dummy has had to cancel his scheduled trip to the future Dear Leader's anointing on Tuesday as well. What a shame.
Apparently whoever runs the city's website broke a finger (just kidding) in the effort at getting all the D's off the website.
Apparently the AP didn't get to the site in time, as there is no mention of this goober's party affiliation anywhere in their story:
