MSNBC's Rachel Maddow used the occasion of President George W. Bush's final address to suggest that he was to blame for the destruction of New Orleans as well as the felling of the World Trade Center.
In her Thursday program after the President's farewell to the nation, with a photograph of Bush in the right of the screen that included the disgusting caption "Goodbye, Good Riddance," Maddow continued with the attacks that have made MSNBC a journalistic disgrace for years.
At one point, she even scolded the President for not doing an exit interview with either her or Keith Olbermann (video embedded below the fold with partial transcript):
Today's dramatic plane crash in the Hudson River in New York City drew attention away from the scheduled big news story of the day, which was of course the end of the public phase of the presidency of George W. Bush. This is the start of the part where we don't have President Bush to kick around anymore. That said, given his approval ratings and the state of the world his tenure has left us with there can be no promise that we won't be compelled to try to keep on with the kicking around.Isn't that special? I guess this means we can count on Bush Derangement Syndrome to last well after Tuesday's inauguration of Barack Obama. How delightful. But I digress:
The president's farewell address just 90 minutes ago was his last public event, his last speech to the country, and puts a cap on a furious Karl Rove and Karen Hughes produced legacy polishing tour that they undertook shortly after Election Day. There were more exit interviews than you can count on all your fingers and all your toes including long sit-downs with pretty much everyone on television except, you know, me and Keith and stuff.Wow. Is this woman so deluded that she thinks the President should have done interviews with two of the biggest Bush-haters in the country?
There was a big final press conference full of defiance and self-defense that left most observers scratching their collective heads, and got everybody mad about Katrina all over again. And there was the announcement that first lady Laura Bush is working on a book that will detail her own experiences in the White House all in the name of spinning the history of the Bush administration to the positive evidence to the contrary be damned.
But tonight was truly it. President Bush's farewell address, the official farewell address. His official goodbye. His valedictory. His final public appearance as President of the United States. Now despite the overt spin those of us who keep track of things like this know the real context of Bush's bye-bye tonight is this: When President Bush arrived in January 2001 the unemployment rate was 4.2%, now on his way out it is 7.2%. When he arrived there was a budget surplus of $237 billion. Today we are looking at a $1.2 trillion deficit. When he arrived the consumer confidence index was 116. Now it is 38. When he arrived there were 40 million Americans without health insurance today there are 46 million. And of course when he arrived in January 2001 we were fighting protracted wars in zero countries that we had preventively invaded and justified occupying through manipulated intelligence. Today we have been in Iraq for 5 1/2 years and counting and the war in Afghanistan is even older than that. Also there was a vital jewel of an American city called New Orleans back then and a World Trade Center. It is against that proud backdrop the George W. Bush presidency publicly ended today.
Though one could certainly argue the economic stats and how much Bush is to blame -- especially given the fact that he inherited a recession in 2001 and did nothing to cause the collapse of the financial services industry -- it is Maddow's suggestion that the President caused the destruction of New Orleans as well as the felling of the World Trade Center that is most disgusting.
If Maddow wants to make such claims on Air America radio, fine. But for a major American so-called news outlet to spread such invective shortly after the final address by an outgoing President is truly shameful.
How sad that MSNBC has basically devolved into a liberal blog.
Readers that can stand it should watch the entire video to witness Arianna Huffington similarly disgracing herself.

January 16, 2009 - 11:54 ET by bertkillianIf I didn't have a little time to waste and actually played a bit of the video above, I would never have believed it. You are definitely mal-nourished. I think you give President Bush way too much credit. I mean, who would have thought, until you brought it up, that he had the power force thousands of people in New Orleans to stay put; despite the around the clock coverage of the impending disaster; man is he good.
Or, now that you brought it up, I guess we were deluged with the press reports back in 2000 about President Bush on the golf-course with Osama, plotting how to drive airplanes into the World Trade Centers; oh, that's right, he was governor of Texas and someone else was President.
You are definitely sick and in need of care. I must be sick also as I am still commenting on your snide-punkass reporting on a sitting President. So easy to join the fray hey Rachel. You are not a reporter; more like a member of the world's oldest profession.

January 16, 2009 - 11:58 ET by BKeyserThis is one of the most disgusting journalists on any medium today. I would almost be angry about such comments, accept that would bring me down to her level- this is clearly an angry, angry little mind. Can you imagine a staff meeting over there at MSNBC? Must be like an insane asylum! Planet of the Apes comes to mind. But I digress...
Having never lived in Cuba, or the USSR, I'm anxiously awaiting the next several years to read the glowing reports of how well the new POTUS is serving us, his subjects. How a $2 trillion debt and consumer confidence levels of 40 are the new standard. How even though several US cities have been attacked by freedom fighters (suicide bombers) we are working on ways to allow them to explode their munitions without having to sacrifice their lives, thereby helping to repair relations with the Islamic world. How because there are still millions of people with jobs and the unemployment rate is under 12%, he has saved all those jobs for us. And how Hillary, working with new Russian President Putin, has sold Alaska (and all of her inhabitants.) Maddow's headline: "Goodbye Sarah Palin, Good Riddence." And how Social Security has been saved through the passing of the new "Euthenasia Law." And how Universal Healthcare has resulted in decreased population and more job openings.
Ah, yes. What a wonderful 4 years we're in for...

January 16, 2009 - 12:02 ET by tmullen20736All I can say is we reached this low years ago. There will plenty of time for conservatives to call Obama out on his inabilities. The real question is will this leftist media, will they have the guts to ask the tough questions. Or will we have to listen to another 4 years of blame Bush for everything.Character is something that these bone heads lack so they have to act like babies when it comes to the sitting President.
One last thing didn't you love when Bush said "I love my wife" he is such a caring man.

One more thing
January 16, 2009 - 12:10 ET by tmullen20736I like to set the record straight about conservatives. We conservatives did not always support this president in everything he did. We called him out on the way he and the libs try to shove illegal immigration reform down our throats. I am not at all happy for this President not pardoning the border patrol agents. The out of control spending was a constant thorn in my side. Then finally the phony baloney bail-outs. Not only did this President start us on the trail but when the auto industry bail-out failed he over-rode the vote and gave them a bailout anyway.
Why do I mention this? Because conservative do not 'back our guy up on everything'. We are fully prepared to take a fight to our sitting officials when the need arises. Do the libs do this? The answer is No. Do not be expecting to see any lib come out against the Great Obama on any issue at all. If O keeps us in Iraq, they won't speak, if O doesn't shut down Gitmo, the silence will be evident.
That's why conservatives must do everything in their power to make their voices be heard to any and all media outlets.

January 16, 2009 - 12:30 ET by Hunter12Rachel, Four things led to the problems in New Orleans: 1). It's built in a hole. 2). It's surrounded by water. 3). Corrupt Democrats have been responsible for spending 100 years of levee money on anything but the levees to protect it. 4) Stupid Democrats were responsible for providing it's succor after items 1, 2, and 3 interacted with a hurricane. President Bush was barred by the US Constitution from acting until Governor Blanco asked him to help. It's called "States Rights". Look it up.

Funny thing about the city, the old part didn't seem to flood during Katrina. It was the urban sprawl that seemed in danger. Guess those old guys knew what they were doing. It's sad that to protect the sprawl, they're planning to put the historic places in danger.

The reason the French Quarter (known as the Vieux Carre', french for the old square) does not flood, is it is the location of the original French settlement. They built on the highest ground and the surrounding areas were mostly swamp. Over the years as the swamps drained people built there.
The historic preservation societies sometimes do more harm than good to the historic places. Our biggest enemies are the incompetent and crooked politicians we are addicted to. Promise some people a free ride and you have their vote.

Welcome to the era of unity, you racist!
Not sure if it is sinking
January 16, 2009 - 21:22 ET by general companyBut certainly many of the buildings have been sinking. Coco touched on some of the real problems with NO. The big problem isnt all because much of it is below sea level, the biggest problem is that they developed the surrounding swamps and lowlands, so when there are floods there isnt any place for the water to go immeadeatly. So in-fact maybe some of the wet lands should be replaced, that has been in the works for about 20yrs BTW. Also I would not put to much stock in stories about folks shooting at the Coast Gaurd, there were so many false stories at that time it was unbelievable. 400 dead in the Superdome, and so on.
While I live just north of the city and dont get down there much, there is a ton of fun to be had down there. The music is fantastic as well as the food. Some of the festivals are only in one city, and they are for the most part fun for everyone. We are a Red State, with a Blue city.

Katrina vs Ike
January 16, 2009 - 12:31 ET by JIMMY1660to blame GWB for Katrina??? how about the Gov and Mayor. Ike came roaring into Texas and they survived. Mississippi, Alabama, who also faced Katrina, and came back. Did/does Texas, Mississippi and Alabama have better Government officials??
Once warned, get out!!!that's how everyone but New Orleans, officials handled it. GWB did not create Katrina.
Once again the economy is GWB fault. How about, the Senators and Congressmen who had the banks circumvent rules and laws. How about the unqualified folks in those positions.Kissing babies, and shaking old ladies hands, is something they can do. Handle tough times, way too tough for incompetent -ill equipped buffoons.
Barny Frank-Chris Dodd-Frank Raines need to be looked at hard and long for their efforts to destroy America banking rules and the current problems.
I think GWB will be blamed for all that is wrong for the next 4 years. BHO and his appointees will get a free pass. AG who loves terrorists, Treasury head who can not handle his own tax issues.(he was reimbursed for the amount how is that not tax fraud? how can this woman have any credibility.)

When talking comes to an end
January 16, 2009 - 12:33 ET by KC MulvilleI love listening to (not mention expressing) opinions about the news of the day. It's the intellectual equivalent of sport. It's not only a crucial part of democracy, at times it can be just plain fun.
But you can't engage in argument with the Maddows and Huffingtons of the world, because they don't think they're the other team. They think they're the referees. They don't want to defend anything - they just want to place the ball where it suits them. They don't care about presenting reasonable debate, because they don't think they're debating in the first place. Of course, they then place the ball to the disadvantage of conservatives, even when liberals haven't offered any defense.
How do you reject the media as referee? Stop listening to them. When they put the ball down, pick up the ball and move it to where it should be.
How does that metaphor play out in real life? The archaic liberal media conglomerates are going out of business fast. The old media is infuriated that the bloggers are refusing to play by the old media's rules, and the old media is trying to oppose them through ridicule and sneering condescension (see Barnicle, Mike, of MSNBC).
Maddow, Huffington, Matthews, Olbermann, USA Today, Newsweek ... they all think they're referees, but the game is being played elsewhere.

January 16, 2009 - 12:56 ET by SentryDanWhen President Bush arrived in January 2001 the unemployment rate was 4.2% (who controlled congress-the Republicans), now on his way out it is 7.2% (who controls congress-the Democrats). When he arrived there was a budget surplus of $237 billion (who controlled congress-the Republicans). Today we are looking at a $1.2 trillion deficit (who controls congress-the Democrats). When he arrived the consumer confidence index was 116(who controlled congress-the Republicans). Now it is 38 (who controls the congress-the Democrats). When he arrived there were 40 million Americans without health insurance (who controlled congress-the Republicans) today there are 46 million (who controls congress-the Democrats). And of course when he arrived in January 2001 we were fighting protracted wars in zero countries that we had preventively invaded and justified occupying through manipulated intelligence (the Democrats voted in favor of going after the terrorists in both Afghanistan and Iraq. And the wars were based on intel that was not manipulated by our intel services.). Today we have been in Iraq for 5 1/2 years and counting and the war in Afghanistan is even older than that (Bush told the politicians and the people that this would be a long struggle). Also there was a vital jewel of an American city called New Orleans back then and a World Trade Center. It is against that proud backdrop the George W. Bush presidency publicly ended today.
Oh, BTW, you can’t really have a budget surplus as long as we have a national debt. Any surplus has to be applied to reduce the national debt.
Remember folks, Freedom isn't Free. It was bought with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women who are serving and who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

January 16, 2009 - 20:35 ET by UpNorthDan, too bad we can't get you on TV to counter all the BS from Maddow, Olberdork, Tingle Matthews and that hag from Huffpotty. And don't forget, Reid, Pelosi and Biden, among others, were all briefed in on all the tactics used to get info from enemy combatants captured in battle, and signed off, in many cases suggesting not enough was being done.
The debacle in NO has been covered well, the dems dropped the ball, not W.
Face it: Maddow is the perfect Obama bot-twit . . .
January 16, 2009 - 13:00 ET by CKA in Red State USAThat's she a disgrace and numbnuts are givens.
That she's self-absorbed is another given.
That she lacks objectivity, civility and courtsey are other givens.
But Obama invited her and others of her ilk to meet with him privately, just the other day. Nine others, I think. Thus Obama considers her a valuable "liberal" outlet of whatever she lets out.
Her chickens have not come home to roost. But when they do, I expect her to whine and squirm, like a good litlle Obamabot.
She is an embarrassment.
And what MSNBC did with allowing she to spew such execrable material, as it also allowed Chris Matthews, is beyond shameful.
Since nothing seems to matter much except money to the networks, perhaps it's time for conservatives to organize campaigns to put NBC and MSNBC advertisers on notice that the time's come for a choice: rein in these excrement-spewing dweebs and the networks, or experience consumer penalties.

The Democrat governor of Louisiana, a white woman, refused to cooperate with President Bush when the president asked for her consent to begin a mandatory evacuation four days before the storm.
The Democrats in the Louisiana homeland security office also refused to let the Red Cross bring truckloads of food, water and supplies to the Superdome.
Since 1980, Louisiana emergency personnel knew that the levees in New Orleans would not withstand a category 3 or 4 hurricane. Yet, the Democrats in Congress filibustered President Bush’s energy bill which was introduced in 2001 and contained $540 million for repairing the levees in New Orleans."

January 16, 2009 - 13:59 ET by Meredith1966Another little point to get right, Rachel--there aren't 40 million or 46 million Americans without health insurance. You can't count the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in that number for, if you can't figure it out for yo'self, THEY AREN'T AMERICANS! Damn, are you really that effin' stupid? Or, are you really that determined to mislead the legal citizens of this country the way you charge President Bush with having misled them about Iraq? You're a stinking, smart assed liar who can't see past your own hatred of Bush in order to get the facts straight. Do your homework, Rachel, and you might gain some credibility with those of us on the other side of the political fence from you.
Oh, and Bush was as responsible for the destruction of New Orleans and the Twin Towers as President Clinton was for the Murrah building in Oklahoma City. Clinton wasn't then, and Bush isn't now.

Maddow The Moron
January 16, 2009 - 14:07 ET by Captain KirockNewsflash: Katrina was a natural disaster. Unfortunately, we can't stop those.
Here's some other facts: Hurricanes happen in the Gulf, tornadoes happen in the Mid West, forrest fires happen in the West, blizzards happen in the North, and earthquakes happen in California. Accept it and move on.
Again - Rachel Who?
January 16, 2009 - 14:29 ET by rammingspeedHer ratings on Air America and the embarrassing ratings on cable are all that's needed to put Rachel Maddow in her place. The woman is a BDSer, who is also a hater of all things not leftist since her beginnings. Let the crazies rant so we know them for the trash that they are.

January 16, 2009 - 15:04 ET by SentryDan"To many facts, to many facts, my mind can't handle all these facts!!", Madcow said as she ran screaming into the night.
I traveled the 170 miles of Interstate 59 from Meridan, MS to Slidell, LA about 3 weeks after Katrina. Based on what I saw and how long it takes to cut and remove a tree, along with the downed power lines, the job would have taken at least 12 hours to do with a large crew of men and equipment. Add that to how long it took the storm to pass and you are looking at the better part of a day and a half to get down to the NO area. Then the bridges going in to NO were screwed up and had to be check to see if they were passable before heavy trucks and equipment could be moved across them.
Let's face it, the screwup was the fault of the local and state governments. The Feds may have had to assume a small fraction of the blame, but it was a very small fraction.

Dan, You are forgetting one
January 16, 2009 - 15:24 ET by Hunter12Dan, You are forgetting one very simple fact. President Bush is a Republican. His critics are stupid liberals. Has anyone ever heard a legitimate, logical argument about why President Bush is at fault, beyond my stated fact? He could have massed federal assistance at the Tennessee border, and then when Mother Nature sent the storm to Texas, his critics would have blamed him for not having the foresight to have aid better positioned. The storm could have dog-legged into Mexico and then the cost of massing unneeded aid could have been ridiculed for years. The critism has been that he flew over the storm damage and didn't predict that the people on the ground would be wrong and the levees would be over-topped, and then he didn't force Blanco to take aid she didn't realize she needed. I'm mad because he never sent me winning lottery numbers. Someone with the abilities the MSM gives him credit for should have been able to get me a Powerball or two.

You and me both, ...
January 16, 2009 - 17:08 ET by SentryDanYou and me both, Hunter. I could sure use a PB win right about now.
You are right about the supplies thing. I'm in Alabama and Maxwell Air Force Base is used as a staging area for natural disasters (hurricanes) for this area including NO. I know what goes on with the Federal aid.
I know the hate for Bush is so great it wouldn't matter if he was leaving office with the national debt paid off and every American was a millionaire, the MSM would probably say that Bush was responsible for every disease that afflicts mankind. That's the nature of the liberal beast called the MSM.
This next 4 years is going to be real interesting. I'll leave it at that.

Losers
January 16, 2009 - 15:59 ET by jdubyaEventually idiots like Maddow will fade away. Even the most leftist liberal's point of view will change when they find that they will have to wait in a line to get a cup of Obamacoffee, after they get poked, prodded, and screened to ensure that they are not carrying a bomb of sorts all because we wanted to get soft on terrorism. Of course, by this time, the Obamahouse will be out in the boonies since the cities or urban-zones have been destroyed by chemical/biological attacks.

Shameful. Indeed.
Katrina AGAIN?
January 17, 2009 - 02:42 ET by JWFYes, President Bush failed. He failed to defend himself against the likes of this nut.
The very nature of a disaster, a disaster that prevents it's victims from escaping, from going OUT, also prevents help from getting IN.
The roads into the city of New Orleans were either collapsed or flooded. Nevertheless, an unprecedented number of rescuers reached the city in RECORD time.
Outside of the casualties from the inital hurricane and the following flood, NO ONE died of thirst, hunger or disease.
Everyone had 5 days to stock up on water, canned food, and batteries for portable radios. The water only got waist deep. So unless you were old, infirmed, or a midget, life got tough but not deadly.
Here is my suggestion for the next natural disaster that no one could accurately predict. Let's build a desalination plant and collect all the tears of the liberal whiny journalists and send the millions of gallons of the newly filtered water to the victims.
Sincerely,
a Veteran of dozens of typhoons and one 8.0 earthquake.

January 17, 2009 - 02:45 ET by RR GOPI guess Mayor Nagin never heard of Hurricane Andrew...or Camille, or Hugo...
I was appalled when I saw all those people being hearded into the Superdome and was thinking, "Uh, isn't that like cloth covering that thing? That doesn't look like a good idea." Talked to a friend that day who was watching and said, "They're so f---ed" over and over again.
Where were the warnings from the all-knowing MSM and the Democrats when that was going on? Oh, but you don't tell a BMIC what the hell to do, do we now. Besides, they were just as clueless.
