The Internet is abuzz Monday morning over the excessive vulgarity at Sunday's Golden Globes.
From middle-fingers to testicular and homosexual references, Hollywood's annual lovefest was almost as bad as accidentally entering the comments section at a liberal blog.
Almost.
As the Los Angeles Times' Rachel Abramowitz reported, the lowlight was Mickey Rourke who gave one of the "most profane acceptance speeches in recent history" (video embedded below the fold, obvious vulgarity alert, photo courtesy AP):
The Golden Globes are supposed to be loose, but so loose that it could spur FCC sanctions? The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. can thank newly minted Globes winner Mickey Rourke for one of its most profane acceptance speeches in recent history -- highlighted by frequent use of the word "balls" as a compliment. Then, as he teased Darren Aronofsky about being smarter than everyone in the room, except maybe for Steven Spielberg, "The Wrestler" director shot back a friendly flipping of the bird. And, oh, yes, "Slumdog Millionaire" producer Christian Colson -- who accepted for film drama, closed out the evening with an expletive as he realized he was out of time for his speech. [...]
Presenter Ricky Gervais complained: "I can't believe I'm not nominated. What a waste of a campaign. Today is the last time I have sex with 200 middle-age journalists. It was horrible. Really. A lot of them didn't even speak English. Europeans with wispy beards. The men were worse."
By contrast, Tina Fey, upon winning actress in a TV comedy series, noted that if ever one begins to feel "too good about yourself, they have this thing called the Internet, and you can find a lot of people there who don't like you. I'd like to address some of them now. BabsonLaCrosse, you can suck it."
Such classy people, and such a fine way to spend a Sunday evening with the family, dontcha think?

When it is broadcast across the world, at an event that was once considered family friendly, then it is another. Why justify their bad behavior? Should we award them by spending money on their flicks that are usually profane, show Americans as horrible people, should we watch them get their awards and be happy for them? You may, most of us will pass.

January 12, 2009 - 12:14 ET by bioteachedOkay, so it is not news anymore because it is behavior that we have come to expect from Hollywood liberals. I guess that means that it is no longer news when a terrorist group blows up a building or commits any other egregious act of terror. Or that it is no longer news if a Neo-nazi group commits a heinous act of racism. The list can go on, and on . . .
By your logic, we are supposed to speak out against immoral or illegal behavior only once, then we are to move on. I sure am glad that was not the case when it comes to the civil rights movement.

January 12, 2009 - 14:54 ET by JasonCI suppose there are a few filmmakers and actors who like to think of their work as being more than a bland, interchangeable, escapist commodity, and actually try to convey their convictions and beliefs through that work, even if it means sacrificing Titanic-esque profits.
It always bums me out when people complain about how there are no good movies these days (except for American Carol, which only failed to make zillions because of those dastardly ticketsellers misrepresnting its sales); outside of the usual Hollywood dreck that gets promoted on the late-night talk shows and plays at the megaplexes, we are, in my opinion, currently experiencing a veritable renaissance of outstanding cinema.
As for the rest...well, regardless of their politics, most of them aren't hurting that much for cash, I don't think.

We figured that, like Hollywood, the best way to promote ourselves is to give ourselves awards. Now we can tell our clients that our office is loaded with award-winning, all-star lineup. (That they have to pay extra for, but after all, we won awards ... )
And if anyone didn't win an award at this ceremony, like me, don't worry! We have eleven more award ceremonies to go. As my coworkers said to me, with so many ceremonies, you'd have to be a real loser not to score an award.

Watch this video (there's no profanity) and tell me rapping doesn't require any talent. This ain't "She sells seashells by the seashore..." http://www.youtube.c...
As for repetition, unless all you like to listen to is classical and jazz, that's a silly statement. Pretty much any popular song you've ever heard (going back to the 20s) is based on a repetitive structure. Most such songs have an average of 4 different chords, generally arranged in identical I-vi-IV-V progressions. Doesn't matter if we're talking about Sinatra, The Beatles, or Michael Jackson. All rap does is translate these repetitive structures to the register of beat and meter rather than melody. So yeah, I guess that makes them a blight on society...

Look, I'm not knocking Mozart, obviously he was a genius, I just think it's silly to act like rap is such an inherently horrible thing. It's a knee-jerk liberal reaction (remember who chaired the PMRC, after all) and is almost always advanced by people who think the music begins and ends with Snoop Dogg.

January 13, 2009 - 19:18 ET by UndercoverConservativeif i count the hours of exposure I get thumping from the backs of cars in my neighborhood?
Seriously, I can count the word "n*gger" and "b*tch' repeated (at least one of these, if not both, or a derivative "ho") between three to five times before the vehicle is out of earshot. Out of a hundred cars or so that pass by out busy "high density" apartment area in a nice spring day, at least 30 will have some sort of machine bass tone neutral song playing at volumes loud enough to be heard a minimum of 200 feet.
Of those, on average, fuly half will repeatedly blare "b*tch", f*ck", "ho", and/or "n*gger" a minimum of three times, depending on speed as the vehicle passes. Of the remainder, many are in Spanish so it's hard to tell.
is all "rap" obscene? maybe not-but the "popular" stuff is. And none of these thugs (yes, I've witnessed their arrests and Sureno/Norteno tagging as well as unauthorized narcotic trade activities so 'thug" is not some racial profiling) are cranking Mozart, Beatles, Hanna Montana, polka, or actual R&B as they roll.
basically, it's like saying that not all folks who listen to hardcore thrash metal are skaters, not all bald headed white kids who listen to Kid Rock are neo nazis, but when you see bald white kids grinding rails listening to speed metal while displaying swastikas in their deck art, you don't need a degree to tell what's up.

January 13, 2009 - 12:33 ET by BosTarusIt just strikes me as a continuation of a cycle... ever since there was media created to appeal to younger and/or poorer audiences... there has always been an older generation to cry foul. It started with Dickens' serialized novels, went on to paper backs, dime novels, the pulps, comics, movies, rock and roll, television, cartoons, hip-hop, video games, the internet... Hell, even Goya's "Los Caprichos" print series got a similar treatment from the "classy" older generation. Its always been silly to pin society's failings on the art forms of the day... and the world isn't on some constant downward spiral... just the tastes are always changing. I'm sure when my generation is of age, we'll find something contemptuous about our children's art form.

Breaking Your Balls Is Vulgar?
January 12, 2009 - 23:53 ET by The7SticksGeesh, "you're breaking my balls around here", as Cartman would say. I could not see one thing wrong about the Golden Globes last night, other than the fact that it was fairly biased in the acting categories for TV miniseries, which they gave to Laura Dern for portraying Katherine Harris in that Recount miniseries (I forget the man who won for Recount, but he won for Recount, so there was some liberal bias there.)
I'm not convinced that Hollywood is really as hateful to America and its allies as you claim it is. Let me give you an example: Waltz With Bashir was the Israeli animated docudrama that won for best foreign language film. An Israeli film, I must emphasize. Awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press (the "foreign" in that title should be an indicator as to what kind of association that is.) Yes, I know that Israeli cinema tends to be far more leftwing compared to the rest of Israel, but do you know how much this means to a country that is trying to defend itself from the Islamo-Nazis of the Hamas terrorist brigade? It seems to me a step in the right direction.
And what's so bad about Mickey Rourke? My roommate knew Mickey Rourke and has a print of him hanging on the wall. He deserved that Golden Globe for The Wrestler and he also deserves the Oscar for best actor. Oh, and I loved the tribute to Steven Spielberg (a hero of mine for his work in filmmaking and the cause of the Jewish people.)
I was disappointed that Peter Gabriel didn't win for best original song, though, that was the one lowlight for me to watch.

January 13, 2009 - 00:03 ET by thebutlerdiditIf you read what was posted by me and several others, such as Blonde and BT, it is not that the language is vulgar, most of us have said much worse. It is the setting. It used to be that award shows were considered a "family event" and were when stars were on their best behavior. In the old days, most were the epitome of class. This is shown world-wide. It is embarassing that something that is supposed to show how classy we are as a country, yes, it is a symbol, makes us look bad. It is the whole trashing up of society. When did it become o.k. for kids to say FU to adults? If you watch a supposed family show now, the kids are know-it-alls, who have horrible behaviors, and smart off to their parents. If you think this is a good idea to show your kids, then fine, most people don't want this as their kid's influence. It is the whole of the trash, not just the sum of its parts.

Know The Movies And The Players
January 13, 2009 - 17:39 ET by stratman1) The Foreign Press voted on nominees long before the current Gaza battle. That there wasn't a Hamas propaganda film is not the voters fault. If only the terrorist thugs of The Baader Meinhof Complex were portrayed as heroes like Che and Castro, then the Foreign Press would have choosen it as winner.
2) Waltz With Bashir is an anti-war movie, which the Foreign Press loves. That it is an Israel anti-Israeli War movie is the icing on the cake for the Foreign Press.
3) Having cartoon sequences in the movie makes it pretty much irresistable as well for those illiterate literati.
4) Mickey Rourke was, and may still be, a scumbag. I did like his comment about his dogs, though. How endearing his boss giving him the finger at the event, made more touching as it was on camera. Oddly, Rourke was the better man between the two.
5) All those presenters "shushing" the crowd displayed their arrogance and inconsequential standing in the human race. Why should anyone listen to them?
6) The inebrieted crowd was typical for the self-absorbed Hollyweird crowd. Why should anyone listen to them either.
7) The HBO miniseries John Adams deserved every single award it received.
Disregarding your other points...
January 13, 2009 - 18:04 ET by BosTarusI take exception to #3 on your list. Why assume that animation is only for the illiterate? It only reveals yourself to be ill informed on the subject. Animation has long since been utilized for adult fare rather than just Disney movies and Hanna Barbera cartoons. And even the finest Children's animation has a quality worth recognizing- Wall-E was an amazing movie, even though it was intended for children. You're writing off an entire medium-it'd be like saying tv is only for senile old people, or music is only for women. Anyway, as a huge fan of animation, I felt that was unnecessary.
You misunderstand my
January 13, 2009 - 18:49 ET by stratmanYou misunderstand my point.
My comment was not a broad-brushstroke against animation in general, it was a broad-brushstroke against the Foreign Press using the more pejorative term of "cartoon" to denote the FP's political correct palate of today as ill-refined and anti-intellectual.
Even you refer to the medium as animation, not as "cartoon". I presumed the latter is not as decorous as the former, and, some crap animation can be properly referred to as a cartoon. Hence my use of the term.
Nearly my entire diatribe was a derision of the Foreign Press and the bubble boys and girls of Hollyweird. I was not denigrating motion pictures, including animations, in general nor in the specific.
Looking at your previous postings I can see you are drawn to threads dealing with animations/graphics. I hope you now more fully understand what I was trying to convey and that it was not to be at your expense.
