I LOVE this video!!!! What a treat!
January 1, 2009 - 19:03 ET by PrairieSkyI live in North Dakota, and this video could have been shot here. Living in a northern latitude, you really get the chance to see and to appreciate the change of seasons...the changes from one season to another are often so stark, unmistakable and so very lovely.
Mr. Solheim's video captures this all so wonderfully!
Didn't God give us such a beautiful world??
What a treat this piece is! Thanks NB for posting this!!!!

I'm dreaming of a green July
January 1, 2009 - 23:02 ET by dboTwo awesome videos Noel and bt. I took the liberty to pause the 4 seasons video at the 25 second mark to enjoy a bit of summer since we're having the most ridiculous winter ever here in the pacific NW.

I've never seen anything
January 2, 2009 - 00:32 ET by dboI've never seen anything like this. Sometimes I think I woke up from a bad nightmare and I now live in Winterpeg. I'm on the coast and it's usually comparatively mild here but not this year. Last spring we had snow in April for only the second time in my life. We just had our coldest recorded temperature in 39 years (5F) about 10 days ago. We were just 1/4 inch short of a new snowfall record (1965) this December. To add insult to injury my local area introduced a new carbon tax last July.

You know my hearts with you...this has been something else, it's not done yet, from what I've seen, not by a long shot.

Loved It
January 2, 2009 - 00:49 ET by Copperhead RidgeMy children and I sometimes lay on the ground on the back part of our property and watch the stars. If we can stand the cold, we can sort of see the Milky Way, but the Southern climate and ambient light from a nearby small city keeps us from seeing it unless it is brutally cold.
Two nights I can remember well. I can't remember the year, but we were treated to the Aurora Borealis at this latitude on three consecutive spring nights. It was warm enough to sit in our lawn chairs in the backyard and watch the lights. Beautiful. My daughter was about two years old, and she noticed them, too.
A couple of years ago, we camped for several nights in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We could see the Milky Way so easily. I laid down outside the tent and watched the galaxy turn over my head. It was so clear that I could spot satellites going overhead. The ISS was easily visible. Those were great nights.
In 1978, Kentucky had one of the worst winters on record. I was 11 years old. I had lived in the South all my life, so I had never seen the aurora borealis. My friends and I were out sledding one night and we saw the aurora. It scared the pee out of us. My father calmed our fears and explained to us what it was.
I love stuff like that.
CR
January 2, 2009 - 00:52 ET by Noel SheppardCR,
Me too. Especially in the winter.
What folks don't realize is the best skies are winter skies, because that's when the planets are most visible. That crescent moon a month ago with Venus and Jupiter to the left was astounding. And, a couple of nights ago, there was another crescent moon with just Venus to the left. In our western sky (Northern Cal), it was beautiful.
I love winter sky-watching where I live. Gives you a sense of perspective. :-) ns
Hey CR... You aren't
January 2, 2009 - 01:03 ET by bigtimerHey CR...
You aren't alone, one night late when my husband and I were coming back from Anchorage to Seward the Northern Lights were just glowing, shining, whatever you want to call it on the snow-capped magnificent mountains (and they are there) we stopped the car, got out, cold as it was and just ewwwwed and ahhhhed forever it seemed like, when he worked up on the North Slope, when it was just beginning years and years ago now the descriptions he would tell me were mouth watering...so I felt lucky to be as close as I was to them in Ak. that night.
Awesome was and is the word...forever etched in my memory.

Thanks
January 2, 2009 - 03:40 ET by NorthCoasterThanks for the videos and commentery. Some of my most memorable experiences are related to enjoying the night sky. When I was young, my family spent a lot of time on an island in Lake Erie. Because we were on the water and far away from the city, the sunsets were spectacular and the night sky was awsome. We saw and heard the Aurora Borealis many times during those years. If you haven't heard the Aurora, it sounds like starched sheets rustling against themselves.
My most memorable experience took place during a Persaides meteor shower at 4 in the morning. My youngest brother was helping me deliver papers and we were cutting across a neighbors fence to get to the drop off spot for the bundle of papers. As we got to the top of the fence we were suddenly silohetted against the ground by the explosion of meteors overhead. We were startled by the brilliance and explosion of light. We still recall that experience fondly 40 years later.
