Here's an announcement that will please atheists and climate alarmists alike: Christmas lights are bad for the planet because they cause global warming.
So says the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia's national science agency.
Bah humbug, I kid you not.
As reported by the Courier and Mail this Christmas Eve:
SCIENTISTS have warned that Christmas lights are bad for the planet due to huge electricity waste and urged people to get energy efficient festive bulbs.
CSIRO researchers said householders should know that each bulb turned on in the name of Christmas will increase emissions of greenhouse gases.
Dr Glenn Platt, who leads research on energy demand, said Australia got 80 per cent of its electricity by burning coal which pumps harmful emissions into the atmosphere. [...]
Dr Platt added: "For a zero-emission Christmas light show, you may consider using solar powered lights or sourcing your electricity from verified green power suppliers."
As it's too late for most readers to comply with CSIRO's wishes this holiday season, maybe you should return all of the gifts you've purchased for your loved ones and buy carbon credits to offset what's indirectly emanating from your Christmas lights.
Think of it this way: you wouldn't just be saving the planet; you'd be giving Nobel Laureate Al Gore the best possible present for he's taken quite a beating on his green investments this year.
Merry Christmas.

Can't we just kill them?
December 24, 2008 - 10:46 ET by Lord ErondHoly God, I mean what the hell. It's one thing to have an opinion, but when you are out there fomenting panic the way these lefty morons are, I say *BAM*. Free speech does not give you the right to yell FIRE in a crowded movie theatre.

Tell you what. Why don't you clean up your speech first?
December 24, 2008 - 10:56 ET by Mike BrattonOr is murder preferable to debate?
Free speech doesn't give you the right to wish for the deaths of people with whom you disagree.
Your remarks are out of line. Please clean them up, or else delete them.

December 24, 2008 - 14:17 ET by cassratI'm sorry Mikey. 'Wishing for the deaths of people with whom you disagree' is not a FREE SPEECH issue. A person can wish for anything and it is NO ONEs business.
I can wish that ALL Liberal maroons would jump off a bridge (not the Golden Gate) and that wish would be no one elses business. If I were begin pushing them off then someone else might have something to say about it.
I think YOUR remarks are out of line since you are trying to stiffle someone elses freedom of speech (hey now i'm out of line LOL).
Oh and YES, killing (not always murder, some people deserve it) is preferable to ddebate in most cases.

It Had to Happen
December 24, 2008 - 10:54 ET by Kirk TurnerI could have predicted this years ago. This is the logical progession of ideas that only emerge occasionally from a echo chamber. When they do, they sound oddly incoherent and backward to those of us not encApsulated in their chamber.
The only way ideas like this can mean anything is when it is taken seriously by us. I suggest rejecting it as the ideological trash it is--just another attack aginst Christians.
Stop everything!
December 24, 2008 - 11:02 ET by ForeverOnTheRightEverything we do causes global warming. Let's stop everything we do for the sake of mother earth! In fact it is man's obligation to commit suicide so that man will not harm Mother Earth. Oh wait decomposing bodies will cause global warming, d#m.<sarc off>
This global warming alarmism is getting to be as bad as the "blame Bush for everything" syndrome.
Exactly!
December 25, 2008 - 10:36 ET by Hardknox503Since Gore and his minions believe wholeheartedly that CO2, which we all exhale, is a Greenhouse gas thats damaging the planet, I suggest that all the greens/environmentalists actually put their money where their mouths are for once and commit mass suicide. This will put a huge dent in carbon emissions world wide, since Gore and his followers actually exhale more CO2 than an average person due to their constant yammering away on all things "green".
Of course, none of these hypocrites would ever dream of that. They believe their lives are actually more precious than the aerage human because its their duty to raise "awareness" of global warming and they couldn't do that if they were dead, now could they?

There is no end to the
December 24, 2008 - 11:44 ET by R D HelmThere is no end to the lunacy that the Christmas-haters will come up with to try and make all of us feel guilty in some way for trying to enjoy the season.
Next they'll be bitching about all the trees that were cut down to make all the wrapping paper, gift boxes and shopping bags.
They are already moaning about all the cars idling in traffic around shopping malls.
Then it will be that the glass used to make tree ornaments is a waste of energy and sand.
Then it will be the gasoline-powered grinders that are used to mulch Christmas trees when its all over for contributing to pollution.
Then, they'll suggest everybody buy an artificial tree for next year, then turn around and gripe about the amount of plastic used to manufacture same.
Oh, and lets not forget all the precious landfill space all the wrapping paper, gift boxes, etc., is going to take up when it is unceremoniously thrown away by us overly-consumerized, excessive-consumption type people.
Let's face it, these people are liberals, which means by and large they are wretchedly miserable, self-loathing types who never have any fun, and hate anyone who does.
I think they should just be ignored.
You know, I think that next year I am going to add about 2500 lights to my outdoor display, if for no other reason than to cheese-off the Australian climate-weenies, as I am sure they will be able to pick out my house in a nocturnal satellite photo. :-)

Lighten Up

Then in the new year perhaps they could explain to me how having one extra molecule of co2 for every 10,000 molecules in the atmosphere causes global warming.

December 24, 2008 - 12:34 ET by wiwfSo then that means if just ONE eco-moron actually doesn't put up lights, he'll be saving the planet for all of us, right? If the number of people that put up lights is constant from year to year, then one person not putting up lights for a year is emitting less carbon for the world on a whole, and thus is saving the planet from a Gorey ending.

December 24, 2008 - 14:56 ET by ChadLiberal myth 257,189...
Incandescent bulbs are inefficient.
Fact: They can be inefficient in when comparing power in to light out. But where does that excess power go? HEAT! So anytime of the year you may be heating your home, an incandescent bulb is 100% efficient! For every BTU of heat they output, is a BTU of heat your furnace does not have to provide. :-)
Related facts: LED's are not going to be replacing conventional lighting anytime soon. They are great where compactness is a must, like a flashlight (I have several small flashlights that are amazingly bright and run for several hours at full brightness). However, they have a long way to go to beat the efficiency of fluorescent and particularly low pressure sodium bulbs. Even today's latest Cree XR-E BIN's are only half to one quarter as efficient as the marketing material states when driven to acceptable output levels (150+ lumens) and in colors that are pleasing indoors (warm white).
CFL's contain mercury, are slow to warm up, are even slower to warm up when they are cold, performance and lifespan can be greatly affected by switching on and off, hard to dim, and are offer only slightly more efficiency; somewhere between a halogen incandescent and a full size fluorescent.

Another "greenwash"
December 24, 2008 - 15:33 ET by BrauYears ago, when an Xmas light burned out, you'd just screw in another. Today's "green" LED strings require the whole string to be replaced each time a light or two dies. I bought 10 sets (because I really like the bright colors) but within two years all died and had to be returned. The replacement sets died within two seasons as well. That's way more garbage in a few years than in a lifetime of using incandescent bulbs ... but apparently that's just a-okay with the eco-religious.
To me it's just another example of greenwashing while ignoring blatant consumerism. I really wish they'd require the makers to provide screw-in LED bulbs that work with the OLD strings.

December 25, 2008 - 03:10 ET by JWFIt requires ZERO energy to produce those solar panels!
Do you want to run your lights during the day when there is solar power or at night? You need rechargeable batteries for that.
It requires ZERO energy to produce a rechargeable battery! And they last forever! No need to replace them once a year or so and throw away the old ones in that landfill you also hate.
