Air America Founder Agrees With Rush on Fairness Doctrine

You want to talk about politics making strange bedfellows, the founder of the liberal talk radio station Air America actually agrees with Rush Limbaugh's view of the Fairness Doctrine.

Not only that, Jon Sinden even had an op-ed published in Monday's Wall Street Journal saying so.

I kid you not.

UPDATE: Readers are advised that Sinden is no longer affiliated with Air America, and that current management does support a reenactment of the Fairness Doctrine.

In a piece entitled "Limbaugh Is Right on the Fairness Doctrine," with the delicious sub-headline "Liberals don't need equal-time rules to compete," Sinden espoused views most Air America listeners are sure to disagree with (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Conservative talk radio has worked itself into a tizzy lately over the rumored revival of the Fairness Doctrine -- the FCC policy that sought to enforce balanced discussion on the nation's airwaves.

As the founding president of Air America Radio, I believe that for the last eight years Rush Limbaugh and his ilk have been cheerleaders for everything wrong with our economic, foreign and domestic policies. But when it comes to the Fairness Doctrine, I couldn't agree with them more. The Fairness Doctrine is an anachronistic policy that, with the abundance of choices on radio today, is entirely unnecessary. [...]

The conventional wisdom is that Rush's success depended on the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. Some say that if he had to make time for opposing opinions, Rush would have flopped. Personally, I think he is most entertaining when he is dismantling opposing arguments. He's successful because he is a superior entertainer.

Rush created the new AM template, and it spread like wildfire. When programmers and sales managers get a whiff of success, it is cloned in every conceivable way until the audience, once grateful for innovation, tunes out.

So why didn't liberal talk radio flourish as well? [...]

First, boring hosts made the occasional, unsuccessful foray (sorry, Mario Cuomo). Second, some talented lefties like Mike Malloy were cast into the abyss of right-wing talk radio where they were completely out of place. [...]

Finally, most broadcast owners are conservative. Programs like Rush's have made them rich, so the last thing they want is to mess with success, particularly if it entails airing opinions they don't share. [...]

When we founded Air America, we aimed to establish a talk network that lived at the intersection of politics and entertainment. Of course, we were motivated by our political leanings. But as a lifelong broadcaster, I was certain that at least half the American audience was underserved by conservative talk radio. Here was an opportunity to capture listeners turned off by the likes of, say, Sean Hannity. The business opportunity was enticing.

It never occurred to me to argue for reimposing the Fairness Doctrine. Instead, I sought to capitalize on the other side of a market the right already had built.

Wouldn't it be nice if more liberals felt this way?

Bravo, Jon. You've got a lot of nerve to write this piece.

Capitalize?  Isn't that a bad word in the leftie dictionary?

Capitalize, not exactly.....

I think what the dude meant to say was 'liberals are entitled to the other half' of the American radio audience.

Apparently, liberals out there don't appreciate the fact that Air America is entitled to have them as listeners.

Blow Me Down!

While this is certainly refreshing, I don't expect it to have much effect on the tidal wave of fascism that is headed our way.  My mother who is 88 and a Roosevelt democrat of the depression era just could not believe it when I told her Obama's mother was a communist sympathizer, that the high school he went to was sympathetic to communist teachings and that his mentor was a real card carrying communist.  My mother and several of my extended family think I'm nuts because I think Bush is an honorable man and does not lie.  They all also think Rush should be banned even though they have never listened to him for more that a few minutes except by accident.  They just believe what they are told by their news readers and politicos.

Off topic, the sun is still blank.  Lots of blank days lately.

So true.  A leftist in favor of free market competition? It's a good thing his compatriots are the "tolerant" ones when it comes to ideas; otherwise  he would be shunned.

I would think this is

I would think this is nothing more than sucker bait: Air America is fully behind bringing back these awful rules.

Just like Obama and the Rick Warren thing, lefties are quite adept at throwing curve balls to point people away from their real intentions.

If the Democrats want to

If the Democrats want to guarantee that they'll lose the House in two years, they should pass the so-called Fairness Doctrine.

It wouldn't just be Rush fans up in arms, but also fans of Hannity, Beck, Boortz, Savage, etc. Talk about mobilizing the conservative-libertarian forces!

House not Needed

The real problem for talk radio and the rest is that it probably won't get done by congress but by bureaucratic fiat.  It will then have to wind its way via lawsuit, through the courts up to the by that time liberal packed SCOTUS.  I hope I'm wrong.

Right on

Jon Sinden! Even though liberals in the MSM and politics continue their full frontal assault on conservative talk radio, BHO was still elected. I am convinced skin color was the number one reason why people voted for him, politics second. Whoever voted for him based on his political views/lies found their info somewhere or just bought into the "I'm gonna save the world" BS. Then there are your typical left-wing wackos.

Couldn't agree more.  I

Couldn't agree more.  I was talking to my brother who voted for Hussein, and he honestly thought the guy is a centrist.  He commented that Hussein's, "certainly not as liberal as Ted Kennedy."  I asked him to check out the voting records and see that he'd been fooled by the press.  He said he would--it remains to be seen whether he does.

AM Radio?!?

It still exists?!?

Who listens to the Radio, anyways????

Too many choices in today's world. I thought the Fairness Doctrine was about the internet blogs, being able to say what you wanted without any worry of rebuttal is what the Doctrine wants to destroy, correct?

Translation?

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate." -D.Alighieri

Translation please?  I read "The Divine Comedy" many years ago and found it fascinating.  I've not thought about it in years, though and probably don't recall much of it.  I had to think for a few minutes about "D." Alighieri- "D."..."D."..."D."...oh yeah!, Dante!  Just trying to say, I'm not trying to be some literary light here.  But I am curious about the translation.

I wonder of it is an attempt to attract some listeners - any listeners, even if they are conservative ones - by saying something "Right-ish". They are obviously not attracting Liberal listeners, so what difference does it make to their "listener market share"?

I think your right on that

I think your right on that AF, they figure if they mention Rush's name that folks will flock on over to their part of the dial temporarily inflating their audience.

More audience means more ad money.

Pure capitalism, oops, that's a dirty word for a lib.

That's one more Liberal who

That's one more Liberal who is forced by the facts to admit Rush is Right....they do this alot (after elections)...

Well, this brightened up my

Well, this brightened up my day somewhat...maybe there is some hope yet...for no change.

We shall see.

GET MORE SPONSOR,S??.

CHARLIE The looney is correct and from what i,see is the fairness doctrine would effect the, pbs commies and politically correct crowd. As for LImbaugh HE WOULD ONLY BE HURTING WITH LESS TIME FOR, commercial,s!!.

Great insight Jon

If you had hired hosts that talked about issues instead of ranted stupidly, Air America might still be functioning today. Then again with the largely conservative audience outside of New York City, maybe not.

Could it be...

Could it be Sinden doesn't want to share equal time with Republican ideas on his own radio station?

Those who have not swords can still die upon them.

No, it's more likely that

No, it's more likely that he's at least familiar with the concept of "markets".  Limbaugh achieved success because he realized that the absence of conservative opinion in media was a void that could be profitable to fill.  Having seen conservatives dominate the talk radio format, Sinden knows that there is a market of liberals, which, if properly tapped, can generate revenues.  He realizes, though, that no liberal has, so far, been talented enough to fill the void.
