Military Report Questioning Global Warming Frightens Alarmists

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

If you needed any more proof climate alarmists are an extraordinarily deluded bunch that will do anything to protect their dogma, you got it Saturday when a 56-page report on military strategy incited ire because it included two paragraphs on global warming that don't perfectly fit Nobel Laureate Al Gore's agenda.

In fact, all the brouhaha was largely about one sentence: "In many respects, scientific conclusions about the causes and potential effects of global warming are contradictory."

Seems innocent enough, don't you think?

Well, not according to the Boston Globe's Bryan Bender, or any of the folks he chose to question about it:

A new US military report has come under scrutiny for asserting that the scientific data on what is causing global warming is "contradictory" - a position one leading specialist said indicates the government still hasn't fully embraced the urgency of climate change. [...]

But a section of the 56-page report on climate change and natural disasters prompted criticism yesterday from some leading specialists who said that spreading the inaccurate perception that the causes of climate change remain an open question could result in government agencies not taking the issue seriously enough.

The report, titled Joint Operating Environment 2008, states that "the impact of global warming and its potential to cause natural disasters and other harmful phenomena such as rising sea levels has become a prominent - and controversial - national and international concern. Some argue that there will be more and greater storms and natural disasters, others that there will be fewer."

It adds: "In many respects, scientific conclusions about the causes and potential effects of global warming are contradictory."

That last line in particular was singled out at a panel discussion hosted yesterday by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, on the topic of climate change and national security.

Those interested can watch a video of this hilarious discussion here (h/t American Thinker's Marc Sheppard).

Sadly, the Globe chose only to get the opinion of alarmists:

Sharon Burke, a former Pentagon and State Department official who is now a specialist at the Center for a New American Security, said the report was factually "wrong" and "out of line," saying that there is a wide consensus that human activity, namely the production of greenhouse gases, is responsible for global warming.

Other specialists had similar reactions when they read the report.

"It's very wrong," said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology whose work was cited in the military report. "The jury is not out" on what is causing global warming, he added. "I don't know where that statement came from, but it's pretty bizarre."

Emanuel also took issue with the report's assertions about future storm intensity.

"Everyone pretty much agrees that the intensity of events could go up with global warming, although we argue how much," he said in an interview.

Well, actually, not everyone agrees with this. Not even close.

In fact, there's now over 31,000 scientists that have signed a petition questioning man's role in global warming. Unfortunately, Bender chose not to cite any of these folks.

I wonder why.

Yet, maybe more comical was how the much larger section of this report that involved the military's view of energy production went totally ignored:

To meet even the conservative growth rates posited above, global energy production would need to rise by 1.3% per year. By the 2030s, demand would be nearly 50% greater than today. To meet that demand, even assuming more effective conservation measures, the world would need to add roughly the equivalent of Saudi Arabia's current energy production very seven years. [...]

By the 2030s, oil requirements could go from 86 to 118 million barrels a day (MBD). Although the use of coal may decline in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, it will more than double in developing nations. Fossil fuels will still make up 80% of the energy mix in the 2030s, with oil and gas comprising upwards of 60%. The central problem for the coming decade will not be a lack of petroleum reserves, but rather a shortage of drilling platforms, engineers and refining capacity. Even were a concerted effort begun today to repair that shortage, it would be ten years before production could catch up with expected demand. The key determinant here would be the degree of commitment the United States and others would display in addressing the dangerous vulnerabilities the growing energy crisis presents. [...]

None of the above provides much reason for optimism. At present, the United States possesses approximately 250 million cars, while China with its immensely larger population possesses only 40 million. The Chinese are laying down approximately 1,000 kilometers of four-lane highway every year, a figure suggesting how many more vehicles they expect to possess, with the concomitant rise in their demand for oil. The presence of Chinese "civilians" in the Sudan to guard oil pipelines underlines China's concern for protecting its oil supplies and could preview a future in which other states intervene in Africa to protect scarce resources.

The implications for future conflict are ominous. If the major developed and developing states do not undertake a massive expansion of production and refining capabilities, a severe energy crunch is inevitable. While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political, and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce, it surely would reduce the prospects for growth in both the developing and developed worlds. Such an economic slowdown would exacerbate other unresolved tensions, push fragile and failing states further down the path toward collapse, and perhaps have serious economic impact on both China and India. At best, it would lead to periods of harsh economic adjustment. To what extent conservation measures, investments in alternative energy production, and efforts to expand petroleum production from tar sands and shale would mitigate such a period of adjustment is difficult to predict. One should not forget that the Great Depression spawned a number of ferocious totalitarian regimes that sought economic prosperity for their nations by ruthless conquest, while Japan went to war in 1941 to secure its energy supplies.

One other potential effect of an energy crunch could be a prolonged U.S. recession which could lead to deep cuts in defense spending (as happened during the Great Depression). Joint force commanders could then find their capabilities diminished at the moment they may have to undertake increasingly dangerous missions. Should that happen, adaptability would require more than preparations to fight the enemies of the United States, but also the willingness to recognize and acknowledge the limitations of America's military forces. The pooling of U.S. resources and capabilities with allies would then become even more critical. Coalition operations would become essential to protecting national interests.

So, the U.S. military believes that the expansion of oil exploration, drilling, and refining, as well as the additional production of coal and natural gas, are essential to protecting our national security interests.

Yet, the Globe completely ignored this revelation and preferred instead to focus on one sentence in this 56-page strategy analysis which said "scientific conclusions about the causes and potential effects of global warming are contradictory."

Anybody smell some hypocrisy?

After all, the key to this absurd myth is that carbon dioxide is destroying the planet. Therefore, our salvation supposedly depends on the immediate reduction in the burning of fossil fuels. However, the military views a dramatic expansion in the production of such fuels is essential to national security.

Though Burke did mention this point at Friday's conference, and, of course, disagreed with it, Bender chose not to share it with his readers.

Why? Is protecting the global warming myth more important to Bender than protecting our nation?

Global warming kinda exists with no doubt about it??

The quote below is from Kerry Emanuel, an MIT atmospheric and global alarmist professor taken from the above article. Allow me to highlight what made me LMAO:

"Everyone pretty much agrees that the intensity of events could go up with global warming, although we argue how much," he said in an interview.

Bwahahahahah! And he was arguing that there is no doubt global warming exists!

Just the first page...

...of the report contains the following...

"This document is
speculative in nature and does not suppose to predict what will happen in the next
twenty-five years. Rather, it is intended to serve as a starting point for discussions
about the future security environment at the operational level of war."

"We encourage criticism of our work."

You state...

"After all, the key to this absurd myth is that carbon dioxide is
destroying the planet. Therefore, our salvation supposedly depends on
the immediate reduction in the burning of fossil fuels. However, the
military views a dramatic expansion in the production of such fuels is
essential to national security.
"

So let the discussions begin...

Question for you...

Do you have any scientific proof from your own scientific background that the current understanding of global climate change is an absurd myth? I thought (and I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise) that the current understanding of climate change has been evolving as better data and tools for retrieving the data have become available. It seems the naysayers are the ones who are looking more like fools as the data and experiments continue to support the scientific theories of climate change. I apologize for the length of my post...this is a discussion board, correct?

What happened to "Global Warming"???

Now it's just climate change, so that if we go back into an ice age like that predicted in the 70's, the church of AGW- strike that- "Climate Change", is ready to make anyone who disagrees a sinner.  Lovely.

If CO2 is destroying the planet, as your above "reasonable" question- " Do you have any scientific proof from your own scientific background that the current understanding of global climate change is an absurd myth?"- seems to imply, why do we not just kill off all living mammals?  Aside from the absurdity of that, don't you guys think the sun has anything to do with this stuff?  There is an approximate 11 year sunspot cycle that occasionally tends to wander off the reservation for a few years at a time, i.e. Maunder & Sporer minimums just to name two.  Also, what about the role of water vapor, a much larger constituent gas in the atmosphere?  And, what about the 30,000 or so scientists that have signed the petition Noel referenced above?  Do they not matter?  Do you think their scientific credentials are discredited because they do not agree with the theory of AGW- oops, I did it again!- Climate change?  They automatically become nincompoops and years of scientific research that questions AGW- Climate Change- is now invalid?  C'mon now.

More:  you might want to check out the current sunspot activity as discussed here and here.  The point is not that we are definitely going into an ice age or a heat age.  Just that the climate changes and has done so for about 4 billion years now.  It will continue to do so, and man will be long gone before it quits changing.  And man can do nothing about it.

Comprehension Skills

I guess you missed the part about the 31,000 scientists, right?

31,000 scientists is NOTHING

I don't care what 31,000 scientists say.  The problem is that they attempt to shout down those who do not agree, and also put their hands over their ears and loudly shout "I can't hear you!!"  For them to be wrong is deadly also;for people to be unprepared for major cooling, which looks like it has been going on since the increased solar output due to sunspots stopped (ignored in models I have seen) will kill people as well.

I remember that the majority of scientists were predicting a new ice age in the 1960's.  And in the 1940's, the "Big Bang" was a derogatory term for a concept of universe creation that has proven to be true http://wiki.answers.....

Science is the formation of hypothesis, testing, and proof of hypothesis.  Global warming forgot to do the last part of this.  The predicted temperature curve is still going up while the world temperature is actually going down.  And my challenge to James Hansen is:  publish your work for peer review, don't hide it and wrap yourself in holiness of saving the planet.

Hansen's model ignores water vapor, yet it is the third highest component of the atmosphere (after nitrogen and oxygen) and is an infrared adsorber.  If hyou were to claim that the hotter world would evaporate more water, then you would wind up with a system where a little warming would cause more evaporation until MAJOR warming would occur above what Hansen and theorists have hypothesized.  Every atom of oil produces the same amount of water as it does carbon dioxide.  So does biomass.  (BTW, coal is the only material which does not).  Would like some explanation of why this is ignored, unless it makes the model results so absurd that no one would believe it.

Finally, tell me how data from a 30-day month were "inadvertantly" substituted for a 31-day month and no one noticed until some "pajama scientist" pointed it out?  From what I read, the Russian data were published properly, just not picked up.  I believe that the current crop of "global warming" scientists are protecting their ox from being gored, and are not being technically honest.  Only a reasoned dialogue will make the difference.

A closing thought:  those of us in the US have seen how we have killed our economy by being stampeded into doing something immediately (the ill-conceived bailout), rather than discussing and evaluating options and then taking action.  Global warming science is trying for the same action, and I fear will have the same result.

"What experience and history teach is
this - that people and governments never have learned anything from history,
or acted on principles deduced from it."

G. W. F. Hegel

Do you have any scientific

Do you have any scientific proof from your own scientific background that the current understanding of global climate change is an absurd myth?

At this time, there is little if any proof that there is any global warming occurring. There is even less proof that human actions are driving forces for global climate changes. Based on these two items, the term absurd myth is fitting.

To date, the only indicators of global warming come from incomplete climate models - incomplete in that they have not yet shown the ability to predict global climate based on historical data. Extrapolation (dubious at best with certain data) based upon such models either produces nonsense or is used to justify preconceived prejudices.

So, in answer to your challenge, I propose to apply Carl Sagan's statement regarding proof - extraordinary claims, such as man-made global warming, require extraordinary evidence. To date, no such evidence has been put forward and we are left with the accurate description of absurb myth.

In Other Words...

GIGO or Garbage In, Garbage Out.

What infuriates me are the things we cannot get the GW alarmists to admit:

  • There is no tested, validated, accepted theory of the climate
  • That researchers and bureaucrats like those who run the IPCC have incentives to perpetuate global warming as a man-made crisis that man can and has to do something about--its called job security
  • Bureaucrats, not climatologists, wrote the most recent IPCC report often cited as providing the so-called proof of anthropogenic global warming
  • That the alarmists will not disavow/disown Al Gore and others for the blatant hypocrisy of their absurdly, disproportionally high carbon emissions while preaching what a crisis global warming is
  • The fact that the climate models being used to "prove" that global warming is a crisis are continually in need of revision because they are failing to correctly predict the recent history of the climate (If the models are so reliable, why are they not predicting correctly what should be the easiest to predict?)
  • Can only 30 years of satellite data be sufficient to completely understand the climate and how it works (To me, 30 years of data is like going to the beach, dipping a glass into the water, looking at the water in the glass, not seeing any fish in the water and concluding there is no life in the ocean.)
  • That there are many highly respected and appropriately knowledgeable researchers who do not see global warming as either man-made or a crisis that man can do anything other than adapt to
  • Cannot identify what "optimal climate" is
  • Cannot identify what an optimal level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is
  • Cannot identify what portion of atmospheric carbon dioxide is attributable solely to man (For that matter, they cannot identify what fraction of atmospheric carbon dioxide is attributable solely to man)
  • If you have consensus, you do not have science

Welcome to the Coelacanth Club!

"i dont need a scientist to tell me about what i can see with my own eyes"

You can't rely on simple, local  observations any more than you can rely upon "scientific consensus."

Remember the Coelacanth?  That was a species of fish that "died off" millions of years ago, only to be found alive and well, just not in an area where the "scientists" expected them to be.  Scientists were sure (a scientific consensus, BTW) that the Coelacanth was extinct simply because no one one in Europe (where the extinction theory originated) ever found any along the shallow seas where the scientists believed the Coelacanth existed millions of years ago.  It wasn't until a scientist "discovered" that fisherman have been eating those fish for thousands of years, but that they were fishing them out of an area, and sea depth, that the scientists didn't believe the fish could survive.  Opps, it looks like the "scientists" didn't actually do their required science, which was actual EXPLORATION of the seas, and they declared the Coelacanth extinct even though those fish thrive today.

In the same respect, how can you claim that the "reefs here dying"and "the fish are scarcer and scarcer" unless you've checked the ENTIRE continental shelf and made sure that they haven't simply migrated somewhere else?  That is, of course, you're actually AWARE that coral, in it's larval stage, can actually SWIM and relocate to a more hospitable environment.  The same is true of fish, they can actually SWIM and relocate themselves to a more hospitable climate.  So, tell me, did you actually check the ENTIRE continental shelve, or are you just relying upon LOCAL observations to make your claims? If you're relying upon LOCAL observations, then you are due congratulations as you've just joined the Coelacanth Club!

 "Do you have any

"Do you have any scientific proof from your own scientific background
that the current understanding of global climate change is an absurd myth?"

Yes.....it's called reality.  That's pretty much all the science background anyone needs.

One former NASA Scientist goes into detail on the myth of Global Warming.

Global warming bologna....

The United States won't have to worry about global warming or global cooling. We are being destroyed from within by a bunch of over educated (aka ignorant) hacks who can't earn a living doing anything other than lying to obtain taxpayer grants. It's all about the dollars to the hacks.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

You said it...

Cut the grant money and everything changes. "Global What?"
Climate change? What's that?

Better yet, propose a huge grant to the Non-AGW believers and see how fast the Chicken Littles switch sides!

Things that make you go Humm.

"prompted criticism yesterday from some leading specialists"

Humm, what do the other "leading specialists" say about it?
I guess we'll never know, if we rely upon the Boston Globe as the sole means of information.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

Co2 increases follow warming, they do not precede same.

Consider, for example, the study of Fischer et al. (1999), who examined trends of atmospheric CO2
and air temperature derived from Antarctic ice core data that extended
back in time a quarter of a million years.  Over this extended period,
the three most dramatic warming events experienced on earth were those
associated with the terminations of the last three ice ages; and for
each of these climatic transitions, earth's air temperature rose well
in advance of any increase in atmospheric CO2.  In fact, the air's CO2 content did not begin to rise until 400 to 1,000 years after the planet began to warm.

There's a little proof for ya there dogboy.

Just one of many studies reaching the same conclusion.  Of course, if ya doan like the message, attack the messenger.  Typical lib tactic.  Regardless...the science is there, like it or not.

Happy Trails...

Short term or long term

CO2 lags behind temperature on a micro-scale (6-9 months) as well.

Ice core records of atmospheric CO2 around the last three glacial terminations
(Science, Vol. 283. no. 5408, pp. 1712 - 1714, 12 March 1999)
- Hubertus Fischer, Martin Wahlen, Jesse Smith, Derek Mastroianni, Bruce Deck

QUOTE

High-resolution records from Antarctic ice cores show that carbon dioxide concentrations increased by 80 to 100 parts per million by volume 600 ±400 years after the warming of the last three deglaciations.

Southern Hemisphere and Deep-Sea Warming Led Deglacial Atmospheric CO2 Rise and Tropical Warming
(Science, September 27, 2007)
- Lowell Stott, Axel Timmermann, Robert Thunell

QUOTE

Deep sea temperatures warmed by ~2C between 19 and 17 ka B.P. (thousand years before present), leading the rise in atmospheric CO2 and tropical surface ocean warming by ~1000 years.

The phase relations among atmospheric CO2 content, temperature and global ice volume over the past 420 ka
(Quaternary Science Reviews, Volume 20, Issue 4, Pages 583-589, February 2001)
- Manfred Mudelsee

QUOTE

Over the full 420 ka of the Vostok record, CO2 variations lag behind atmospheric temperature changes in the Southern Hemisphere by 1.3±1.0 ka

Timing of Atmospheric CO2 and Antarctic Temperature Changes Across Termination III
(Science 14, Vol. 299. no. 5613, March 2003)
- Nicolas Caillon, Jeffrey P. Severinghaus, Jean Jouzel, Jean-Marc Barnola, Jiancheng Kang, Volodya Y. Lipenkov

QUOTE

The sequence of events during Termination III suggests that the CO2 increase lagged Antarctic deglacial warming by 800 ± 200 years and preceded the Northern Hemisphere deglaciation.

Dogboy?

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

four out of five leading alarmists

thought it best to freak out over this information.  The last one... well he just gibbered in the corner and hugged his climate charts.

I do wonder about...

the credibility and education of all the original group of 'scientists' that worked on the IPCC and their political affiliations.

Why haven't all of their credentials been posted? Could this possibly lead to the AGW Chicken Littles changing their minds thus ruining these 'scientists' agenda for mankind?

I remember reading an article not long ago about AGW where the author interviewed a 'scientist' who was a "leading expert on climate change"... who turned out to be a part-time associate professor of sociology in a community college and had not one shred of professional education in atmospherics.

Wilbur

There appear to be many "Scientists" out there with flimsy resumes.

The unfortunate case is that quite a few true Scientists have a stake in CO2 caused Global Warming and they are exceptionally defensive about the subject. Michael Mann, Gavin Schmidt and James Hansen come to mind off the top of my head. If they were truly interested in the science and underlying statisics and facts, they would be more interested in correcting their assumptions and non-standard statistical contortions, than defending them.
