Economic Ignorance: Tucker Blames Financial Crisis On Bush

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

For years NewsBusters and its affiliate the Business & Media Institute have agonized over the astounding economic ignorance of many press members who despite their lack of financial acumen have the gall to offer their unqualified opinions to the public.

No finer example of a media member who should understand her limitations and keep her mouth shut during economic discussions was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Cynthia Tucker Sunday morning who on ABC's "This Week" actually said that all the problems in the financial services industry would have magically disappeared if only the Bush administration would have bailed out individual homeowners.

Maybe more interesting was that she began her nonsensical accusation by saying, "I've never understood." As this was the most accurate statement she made concerning this matter, she should have stopped there.

Sadly, she didn't (video available here, relevant section at 11:33, file photo):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Well, there has been, I think, an ideological barrier in this administration to helping homeowners. I've never understood: if in fact this vast economic crisis started because individual homeowners couldn't pay their mortgages, it seemed to me it would have been cheaper in the beginning to help some of those individual homeowners to pay their mortgages. But this administration, Bush administration, good conservatives, nationalize and bailout the banks, help Wall Street, but for heaven sakes, don't help individual homeowners.

Astounding ignorance.

Sadly, George Stephanopoulos was moderating the panel rather than someone actually knowledgeable on the subject, for the followup question to Tucker should have been, "So what happens to the almost $60 trillion invested in credit default swaps if these homeowners are bailed out?"

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to see Tucker's deer in the headlights expression, wouldn't you?

After all, even the producers and writers of CBS's "60 Minutes" were intelligent enough to understand that the real problem behind this financial crisis is credit default swaps AND NOT John and Jane Q. Public's inability to pay off their mortgage.

Why?

Because if all the problem mortgages were suddenly paid off, all the complex derivatives betting on their default suddenly become worthless, and financial institutions all over the world have to writedown almost $60 trillion.

How do you think that would impact banks, brokerage firms, and insurance companies across the globe, Cynthia?

Furthermore, by doing this, the very entities at the heart of the Ponzi scheme -- those that SOLD the credit default swaps -- would be rewarded, for they wouldn't be required to pay off claims by the buyers.

As such, all those that sold the junk paper at the heart of this crisis would get off Scott Free.

Of course, these homeowners still could have been bailed out, but some mechanism would have needed to be created to establish some value to these derivatives. Alas, that is indeed what Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke are trying to work through.

Regardless, it really is offensive how little so many media members know about this matter, and that it is they who molded public opinion concerning this financial crisis just as the nation was getting ready to elect a new president.

After all, Tucker is the editor of the AJC's opinion section, including the editorial page.

Heaven help us.

Among the dumbest humans I have ever seen attempting to pass themselves off as intelligent.  Of course, since we live in the land of political correctness, we can't say just how stupid she is because that would make us racist.

Well, chalk me up as racist in this case because I am officially pronouncing her a freaking dumbass.  She wouldn't be allowed to clean the toilets at the ACJ if she weren't part of the entitled class.

MSM = PR firm for the Democrat Party

Yep,

we folks in Atlanta just love sharing our favorite print Moonbat, Cynthia Tucker.  She is the Editorial Page Editor for the AJC which, unless something has changed recently, has been losing readership as have most large Left Wing city newspapers.

Sometimes Neal Boortz mixes her up with Cynthia McKinney, though Cynthia Tucker isn't quite that bad.

It seems that Cynthia T. makes a good point about once in a blue moon, but I guess we ain't having a blue moon this month.

Take Ms. Tucker

and multiple her by several million... that explains the 53% who voted for Obama.  They just don't understand.

The worst

Consider yourself lucky if you haven't had much exposure to this moron. She runs our local paper and is an ignorant racist.

Fortunately, her brand of partisan hatrred and hypocrisy is killing the AJC at the fastest rate of all of the "major" papers.

Agreed

She's a Jackson-Sharpton clone.

She'll never indict the likes of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, ACORN, etc. for their roles in the mortgage debacle.  It's better to deflect attention to the lame duck Bush Administration.

And her analysis won't get any deeper than that.

Cynthia Tucker really is astoundingly ignorant. Maybe she should run for congress!

Please, not another Cynthia!

In other words, anybody can say anything about President Bush right now, and their statements will not be challanged by anyone. And all the sheeple are going to believe this hype.

it would have been cheaper in the beginning to help some of those individual homeowners to pay their mortgages

You're right Noel, she should have stopped after "I've never understood" or followed with "so I won't  offer an opinion on that."

She just can't understnad why the government didn't just pay those mortgages????  I guess she thinks there ought to be a "Department of Default" where everyone can go for help if they can't pay their mortgage.  You know, and take out a loan, at no interest, repayable "when things get better."

Astounding ignorance you say?

She thinks she makes perfect sense.  That's what's really scary.

mb

mb,

Well, more important, if the solution was that simple, and the whole financial crisis would have gone away by paying off folks' mortgages, that's what we would have done MONTHS ago. In the end, that would have been MUCH less expensive than the combined bailout expenditures so far.

However, that WOULDN'T have addressed the insolvency problems at America's -- AND THE WORLD'S!!! -- financial institutions. NOT AT ALL.

And the idea that dolts like Tucker get to offer these unqualified opinions to the masses totally unchecked -- all carrying with them a desire to mold the political landscape -- is just absurd. This kind of misinformation does nothing but impede the ability of intelligent folks to solve these problems while adding to the dumbing-down of the population.  ns

Noel, she seems to think

Noel, she seems to think that would have happened.

I admit that I don't know a lot about financial markets; so I don't go around proposing solutions.  But even I know that this is way more than mortgage defaults.

I agree with you that she and others expound these things as if they know what they're talking about; and no doubt others who are more ignorant than I (or have less common sense) take it as truth.

"This kind of

"This kind of misinformation does nothing but impede the ability of intelligent folks to solve these problems while adding to the dumbing-down of the population"

Logic and common sense

Logic and common sense are not part of this bigoted person's forte. I have been reading this person's tripe for more than 10 years and she never ceases to amaze me with the garbage she puts out.

She uses the race card more that Obama. The black person is never at fault. It is always white or society that's the problem in her estimation. She believes that blacks shouldn't have to put forth effort to get ahead, that everything handed to them on a silver(or gold) platter.

She is very derogatory against people of her own race who disagree with her. People can provide facts to her and she will call them liars. She is narcissistic just like Obama. Go figure. Guess she was abused as a child in much the same way as Obama.

She is another one of these people who think they know everything and really don't know much about anything.

Remember folks, it's hard to soar with eagles when you are surrounded by a flock of turkeys.

The video alone

and all at the "round table" scare the hell out of me.

I never watch these shows anymore and this simply reinforces my decision.

Oh MY GOD

This is also a little CYA being practiced by Cynthia Tucker.

As you all know, I live in the Atlanta area. As you can imagine, racial politcs worm their way into just about every issue that comes up around here, whether race has anything to do with it or not.

Back during the "redlining scandal," which was BIG news in these parts, Cynthia Tucker was one of the major players in the effort to shame mortgage lenders into expanding loans to unqualified buyers.

As I see it, she played a fairly prominent role in helping to bring the housing market to its current level of distress.

Someone once said of Cynthia Tucker that she gets up every morning and sees a racial issue forming in her bowl of AlphaBits.

I'm pretty sure you all know who that person was.  :-)

Thanks for the insight. The strength of the NB site is in the local information that participants share.

In my area, I've known about Dennis Kucinich for years, since he started as a councilman in Cleveland. I'm continually amazed that he gets voted back into office, but his constituents seem to like him.

Uh...let me

Uh...let me guess.....LOL

Tucker was absolutely right, Dave!

She was right to demand that those people who couldn't afford mortgages should have mortgages anyway.

And she's right to say the government should have just paid those mortgages that they couldnt.

After considering your description of her past, I'm guessing her next gig will be as a big player in claiming that the government didn'n't want to pay  those mortgages back at the beginning of this mess, when it would have been less costly, because they were mostly held by black families.

Ya think????

And why do they need to be bailed out?

Of course, these 28 million families would not need to be bailed out, had the govenment not pushed them into this mess in the first place. Additionally, we may not have had such a dangerous Real Estate bubble develop - supply and demand folks.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Good evening Cool

I never got foreclosed but having to work 2 jobs for years and 3 for about 6 months taught me my lesson.I had experience with that three letter word - jobs.

Bought an affordable house in 1978

When I got married, we looked at renting houses and apartments but most were too small or overpriced. My wife found a "handyman special" to buy, that was affordable. We lived within our means and did what we could to make improvements as we were able. After a number of years fixing and repairing it, we sold it for a small profit. I'm sure that this isn't what most people are looking for in, "affordable housing", but the approach worked without bankrupting us. Over the years when we would look at potential purchases, we were astonished at what we were told that we could afford. Anyone believing these loan officers, would have had trouble paying the note if they had any financial difficulties.

I guess it all depends on

I guess it all depends on what the definition of "affordable" is. ;-)

We had a local talk show host in the Twin Cities who, every time he would talk about the latest push for  "affordable housing" would always ask:  Affordable to whom??

I wonder that myself.  Is

I wonder that myself.  Is affordable defined by one income or two?  Is affordable defined by the tradional means of % of gross income and % of total debt?  It seems the sensible way to decide what is 'affordable' has been completely tossed out the window.

Government

No one here seems to understand that it is the government's responsibilty to pay your bills when you have made a mess of your personal finances. It is also the government's responsibility to pay for your abortion. It is also the government's responsibility to give you a good job in any institution, so long as you are a minority (affirmative action). It is the government's responsibility to help you jump the line, if you are a minority. Furthermore, it is the government's responsibilty to educate you, and to pay for it if you are a minority. It is also the government's responsibility to dictate curriculum in the schools, to dictate what words cannot be used in conversation, to dictate who you cannot dislike, and to establish the amount of your hard-earned money you must pay to the government in any given year of your life. It is the government's responsibilty to spend that money any way they see fit, without asking you, or considering your needs(unless you are a minority). It is the government's responsibilty to represent the government, not the people, in all things. It is the government's responsibilty to insult your intelligence and to push you down when you speak up.*

 * Civics 101, as taught in America's schools.

I am rooting for Barry Obama to fail as POTUS. For if he succeeds, America will surely fail. By his own admission, Barry is a "mutt". In so many ways, truer words were never spoken. And while he is in office, I will give him the same respect given the great President George W. Bush.

The only way out of the WORLDWIDE Economic Crisis

The Worldwide DEBT is the problem.

The best solution for the present economic crisis would be a REBOOT or restart of the entire debt system for the ENTIRE WORLD.

1. A data base listing ALL DEBT, government, business and personal needs to be created. The list would need to list the debt and debt holder with a bank that could make an accounting of the debt. Included would be all national debt of all nations, all mortgages car notes and credit cards for individuals. All outstanding bond and other debt for corporations, The idea is to list ALL DEBT of any kind owed.

2 . Every government on the planet would need to call a special session of it’s legislature.

Using the same authority that governments have to use or create FIAT CURRENCY the legislatures and Central Banks need to authorize the creation of ACCOUNT CREDIT in an amount equal to all the listed debts in the world.

3. The Various governments and Central Banking Systems then need to make an accounting change equal to the debt in the form of an ACCOUNT CREDIT or CREDIT zeroing out ALL THE DEBT in the entire world, and crediting all debt-holders in the world.

The following day the economy of the entire world would restart and the Stock Markets of the world would react to the new renewed capital in the banking systems, the Capital now available to restart all business and the disposable income to the individual people would restart and grow the retail sectors and the manufacturing sectors of the entire world.

Newsday

I agree that the level of ignorance of economics is bad and so is their history.

In reading the lead editorial for Newsday today: http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-vpoba095917888nov09,0,5022098.story

Newsday positions Obama as necessary to cometo the rescue of our economy much the same way FDR did. They slightly :) exaggerate the situation by saying: "With petrified financial markets, surging unemployment, a wildly ricocheting stock market, an auto industry in extremis and retailers predicting a bleak holiday season, Obama doesn't have the luxury of time."

Regarding the unemployment, at 6.5% they ignore how high Clinton's unemployment numbers were, or that we had double digit unemployment during the Carter stagflation.

The they close with a favorate myth of the Obama propagandists: "But in the grip of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression . . "   REALLY? Were we better off now or better off during Carter's Stagflation when unemployment, inflation, and interest rates were all double digit?

To equate this recession with The Great Depression is ignorant. The rate of unemployment then was over 20% and sustained at that level for years. The New Deal was a failure in government intervention.

It really would be great if these media people either got their facts straight and went back to the job of informing people - not indoctrinating them.

Gat

Right,Gat. And, unfortunately, the "stimulus" that got us out of the Depression was called WWII.

Newsbusters has not even touched on the economics

It is easy to deal with Cynthia Tucker, one just turns the sound down and just watches the babe.

As far as Bush 43 settling this by just bailing out illegal aliens buyin houses in America or others who had no business getting home loans, I would point out that is what Fannie, Freddie and FHA were about in bailing out poor people to get loans for a better future.

Newsbusters can grab a stool as I don't guy cuddle, but Cynthia can hop on my lap and hear a tale of fateful trip which started on a New York port aboard a terror plane crashing into the USA.

The mate Bush was a mighty sailing man the skipper brave and sure when elected to Greenspan tour, but in Clinton's recession which started in 1998 as I predicted from his retroactive taxes.
So Bush had his post 9 11 meeting and was seen pale faced after being told to print 1 trillion to flood the markets or there would be a world depression.

So Bush did it. In 2006, the Europeans with Buffett and Soros started crashing things by inflating oil and food through their hedge funds to soak up all that money.
Mahdi Obama was chosen by the cartel to stick in the final knife to America and that is why the cartel starting in the French attack crashed the housing and then the derivatives markets.

Are you catching this all Cynthia?

Bush 43 attempted 3 times to head this constriction off, but each time the European cartel used their trillions of dollars in reserves to smash Bush's efforts to tank John McCain.

I posted here and it is still a fact, economic terrorism was conducted against the United States in operatives like Buffett and Obama to his European cartel equal to 9 11 by bin Laden. The same short sellers after 9 11 that Bush could not go after are the same clique who installed Obama.

I probably will post on NB tomorrow in open forum where this is going as I  wrote it up on my blog as it is interesting, but in dealing with Cynthia and the rest of the economists who think this just all happened is idiocy. Paul Volker just like the Europeans he is in league with were talking about this constriction around 2006.

I informed the world that this could be cleaned up in 6 months and there was  Buffett blubbering on Charlie Rose 2 months later shocking Charlie in saying it could be cleaned up in 6 months.......then went to 2 years as that is what the financiers demand this to be drawn out as for European reasons.

I have not read of one honest fix from any economist, no warnings on what is coming next and everyone is twiddling their diddlies poking the dead horse saying, "Man that is a dead horse!"

I have posted how to fix this and will work with people I deem acceptable to implement things to fix this in measures, but they will not understand what I'm up to as it is not in their field. So one speaks to them in measures they  can comprehend.

If Mr. President has any American left in him, I would offer this advice. At the G 20 meeting, arrest Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi on electioneering in being part of an economic terror attack upon the United States.
Arrest Buffett and Soros, seize their assets and redistribute their stolen money from Americans to American households in five hundred thousand dollar Christmas rebates. (Make it 750 and keep that 250 for retirement, medical etc... into a government investment fund like Teddy Roosevelt would do.)
Next Mr. President, kick that English twit Brown in the testicles, grab that Japanese PM by the ear and tell them they are going to join you in an economic platform with northwestern Europeans where the US opens all the tapped wells from Texas to Alaska which has more reserves than the world combined.

Then Mr. President on the evidence of what Mr. Obama has been up to and what the Europeans have been up to, you tell Europe to refund the money or they will eat peacekeepers as the US military rolls from their bases and installs governments to our allied choice.

You then tell Hillary Clinton she can wrestle it off with that socialist John McCain for who Congress elects to be President and Vice President.

Bidden is a thug, but put his butt into Defense and put Gov. Palin into Sec. of State, and you inform, these trolls in Congress if they try to make political hay on this you will send them to Gitmo and they will not come back except with a Saddam Hussein rope on their neck.

America is in crisis unless someone fixes this the way it needs to be. I don't like Hillary but that bag can be a right proper SOB for America if she chooses to be. Don't like McCain, but he can pull triggers. Biden is the same SOB who will do what is right if he has to.
So it is America and I compromise, I get Gov. Palin who can't be fired who can run in 2012 after America kick the stuffing out of Europeans and the American criminals who created this terrorist attack.

Don't tell me that half a million bucks to American families ain't going to pacify them for upholding the law and paying off their bills.

Lincoln would have done this and did worse just like Teddy Roosevelt. They tagged you bad Georgie, throw down and go out with an American bang and fix this mess and stop being nice.

Not being informed at all is better than being subjected to the propoganda arm of the democrat party day in and day out. I will relish the day when these outfits go bellyup and these people will have to wash my car or cut my grass for a living, now thats what I call "Change".

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious. "

This is the same dummy

Who back when we invaded Afghanistan suggested we should drop cans of spam from cargo planes in an effort ameliorate the human suffering as a result of the war.

Yep, she didn't know that SPAM is short for spiced-ham and that ham is pork.

The Atlanta-Journal

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution has the 2nd biggest decline in readership (Dallas Morning News has the top spot) of the top 25 newspapers in the country. buh-bye cynthia!

My husband is sick of me

My husband is sick of me complaining every time Pulitzer Prize-winning (you may guffaw now) Cynthia Tucker has an article in our paper. He wants to know why I keep reading them. I just can't look away. It's almost like a game to see just how far in over her head she is, and how badly she gets whatever she's writing about wrong. And, oh does she get it wrong. She has zero common sense.

An example of her stupidity or just blindness towards the truth is when she wrote an article about voter IDs. She actually wrote that one of the reasons it's not a good idea is that not everyone drives. Guess she's never heard of a NON driver's ID.

For four solid years her articles have been 99.9% Bush-bashing bunk.

Before I moved to Atlanta...

...I was under the impression that the LA Times was the most clueless major daily in the land.  Boy, was I wrong.  Now, every time I'm confronted by those people pitching subscription when at street fairs or entering the supermarket, I ask them what they'd be paying me to read it, since I'd be forced to charge my professional rate for reviewing such a fundementally defective document.

Hoping

I live in Atlanta and have had to put up with the drizzle of Cynthia Tucker.  Many of us hope "The Annointed One" will ask Ms. Tucker to join His staff in Washington.
