Did you know that the Republican Party is totally white and is stuck in TV Land shows like "Leave it to Beaver," "Father Knows Best," and "Howdy Doody?"
So said film director Spike Lee Wednesday as he discussed the meaning of Tuesday's elections and the first black president with MSNBC's "Morning Joe" team.
Lee also said history will view things in terms of "BB" and "AB", meaning Before Barack and After Barack.
Does that mean next year is 1 instead of 2009?
While you ponder, here are some of the lowlights (video embedded right):
Let's think about the pictures that we saw of McCain-Palin rallies. Contrast that with the rallies of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The Republican party is stuck in a land of TV Land - "Leave It To Beaver," "Father Knows Best," "Howdy Doody." That America does not exist anymore. The Republican Party has got to do something because their base is totally white." [...]
The America that's come behind Barack, this mosaic, is the America of today - white, black, brown, yellow, various religions, gay, straight - That is the new America. And Giuliani and these other guys are stuck in the 1950s.
Hmmm. The Republican Party is all white? Really?
Well, let's look at the exit polls, shall we? McCain-Palin received:
- 31 percent of the Latino vote
- 35 percent of the Asian vote
- 31 percent of "Other"
Add it all up, Spike, and McCain-Palin received about 1/3 of the non-black minority vote. Do these people not count in your view?
And, even though a black man was running for president on the Democrat ticket, McCain-Palin received four percent of the African-American vote. Do these folks also not count, Spike?
Alas, one shouldn't expect facts to get in the way of Spike's views as the following will further demonstrate:
"Do The Right Thing" was really not essentially about America as a whole, but I really think it got the temperature of New York City at that time was polarized under the then-mayor Ed Koch.
Hmmm. So, how did New York City fare the following four years under David Dinkins? Remember the Crown Heights riot of August 1991? Or the boycott of the Korean-owned market in Flatbush?
Oddly, as Lee pointed fingers at Koch, there was no mention of the extraordinary failure of Dinkins as mayor, in particular as it pertained to solving New York City's racial problems. I wonder why.
Yet, potentially the best part of this segment was the following:
We cannot beget the 40 years of slavery. This is something that nobody wants to talk about. It's not taught in schools. All this came out of 40 years of slavery which built this country.
40 years of slavery? Nobody wants to talk about slavery? It's not taught in schools? Slavery built this country? Really?
Honestly, what the heck was Lee talking about, and why didn't one of the "Morning Joe" team ask him? Sadly, they didn't, but there was more:
You talk about historians, there's going to be BB and AB. BB is everything that happened before Barack. AB is everything that's going to happen in this country and the world after Barack. It's a defining moment. BB and AB.
Imagine that. Not only here in America, but all around the world, this election is more important on the calendar than the beginning of Judaism or the birth of Christ? Will Iran and Afghanistan stop using the Persian calendar, and Muslims throw away their Islamic calendars as well?
Is this what unity looks like?

Stuck
November 6, 2008 - 11:29 ET by cvgbuckeyeWell then, I guess its OK to tell the truth about Spike Lee. That he is stuck in Jive, street talk, Amos and Andyville, Soul Train Jive and race baiting whining.
As long as he remains there, everyone will silently harbor that opinion of him and he will eternally whine about it while wondering why.
He can kiss my Leave It to Beaver Backside.

So many things to say about this, so little internet bandwidth to say them.
As has been stated many times, the media was in the tank for Obama. Is it at all possible that images of McCain rallies were purposely broadcast to advance a specific agenda and images of Obama rallies were broadcast to advance another different agenda?

November 6, 2008 - 12:00 ET by HockeyKidNow, don't everybody get all overheated. Spike's the perfect mouthpiece for the Barry Administration--another example of someone whose work would have gotten nowhere had he not been black.
I have to say, though, that 40 years of slavery line was the best. Let's see, so America was built by slavery from 1825 to 1865, when slavery was outlawed. And this guy presumes to lecture America on history? Riiiiiight.
Now, to be fair, Spike slurs his speech a bit. Listening to the video, he might be saying "four hundred years", and "four hundred plus years". So let's do the math: slavery in America started in (or before) 1465--in other words, 27 years before Columbus landed. Riiiiiight.
One more break for Spike. Let's assume he was implying that black people were enslaved in America until Tuesday, when Hussein won the election. That would mean slavery in America started in (or before) 1608--in other words, 1 year after colonists landed at Jamestown, and 12 years before the Mayflower landed. Quite a stretch, even for the hyperbolic Mr. Lee.

Just maybe they will learn....
November 6, 2008 - 12:02 ET by AdelynAll I can say is just maybe the African Americans will finally learn that even though there is an African American as a democrat President he will still not help them get ahead. (He did nothing to help the African Americans in his Illinois District except line Rezko's pocket to build section 8 housing which is now condemned)
Maybe, just maybe the African Americans will learn that ONLY through hard work, NOT HANDOUTS, will they advance.
I think the republican party SHOULD capitalize off of this! The republican party SHOULD start educating African Americans and using the same campaign tactics Obama used. "What has Obama done for you?" and "You finally got your African American president and where has it gotten you?" and "Are you better off today with your African American president?" and "How many African American's are in Obama's cabinet?" (So far Obama's list is full of white Washington elitist)
Spike Lee is a Racist
November 6, 2008 - 12:02 ET by Gat New YorkAbout 15 years ago I had midcourt seats to a Knick game and took my son and his friend. Coincidentally I was sitting next to Spike Lee who apparently did not get hsi courtside seats.
Prior to the game the kids tried to introduce themselves and maybe get an autograph. Lee just shrugged and gave them both a bad look.
During halftime a few young black kids came over and Lee was very sociable and signed autographs for them.
When the half was over and the other kids left leaned over to Lee and told him that "we reap what we sow" and then told him who I worked for and will advise him about what Lee did. Lee then introduced himself to my kid but by then neither kid wanted his autograph.
The only racist in the room is Spike Lee.
Thanks for the compliment, Spike
November 6, 2008 - 12:03 ET by krendlerI'd take Spike's comparison as a compliment. What's wrong with Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best? November 6, 2008 - 12:08 ET by bmovies"how did New York City fare the following four years under David Dinkens? Remember the Crown Heights riot of August 1991? Or the boycott of the Korean-owned market in Flatbush?"
I remember that. Under Kochs last couple years in office, racial tensions were at an all time high. The white liberal voters thought that by electing a black man to the Mayor's office would ease those tensions. The exact opposite occured. Racial tensions got even worse under Dinkins as he gave the racial arsonists a free hand (Rev. Al Sharpton was used to going to the Mayor's office without an appointment, and got to see the Mayor anyhow) and handcuffed the police, forbidding them from stepping in and doing their jobs.
After only one term he voters replaced Dinkins with guilliani (sp?)
After Rudy's election, I think it was the very first day he was in office, Sharpton showed up at the Mayor's office, without an appointment, looking to see if Rudy would kowtow to him the way Dinkins did. The press stood outside, waiting to see if Sharpton got his unannounced meeting with the Mayor. But no, Sharpton was turned away without getting to see the Mayor.

Spike Lee is a pathetic bigot...
November 6, 2008 - 12:31 ET by PrairieSkyWhat race-baiting bigot this guy is...In many of his movies, whites are portrayed as ignorant, racist, morons.
And as far as the Republican party being all-white? Obviously he hasn't paid any attention to the number of minorities in the George W. Bush administration. President Bush has had more minorities (of all races) in his administration than any other president in American history...That is a fact. But of course, the blacks in Bush's administration are all "Uncle Toms'" because they supported and worked for Bush, so they don't count...That is except for Colin Powell, who because he came over from the "dark side" and supported Obama, is no longer considered an "Uncle Tom" black.
And Lee's statement that the America of "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" doesn't exist anymore, is right and wrong. The place in society that blacks were relegated to during that time peroid, thankfully has changed. I don't think any reasonable American agreed with the institutional racism and segregation that blacks suffered earlier in America's history. But, there were good aspects to both of the tv shows that Lee alludes to. A cohesive family unit, and having both parents in the picture to teach and guide their children about morals, principles and values were not and are not today, bad things. Any racial group can appreciate those things. All parents want to impart those things to their children. So, on that point Lee is dead wrong.
Unfortunately, all of this would be lost on Lee, because he only sees the world through racist lenses.

Bush hired minorities just because they were minorities, but who Obama hires(regardless of race) are being hired simply because he thinks they're the best qualified? What crap, and where's your proof? What a double standard you are pushing. Bush didn't hire his people because he thought they were best qualified but because of race, but Obama won't hire a bunch of whites because he wants to appeal to the white electorate?
FYI, maven, Bush has a history of hiring and appointing minorities...He had a number of them in his administrations as governor of Texas.

"Leave It To Beaver," "Father Knows Best," "Howdy Doody."
That's an interesting choice of sitcoms. One wonders why he didn't cite others like "The Honeymooners," "Gilligan's Island," "Friends," "Seinfeld," "Cheers," "Frasier," "90210," "MASH," "Munk," even "All In The Family," et al., ad nauseum. These shows had all-white casts, with the exception of the last one, which had two racially bigoted characters. In fact, most popular TV sitcoms from the past had all-white casts. His point? Let me guess: That the traditional family is both white and evil? I'd like to know his take on "The Cosby Show" or "Good Times." They were pretty much all-black casts. And I hate to break this to him, but today the traditional family is probably strongest in places like Africa and weakest in places like atrophying Europe.
"And, even though a black man was running for president on the Democrat ticket,"
But Noel, let us not forget that Obama is half-white too. Why does that simple fact seem to get lost in all the general hype surrounding this man? Is there a subtle counter-racism at play here, that white is something to be ashamed of, or that black simply dominates white?

Barack Obama's cabinet is ALL WHITE
November 6, 2008 - 12:47 ET by Lame CherryMr. Sheppard, when are Conservatives going to start making the point and standing up for black Americans in pointing out to Spike Lee and all these liberal idiots that BARACK OBAMA'S WHITE HOUSE IS ALL WHITE.
Obama has done nothing to advance black people, but shoved them to the side of the road. Obama has chosen nothing but white people. His campaign was majority white. The best jobs in the Obama administration are all going to white people or Clinton cronies putting in white Chicago politics.
Bush 43 and even Clinton had to pass the race test in appointing diversity. Why is it Obama isn't mandated by Affirmative Action to appoint 1/3rd of the cabinet with black people.
Why is WHITE LIBERAL PRESS not demanding that Obama appoint minorities? Is Charlie Gibson thinking one black in the house is enough so Letterman's cocktail crowd is demanding all white liberals to even things out?
Where is Patty what's her name from Hillary's campaign? WHY IS THIS HISPANIC NOT CHIEF OF STAFF FOR OBAMA? What is wrong with a Hispanic woman? Hispanics should have a 1/3rd seat in the Obama cabinet too.
Where are the handicapped like Tim Johnson of South Dakota. No Obama picks on some white Minnesotan like Colin Petersen to be Sec. of Agriculture.
Obama is whiter than any administration since Lyndon Johnson. So where is Whoopie, Spike Lee, Oprah, Danny Glover???? Do these black liberals only have time for blackness when they are the only black around and not wanting any other blacks to compete with them?
Why as I keep stating am I the only Conservative demanding that Barack Obama start appointing black people to the cabinet in key positions. Does Obama think that black peope are not adept enough to do the job?
I don't want any token Jocelyn Elders as Clinton tossed in. I demand for black people John Lewis into Defense, Jesse Jackson who has negotiated with terrorists as Sec. of State, Patty Doyle as Chief of Staff, Oprah as UN ambassador, Powell as ambassador to terror states Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas, Whoopie can serve as Michelle Obama's chief of staff. There are a host of qualified Democrats who are black who must be serving in this administration or it looks like half white Obama as in his campaign favors all white people.
Where are the blacks in this Obama White House????
Spike Lee like Barack Obama are showing they are racists against the heritage they claim. Why not put Spike Lee into the Obama cabinet.
Why is Barack Obama putting into place a shadow ceiling where black people are not allowed to break through the barrier?
Who is going to start asking these questions besides this lone conservative? Come on Mr. Sheppard, Mr. Limbaugh, Greta, Sean, Bill O'Reilly, get on the story that once again I have broken by God's Grace.
Where are the black people in Obama's White House who are entitled and qualified to serve the United States there. I don't want some token now that this is broken, I DEMAND 7 BLACK PEOPLE IN THE OBAMA CABINET AND no more of these white Blue Dogs or RHINO types metioned. I work as a paramedic in a large city and am accused regularly by blacks of being a racist. Why, because I ask questions as to why a patient has called for the same complaint numerous times, and continues doing so even though several different hospitals have found them to be just fine. "You're treating him like that because he is black. I am going to get an attorney." That was from the patient's mother. "No ma'am, I am asking him simple questions and want to know why he is abusing the 9-1-1 system.
Or, when walking to the apartment of one emergency. "If you were going to a white patient, you would be running." Nowhere on the dispatch sheet does the patient's race come up.
"If he was white, he would be on the gurney by now." What?
Spike here is my challenge to you. The "Messiah" has been elected president. I want you to look at the 2008 unemployment reports for both long-term, and new claims, and tell me what percentage of those filing are black. Then in a year I want you to do the same. Let us know if the percentages change. One other thing to do while waiting for the results. Read Charles Sykes, "A Nation of Victims"
Spike, if you ever want to come with me and see how it is in the real world, I would be happy to take you and show you. Of course, you would have to leave your high-class neighborhood to do it.

Most blacks I know have jobs. Of course, most blacks I know work at the same place I do.
It's as much my fault as theirs that I don't know more blacks, and that leads to stereotypes.
Whoa there
November 6, 2008 - 14:18 ET by BlondeThat is painting a picture with a huge brush, and is way off the mark (not to mention over the line).
There are politically naive people of all stripes (and colors), but to generalize a whole segment of the American population because of dumb statements by a Hollywood race-baiter is absurd.
over the line? who's line? yours?
November 6, 2008 - 14:26 ET by political mavenThe blacks who work for themselves, often are Republican. Thats my point.
Yeah, my line
November 6, 2008 - 15:17 ET by Blonde"Because most blacks prefer the plantation....of the democrats who use them...."
That's just racist and ignorant.
Granted, the promise of gasoline and paying mortgage payments probably appealed to the uneducated and naive, but to say "most blacks prefer the plantation" IS racist. Maybe most blacks are democrats because their parents were democrats. Maybe we ought to ask them before we ascribe reasons or presume.
So I don't see the "point" of your second post in the text of your first post. I just found it to be offensive.
Well B,
November 6, 2008 - 14:56 ET by HillbillyKingI'm angry with the Morning Joe crew, apparently they forgot to offer Spike a cup of this.
(see I remembered) ;-)
As for Spike's generalizations, he should concern himself with the segment of black society that is stuck in Menace II Society land.
Of course Spike is probably pissed that no one wants to watch his sh!tty movies anymore.
Where's Michael when we need him?
As for pm's remarks, the numbers show that the vast majority of blacks vote for the Dims. I happen to agree that by doing so they help continue a cycle of ideological enslavement that perpetuates many of the ills that afflict negro culture as a whole.
I am continually amazed at the insanity of such an act.
However, I believe there are far more negros who are self sufficient members of society than what is implied by pm's remarks. Yet, that doesn't change the fact that most still vote Dimocrat.
If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; But if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

November 6, 2008 - 15:03 ET by Cool ArrowHow very kind of you to use such an obviously endearing term.
You know it's not a preferred term, yet you use it, not in a quote from somebody else, but as your own.
I'm white, and I'm offended.
What?
November 6, 2008 - 14:57 ET by Dustin JolleyWhat? Republican Party, totally white? What are you talking about spike. Let's refresh his memory a little bit, shall we? Michael Steel, Fox News Contributor and Gopac chairman, African American, Republican, Angela McGlowan, Fox News contributor and Republican strategist, African American, Rev. Jesse Lee Petersen, Fox News contributor, African American, Republican. There's plenty more, but the point is that Spike Lee is very, very, very wrong about the Republican Party being "totally white."
Spike
November 6, 2008 - 15:17 ET by Long Island PeteDid Spike Lee campaign for Michael Steele? Did Spike Lee come out for Lynn Swan? Did Spike Lee support Clarence Thomas? I think Spike should try and engage his brain before he makes a fool of himself. Spike, you are more than welcome to join the Republican party. We just ask one thing of you. Please get rid of your racist views.

November 6, 2008 - 15:38 ET by msh1973I found this video yesterday while searching the net. Evidently there were a few Black people who didn't vote for Obama. The video is a little long, but worth it. I guess Spike didn't see this one.

November 6, 2008 - 16:30 ET by Richard RomanoAn historic election and all this guy can do is whine...what's all this talk about putting it behind us now that we've elected a black man? Honestly, this election will heighten racial issues, not diminish them. This interview with SL tells you all you need to know.
Spike Lee is a miserable goof -- the man is incessantly miserable...perhaps some psychological theraphy is in order.

Exactly right... this is the leftist agenda and has been for a long, long time.
More than despicable...but it has been easy to see for decades now via the television screens near you... the talking heads will make sure this continues over the next four years...big time.

So What?
November 6, 2008 - 17:53 ET by Uncle DonThe blacks have been on the Democratic Plantation for 100 years, they can have them, they're not going to change. We shouldn't even bother with them...we shouldn't even go after their votes or coddle them. They don't have enought sense to look at the platforms of those running...they didn't even know who Barack's VP was...no, I don' think this is a group we should be wasting too much time in trying to bring into our tent...

November 7, 2008 - 00:43 ET by GregEEverything he talks about is of race at some level. It's all he knows.
He has a point
November 7, 2008 - 04:28 ET by RR GOPLike it or not, that is the perception of the Republican Party. From what I've seen they have done little to reach out to minorities and unions. I can't see how the Democrats have really done much of anything for labor, especially in the South where union-busting legislation has been the norm, but since the Liberals took over the Democratic Party has advocated for racial and other minorities.
But, on the other hand I don't see how the GOP has ever actively sought to repress minorities. If you include gays in that group, it can be said that conservatives, for the most part, are not going to support gay marriage, but that cuts across party lines.
Remember that it was the Solid South Democrats who reigned over the worst period of our nation's history concerning Civil Rights. Cynically speaking, it is the race merchants and Libs who rely on the misery of low income minorities and out of work blue collars for their power base. There is no advantage to them politically other than to keep poor and angry.
Look at Spike Lee and the others. If people knew about the huge numbers of middle and upper class minorities out there the Spike Lees, Al Sharptons, Jesse Jacksons, would be nobodies. It is to their advantage to keep those of their race down, angry and to perpetuate the myth that minorities are oppressed and have no chance to be successful. Their message of 'can't' has done far more damage than the Klan ever did...and that includes violence and deaths. Because the poor minority communities have been walled off from the rest of society by the race baiters they have been denied fair economic and education opportunities. This translates into frustration, substance abuse, crime and violence.
