Californians by very wide margins defeated two green initiatives that anthropogenic global warming enthusiasts in the media and in legislative houses across the fruited plain should take heed...but will they?
To begin with, Proposition 7 would have required utilities to generate 40 percent of their power from renewable energy by 2020 and 50 percent by 2025.
Proposition 10 would have created $5 billion in general obligation bonds to help consumers and others purchase certain high fuel economy or alternative fuel vehicles, and to fund research into alternative fuel technology.
Much to the likely chagrin of Nobel Laureate Al Gore and his global warming sycophants in the media, these measures went down, and went down in flames:
Proposition 7 Renewable Energy Generation
Yes 3,294,158 35.1%
No 6,102,907 64.9%
Proposition 10 Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Yes 3,742,997 40.1%
No 5,581,303 59.9%
Will global warming-obsessed media share this news with the citizenry? Shouldn't this be HUGE news given President-elect Obama's green sympathies and his desire to enact a carbon cap and trade scheme to reduce carbon dioxide emissions?
We'll see.

Green Initiatives go down

Obama going GREEN
November 5, 2008 - 13:24 ET by LionKingI support Obama and his Green initiatives.
First, I agree, let's bankrupt the COAL industry. If Ohio and Pennsyvania don't care, neither do I.
Secondly, let's increase the tax on gasoline. Drive the price up that Californians will not be able to afford to drive anywhere.
All of you billionaires in New York, California, and Washington ... be prepared to be fleeced. Not only will you be taxed heavily, but your businesses and investments will suffer because of GREEN-ness.
PA does not care
November 5, 2008 - 15:33 ET by MichiganManThey voted John Murtha back in office. I suppose they do deserve what they get. If you want to see what America will look like under a Democratic Administration, just look to Michigan.

Quality of life is just better in Texas.

Do you agree with me if they demand a recount?
I remember well what the did with B1 Bob/Linda Sanchez...
I thought of you last night, almost turned on the PC but the mood I was in wouldn't of been advantageous...anyway, I remember our first real debate about The Chosen One and McC...I remember well one of the posts of me saying I had never seen anything like the crowds O was drawing and how fearful I was of him and the lemmings...I also remember saying by the time the election rolls around peoples anger at the msm may make me vote for Mcc...well it all came true...with the wonderful exception of Palin giving me another good reason.
Anyway...we had better start realizing we need real conservatives in...we have got to quit with these RINOs in my opinion...they get us nowhere, except defeat.

The whole country
November 5, 2008 - 14:37 ET by IamTinmanThe whole country (Well both coasts and Illinois anyway) has just elected a schizoid president who has stated that he believes marriage is just between a man and a women but supported exactly the opposite by appearing in California ads against prop 8 the defense of marriage initative.
The judiciary can't nullify laws that never passed, but Barack has the democrat house and senate both controlled by environmental whack jobs who will cheerfully bankrupt the country without a second thought of the harm it will cause.
See they have the wallets of everyone who makes an income to draw from and if the number of wallets gets smaller, well they will just take more out of each wallet. That's how socialism works until there are no more wallets. Then it's communism!
Doesn't matter anymore
November 5, 2008 - 13:38 ET by c5thenBHO and the democrats in Congress will pass these laws next spring or summer. Right before they pass the cap and trade system that will bankrupt the coal industry and cause the US to be short 20% on it's electricity needs. The results will be ironically funny. Only the "poor and middle class" will fall below the income threshold for getting the credits for the alternative fueled vehicles, but because of skyrocketing electricity bills and their related effect on prices, they won't be able to afford them. Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and the surounding states will be plunged into a regional depression because their economies will be devastated.

November 5, 2008 - 15:14 ET by IamTinmanI would cheerfully bet lunch at your favorite Burger King, that if you asked 100 average americans of either political party what Barack Obama's cap and trade policy is you would get maybe 9 or 10 answers and possibly 4 or 5 that made some sense. The other 90 would give you a guppy face and say "Huh"?
Believe this! Barack was mainly elected not on his policies because most americans don't understand them and the ones they do understand, he's already changed at least once. He was elected mostly based on his skin color, and on a deliberately (and skillfully) crafted combination of fear about the economy and hatred of George Bush, aided and abetted by the MSM.
This was on top of the usual democrat pandering to minorities and the poor and downtrodden. After so many years of this, they are still poor and downtrodden and yet they fall for this charade every election. Sad!
Thomas Jefferson said correctly: To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
mattm
November 5, 2008 - 15:53 ET by mvfreemanI don't recall the media giving much coverage to his energy plan.
I looked it up on his website. Concerning electricity it was very similar to this proposition. Obama wants to mandate a 10% renewable energy use by 2012 and a 25% use by 2025.
He also wants to reduce projected consumption by 15% through what he calls "...setting annual demand reduction targets that utilities would need to meet."
So basically they are gonna tell power companies how much they can generate. Because the only other way to reduce demand is to raise the price, and I don't see how he is going to sell that without some sort of subsidy for the middle and lower economic classes.
This would have been a handy piece of information to have prior to voting. The media made nothing of it and most of his supporters didnt care to know. Hell 30% voted for him just for "change".
Still wondering if O is actually gonna try this shit or was just making idle campaign promises.

November 5, 2008 - 14:09 ET by semolina_filcherProposition 8 in CA passed. Banning gay marriage as marriage is between a man and a woman. Something to cheer about. Government for the people?
November 5, 2008 - 15:25 ET by illumnaIf the congress and president override California's initiative, this will be further proof that the politicians do not represent the people. This is why politicians don't usually allow the general populous to vote on their own. The general populous would usually vote differently than the politician representing them.
With advanced voting technology we could do away with congress all together thus saving us millions of dollars per year from salary and benefits. Just allow people to vote on their own from their home over the internet. We won't need representatives anymore if we represent ourselves.

As a former "Native Californian"...
November 6, 2008 - 11:43 ET by JohnMcGrew...I was pleased to see both these propositions fail. I actually had friends still living there asking for my opinion on these propositions. There must be something in the water there; it's barely been 7 years since the term "rolling blackout" hit the lexicon, and people have already forgotten what happens when you screw with the marketplace with laws that mandate expensive initiatives on producers while restricting what they can charge end consumers.
As for "cap and trade" on a national level, it looks as though our only salvation may be a recession for the next 2 years. Congress would be daft to go for this, which would effectively chase out whatever jobs are left after the upcoming orgy of tax increases and regulation. Even the hard left understands that much.
As for if McCain had won, we wouldn't be all that much better. His pre-race energy policy was not all that different than Obamas. McCain was a "warmonger" too, which is another reason that this faux consrevative lost.
Going Green?
November 7, 2008 - 08:51 ET by KimberlyI happen to think the commercials from S.C. Johnson (Glade, Pledge, Windex) talking about how they're doing their part to reduce greenhouse gases are extraordinarily clever. The most recent is a real wake-up-and-take-notice spot:
These commercials are initially a "hey, consumer, interested in going green? We've been doing it for years--check out our products" spot. But then, I started to notice the imagery, especially in the last spot--standing in the midst of the windfarm, on the edge of the landfill, and under a palm tree in Indonesia--and immediately something more clicked in my head:
It really must burn Big Business-haters like our incoming President's circle of friends and advisors that some big businesses are already taking action to secure their own energy future.
