Exit Poll Media Shocker: Conservatives Still Outnumber Liberals

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

As the election postmortems continue, it seems a metaphysical certitude media representatives will cast Tuesday's results as indicative of a continued national shift to the left they believe began when the Democrats took over Congress in 2006.

However, the exit polls don't reflect such a shift at all.

In fact, there has been virtually no change to the percentage of folks claiming to be liberal or conservative in their political ideology since 2004.

Here are the relevant numbers (2004 here and 2008 here):

  • 21 percent claimed to be liberal in 2004 versus 22 percent in 2008
  • 34 percent claimed to be conservative in both 2004 and 2008

Interesting, wouldn't you agree? If the past two elections were indeed a reflection of a huge leftward shift in the national ethos, shouldn't there be a serious increase in the number of folks that view themselves as liberal, and a decrease in conservatives?

Another issue we're likely to hear from the media is that McCain lost because he shifted too far to the right in order to appeal to his base.

However, that's not what the exit polls show. Quite the contrary, McCain only got 78 percent of the conservative vote. And, he only received 89 percent of the Republican vote.

If McCain actually moved to the right to appeal to the base, shouldn't he have done better with that base? After all, Obama got 88 percent of those claiming to be liberal.

What might have happened if McCain actually had shifted right? Maybe he would have INDEED gotten more than 78 percent of conservatives?

Alas, I don't imagine that's what we'll hear from the liberal media echo chamber...do you?

If there were more

If there were more conservatives voting, then why the hell did we lose?  Why would they vote for the SOCIALIST?

Talk about eating your own...  (Cutting off your nose to spite your face?)

I think people realized

I think people realized this and that is why the news today is fairly quiet.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

maybe they didn't vote for O

I wonder how the third parties did, particularly the more conservative ones. If they did better than normal, that may show that some who would have voted for a conservative couldn't make themselves vote for McCain.

The exit polls also predicted John Kerry would win the election in 04. I believe in polls that are done over a period of time, but not exit polls.

No true Conservative who has been paying attention voted for Obama, except perhaps for the geniuses who believed voting for Obama as punishment would create the next Reagan. Those Conservatives are in for a rude awakening.....

Alas, I don't imagine that's what we'll hear from the liberal media echo chamber...do you?

Of course not, not for one second...from any of them....what I fear the most is the nit-wits behind the scenes running the GOP are not LISTENING, realizing they made a huge mistake running these so-called moderates and RINOs and always playing nice with the left, party wise or msm wise...McC is a perfect example, he couldn't go any more right than he did, it must of killed him to go as far as he did to just include off-shore drilling...and it goes without saying about illegal immigration and the silence from McC...this was and is a huge issue he could of garnered tons of votes from both sides of the aisle.

Please you so-called geniuses behind the scenes get a clue.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

The fact that McCain...

received only 89% of the Republican vote, and more importantly, only 78% of the conservative vote, says very clearly that McCain and the Republicans did not make their case to the voters.

Not finding what they were looking for from the Republicans, coupled with the tanking economy, the relentless negative attacks on the McCain campaign and the constant cheerleading for Obama from the MSM, those percentages of conservatives and Republicans went looking elsewhere, and, amazingly at least to my mind, they thought that they found what they were looking for in Obama.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan~ January 20, 1981

I think that more and more

I think that more and more liberals honestly believe themselves to be "centrists" or moderates.  With the media being completely in the tank for Obama, it'd be easy to get confused on the issue.

Might add two considerations

Might add two considerations to that picture?

1.) The percentage of folks moving slightly left may well have increased in recent years; however, they may have caught a bit of a glimpse of what moving left entails - Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Ayers, Wright, San Francisco agenda, etc. Enough to scare them back to center. Obama picked up votes by running (somewhat) to the center.

2.) If McCain had moved further back to the right (however that would contradict McCain), he might well have picked up more of the votes from the right; however, I'd bet that the impact on loosing votes from the middle of the pack (moderate R's and D's) would have played larger. Additionally, although it's difficult to imagine, I suspect the MSM would have given him a more difficult time.

Whether or not it would have contradicted his soul, I'd say that McCain's only chance to have won this time would have been to find a message that the center, and slightly left of center could have latched onto - it didn't have to be policy so much as it needed to be more populist. And, he should not have run so hard against Bush; rather he should have sought to correct the MSM's picture of the economic cycles.

This is why RINOs have been the downfall of the GOP since Ford.

good point

If Reps had a conservative who would unashamedly run as a conservative, they would win. It's when they try to play cute and win the favor of Dems that they lose.

matt,

While I agree that who we call RINOs have performed miserably in representing our views, it was going on way before Ford - heck, we could say that before Ronald Reagan (with the exception perhaps of Goldwater) "RINOs" were the Republican Party. Surely, Richard Nixon wouldn't be considered a conservative. Eisenhower wasn't a conservative. Heck, Ford was considered more conservative than most Republicans at the time. I remember Bob Dole was considered the most conservative running mate Ford could have chosen and that's saying something.

We got to this point of economic problems because of bipartisanship and compromise. McCain personified what most conservatives detest, being a quisling.  In two years you and many Democrats will bitterly regret the election of Barack Obama as the economy goes down the drain. He will not bring you prosperity, equality or hope.

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

Obama being elected President

I will do exactly what I did for President Bush, he is not the person I voted for, but I will give him a chance.

Pretty sad that all the people here that kept saying people should respect the office of the POTUS the past eight years are not even willing to give the newly elected on a chance.

He had my vote

shawn..do not generalize

I have always maintained respect for the office of POTUS. Part of my disdain for Clinton was because he disgraced the  position  of POTUS. At the same time, I have taught my children that he is always referred to as President Clinton.

As for Obama, I am not happy, but I am on board.
Item #1:  Bankrupt the COAL industry. OHIO and PENN do not care, then neither do I.

Item #2: Facilitate abortions. There is a reason Margaret Sanger supports Planned Parenthood. As an elitist, eugenics can no longer be practiced, but abortion works almost as equally well; it targets both the poor and the minorities.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

sorry shawn

The Great Uniter used his acceptance speech to bash Republicans. The MSM tells us that Reaganism is dead, Bush wants to bask in Obama's glow, and that, after eight terrible years, it's finally cool to call yourself an American.

In other words, now that the Republicans are out the window it's time to come together.

That's NOT reaching across the aisle. That's NOT bringing everyone together.

I meant what I told you last night. The left is in for a taste of their own medicine. I. have. had. it.

Sorry right back atcha Candance

I watched his acceptance speech live last night while you had your tv turned off. He was very gracious about his words for John McCain and he tried to reach out to Republicans

If you are implying that when he mentioned we have a very bad financial situation and two wars and big mess to clean up is slap to the republicans, I did not see it that way.

Like I said, I did not like the fact the George Bush was elected, but more people voted for him than the candidate that I picked, and I feel it is my duty to at least give that person a chance.

Whether you believe in God or not, it is still one nation under God is it not?

He had my vote

well shawn

I accepted Clinton without a second thought. I actually wanted to Gore to win initially in 2000 but I accepted Bush without a thought. But not now. The sentiment on the left is that the stupid Republicans are finally gone so it's time to party. Then we see Rahm Emmanuel tapped for Obama's cabinet. Governing from the center my left foot.

No one is reaching out to me. As much as Obama may pretend to reach out, he has slapped me in the face too many times to count, and Bush *never* treated the left that way.

I'm not demanding a recount. I'm not calling to impeach him. I don't think he stole the election. That in itself is more respect than Bush ever got from the left. But I won't let up the criticism just because he's potus.

Call it ODS if you want. I don't care. I fully admit it. As I told you last night, it's over for me.

I'm a typical white person.

Candance

Yes that was kind of racist remark from Obama and it was wrong, however I do not see how he can slap you in the face when he has not even been sworn in yet.

There is nothing wrong with criticism, I just do not believe it is right to condemn everything he does, without giving him at least a chance.

He had my vote

no you're right shawn

I will afford Obama the same chance Bush was given - from his inaguration to Sept 11.

I'm a typical white person.

 "There is nothing wrong

"There is nothing wrong with criticism, I just do not believe it is
right to condemn everything he does, without giving him at least a
chance."

Give him a chance? Sorry, I take him at his word. He believes in liberalism/socialism, and I have no reason to doubt he will govern as such. And when he does, it will fail. 2+2 doesn't become 5 simply because Obama says it does.

If he governs sensibly, THEN I will give him a chance. Until then, I take him at his word.

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.

Obama, by his policy

Obama, by his policy statements, has earned my despite.   If  he does not follow through on his campaign threats, then I might change my opinion.  Until obama proves to me he is not the assh**e he says he is, I will take him at his word.

Shawn

Every time Republicans work in a bi-partisan way they get laughed at by the Democrats. They get sucked into a box that allows the Democrats to chastize them no matter what their actual responsibility for the issue. This time Campaign Finance Reform has been used to fool Republicans into thinking that Democrats want to play fair. The only thing the Dems. want, is to fool Republicans into being honorable then going in for the kill. This was how Democrats won the latest Election. The Media has been a participant by promoting the propaganda lines and slander of current President Bush, when Democrats have been at least willing participants if not the true responsible parties.

Republicans have been fooled into thinking that they have to be conciliatory and move to the middle. The public then has trouble deciding on what there is to differentiate between the two parties. McCain ran an honorable Senatorial style campaign but he had nothing as far as deeply held conservative views to offer the Democrats. With no real choice between two honorable senators, people chose Obama for a number of reasons, mostly because he was a Democrat. What put Obama over the top was the opportunity for so many to participate and vote for an historic figure.

North Coaster

I would have to respectfully disagree. I thought Bill Clinton and a Republican congress worked extremely well with one another, Bill Clinton was willing to compromise with things like passing Roth IRAs, eliminating capital gains tax on selling your home if you live there long enough and ending welfare as we knew it.

George Bush has not worked very well with the Democratic congress, but i'm sure most here will say it is all the Democratic congress fault. I realize the congress has the lowest approval ratings in history, but there must be some reason they gained seats instead of losing them.

NC, I'm sorry but I have to be blunt here. The Republicans got whooped last night they lost by 7 million popular votes and around 100 electoral votes. They lost seats in the senate, double digits losses in the house and other postions of power as well

Yes we can all blame the media, but there is more in play here.

That is because of how unpopular this President is and the infighting and turmoil within the Republican party and all the finger pointing.

Last but not least, there is the financial crises. There is lots of blame to go around, but conservatives could not have been pleased that a Republican President decided to spend all this money to take control of the banks. That is one of the most socialist things anyone can do. He says that it is only temporary and the government will lay off after the crises is over. Do you think the new administration will want to let go of controll of these banks?

Do you remember the Mustang Ranch in Nevada got shut down for tax evasion and the government took over? They did a crappy job and it is now gone for good. If you can't trust the government to run a business of selling hookers and liquer, how can you trust them with banks?

He had my vote

Well Shawn, then you were

Well Shawn, then you were in the minority of Dems who thought that way.  The last 8 years of unrelenting back stabbing, lying and subtrifuge of the Dem Party undermining George W Bush will now come back to haunt Obama and the Dems.  You shall reap what you sow.

And please don't give us the party line that we should extend our trust, patience and support for the sake of the country to a man and political party who achieved power by divisive tactics.  Trust must be earned, integrity must be demonstrated, patience is based upon rational plans and support is garnered by prinicipals of leadership not by default or slick salesmanship.  If Obama and the Democrats don't get any of these, it is entirely THEIR fault, not ours.  I suggest you read up a little on what Eisenhower said about leadership.  Leadership is NOT Salesmanship.

Contrast this with late President Eisenhower’s views on leadership:

  1. Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because they want to do it. (cornerstone of elected leadership by the governed in a Republic)
  2. Pull the string and it will follow wherever you wish, push it and it will go nowhere at all.
  3. Our real problem, then, is not our strength today; it is rather the vital necessity of action today to ensure our strength tomorrow.
  4. You don’t lead by hitting people over the head-that’s assault, not leadership.

DOW down over 500, just love Obama

Ct...that is exactly what he will do, hand in hand with congress with Rahm Emanuel leading the way behind the scenes, like he has been doing behind the scenes along with his brother, money and the Hollywood leftists...the problem is the msm will somehow find a way to blame this on President Bush or the previous repub administration/congress...

Heck the market loves Obama so much the DOW went down over 500 today...at least oil went back down today erasing yesterdays gain just about.

Well, come January 20th, it'll be Obamessiah's problem to solve. Let's see how well he, Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the Katzenjammer Kids do once they're running the show and making the big decisions.

Hi Sky...

Like I said in my above post...no matter all the failures from this in-coming administration and congress....the left using the msm bull-horn will find a way to blame the right, unless the right learn how to fight back once and for all in unity and often.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Hi bt...Today at lunch my husband and I were talking...

about how much scrutiny Obamessiah will actually receive from the press once he's president. I am sure they will do everything they can to cover and obfuscate any missteps of his, no matter how big they may be. In Obamaland, all is perpetually well with blue skies and calm seas, the MSM will tell us. And like you said, if there is a problem they can't hide, it'll always somehow be the fault of the Republicans and the right.

What fun the next four years is shaping up to be...Just as they helped get Obama to the White House, the MSM is sure to do everything in their power to keep him there.

Intelligent people with money to invest are not stupid. They know full well what is coming, and that it isn't going to be good for this nation in any way economically.

"the difference." A nice thought, but...Just one problem-Dems and Repubs have very fundamental differences about their respective ideas and goals.

Republicans have no choice now but to work with the Dems...unfortunately, come Jan. 20th, they will be in charge.

It will be interesting to see what the Dems do with the power that have been given. It's easy to criticize when it's not your a$$ on the line. Let's see how Obama and Co. do when it's their turn to sit in the big chair and make the big decisions.

America and the world will be watching.

abp, I have news for you. Bad news.

Yesterday, nearly 56 million Americans voted against this freedom-hating Marxist fraud of a candidate. That is no paltry number.

Of that number, I am quite sure there is a sizable percentage of those same Americans who are not planning to just sit idly by and allow a government run by radical totalitarians to seize the assets they have spent years building, nor allow them to take away their freedoms and liberties.

I am also quite sure that many Americans are currently looking for ways to move their financial assets (and in many cases themselves) well out of the reach of the grubby fingers of the coming socialist regime.

Make no mistake, Barrack Hussein Obama is going to face resistance. As time goes on that resistance is only going to stiffen, as more and more real Americans come to realize what the false messiah is truly all about.

There is not one single proposal this man has made during his campaign that will in any way be good for this country. Not ONE.

As such, my personal hope is that this dictator wanna-be is not afforded the usual "honeymoon with congress" we always hear about when a new president takes office.

I hope there are enough members of congress remaining who actually  understand the lie-from-hell that socialism truly is, and who will be in his face from the moment his first proposal is submitted until his last.

I want to see this opposition keep up until enough Americans have come to their senses and realize that this phony must be voted out of  office in 2012 or, better yet, removed before his first term ends. The less time he spends as POTUS, the better off this nation will be down the road.

Its gonna be seriously big fun to watch this incompetent fraud of a president fall squarely on his face. :-)

Resist the Obamatons.

Well Noel, the most

Well Noel, the most interesting stats to me is WHEN most voters made their decision - 74% by SEPTEMBER.  60% before September and 14% in September.

What I find intriguing is 78% of the Jewish vote went for Obama, this is despite his thinly disguised anti-Israel position.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

dscott...I think that...

unfortunately, blacks and Jews keep falling into the same trap that they have for years and years. They keep voting, en masse, for the Dems. There is a groupthink among these two groups that the Dems, all evidence to the contrary, have their best interests at heart and are the better choice for them. I will never understand this way of thinking for either group, especially the Jews and especially with Obama. He has a history of not being a solid supporter of Israel...Rather he has leaned more toward supporting Israel's enemies. I don't get it.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan~ January 20, 1981

Rep adds too kind

This was McCain's problem; way to nice when you are in a war. "Not ready to lead," I heard over and over again. That directly implies in the English language that someday he may well be ready to lead as President. So here you have the REP adds almost ENDORSING Obama for President.

They should have ripped him a new one on Ayers, Chicago, bribe payment that is his home, Wright, NEW party. There is NO end of the RIPE material to use to inform the public of Obama. A REP could NEVER get in with that kind of incendiary material "laying around."

I sure hope Obama does a good job like he is claiming he will. There is indeed a lot of pressure that will help keep him a centrist if he wants to maintain control.

OR... We will see if our home phrase proves to be true once again: Never, Never Trust a Liberal!

Maximus

I think Republicans and especially President Bush have been too kind over the last 8 years to Democrats and news outlets who have trashed and slandered their good names. This has created the appearence of acceptance and responsibility for the the issues that they have been called names about. To have Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid Chuck Shumer or Barack Obama lay the most recent ills with the economy solely at the feet of the Republicans without a concerted organized response from Republican leadership is the number one cause for the loss of position in Washington and locally. When false claims are made they need to be buried in actual fact. There is an opportunity now with the next administration and Congress for this calling out and exposing of fact to occur. We can fully expect all of the current ills of the Country to be laid at the feet of Republican.

John Boehner is a perfect choice for a Republican mouthpeice to begin taking them to task.

HELLO!

Prop 8 (ban on gay/lesbian marriages) passed 52% to 48% in liberal California with a coalition that included social conservative hispanics, blacks, dems, and immigrants (from around the world) plus traditional white Republicans.

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD HAVE CARRIED THE DAY FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN 08!!!!

If this party wants to survive the biased media, a newly elected  leftist President and a Democrat flush Congress it better go back to basics.

This country is filled with conservative, hard working, family values people -- many of them immigrants from south of the border and countires other than Western Europe. Hispanics, Asains, and Eastern Europeans are the Irish, Italians, Germans, Polish, etc of the 21st century.
