'SNL' Skewers Olbermann As A Pompous Dishonest Buffoon

"Saturday Night Live" absolutely skewered MSNBC's Keith Olbermann last night accurately depicting the "Countdown" host as a pompous, dishonest buffoon who regularly takes things completely out of context, or just plain makes things up, in order to lambast Republicans.

Frankly, it was shocking to see an NBC program so aggressively attack a fellow employee, and to watch the excessively liberal actor Ben Affleck, playing the part of Olbermann, participate in the skit.

This must-see video is embedded below the fold with a rough transcript:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

KEITH OLBERMANN PLAYED BY BEN AFFLECK: Good evening. I'm Keith Olbermann. Our fifth story in the "Countdown," that he is the worst president in our nation's 220-year existence -- indeed, the worst president ever to head a government of any kind of the whole human history is beyond dispute. But even Mr. Bush's harshest critics had until this week credited him with a modicum of human decency -- a decency utterly belied by the tape you are presently to see, a tape at which a White House press conference, Mr. Bush abruptly launches into a stream of ugly racist invective that would embarrass even David Duke. We turn now to Michael Hilyard, board member of the New York/New Jersey branch of the NAACP. As always Michael, great thanks for your time.

MICHAEL HILYARD PLAYED BY KENAN THOMPSON: Happy to be here, Keith.

AFFLECK: Michael, given the vile nature of his racist tirade, should not Mr. Bush immediately resign?

THOMPSON: Well, Keith, I haven't really seen the tape. Is it really that bad?

AFFLECK: It is without question one of the most repellant displays of bigotry I have ever witnessed.

TAPE OF PRESIDENT BUSH: "...and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and find those folks who committed this act."

THOMPSON: I'm sorry. Is that the whole tape? I'll be honest, I'm not really seeing the racism there.

AFFLECK: "To find the folks."

THOMPSON: Folks?

AFFLECK: Well, he obviously meant African Americans.

[ Laughter]

THOMPSON: Really? Well, it didn't hit me that way.

AFFLECK: "We will find the folks."

THOMPSON: Yeah. Also in that clip he's talking about al Qaeda, whose members are entirely Middle Eastern and not black.

AFFLECK: So we have a president who is not only a racist, but also an imbecile.

THOMPSON: Well no, that's not what I meant.

AFFLECK: Michael Hilyard of the NAACP, it's always so great. Thanks for your time.

THOMPSON: No, no, that's not what I meant.

[Laughter]

AFFLECK: On our fourth story of the "Countdown" -- in his last and desperate moments, the McCain presidential campaign has decided to get its "Nazi" on. Asked at a Toledo rally yesterday to justify the invasion of Iraq, the Arizona senator said, "When a brutal dictator threatens his neighbors the responsible democratic government simply must act. Hitler is a good example." So let me get this straight, senator, Nazi Germany was a responsible democratic government and Hitler was not only good, but indeed in your words, "a good example"? We're joined now by our own Richard Wolffe, senior White House correspondent for "Newsweek" magazine. Good evening, Richard.

RICHARD WOLFFE PLAYED BY FRED ARMISON: Hi, Keith.

AFFLECK: Richard, as you know, throughout this campaign, I have frequently called for Senator McCain's arrest. But with this latest celebration of all things Nazi, has not McCain crossed the line, and for the good of the country, should he not straight away resign?

ARMISON: Keith, I too have been critical of Senator McCain. But to suggest that he has Nazi sympathies I think is rather outrageous.

AFFLECK: Courageous?

[Laughter]

I suppose. It's certainly not the first time I've been called that. That started in high school with my editorials for the school radio station, and my work as the equipment manager for the cross country team. Courageous? Sure. Guilty as charged.

ARMISON: No, no. Outrageous. Not courageous. Outrageous.

AFFLECK: Richard Wolffe, senior White House correspondent.

ARMISON: Keith, Keith, please don't cut me off.

AFFLECK: Thanks for your time.

ARMISON: I didn't mean it.

AFFLECK: Ahead on the "Countdown," my bid for a three-bedroom apartment on Manhattan's upper west side is rejected by the building's co-op board. Ostensibly because my cat is not allowed under its policy of banning pets. Tonight, my special comment. But first, on this date in 1903, Eric Blair was born under the pen name George Orwell. He wrote two of the 20th century's most consequential books -- "Animal Farm" and "1984," both of which I have read.

[Laughter]

The first when I was only 19. I have known his real name was Eric Blair since senior year at Cornell. As the leading visionary of his age, were he alive today, Orwell would no doubt admire me greatly. My eloquence, my passion, and perhaps most of all, my ferocious integrity.

And now "Countdown's" Worst Person in the World! To "Newsweek" senior correspondent Richard Wolffe once an actual journalist. Mr. Wolffe is now a full-time water carrier for the Nazi wing of the Republican Party! Hey, Richard, how much is Halliburton paying you? I hope it's not paying you in oil!

[ Laughter] Seriously, Richard, why not preserve what tiny scraps of dignity you still have left and resign? Richard Wolffe, McCain campaign butt boy today's "Worst Person in the World!"

And now as promised, a special comment. The letter was brief and to the point. "Dear Mr. Olbermann," it read. "The co-op board, having reviewed your request for an exception to its 'no pets' policy in order to accommodate your cat, Miss Precious Perfect, regretfully concludes that in consideration of the rights of the other co-op residents, such an exception is not possible at this time. Sincerely Richard Lieberstein, co-op president."

And there it was. All perfectly legal. Like the 1942 internment of more than 100,000 Japanese American citizens. Or the forced relocation of the Cherokee on the trail of tears. Or the monstrous injustice of our nation's Jim Crow laws. It was all perfectly legal, and every bit as wrong. If not indeed more so! Mr. Lieberstein, you speak of considerations of the rights of others. How dare you, sir? How dare you? Where, sir, in any of this were the rights of Miss Precious Perfect considered? Damn you Mr. Lieberstein, damn you to hell! No, Mr. Lieberstein -- your decision is not based on consideration but on fear. Fear of the carpets stained, of deliverymen clawed, of kitty litter, boxes tipped over, of hairballs coughed up! We have seen this fear before in Cambodia under Pol Pot. In Russia under Stalin. In Massachusetts under Mitt Romney. It is the fear, sir, and the tyranny up with which we dare no longer put. I pray thee, sir, let us have done with it. And what of the building's other residents? The Donnellys in 7a. The Gaspens in 4b. The gay guys in the garden apartment. Their silence is deafening. See they not that horror to which the Liebersteins have so willingly blinded themselves? This, sir, is a genocide! A feline genocide. And so the verdict is rendered, there is no appeal. Miss Precious Perfect, my mother and I, shall find another apartment. For me, the financial damage is negligible. For Miss Precious Perfect, the psychological damage, incalculable. Still, one imperative remains. Mr. Lieberstein, sir, if you yet retain any trace of honor, you must at once resign as president of this co-op, indeed, sir, justice and decency demands you so to do! Good night. Good luck.

Absolutely delicious. Bravo, NBC and Affleck. Bravo!

Absolutely priceless, but I don't recall Keith being that calm or rational.

Never as funny as it could be

I saw this earlier on You Tube and outside of spinning and dramatic camara angles during the "Special Comment" it wasn't all that hilarious.  A side-by-side with someone as Chris Matthews spittling like a yard sprinkler would have been funny.

What happened yesterday?

Yesterday, NB had a thread that discussed Obermann "crashing the SNL set". Now, we get this thread that says "Obermann was skewered". So, my question is: What happened yesterday when the set was crashed?

Did George Soros approve

Did George Soros approve this skit?

My take is that the SNL

My take is that the SNL folks believe Obama's election is a fait accompli and the rabid junkyard dog Olbermann is no longer essential to the plan.  It is now ok to make fun of Olbermann.

The pustulant demagoguery of Olbermann needed to be reigned in lest he turn on his own kind.  SNL merely provided a wake-up call to remind Olbermann to behave during the new Obama administration.

Or, maybe it was the method chosen by the powers that be at NBC to reign in Olbermann from his odious but useful fool ways.

In the "fair" world that Obama so adamantly posits, Olbermann would have been fired months ago.  But we all know the world is not fair and this race is all about power sequestration using an "ends justify the means" methodology.

Good job, SNL.  Olbermann is a target rich environment and has been for months.  Why didn't you do this sooner?

agree with you strat

Once more this smacks of too little too late. Sounds like Bathtub Boy overstepped his bounds somewhere and NBC decided to punish him. It's especially curious that Keith knew about Afleck depicting him when he went to crash the set.

Change is what you're left with when you've spent all your dollars.

agree with both of you

SNL could have easily mocked Obama and Biden in their September shows, but chose not to.

Mom_Rox: The election was

Mom_Rox:

The election was not yet considered clinched for Obama in September, hence the preponderence of pro-Obama and anti-McCain skits from SNL during that time.

What is interesting is that Sarah Palin's appearance on SNL seems to have warmed the hearts of at least two chowder heads - Alec Baldwin and Lorne Michaels.  Both men spoke positively of Palin following meeting her on SNL.  No small feat in itself considering the previous attitudes towards her.

If not for the initial mishandling of Palin by the McCain handlers (throwing her to Gibson and Couric first instead of the supportive AM Talk Radio folks in order for her to get her bearings) and the vile, contemptuous, naked aggression against her by the MSM... who knows what might have been.

Very funny. Starts slow,

Poor Miss Precious Perfect, and Keef's mom.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Kudos to SNL

I've got to hand it to SNL & Ben Affleck - it was a great sketch.  I am curious, though, as to why NBC would skewer this idiot at this particular point in time.  Could it be that this wingnut has fallen out-of-favor with the powers-that-be at NBC?  Regardless, it was fun to watch SNL desecrate somebody besides a conservative for a change.

Death Knell

Many people have been saying that Keith Olbermann has been cutting his own throat with his insane behavior. His end has been coming to pass over time, and this extreme put-down by Obermann's parent station must, I think, be viewed as a stake in his heart. He has lost all credibility and will at best remain on the margins, if his universe sized ego allows him to do so.

Good riddance, Keith. It was no fun watching you, as it is always pathetic to see someone destroy themselves.

Done Deal

Plus, the fact that everyone at NBC believes Obama will win on Tuesday means that Bathtub Boy is now expendable.  Who will he rant and rave against with the Democrats controlling the White House, the House, and the Senate?

northone

Exactly! The executives at GE and NBC made the decision to format MSNBC to cater specifically to the leftist, and Olbermann's ratings did improve as a result of this change (although MSNBC's overall ratings have been in the tank).

But if the Democrats accomplish the sweep you mentioned (and it appears likely), Olbermann and MSNBC will have lost their "hook"and may go the way of liberal talk radio.

A better option, one that would give many of us a great deal of pleasure, is for Rupert Murdoch to purchase MSNBC and turn it into a truly 'conservative' network to counterbalance all the other liberal networks. Forget the "Fair and Balanced" approach.

Rush Limbaugh, of course, would head the lineup of network stars. Rather than being fired, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and the rest of the liberal on-air personalities at MSNBC would be given a choice - tow the conservative line and espouse conservative principles on the air, including praising former President Bush and Vice President Cheney, or face discharge. Oh my gosh, would I love to see that!

Hilarious but..... The

Hilarious but.....

The truth of the matter is that the entire Liberal Left, including the MSM, Obama supporters, and the (apparently incoming) Obama led Congress and Senate has the same mind set.

Irrational. Intolerant of dissent. Seething with hatred at all things conservative and Christian.

It's getting more difficult for me to laugh anymore. I am watching the nation go down the toilet and Liberalism flourish like the virus it is.

I can only hope that this spawns some real modern day Nathan Hale's. God knows, we are going to need them.

Practice what you preach...

You can't accuse one side of the isle of being "Irrational. Intolerant of dissent. Seething with hatred..." and then say that those very same people are part of a "virus" that is killing the country when its been us with the power in Congress for what 14 of the last 16 years and the last 8 with the Presidency?

Come on, be better than that.

I like this site and all but to keep whining like its ONLY the media (yes they're in the tank for B. Obama) and THEM that has us as individuals and the country a mess is just ridiculous. The longer we take in taking responsibility for alot of the crap going on lately just makes it that much longer before we get good, strictly disciplined, forward thinking, economically conservative Republican's back in office. And if they're Christian let them keep that to themselves...some of us aren't and we don't need to hear about it in every conversation.

Great satire of Olbermann by the way. He's such a loon that it wouldn't have been difficult for Ben to underplay him...that Worst Person's part was great.

"Democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man." - Ronald Reagan

Sorry but you are notAllright

What a load of crud.  If you have a problem with Christians and people talking about their faith then you need to go be a Democrat (if you are not one already).

Come on -be better than that

The responsibility for this mess is squarely in the hands of the media who took screaming lunatics and turned them into normal people.  It became normal to spout the kind of crap that comes out of Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Al Franken, Bill Maher and many other hate mongers while Joe the Plumber is attacked for just asking a question.

No Republican gets any traction with their message in the media.  Republicans have been extremely restrained in not fighting with the same dirty immature tactics and it has failed them miserably.  It's unfortunate but true.

Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government.

Some of you will NEVER get it...

Go ahead, call me a troll all you want for actually being rational and seeing things from the middle where a true conservative always stands unlike you Dee who stands so far to the right that you can't see the actual party that you've left behind. You sound like such a fool for actually blaming all of this on the big scary media...grow up.

As I said earlier, until we take responsibility for alot of this mess we'll keep on losing and losing.

BTW, its apparent that you aren't aware of the history of the Republican Party because yes, indeed most of our best have been Christians, they kept their faith private and did not use it to gain votes or put it in a position where people thought they were simply exploiting it for political gain though.

To the moron keeping score, that's about 60 for me by way of using using logic and reason and the vast majority of the rest of you a whopping 0 for playing the blame game while we stand by and watch a once solid majority sink into the pit while Dems may get 60 in the Sen. to add to their House majority and will likely get the Presidency as well by quite a fair margin.

No, why would anyone see that as logical? I must be a troll. Sad that the party got taken over by zealots that see themselves as the perfect example while the country is in deep trouble because all they could do was moan about Olbermann and the MSM instead of organizing a ground game and hammering away on Obama's record on taxes and misstatements in favor of Bill Ayers and some other BS that the American people rejected and sunk us in even further.

Wake up people, or else you might sleep through it while a redistributionist, socialist gets elected because all of you were too busy whining on Newsbusters because a fellow Republican was critical of the party. Apparently all of our thinkers went out the door when you guys came in...and I got stuck in the middle of it.

Great.

"Democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man." - Ronald Reagan

Quit your whining notallright

you are obviously either a troll or an extremely immature naive person devoid of any sense of reality.

McCain, Republicans and most of us here have been going on and on about Obama's record and the media cover for him. Bush and McCain are both VERY moderate Republicans and they are portrayed as right wing zealots. You are a fool to believe the propaganda of them being right wing. You are also a fool to believe the propaganda that Bush and Palin are religious zealots. Neither Bush or Palin has done anything to infringe on anyone's religious freedom in their elected offices. You can't say the same about liberals. You want to fix the party by turning it into a more liberal one. You are a phony.

You are the one standing around doing nothing except criticizing those who are trying. Many of us here volunteer for the campaign and stick up for them here and in other venues. What the hell do you do?

Oh I forgot, you tell us how stupid we are - get lost - no one needs your lame advice. As the saying goes, "Put up or shut up".

Are you one of those phony Obamabot bloggers who pretends to be a conservative? You sure are acting like one. I could care less if you are real or fake - your comments are lame and have no grounding in reality.

RE: ImAllRight

Argh. Let's not abuse dissenters in our ranks, okay? Dude has an opinion, let him speak, and don't label him a troll. I see the left do that all day long, and I'm surprised to see it here. Can't say what he said sat well with me, but he's got some points, so what? We're the party that's better, remember? We're the ones who are on guard against the other guys who shout down dissenters, remember? Let people share their views. Even if a troll comes in. Just don't feed it. Make eye contact with the danged things and they never shut up!

And as far as Ben's portayal of Obamermann; I loved it. You could tell from the look on Ben's face that he was having a ball doing it. Cutting loose and just running with it. God that would be fun to be able to do that. Can't say that I care much for SaTURDay Night Live any more, but I enjoyed that Ben sketch 100%. I wonder, though, after the sketch, did he have to go take a shower?

Argh! Buzz off tickle

he's the one who started abusing people and this isn't the first time he's done it.  It's his favorite thing to do.  He's calling people "rediculous" and saying they "should be better than that" and I'm just giving it back to him.

I'll be happy to give it back to you too. By your ignorant rules - these trolls and rude people are allowed to attack us and we're just supposed to say "thank you sir may I have another"  Sorry buddy ain't going to happen.

Okay, you just exposed

Okay, you just exposed yourself. One of the prime characteristics of a person who stands on the far left is never taking responsibility for their actions. They they always shift the blame to the other guy. It's a favorite trick of con artists. Better know as the "Shell Game."

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

I wonder how much

I wonder how much influence Ben Affleck had in the making of this skit. It may have been his idea when he walked in the door. He may have wrote it all by himself and when Bathtub boy heard about it that is when he "crashed" the set. I think It may be a one time only skit, as no one else could play him other than Ben and I don't see him doing a walk on just to play Bathtub Boy like Tia does for Sarah.

McCain/Palin '08

No Bias Here

Does anyone here have any hard evidence that MSNBC is in control of the political content of Saturday Night Live? Olbermann gets good ratings for their network by appealing to liberals and it is a bit crazy to think this is some sign the network is going to axe him. Could it be that they skewered Olbermann because skewering pompous people is just funny and will always be funny?

Furthermore wouldn't the obvious conclusion here be that SNL is not politically biased and takes potshots at both sides? Murtha, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Biden, Clinton (both) and Obama have all been mocked this fall. They have poked fun at the media's interest in Obama.

McCain and Palin have appeared on the show and shown themselves to be good sports. Why can't the crowd at newsbusters relax as well?

SNL mocked Obama? I missed it

When did SNL mock Obama? (please provide a link - I'd love to see it.) I must have missed the replays of it on the weekday morning and Sunday morning news shows where Tina Fey should have been credited as a special guest. I've only watched a few of the Saturday shows and not their mid-week specials.

Yes, both sides have been satired, but the degree and timing have been different. Was either Obama or Biden mocked as much as Palin was? Were Obama or Biden mocked in September, or only recently when their poll numbers were higher?

The Axis of Taxes: Obama, Pelosi and Reid (source unknown)

...and don't forget the SNL

...and don't forget the SNL 'incest remark' against the Palin family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't hear them make any incest remarks about Obama.

Bias, but ...

I think they are biased, but have enough sense to know something funny when they see it, and to run with it. They take pot shots at both sides, but it appears as though they take more at the right than the left. Waaaay more at the right, come to think of it.

I watched SNL last

I watched SNL last night...I LMAO with the Olbie skit...

Seems sad they waited so long to do this, but nevertheless I sure enjoyed it...I also noticed early this morning that msnbc didn't show any repeat clips of this video...they did when SNL did Matthews skit if memory serves me right...but Olbie, why he is special....just ask him.

msnbc may have shown this since...but I doubt it...lol.

Hmmm...wonder why?

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Why though attack Olbermann now?

There is something much bigger being played out here as NBC would not be hammering one of it's own without a much deeper reason.

Olbermann along with Matthews have both been trounced for being Obama patsy boys. That is the reason in they lit the pyre for Hillary and are Obama's champions.

I still do not believe Obama will pull off stealing this election. I do though believe if he does that there are indications that Hillary and her backers like at SNL have set the stage to cleanse the house for Hillary of her detractors.
As I noted before, Obama is being outed. Lawrence Sinclair currently has a tape and transcript of Obama's Gram stating she was in the delivery room in Kenya. That means Obama is disqualified as President.

So Democrats steal the election. Obama is disqualified, perhaps Fitzgerald indicts him for a Thanksgiving turmoil.

THEE ELECTORAL COLLEGE is the measure to watch.

What IF I give you a scenario, that might work to keep the GOP from going postal and demanding new elections.

What IF, Dean, the DNC and Congress who runs the electoral college meets in December and casts their votes for..........wait for it.......

Hillary Clinton.........and she offers the post of Vice President to John McCain and he accepts for the good of the nation.
To appease Conservatives Gov. Palin is asked to be Sec. of State, Biden might be phased in as Sec. of Defense.

There is something in the works and this would be the most logical possibility to keep the nation from melting down.

Of course, the real solution is PUMA voters saving this nation with the GOP from all of this in electing McCain and then sorting it out in a real election in 2012.

Oh and final point, Obama has done this deliberately and it is not too much to ask as justice to exile Barack Obama in deporting him as he is about to unleash the worst disaster in US political history since Aaron Burr.

I think I just saw a pig fly by my window.  This is unreal.  I have new respect for the produces of SNL.

SNL's new (crossing fingers) look at things

.... I have to tell you, Noel, that I believe Baldwin and Lorne Michaels were absolutely struck by how nice Sarah was when she was on the show. I wonder if that made them think blind, ignorant hatred of the opposition is really not realistic. I truly think they thought she would be some dumb, backwards hick who couldn't think or speak well, and once they met her, they were taken aback.

This is exactly why I get so sick of people on BOTH sides of the aisle dismiss her as "dumb as sh**," when they haven't even met her. It appears to me that she is quite obviously intelligent and that surprises those who meet her.

Kind of like how they all think GW is a total idiot. People who spend time with him say the same thing they say about Sarah - NEVER underestimate either one of them.

Just because Affleck does impersonations

Doesn't mean that, all-of-a-sudden, someone at SNL can write.  The skit lacked any semblance of subtlety.  They could have done well, but I thought this was pretty STOOPID.

Did you hear Affleck do Baldwin?  I like Affleck in Dogma, but maybe he should just do impressions.

Hey, congrats, Josh!  You

Hey, congrats, Josh!  You managed to get the POINT of the skit: the Olbermann lacks any semblance of subtlety, and is "pretty STOOPID"!  Well done.  You're making progress.

Trying to figure it out...

Okay so I was watching Affleck do Olberman last night on SNL and I was trying to get a handle on it.

Affleck is a huge LIB and there he was raking Olberman over the coals last night in this skit.  Was he doing this out of admiration or disrespect for Olberman???  Whatever Affleck's intentions, this skit was hilarious.

Well, libs can make fun of

Well, libs can make fun of each other. I'm a democrat, and I really can't stand to listen to Olbermann. He's an arrogant putz.

Travis,

Well, Greg Gutfeld, the host of Red Eye, was on F&F this morning, and suggested there's some bad blood between Affleck and Olby. I tried to find out what it was, but had no success.

That said, something to bear in mind is that Olbermann is an embarrassment for most thinking Democrats. It's only the far left that finds him entertaining. Those with better than room temperature IQs understand what a moron this guy is, and how he's destroying journalism.

As such, even though he's a lib, maybe Affleck isn't as big a Kool Aid drinker as some. ns

Noel...

Hi NS - Thanks for the insight.

Travis

Has Snl done a similar

Has Snl done a similar impression of Hannity behaving as the rude host that he is?

Yes they have.

I remember seeing Chevy Chase doing a very good impression of Hanity back in the mid 70s.

Boffo!

Affleck's best performance...ah, ever. In fact, his only good one.

Skewered but........

I put this sort of "skewering" in the same light as Bill Clinton was skewered by the MSM while he was President.  Olbermann is the eccentric "lovable" skamp.  A little crazy at times, but hey, aren't we all?

Gee.....I'd love to grab Bill and go have a beer with K.O.
